All I want from a dedicated cinema camera is 1-Huge Dynamic range( tired of crappy footage from mirrorless cams) 2- ND filters internal with no tint 3-RAW internal 4-Solid 10bit codecs too 5-XLR input IN camera 6-good 4k and framerates without nasty crop. The C70 is CLEARLY the winner for me. I loves that it can record on cheap Sd cards too. Dynamic range over sharpness everyday of the week.
*edit to add XLR 19:05 The pocket 6k Pro's 3.5mm & XLR mic jack can accept SMPTE compliant LTC timecode. From the manual "The microphone input also accepts SMPTE compliant LTC timecode from an external source on the left channel. Valid timecode will be detected automatically, and embedded in your video file as timecode metadata. We recommend sending LTC timecode via a line level output, especially if you are not recording timecode as an audio track." "The XLR input also accepts SMPTE compliant timecode from an external source. In the ‘audio’ menu, set the channel source to XLR line or XLR mic depending on the level of your timecode generator. The timecode will be embedded in your video file as timecode metadata. On Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, you can set one XLR channel to accept a timecode signal at the same time as using the other XLR channel for a different type of audio source." But otherwise really great comparison!
When you said you are no scientist thats when i hit the sub. Really nice to see someone that just wants to give his honest opinion and share his experience with people, instead of trying to be an authority on the subject.
Super helpful. It's the subtle things that ruin your day on a shoot. Knowing what those are and the camera that best protects you easily justifies a price difference. For our needs, the autofocus and face tracking makes a slider push feasible. Producing satisfying colour in any lighting environment without massive post helps us increase volume without sacrificing quality. Having a camera that doesn't need extensive external rigging - that simplifies setup time and load in complexity. Thanks for making your video relevant to the actual needs of shooters.
Was the auto focus test with the BMPCC 6K Pro done after the 7.3 auto focus update? I noticed that the update was almost the same day that you posted this video.
Great video man, so much work! Cudos! Some minor corrections: C70 can go up to 10 stops of ND. And I think it wins the audio category because: FX6 doesn't have 3.5mm jack anywhere so you can't use 2-channel wireless systems like Rode Wireless GO II and Hollyland Lark 150. The only way to get 4 channels is through expensive and cumbersome addition from Sony. This makes C70 far better choice if 4 channel audio is a priority. I'm still going with FX6 but audio is it's Achilles heel
Yeah but the FX6 also has that wireless lav system from Sony that allows you to record 2 separate tracks, from 2 mic packs, with 1 receiver / is able to be powered via the USB C port on the FX6 body - which as a doc filmmaker, IMO, wins over a 3.5mm jack that I wouldn’t use in the first place
Thanks for the review Dale. I own the Ursa G2 so am invested in the BM ecosystem and looking to purchase the 6K Pro. One other commenter mentioned the free Resolve software included as a plus. I’ll add that working with BRAW is fantastic and I think media might also be a category to add in the future and where BM shines.
Thanks David. All very good points. Though, Resolve Studio is only $300, so if someone is spending ~$7k on a camera, I don’t know if that price is a barrier or a sole reason to buy the 6K Pro. But I do understand the argument.
I simply meant it’s another plus for the 6K Pro in making your decision about which camera to buy. Not the deciding factor. If I weren’t already invested in BM, I would lean toward the C70.
This is the best cinema comparison video I have watched! I have a C70 and it is a dream camera. I had purchased a BMPCC 4k a year before getting my C70, and I agree Blackmagic provides an incredible camera for the price, yet it leaves much to be desired. The main advantages of the C70 for me are: autofocus, ergonomics, waveform, dynamic range, Clog 2 editing workflow, programmable buttons, ports are easy to access (vs Smallrig Blackmagic cage makes it fiddly), many useful buttons, works with aps-c and rf lenses while also providing full-frame functionality with 0.71 adapter. In live environments with live switching, the Blackmagic with remote camera control via ATEM makes the Blackmagic lineup provide an amazing experience for live concerts/performances. However, after filmed over 10 weddings with the C70, I can't picture myself using a pocket 4k/6k in a fast-paced constantly changing environment after getting used to the workflow of the C70. Anyone on the fence about getting a C70 for documentary, wedding, or corporate work, I'd say go for it, I don't think you will regret the investment. For weddings specifically, a C70 with 0.71 adapter with a Canon 24-105 f4 II on a Ronin RS 2 I've found to be the perfect setup.
dude, you are doing excellent work here. this really help me by a-lot. im in progress building a production house, and have some difficulty choosing cine-camera with my limited budget. thank you so much.
