Learn how to paint hummingbirds with oil paints with wildlife artist Suzanne Barrett Justis. Watch step by step as I block in the birds and their favorite flowers, Bee Balm with oils. I will take the painting from start to finish with all the fun fine detail, and you get to go along for the colorful ride!!! We will also pay mind to the scale of the tiny birds and their flowers as we paint to keep everything in proportion. Wonderful tutorial. After watching many times I bravely added some hummingbirds to my painting of heliconias. Although I consider I am woeful at drawing I did an awesome job thanks to your demo and my hummingbirds are beautiful. Now I know I can paint birds so thankyou so much.
Oh wow. Thanks so much Warren and /or Kathy! I am so glad you found this tutorial helpful. I think Hummingbirds are such cute little pipsqueaks !! Such brazen little guys. I love them. I really should paint some more. If you are interested, I am teaching a workshop here in Kingsport, TN….it’s in May. I would love for you to join me!!
Hi Suzanne. Can you give us a run-down of the colours you used to paint the flowers and leaves please.
Thank you Amanda from France.
Hi Amanda !! I have one Almost ready to upload to Patreon on the hummingbird I did at the art gallery in North Carolina. So stay tuned.
As for the colors used in the flowers and leaves (bee balm) I used alizarin crimson, quinacridone red and magenta and some titanium white. The leaves have raw umber, sap green, kings blue, ultramarine blue. Cadmium green and titanium white. I hope that helps. Happy Painting!!
Thank you so much Suzanne... and I look forward to you uploading your hummingbird painting to patreon.
Wish I lived nearer so I could watch you do your wonderful paintings.
@@lovelyjubbly4151 I wish you lived closer too….you would love painting with my group!
Hello,
I love your work.
Could you give us a run down of the colours you used please and where including the background.
Thank you,
Amanda from France
Hi Amanda. The background was a green gray acrylic with the spray painted metallic pattern that I used a stencil to create. A run down on the birds is sap green. Olive green , titanium white ,...to create the iridescence I used a light orange and bright pink on the throat patch and used a maroon to make the individual feathers. I also used some turquoise The bee balm flowered had quinacridone red. Magenta. Alizarin crimson and permanent rose. I used and assortment of greens and blues in the foliage. I hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for watching
Thank you so much. Can't wait to try it. Is this on your patron page too please.
@@lovelyjubbly4151 unfortunetly no, this one is not on Patreon but I have many other bird videos on Patreon I know I will be painting more hummingbirds soon, so I will make sure it makes it on Patreon.
Ahh! OK I await with pleasure your next Hummingbird painting.
Can you tell me please, did you paint on your first base coat or spray the green on, and how many layers did you put on before putting your stencils on.
Thank you once again for your kindness in explaining things.
Amanda from France

Suzanne Barrett Justis - Artist Thanks 😊, you so nice and kind I will follow you 👍🏻
Hi Suzanne-I was not in on the canvas/stencil process. Can you please give me just the basic technique and materials please or did you post that already? Thank you!
Paul Semenoff hi Paul. What I did was....I used a gessoed linen canvas board and painted it a solid color of acrylic paint. I let it dry. I then had stenciled the back ground in with a metallic spray paint ...you can get the stencil at one of the large craft stores. I hope
That helps. Maybe I should do another video on just THAT process, eh? Thanks for watching Paul. I hope you subscribe !!
@@SuzanneBarrettJustisArtist I will give that a try, I think I could do that without watching a video...maybe:)...Thank you Suzanne and yes, I did subscribe!

Love this! Hi-What is the site/page where we can see “real time”, longer versions of your paintings? I wanted to know about the hummingbirds as you roughed them in, then added colors over colors. Was that a la prima or over several days?
Paul Semenoff hi Paul. I’m so glad you are enjoying this. I am trying to get my Patreon page up
And going ....seem to be having a time with it....but once I
Do....You can be off to the races on the real-time videos. Please try this link and see if it actually will take you to my Patreon page. I have one video loaded that’s really time and it’s my Siamese Cat video. See if you can actually get on the page. Thanks Paul for supporting me here on UA-cam.
