I love this! It brings back memories of our ultrarunner group's (from San Diego) trip to Mt Whitney in 1989. It was so beautiful and so much fun. Permits were not needed then. It took me 11:30 and it was a tough run! Thank you for letting me relive the adventure!
One of the nicer videos I''ve watched for Whitney.. it's more like tagging along. I'm planning a trip out from Alabama when I retire in 2024.. I'm hoping I can catch it in good weather like you had here.. I've climbed a few 14ers in Colorado while living there for about 10 years.. I'm currently near sea level being only about 80 miles from the Gulf Coast. I acclimated fairly quickly last time I did a trip back to Colorado so I'm hoping I won't have any issues with the trip to the Sierras. Great video.. really enjoyed it.
3:53... Whitney is the peak on the right side of the frame. It looks lower because it is farther back. The rocky hills he is driving through are the Alabama Hills, a popular location for Hollywood films including countless old westerns, and many contemporary movies such as Tremors, Iron Man, Gladiator, and too many more to mention.
26:00... "the Notch" is the final crest beneath the summit on the Mountaineer's Route. On the upper Main Trail you are only looking between the spires that comprise the spiny ridge of the mountain.
7:50... the 97 switchbacks refers to only the number of switchbacks between Trail Camp at 12,000 ft. , and Trail Crest at 13,000+ ft. (starting at 22:12). There are countless other switchbacks before that.
Whoa, I myself got the very last permit of the year for Whitney. In Mid July, I'm flying from Colorado and doing it in one day as well, going for mountaineers route. Great video, I can't wait to experience this myself.
Great video Kerry, would love to check that area out in the future. Imagine doing the original Badwater Course and having to summit Mt Whitney. I know Matt has a great story of his Badwater experience in 2005.
wow! such an amazing hike/run thanks for another great adventure video!!!! i wanted to say that i pushed my limits a bit the other day by 8kms from 22kms to 30kms and did 2000 meters vert hiked up to mount webb near chilliwack lake i guess onto the next goal of a marathon walk
If you don't like messing with ice and snow, late September is the best time to try the Mountaineer's Rt. There are different opinions on this. Many people prefer to do it in snow because it is easier to climb snow than the bare rocks beneath. The slope above Iceberg Lake is loose scree, which is very difficult and tiresome to scramble over. I can attest to that, but I hate slippery snow and ice. The final technical climb above the Notch nearly always has some ice or snow. It was sufficiently clear when I did it. The spot I would be more cautious about snow and ice is the Ebersbacher Ledges at the start of the trail.
I would consider it for sure. But it is a grueling event for certain. Number of friends who have endured it in the past. Trail and dirt are my happy place, though. Baking asphalt? Not as much. But it is Badwater, after all.....
You didn’t look anything up before you went. You had no idea what mountain was Whitney, and no idea of any of the landmarks along the way. I’m guessing you feel you’re fit enough to get through anything, but someday you might regret that lack of preparation. With that said I enjoyed your video.

Woot! A Kerry Ward Full Tilt premiere … adventure awaits!
Want to hike there someday. Crazy that the highest and lowest point in the lower 48 are
right next to each other.
It is super cool, you are right. Old Badwater course.

This is AMAZING! How long did it take you?

Long live the hashtag....!
@@FullTiltWard indeed !
Great video, thumbs up!
Just one peace of constructive critisism is to have less of the selfie as you hike and more of the trail and scenery. Thanks.
Ever consider running Badwater Ultra Marathon?
I would consider it for sure. But it is a grueling event for certain. Number of friends who have endured it in the past. Trail and dirt are my happy place, though. Baking asphalt? Not as much. But it is Badwater, after all.....
there's no thumbs down on this...