Totally agreed. Outstanding work. I have worked with all of them except the c70 and I can tell anyone looking for one of this cameras that this is a great comparison. 👍🏾
This is the perfect video comparison for people who want to use cinema cameras for UA-cam. All these cameras, when taking away what makes them cinema cameras, are just slightly better than an iPhone. I'm sure a lot of people on UA-cam will find this useful.
this is the most helpful review i've seen across all the camera's i was considering for black friday 2021. I'm going team sony this year and subscribing to your channel. i've probably watched 50+ hours this year trying to figure out the best cine cam with fewest compromises and this video was the clearest. thank you!
Thanks for the video but I think You didn't talk about very important things like codecs, workflow, how much you can push the image in color grading etc Also menu system insted of formating card speed, how often you format cards? It would be cool if you could upload samples from every camera so we can compare it because numbers are not the same as practical use.
Very informative video Blackmagic recently released a firmware update that allows the shooter calibrate the screen by themselves removing the blue tint
Bro THANK YOU SO MUCH I been watching videos for a month now and can not decide, your video is the best and the last I will watch to decide THANK YOU SO MUCH for breaking it down like this
My pleasure, Mahmoud! Also, don’t take my opinions too seriously. There are a lot of factors that go into choosing a camera. I hope that you find some common points between all the reviewers that will shed some light on which camera is right for you. Happy shooting!
This is probably the most comprehensive video on these cameras. Since you mentioned that one of the biggest issues with the C70 was the lack of a raw codec what do you think of the new firmware including raw?
Feels like you're a former Zcam user and now Sony :) C70 has 10 stops of NDs and that is the winner. Why? Because with primes all other cameras still need the external NDs, 7 stops in the FX6 (or 6 in most cameras) is not enough for anything wider than f2.8 in any daylight conditions.
So one comment. We can see that on the raw footage, the Pocket 6k had a lot more information that could be pulled. But the grade that was applied clipped the highlights (same for the other cameras). This tells me that the footage was not graded with the wide gamut settings which gives you the most dynamic range. I would encourage you to do another pass at the footage with wide gamut so you can get a better representation of dynamic range. Cheers Edit** now I see, just read that you applied a Rec709 lut on all cameras, which is the death of dynamic range. So I guess this test is to show which camera handles Rec709 the best. Makes sense. My small quibble is that it doesn't really represent the dynamic range of the cameras, but that's just my preference
Hi Lee, you are correct - at least for the footage I graded. Again, this is why I didn't assign points. I'm not a colourist. I can't tell what system Ryan used however - though I suspect he was using Davinci Colour Managed.
@@vistek your colorist knows what he's doing based on the nodes tree, but even he will be limited with what he can achieve with regards to dynamic range using a Rec709 lut. It just simply kills dynamic range, no way of getting around that. Wide gamut is the way to go. My only frustration is that just about everyone on youtube that does a dynamic range comparison also uses a crippling format of grading, usually Rec709. We would love to see someone do a dr comparison with the best color space available
yeah theres a way to set up resolve project to use color science "DaVinci YRGB color managed" and even on rec709 it looks fantastic. think this is a new one released in V17. but even my 10bit from the iPhone looks MUCH better than previous grades using filmic pro
Thanks Claudio! Yes, in fact almost all of these cameras have had vital updates since this video. I’ll have to leave the viewers to follow through with updating themselves on those.
I'm not finished the video yet; So far so good and very unbiased. I'm at the "Audio Interface" and I would like to point out that the Z-CAM F6 has phantom power through the mini XLR port/5-pin lemo. If you buy a 5-pin lemo to full-size XLR you can power microphones up to 48v!
