We're Doing Elections Wrong | Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj | Netflix

- Опубліковано 21 чер 2020
- How did the 2020 presidential election in America come down to Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden? Hasan illustrates why our partisan, two-party system is the result of winner-take-all elections and why ranked choice voting is a much more democratic alternative. He also talks to U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) about the ideological divide in the Democratic party between moderates and progressives.

"Everything is about who we hate, not who we like." That sums American democracy.
Same in france
Seems like most democratic countries are shifting towards that kind of perspective.
It's insane if you sum it up like this. But so very true.
Exact opposite of how we should be weighing candidates. Its not about being saved from hell, its about reaching for the heavens.

when comedians figure out a way to save your democracy, it says a lot about your government
They didn't figure it out, the solutions have been know for quite some time. Problem is, there is huge incentive for the current government to keep the current system that keeps getting them reelected. And you won't change the system by voting, but by organizing movements.
Ya America is fucked up
When you seek guidance in comedians for your government, it's really just saying a lot about you.

THAT SLUUUUUUUUT!!!
@ASMR Nation I think people spamming conspiracy videos are the greatest threat after the big orange idiot, actually. Begone.
American democracy: Winner takes all
American sports: Winner takes all
American capitalism: Winner takes all
And yet we expect people to believe in an American Dream where they have a chance? America is all about a handful of winners surrounded by a sea of people they took everything from.
It's the same bia as the lottery. People have no real way to process odds so they just think: "But that winner could be me!"
In a system like that it's hard to expect anyone to look out for their neighbors
That really hurt but true. What a dystopian reality.
"Handful of winners". The bigger your risk, the bigger your winnings or loses.
No one is stopping you from creating a business that serves the public.
But to suggest that these handful of winners are surrounded by people they 'took everything from', almost sounds like you're implying that these people had their business stolen from them?
When you get a job, you trade your time and effort for a salary. That money is the medium to allow you to trade for whatever you're working to pay for. And that salary is negotiated and contracted to you on a mutual agreement basis. But it's always about the non-winners being stolen from right?
You wonder why after so many centuries, we still do not have a company run by these 'non-winners' who cried everyday? By now, with all that wasted time crying, they coulda made a multinational corporation, and hired all these 'victims' of the winners, and made a successful business. Oh wait, I wonder why that never happened......
Yes, Gramsci nails this in his analysis of cultural hegemony.
*Can we talk about Politicians retiring at retirement age? This is also needed heh.*
Retirement of politicians (age regardless) is the voters responsibility.
ooooh I detect some age-ism there, Adrian. Retirement age happens when one can no longer do what one has been doing and does not do anything else. Respect needed. The thing about older workers is they often are a resource for the big picture view and are incredibly valuable for some recent historical perspective. It depends on the work, of course, but it serves no one to dismiss some older workers, and yes political office holders (not all are "politicians", and many or most truly believe in public service) as being irrelevant. I'm older now but when I was young, even very young, I learned SO much from older folks who really understood issues. I vowed I would never be age-ist. My mom was dumped from her job when she hit 50 while she was very much a vibrant and wise asset running the day to day details of her company (advertising firm). The new boss she trained when her previous boss retired gratefully accepted my mom's help and training to take over the boss' job. It took 2 years, and then he fired her so he could hire a 20 year old bimbo who was unable to do anything correctly (other than maybe screw the boss). Two more years, and the company failed. Please pay attention to your biases before you spew them. Thanks.
@Kayleigh Reimert But someone who is 70 can be much sharper than many others much younger, and may live to 100. Not knowing your background, it's impossible why you'd say that. Maybe your family is a health disaster and no one makes it to be old. Hey, 70 is the new 50. Each person must be taken on their own merits or mistakes. And btw, I know a 39 year old who is far less tech and computer savvy than several 70+ years old folks I know. These generalizations, like you and others here are spouting, do nothing for no one, and can be harmful as well.
But then we wouldn't have Bernie still :(

