FYI to anyone considering backpacking this trail - at 58:57 Doug mentions that they are passing backpackers who go for 2-4 hours a day over 3-6 days. This is a gross underestimation of the time it takes to backpack... 2 hours a day over 6 days is 12 hours - that's how long it took Kerry to run it alone. Even at 4 hours and 6 days, that's estimating 24 hours, even though it took them 21 hours running it without carrying big packs. I backpacked this trail with my wife in September 2020 and it took us 3 full days. Most people we encountered were taking 4 full days to hike it. Plan accordingly!! We returned to Mt. Hood after completing the trail for a day hike and had to give a rescue to a mother and daughter who only made it about 1/3 around at the end of their third day. Like Kerry said, there are not many escape routes - for the most part, you will be committed - and you do not want to find yourself in a bad situation!
Well done guys, thought I'd watch the start (I'm in Australia) and then watch the rest tonight..Didn't happen, just finished watching the entire lot..Super effort Doug, well done..Dax you are blitzing this Ultra thingy and I agree that Kerry has this endless energy that is so engaging..Well done on another sensational adventure 😊😊😊
Hi I so look fwd to all your blogs kerry . The snow cave looked such fun and magical . Keep posting more if possible. Also I love the way you vlogs are longer then most peoples. It's like a story unfolding really interesting. 😁😁
Hey Kim. Thanks for your comment. The cave was the MOST magical place I've been in a while. SO dynamic and cool. Will keep on with the long format videos for the foreseeable future.
Yay to former LA swing dancers on the trail! Awesome video with beautiful scenery & challenges. Loved the snow cave, stream crossings, Desitin & Glide (yes!), skeleton under stairs plan, altitude, those last few miles go on Forever. I do half marathons, day hikes and backpack. Hmmmm... an ultra?? Great accomplishment Doug.
Another great video, always positive & supportive. Keep it up, I love watching while treadmill running. It’s 45 degrees C here at the mo. I can’t handle that 🥵
Great video and adventure run guys. Doug, a little suggestion. You'll stop rolling your ankles if you switch to a thin soled shoe, that is zero drop, and has a sole at the heel that is simply the shape of the heel, sort of like just being a cup shape around your heel. The Merrell Trail Gloves, Zero Shoes, Vivo Barefoot, New Balance Minimus V1's, and my favorite, Vibram FiveFingers. The tall soled shoes with the wide, flared heels are like attempting to balance a thick book on a base ball, and when you get your foot into an off-camber type situation, the shoe pitches sharply, and takes your foot with it, before the brain can correct your balance. This is because your feet are so disconnected from the surface terrain, and are preventing your brain from "mapping" the surface. In a minimalist shoe, your brain is actively "mapping" and when the foot starts to move off-camber, the brain initiates a cat-like balance correction, in a nano-second. All you wind up doing is a little bobble, and that's it. Great job gutting out all those rolled ankle events! Beast mode!
Chafing pain is a real thing. Worse than muscle fatigue IMHO. Proper "lube" and "recovery" (e.g. Desitin if you get severe rawness). Kerry, always raising the bar for the rest of us poor heathens. Doug, what an amazing accomplishment for a "not yet ultrarunner!"
Cactus to skyline by March. I have to push myself to that limit of defeat, and then come out victorious. Pain threshold is high I believe. Will be calling it's bluff.
Well done Doug, super achievement.. Absolutely loved going on that journey with you guys, thank you so much for sharing 😊 Good luck with any future adventures mate😊😊
It was at his outer edge. But people are durable and tough if you give them a chance and support. You might be able to push - although I'd say further - slower instead.
Great video, any idea why your first attempt was 38 miles and this one was more? I am running this in one push in July and any tips would help! Thank you.
@@FullTiltWard Which way do you prefer? Figured I would go counter clock wise from the lodge so I can hit the bigger crossings earlier in the day with less flow (starting around 5 AM)
Love the video. I had a similar experience in July, a couple of us more experienced runners dragged a newbie trail runner along the timberline trail. We were there about a month before you guys. Which drone are you guys using for the drone shots?
I love your videos, they're very adventurous. Reminds me of the important things in life. Happiness, family, friends, goals and memories.
Priorities, right Sam?

So good to hear that from you John. Appreciate you watching and getting through the content.
As usual - a real pleasure to watch!
So happy to hear that. Cheers.
Awesome! Hiked this trail over 3 days last July. Planning on running it next summer, thanks for the motivation!
Well worth running. The light pack is the way to go. Move fast and rock and roll through.

Excellent, Jackie. Impressed that you digested it in one go. Appreciate your comments.
Well done to Doug. Champion mate 👊
Your videos truly inspire me to run great distance. Thank you !
That is great to hear. Run FAR!
As soon as I got the notification. Pretty pumped it's up early actually.

Always good to have dancing on the trail, my friend. It was quite an effort for Doug to notch onto the belt.

Oh wow! That temp would be a challenge for sure.
Great video! Looks like an awesome loop. I wish more of my friends were into doing really long distances...

Way to go Doug. That's gotta be the best way to experience your first ultra. Now Doug has to step up and enter at least a 50 miler 😁🥴🥴
He is contemplating the Bigfoot 70
@@FullTiltWard That's cool.
Very nice video. I liked the format of trail time mixed with interview time. PS. Sweet Kraftwerk shirt.
Gotta love Kraftwerk, right? Thanks Elvay.

Doug learned of the crucial SquirNutBut

That is the spirit, Alfredo. Work it.
Woot!
Premier time!

Do you think the distance was a bit too much for Doug? I'm just at 12miles at the mo..wondering if I could push it further, faster.
It was at his outer edge. But people are durable and tough if you give them a chance and support. You might be able to push - although I'd say further - slower instead.
Nice video.
Many many thanks

It is a good question. Looking at the maps of each run, they look similar. Different directions, but still????

I didn’t catch but what month is this?
It was September.

Which drone are you guys using for the drone shots?
That is awesome! So fun being a mentor to people dipping their toes into the Ultra world.
Kerry the Ultra apostle!!!!
LOL. You are too kind.
Portuguese soccer team scarves in the background? Como? Porquê?
There are quite a few mementos all over the gym at Doug's place. Probably the scarf is from a Portugal trip, I'd guess.
Video is awesome; the title's a little icky.
Thanks man. And possibly true. Always looking to make a catchy title - sometimes the line of good taste is assaulted. Apologies.