Great video! The C70 has 10 stops of neutral density not 6 but it wouldn't have mattered anyway because the FX-6's electronic ND is amazing! I'm loving my C70. Thanks for putting this video together.
thanks for that great effort and amount of time for this test...maybe in a next one include also the files that each camera records and proccecing power needed to edit them(workflow time etc) thanks again
A few things have been updated on the BMPCC6Kpro via firmware. Notably the odd screen colour shift and the auto focus. I would be curious to know user's experience with these updates. If I had the cash I'd pick up the Sony. Love the images that produces. Sadly... my budget is more BM.
I believe it is a review without bias. I personally came almost to the same conclusions but I would have mentioned that the C70 can mount a speedbooster made from canon which allow to use fullframe af-EF lenses and that the c70 supports anamorphic lenses. With the fx6 we cannot shoot 4k with super 35 lenses. So to me is all about having more and better features on the fx6 or having a better choice for lenses. If the fx6 had a 6k sensor with 4k super35 crop mode and anamorphic support in camera (a smaller and cheaper fx9), I would have gone straight for it, but vintage super 35 lenses.... oh man
Amazing work and right on time. I was in the market debating if I should get a cinema camera. the fx6 is something I know I'm going to purchase (I have an a7siii) and wanted to see an actual in depth look with this camera to really justify my prosumer purchase.
Doing amatuer stuff, like interviews, vlogs, I really like the Zcam app. I tried a few, decided I didn't want to get too serious, and I feel the Zcam does so many things for me the way I like it, paired with Rokinon DS and the obligatory Sirui 35mm anamorphic. I actually worked for Arri in the early 90s, and IMAX a few years ago, but it didn't stick with me in a meaningful way since I am not interested in longform content.
I thought the C70 has up to 10 stops? You said it has 6 stops just like the Pocket6k Pro, but it should probably have a few more partial points since it goes to 10 which is a big deal!
HI Carlo - yes, I noted that in the corrections section below the table of contents. I agree that it deserves more points as a result. Probably would have tied, or nearly tied with the FX6 in this respect.
Thanks Staley! They're all so good, to be honest! The C70 really one me over tbh. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. At first I struggled with the Komodo, but over time I dialed it in. Still, the C70 is just so fast - an amazing doc camera for sure.
If you can have only one... and it must be RF mount... go with the C70. I’ve owned the C70, FX6 and my Komodo arrived last Saturday. The Canon and Sony stack up exactly as stated in this video. The Komodo is a much slower prospect. The FX6 is sturdier than the Canon. The Red is a brick. All produce good imagery. But for speed and hassle free shooting, between the Canon and the Red , the Canon comes out ahead... way ahead!
Very good content! Very informative. BTW... Few days ago firmware update for BMPCC 6K Pro came, that would make it score some few points here for screen quality and Timecode.
Great video. I think you hit on many key points. Would you really choose the Z-Cam over the Red? I was all ready to disagree with your conclusion... but then I watched the video... and, I think (with the exception of the Z-Cam placing ahead of the Red) you pretty much nailed it. I initially purchased the Canon C70, as I own a lot of RF and EF glass. That said, I also own a Sony A7S3, which was purchased after I experienced overheating problems with my former Canon R5. So naturally, I became interested in testing out the Sony FX6... Which I preordered at launch. After owning both cameras for about two months, I found more often than not, it was the Sony that I was reaching for; While the Canon sat collecting dust. Needless to say, I no longer own the Canon. Fast forward to only a couple of days ago, and notice the FedEx person delivering my brand new Red Komodo (remember I still have all that RF glass). So I’ve been playing with the Komodo for a couple of days. Trying to figure out what works for my shooting style, and what doesn’t. Fun Fact: the Red Komodo does not ship with a battery... so you should have added that to your “needed accessories “ section. To that point I purchased the Tilta V-Mount adapter and a FXLION Nano Two... which in all honesty was the wrong call. This combination added a lot of weight to the camera. So it goes without saying that I am now waiting for FedEx to deliver the BP-955 batteries that I ordered:-) To the point then... after playing with the Red, I’m hard pressed to see any advantage over the Sony. Perhaps it’s my lack of understanding, but in all honesty I think the FX6 is just such a good camera, that everyone else is left playing catch-up. I’m going to reserve final judgement until after a couple of weeks using the Red. I need to thoroughly test and use the camera, under varying conditions. Perhaps it’s one advantage is size. But only if you forego any accessories... because once you go down that road, she gets heavy really quickly. I’m thinking I might end up reaching the same conclusion as you. The full frame sensor of the Sony is something that has an immediate and noticeable impact on your footage. And don’t get me started on the low-light. It’s just so dam good. The only thing missing is 6k for cropping in and for anamorphic support... and a mic input on the body. Other than that it’s perfect. FYI: I plan to do a review and comparison of the Red and the Sony FX6 on my channel. Feel free to sub to be notified if you want to see my shooting experiences with both cameras.