That's because they think they have lost their "rights" and it's like the end of the world for them because they sincerely believe that their rights are more important than collective safety
Americans are raised being told american idealism equals freedom. If anyone messes with even a fraction of what's in place conservatives start crying about the American way being uprooted
In no way do I agree with them. I'm a progressive to a point.
@@sea_triscuit7980 It's wrong by their own definition too. Their own "rights to move around freely" endangers everyone's "right to safety". Since they < everyone, it is wrong. It's basic mathematics at this point.
If you're an American, I hereby give you a pat on your back for understanding this. **gives you a pat on your back**
@@ShubhThakkar I think rather than saying America represents "freedom" we/they should say America represents the rule of laws made by democratically elected representatives with certain restrictions on passing laws that fundamentally undermine democracy.
Yeah less great of a battlecry but in terms of ordinary liberties e.g. licenses for everything except guns, safety regulations, alcohol consumption homeowners association rules, bylaws, FDA regulations America is basically the same In fact America is like the only country to outlaw the sale of kinder surprise eggs.
I remember when I was learning about American politics, I thought it was weird how the candidates of the same party tore each other to shreds in the primaries only to enthusiasticly support one of them in the finals.
Felt very hypocritical to me.
Problem of Presidential elections. They should just conduct Parliamentary elections.
@kcotte59 Well but the media only does such things, because they know they can get viewers with this. So the real problem are the people who want everything to be dramatized.
The US Votet over Faces not wath are realy done!
Germany has tree big Partys, and too miner, partical all vote are in the Parlament not olny the winner, A party get seat if the had 5 % of the Vote all over.
Ourer Chanoler has to have, the Parlament after Her, the Parlament can disingeer wife her or vote for a new Chanoler or can end the Term.

Point is we Vote more over the Performens of the Party and wath they have pland to do next, than over Baby Kissing Faces!!
Do That stund in Germany and the Germans make Jokes over you for years!
Its not just weird, its scary, pathetic and not trying to fearmonger but could be world ending at worst, let's be real here. It also continues to happen because the media owns the 2 parties that advertise to us our entire lives. The entire government is set up to have checks and balances so that the people don't have to intervene. To which I say the founding fathers didn't have the internet or mass media. The average American is MUCH more worldly and better equipped relatively speaking to someone almost a quarter millennia ago. We REALLY need to re examine the way you run a country. Not like this. Not when the "representatives" that are "elected" go against what the people want, because the people that need reps the most don't care enough to run or vote based on their values because of the current system. Rank choice voting could fix some of this!!!

Chris Hedges said it best: “The Democratic Party is what the Republican Party used to be, and the Republican Party has gone insane”.
Agreed
You do realize that California has abolished anti-racism laws, correct? How about the green new deal that would involve goverment takeover, getting rid of planes, cars, and any gas powered vehicle, also involved destroying every building in the US to make green new buildings and using a yet to be discovered energy source to power instead of gas, as well as giving money to people who don't feel like working. The democratic party is just good at not talking about how crazy it is to anyone who isn't paying attention to the finer details. The dems fabricated the russia hoax for several years with no evidence and even deliberately worked with the media and FBI to try to send russians to Trump people, Gen Flynn willingly cooperated with the FBI to prove his innocence only to be railroaded for not remembering word for word his conversation with a Russian ambassador. The Steele dossier was literally said to be unreliable by the person who made it and was still used as justification to spy and investigate US citizens. I'm german, and I think our election process is much more representative than the british, french or american system - which is ironic, since these nations established democracy in germany (you know the story). Therefore I don't really like the approach this show suggests. The german system is simple: We don't elect our goverment, we just elect our parliaments. And whichever party has the most votes gets the chancellor. But since no party ever has the majority, the have to build coalitions, which - mostly - prevents extreme decisions. And, most importantly, the seats of our parliament are distributed by what americans call "popular vote". Means when party A gets 50% of the votes, party B 30% and party C 20%, they get 50, 30 and 20 seats (it's a bit more complicated in reality obviously, but that's the basic mechanism). In this system, EVERY vote counts. I think this "the winner takes it all" principle rather unfair, because if you are a red voter in a blue state in america (or vice versa), your vote is basically useless, and that's violating a core principle of democacy. And again, it has a strong ironic that the countries that build up our democracy have a less democratic approach.
But we (germans) vote "two houses" at the same time (have to make two checkmarks by the election) and this is seen as to complex. If the US would have our system, they would have to give one vote for a local representative (Who has to represent the interests of my local area) and one for the politcal party which program fits best to my interests.
And do not forget our strict campain rules in germany. No buyed TV-Times (all parties have by law the same air-time on radio and tv. To buy additional air-time is not allowed (Rich parties have the same chance to "send their messages" like poor parties), limited time phase for the Campaign. So no need to make an expensice 2 Year campaign run etc.
Well, the USA has power over almost all elections, so.
That sounds not good
That is basically the Westminster system. Well here in Australia we all elect our house of reps by electing your member of the district. Whoever has 50% gets to form government. The leader of the main two parties Labor and liberal generally form government (liberals are actual yh in a coalition with the nationals party but that's complicated) then at the same time we elect half our Senate and that's a very basic Australian federal government.
@kcotte59I really can't tell wether this is irony or not.

