This is actually great advice! I got my first fly rod for Christmas, but I have no idea what what lures/flies to use and there to fish. I live on a large pond/small lake in the northeast(I fish for mostly bass, pickeral, and crappie). How do you know where baitfish and food are?

I don't often stillwater fish. But when I do, I choose chironomids.

Chironomids are 90% of what I use from ice off to ice on. Love catching 8-10lb trout on size 18 hooks!

orange blobs are good on a di 3. most folk ignore the margins I've had the biggest fish from inches from the bank. the water is peaty so trout can hide in the margins. Blue trout fight better than rainbows.
cast a daddy Long legs and let it drift acrossthe surface. . somedays this is the only take you'll get.
otherwise long cast lure type flies cats whisker in white or black and strip them fast therefore inducing takes.
    Buzzers never worked for me.
Any fly that gives confidence usually pays off. The more time spent on a particular river or stillwater the better.
check the day catches in the log book and see what's working. Alot of fisherman will tell tales on which technique or fly used.