Thanks Derek, i really appreciate the insight & the comment! I actually had no idea the camera doesn't come with a battery - because the model I was given already had a battery & a charger included. But looking at our own product listing, I see that you are indeed correct and I would have mentioned that had I known. The same is probably true of the Z CAM. That all said - regarding my points scoring ZCAM/RED: again, it all comes down to my personal preferences. I try to state that as much as possible. I'm definitely not going to take a hard position on any of these cameras. Someone could come along and likely make a very opposing argument. I just hope that my opinion plays a small role in helping people make an informed usage decision. Thanks again for your comment!
It depends if you are talking abour straight out of camera or how much you can do with the image. I personally would choose red or braw codecs because I like color grading and those are fantastic but if you don't know what you are doing then I would go sony or canon.
Normaly I dislike the Sony cameras except the broadcasts ones but here with the Sony Fx6 I would say that would be my choise for run and gun. Otherwice the Red Komodo. Great test.
One thing you forgot to mention is that the BMP6k can only use EF glass. This is kind of a disadvantage when compared with this other cameras. Excelent work on the video!
True, but at this point just about every lens can be adapted depending on what requirements the shooter has. So it's less of an issue than it used to be. For example the metabones smart adaptors work great converting E to EF. The only other thing you'd want on a BM camera is either PL or some vintage deal. In that case, it's a dumb adaptor any ways. So long as you get one that isn't poorly machined, the infinity focus should hold up and you'd get great results.
I don't know the 6k, pro maybe not be the BEST but certainly it's the budgest of the bunch so it's cool too see how it still gives a fight over the others!
I understand where the intention of your comment is here, but there are a host of reasons to shoot ProRes over BRAW. And to be clear, in MOST cases YOU ARE seeing a BRAW source image in this video. ProRes was only used when image quality wasn't a factor in the test, like rolling shutter or autofocus. There is an element to this line of questioning that I take umbrage with a little. I'm not saying that it's not without warrant, but let me explain my position with a quick anecdote: You see two SUVs driving down the road. They're both new, the even have a similar design & colour. Except one has a V8 and the other a 4 cylinder engine. They're also driving down the road at the posted 40 MPH speed limit. Can you spot the more powerful car? You'd have to have XRAY vision to do that. RAW vs ProRes is absolutely no different. It's all in the engine, and your delivery is the speed limit. I can give you a big or small engine, but the WHEN speed limit is still slow, so you'll never see the advantage of having the big engine. Big engines also drink a lot more gas and not everyone can afford $100 fill-ups. The core intent of a raw workflow is two fold: 1. Estimate your exposure and WB so that you can work faster on set and leave those precise exposure decisions to post. Paying your colourist and assistant editor for a few extra days vs a whole crew for a few extra hours is often cheaper depending on the scale of your production. 2. Give your VFX team 100% of the collected photons for accurate blending without any compression artefacts or detail loss. You might be surprised to know that most TV series are not shot in RAW (save for those shot with RED cameras). For example, The Expanse is shot in ProRes 4444. The DP, Jeremy Benning has said directly to me that the RAW workflow just complicates things, adds to cost, and there is no perceivable advantage over ProRes. I'm not down playing the value or raw. In fact, I shoot RAW photography 100% of the time because I can take more chances and worry less in post with nearly no extra cost to me in storage or pressure on my CPU. Additionally REDCODE Raw is the most efficient raw codec on the market - with files sizes smaller than ProRes. So for some cameras, it makes sense. I would never shoot ProRes on a RED unless I was weirdly forced to by the post house. BRAW and ZRAW are also great to work with, but there are always cost and workflow trade offs with raw, and many of those don't warrant the trouble when the footage is only travelling at 40mph.