The Republicans that support him will lose their seats if this happens. Lol
Why can’t we require id to vote ask yourself that
@Thomas Larkin what exactly is the purpose for requiring an id to vote, like an honest and genuine reason why you support requiring everyone to show an id to vote?
those legislators who espouse this tactic are being disingenuous, they have a created a solution for which there exists no problem, at least not any of the problems they publicly espouse... the real problem is that the Republican party is losing the demographic battle so to speak and the only way these politicians see a viable way for them to remain in power, at least in the short term(which is all most of them are concerned about becsuse they are old anyway) is to try to make it harder to vote, because it has been shown that tactics that make voting more exclusive benefit r's more than d's.....
so all of that said, i am genuinely curious, honestly not attacking you at all, why do you personally support requiring all voters to present an id to vote? (since the year 2000, there have only been 31 credible voter impersonation cases in all of the elections nationwide.... 31, so it can't hinestly be about voter fraud, that is a problem that does not largely exist at all...)
Bad Trump impression: “I’m always gonna vote for me first folks, always myself first, but if I somehow UNBELIEVABLY don’t get 50% of the vote, then my second choice, IS MY DAUGHTER, Ivanka Trump. She’s a great manager people. Great manager. SHE’LL BE TOUGH ON CHINA, great manager. Perfect for this great nation.”
@@thespeedofchillax6691: There's a simple reason for why republicans see voter fraud everywhere: their systemic campaign of voter suppression, voter roll purging, and other forms of disenfranchisement is tantamount to voter fraud. Deep, deep, DEEP down, at the very bottom of their collective subconsciousness, they somewhat understand this, and the repressed guilt over it is manifesting as yet more psychological projecting. They see crime and punishable offenses everywhere precisely because they are constantly committing those very same offenses.

I live in Maine, where we have ranked-choice voting after many years of having governors win with a plurality but a minority of the vote. It's good to finally have a governor who represents the majority of us.
crazy talk
@@jv-lk7bc ?
The problem I see with your voting system, even with ranked-choice voting is that there is still a minority who doesn't have any voice. Now, I get that with a governor or a president, there can only ever be one at a time, so yeah, majority should rule on who it will be. But then you have your parliaments. Your district system works the same way, one district, one representative. In theory it is possible for one party to get half + 1 votes in every single district (I said theory, ok ;)) and that party would then occupy literally every single seat in the house of representatives, leaving the remainin half - 50 voters without any voice in their most important democratic institution... A system that allows that possibility is a broken system and it should be repaired.
@@morfanaion isnt having majority the idea of democracy?
@@vikumwijekoon3166 dealing in absolutes is always a bad idea, no matter the circumstances. Absolute majorities mean that there is no counterargument coming to the table and your house of democracy comes down to an echochamber. But that isn't even the biggest problem in the US. The way things are set up, you can basically only have someone from party A or someone from party B. There is no middle ground. But hardly anyone will ever agree to 100% of the ideas of either candidate. There might be someone with different ideas that you agree with more, but since that one is not of one of the two major parties, that one is basically non-electable. And thus you choose not necessarily for the one you agree with most, but for the most electable person that is not the one you disagree with the most. I've written an extensive reply on the video where I go into the system that we have in my country, where you actually have several political parties (in my country 13 atm) within parliament, none of which has an absolute majority (the biggest one actually only has 22% of parliament). That means that it becomes next to impossible to work with political absolutes and you are basically forced to seek the middle ground with several parties to get to new laws. That's what I mean with having everyone have a voice in your democracy. It means that your opinions get a decent representation in your house of democracy.
I can't explain what took me so long, but I became a new subscriber, today. Dude, you rock.