If I included every single comparable camera it would be an unwatchable long video. I excluded many cameras as a service to the viewers. You can’t have it all, I’m afraid.
The best review across the board that I have seen! You covered pretty much everything, so I only have one question :) How usable is the fx6's scratch audio when handle is removed? Do you think it could handle noise of a live event without clipping? Keep up the good work!
The amount of time and effort you put in making this video is very commendable. It was as objective as possible. Thanks.
Ha! Thanks for noticing. I'm still exhausted haha. I really appreciate the comment!
I second that!

19:05 The pocket 6k Pro's 3.5mm & XLR mic jack can accept SMPTE compliant LTC timecode.
From the manual
"The microphone input also accepts SMPTE compliant
LTC timecode from an external source on the left channel. Valid timecode will be
detected automatically, and embedded in your video file as timecode metadata.
We recommend sending LTC timecode via a line level output, especially if you are not
recording timecode as an audio track."
"The XLR input also accepts SMPTE compliant timecode from an external source. In the
‘audio’ menu, set the channel source to XLR line or XLR mic depending on the level of
your timecode generator. The timecode will be embedded in your video file as
timecode metadata. On Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, you can set one XLR channel
to accept a timecode signal at the same time as using the other XLR channel for a
different type of audio source."
But otherwise really great comparison!

I used a xlr to 3,5 on the fs5 to connect my rode go without any issues.
I use the Rode Wireless GO II all the time with my FX6. Its easy to adapt 3.5 Jack to xlr. No problem at all and good quality.

FX6 Beast mode... I love it
So the E2M4 would be a good buy for a my first dedicated cinema camera
Wow what an incredibly useful video!!!
Thanks Brendan!
the color science of the fx6 is both beautiful and realistic. and not to mention the skin tones
Most people shoot with the 071 adapter, I would have loved to see that too. I also have a 6k pro but I usually grad for my C70 90% of the time.
And another set of variables with the c70 is with RF lenses, Ef lenses, .71 adapter, non focal adapter.
I use the auto ISO on the C70 for run and gun, it performs a lot like the variable ND on the Sony and transitions softly through exposure changes.
I have the regular 6k and just put a deposit on a c70 today. Nice to see that all the reasons I am doing this are universally agreed upon
Thanks for your time on this! Super insightful
Thanks so much Mitch! I'm thrilled the effort was worth it!

Absolutely excellent work! Thank you! An important update needs to be done on this video: Canon C70 now records in RAW.
Thanks Claudio! Yes, in fact almost all of these cameras have had vital updates since this video. I’ll have to leave the viewers to follow through with updating themselves on those.
It will be the C70 for me; perfect for any situation
So detailed review of each camera.
Thank you Kai! 🙏
14:00 fx3 ?
Terrific overview. Thanks.
Thank you Torv!
No S1H?
Thanks!
Thanks Matthew!
I can use the fx6 with handheld on my crane 3s 👍🏻🎥 thanks for this very good and long review 👏 best cinematic greetings from germany
Thank you for noting that & for the comment!
Great video. Question... is that song "Gemini" playing in the background @ 00:45? If so, that song is so dope!!! One of my favs!!!!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ dunno. I got it from my artlist.io subscription. Glad you like my choice of music though!
amazing info, saved me from splurging on a Red for no reason
Without words. Simply Thanks.
great video!!! this is the third time I've watched it!
Thank you Guillermo!
The bmcc also has timecode, uses the xlr input or the jack for mic
Great video! The C70 has 10 stops of neutral density not 6 but it wouldn't have mattered anyway because the FX-6's electronic ND is amazing! I'm loving my C70. Thanks for putting this video together.
Yes, that was an oversight, and I added that to corrections in the description below. Thanks for the comment!
thanks for that great effort and amount of time for this test...maybe in a next one include also the files that each camera records and proccecing power needed to edit them(workflow time etc) thanks again
Sees effort in this video👀 = instant sub 😍
Thank you!!
How about ursa mini 12k?
Great work here!
Thanks Josh!
Wow, the exact video I needed.
You are a god.
Thank you Young Bird!!
Yeah, really a great review and I appreciated it. Helped me make my decision between C70 and Fx6. Appreciate it all! Subscribed too
Thanks Nathan!