Yet another thing that Andrew Yang talked extensively about during his campaign, Ranked Choice Voting. If I didn't know better, I would think Hasan was full Yang Gang, that's the third video in just a few weeks about Yang's talking points. News Industry one talked two weeks ago talked about how democracy is dying because the local news industry is dying and College one last week talked about random college administrators being the reason why college costs are increasing. I haven't heard any other person cite the reason before until Yang did, and now Hasan.
Didn't he have amdrew yang talk with him on his show? Of course he's #yangang

Australia has had ranked choice voting for 100 years, and compulsory voting for decades. The lowest turnout at a federal election was 91% in 2016.
Only 66% of Canadian's voted in 2019, record breaking numbers in Canada. This was with mail-in ballots, advanced in-person voting, fast tracked voter registration, and parental vouching of dependent children of voting age.

The patriot act is so underrated.
I already knew all this about how ranked choice elections would fix everything. But my favorite part of the video was the fact that AOC was the ONLY politician I've ever seen interviewed by Hasan that was completely not fazed at all by his memes and references and weirdness :P
She plays League of Legends, hardly anything can weird her out anymore
It's because she's not an aging politician who has forgotten what it's like to be an average person, and she grew up with the same concerns as young people who feel betrayed by the world created by boomers.Memes are funny, but they're a new expression of speech that reflects how we interpret current events.
Look at Australia. Ranked choice voting will NOT fix everything. We still have a two party system. We still have very divisive politics. Though that’s partly due to the fact that Rupert Murdoch owns the majority share of our private media. That doesn’t help.
We do have minor parties, but that’s exactly what they are- minor. They very occasionally have the balance of power in the Senate. That’s about it though.
Don’t get me wrong, preferential voting is better than what you have now. But it won’t be enough to fix it. Not enough by far.
fairylights I think it’s better than winner takes all, I just want to be very clear that it will not “fix everything”. And adding something else like mixed member representation would also be good too. But even that won’t fix everything. Nothing will.
@@katherinemorelle7115 "fix everything" was an exaggeration. The point of the comment was to focus on how much I like AOC.
But yes, there are many problems with this country. Things that need to change besides ranked choice voting: 1) Electoral college needs to go. 2) Senate needs to go or the seats need to be much closer to the population's representation in the House. 3) Anonymous campaign donations need to be illegal. 4) Gerrymandering needs to be illegal

CGP Grey: Tell me more...
Aye...........booty be ‘licious
we need rank-choice with approval. I would rank trump #2 in my options, but I don't ever want to vote for him. rank with approval eventually leads to plurality issues as well if we have a bunch of political parties
@@idnehabhi once you get to ranked choice voting in first place it is easier to make upgrades. In this case perfect is absolutely the enemy of good enough. FPTP winner take all is so bad and so hard to get rid off...... the best system to upgrade to is whatever has the most realistic chance of getting adopted. Since the options aren't FPTP, RCV and approval voting. Approval voting is so obscure and radical it has zero adoption chance. Options are: slim chance to move to RCV and high probability of staying on FPTP. rest of the methods have negligible adoption chances.
Once USA has adopted RCV, it can start to talk about what would be the best system. To begin with there is then in place precedent of changing voting method. At the moment FPTP and winner take all are holy cows in many parts in USA. So if one has to do just smallest change to the next closest/ worst system, so be it. It opens the path to further improments later.
@@idnehabhi In some RCV versions you can simply stop ranking candidares past some point and (if no ranked candidate remains) your vote is simply ignored.