(Blackmagic 6k shooter) Great honest and fair review.
A few things have been updated on the BMPCC6Kpro via firmware. Notably the odd screen colour shift and the auto focus. I would be curious to know user's experience with these updates. If I had the cash I'd pick up the Sony. Love the images that produces. Sadly... my budget is more BM.
so was it at fx6 or fx3??? some of the clip had fx3?
Not sure where you got the 12.5 stops of dynamic range for the komodo...but I've got at least 14 stops of working dynamic range on my Komodo.
Look in the description below the video. You will find a link to lab based DR tests.
If the fx6 had a 6k sensor with 4k super35 crop mode and anamorphic support in camera (a smaller and cheaper fx9), I would have gone straight for it, but vintage super 35 lenses.... oh man
Well done, Dale!
Thanks Martin!
Extraordinary review!. It was amazingly helpful! Thank you!
Thank you so much!! Happy to hear that it was helpful.
Great comparison. Thank you for putting this together.
Thanks Oren!!
Amazing work and right on time. I was in the market debating if I should get a cinema camera. the fx6 is something I know I'm going to purchase (I have an a7siii) and wanted to see an actual in depth look with this camera to really justify my prosumer purchase.
Thank you very much for the comment! Best of luck with the FX6!
This review is just phenomenal. Thank you for your efforts and work.
Thank you so much AG! Really appreciate the comment.
One of the best all-encompassing, exhaustive reviews I've seen. Great breakdown.
Thanks LM! Really appreciate the nice comment.
@@vistek legit. subbed.
auto focus section FX3?
Outstanding job amigo! You got skills. My heart wants a Komodo. My head tells me C70. FML.
Thanks Staley! They're all so good, to be honest! The C70 really one me over tbh. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. At first I struggled with the Komodo, but over time I dialed it in. Still, the C70 is just so fast - an amazing doc camera for sure.
The c70 is so fragile though, especially the flip screen, you have baby it so much on set which is such a hustle
Thanks Pavel. Yep - I’ve already noted that in the corrections section. They snuck that firmware upgrade in just as I was posting the video.
So it goes without saying that I am now waiting for FedEx to deliver the BP-955 batteries that I ordered:-)
To the point then... after playing with the Red, I’m hard pressed to see any advantage over the Sony.
For image quality alone, which is the best?
It depends if you are talking abour straight out of camera or how much you can do with the image. I personally would choose red or braw codecs because I like color grading and those are fantastic but if you don't know what you are doing then I would go sony or canon.
Great comparison!
I'm probably going with the C70
Normaly I dislike the Sony cameras except the broadcasts ones but here with the Sony Fx6 I would say that would be my choise for run and gun. Otherwice the Red Komodo. Great test.
Thank you for scratching my itch.
Our pleasure!
Solid review, thanks, this confirms my choices.
Thanks Devtank!
I don't know the 6k, pro maybe not be the BEST but certainly it's the budgest of the bunch so it's cool too see how it still gives a fight over the others!
what about IS ?
I feel like the Ursa Mini 12k is closer in price range with the rest.
Why would you test the Blackmagic camera with pro res? The Blackmagic camera works best shooting Raw.
I'm not saying that it's not without warrant, but let me explain my position with a quick anecdote:
You see two SUVs driving down the road.
The core intent of a raw workflow is two fold:
Thanks for the effort ✌❤
where is the R5 :) thanks!
Where is the Panasonic S1 in this list
If I included every single comparable camera it would be an unwatchable long video. I excluded many cameras as a service to the viewers. You can’t have it all, I’m afraid.
@@vistek valid point stay blessed and spirited
Love your energy!
Thanks YVR!
Best review
Thank you!
The best review across the board that I have seen! You covered pretty much everything, so I only have one question :) How usable is the fx6's scratch audio when handle is removed? Do you think it could handle noise of a live event without clipping? Keep up the good work!
That C70 image just looks SO good, and punches WAY above it's weight class. That DGO sensor is amazing.
A ton of great work - thanks!
Thanks you SilverSulu!!
Thank you! That was really helpful.
Super happy with my fx6 :)
Well done and can I be the first (I just checked all the comments) to say thank you to Gloria!
