Don't forget this type of media still has an enormous bias, they are still private business, half of what Hassan dose could be considered product placement in a form of Parodies en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_placement#Parodies Also how often dose the criticism reach the level of systemic analysis("X is happening because of some fundamental aspect of the system we live in" like the profit incentive and private property ownership) VS how often is the criticism kept at a level of "some bad apples" (individual criticism, this company or person did a bad thing) Because the later type of criticism is trivial, virtually all societies produced such critics and tolerated them. So how often do you hear Hassan, John Oliver, Trevor Noah talk about the systemic analysis of these issue and how much is it just "some bad apples" For more on this i would recommend Noam Chompsky's works en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_model
@@fabianbinder3681 Is that what people take away from these shows? That's first of all, second: that's not relevant to my point, your talking the possibility of people changing the system because they realized that thous individual examples constitute evidence for a systemic problem, i am only talking about the nature of media and there output of narratives about our societies and weather or not they are propagandist in nature or are competitive and holding people in power and the system in check(which is the mainstream perception).
And the thing is, public transit has the association with low-income people and by extension, the mental concept is black and brown people. This bias, subconscious or not, is driving a lot of this apathy and unwillingness to invest in public transit. But public transit is one of those things that while the most benefit might be for those who need it to get around, it's actually hugely beneficial for everyone else as well. I don't want to sit in hour-long traffic jams every day to and from my job in the city. I don't want to pay for gas or parking. Less driving also means my car doesn't have as much wear and tear and that translates to less money spent on repairs or checkups. It's better for the environment, it's space-saving not to have to build such big roads for so many cars and with options like trains or subways, it's also much much faster than if you were driving. Except these corporate fuckers just had to come in and ruin things for everyone else like always.
Nothing subconscious about it. Ride the actual public transit instead of theorizing about it, and you will see. I'm sick of taking public transit in my city. The smell, the filth, the crazies.
As a citizen of central Florida. Having the Sunrail, has helped me gain employment in areas that would otherwise be only accessible by car. Even though service is good during the week, the lack of service at nights and weekends does cause some issues for the Sunrail and my work hours. We need more support and funding for all forms of public transport. Not just roads. We need funding for trains, trams, buses, lightrail and many others.
As a citizen of South Florida, our public transportation is a joke. If you miss your bus, you have to wait an hour for the next one. Most places are only accessable by car and even getting to a train would mean taking multiple buses and ride share apps to the station.
I'm glad to hear that the Sunrail has been working out for you. Does it already have lines to Orlando or no, because coming from NYC to Orlando was the craziest shit for me. For someone who can't afford a car and solely relies on public transit, this scares me. It's already frustrating doing an hour commute for a 15 min drive, as is. So depressing. Sigh...
I'm from Milwaukee and live near the Zoo interchange. It took a long time to build, but it is a marvel of engineering, and really beautiful to look at. I'm glad that at least they could finish it. I wish we could all get behind other projects like this. I would love to see us be more like Japan. I don't know any large city that doesn't benefit from at least some public transit. I have always thought monorails would be in our future. Corruption needs to be illegal! We need a variety of types of transit in any city. My sons take the bus, and we moved where we live to be right on a good bus line. We have advocated for better funding for busses, and other forms of public transit. Advocating really works. We went as a family to talk to our Mayor, our representatives, and Scott Walker. He's from my town, and my kids went to the same school as his kids. In our city, we now have more and better bike lanes and bike bridges, and even a trolley system now. I do a lot of walking and we have some really nice off road paved and unpaved walking paths and dog walking paths through the woods along the river. As well as off road biking trails right through the city but in wooded areas. I would love to see city planners work on having more walkable communities, like mine. I can get anything I want or need within two miles of my house. And we are on all the bus lines to downtown. Our public transit is underfunded, but I was so happy to see our busses become completely accessible. My son uses a wheelchair, and the busses were too hard to take for regular use, so I had to drive him everywhere for the longest time. I think you missed an opportunity to talk about how busses are important for the disabled and elderly. It's also super important for caregivers because generally these are low wage jobs that can't support a car. I think some people here oppose public transit because our city is so segregated. The differences in lifestyle between one area and the next can be like traveling to another country over a span of just a few blocks. We are right on the edge, and the city struggles with potential crime wherever the busses are. So some people blame public transit. However, I sometimes wonder if the allocated money is really all getting to the busses and bus drivers. I hate it when politics gets in the way of doing anything. We had this downtown interchange that sat unfinished for maybe 20 years. I'm glad it was rerouted to leave our beautiful lakefront with Lake Drive alone. It became a joke as "the highway to nowhere." You can see it in the original Blues Brothers movie. We needed to fix the zoo interchange, but holding one project hostage to another is not the way to go. This just slows government down to a halt. Advocate for what you want, people do listen, but don't just oppose something other people are doing. If the Koch brothers want to make money investing in petroleum products, that's great, but interfering in various other types of transportation is not true competition. It's corruption. We all fund the things the Koch brothers are doing, it's our money they are using. We are buying their petroleum. We are investors in their companies. We can disinvest from them. We can buy different types of energy and use different types of ways to get around. Every dollar you spend is a vote for more of that. And the good thing is, you get to decide.
Like it or not, there aren't enough resources to go around. And no matter how much you might want to support everything, in the end, it's the stuff that gives rich people more money and increases inequality that gets to go through. That's pretty much the norm in America, and you should count yourself lucky if that bias hasn't remanded you to extreme hardship for your entire life.
I too am from Milwaukee. Did you know that when he was county executive in 2002, he pushed an initiative to cut bus lines that went from the black side of town to the white side of town? We advocated for ourselves and we were ignored. So maybe think about advocating alongside anyone who wants to expand the bus system.
Thank you for this piece. The Koch bill failed miserably today so we get to expand our trains here in Phoenix! I’m sure a lot of it was due to this piece! Thank you for your service!
It's the same attitude here in Quebec City, the predominant attitude is that only money spent on car infrastructure is not wasted. The streets downtown were designed for horses, in order to increase capacity, you have to tunnel. The tramway is decades overdue if we ever get it. I can't wait so I bought an e-fat bike but I still need winter public transit.

A group that gets kind of left out in this public transport conversation is those with some kind of disability that means they can’t drive. For example, my eyesight is bad enough that I can’t drive, and I’m lucky enough to live in a place with great public transport infrastructure. If you disregard your public transport, you disregard the people who can’t drive for medical or financial reasons. Just imagine how tough it would be for someone who doesn’t have the use of their legs or someone who is fully blind to commute without good public transport. Without a good public transport infrastructure, they’d either have to pay a lot of money for flats close to their work, or pay lots of money for taxis to work.

Fast trains go every 10 minutes in the West off the country during rush ours. There are also trams, buses and underground. In the trains there is WiFi and places to work during your travel. We also have ab excellent high way system. The government maintains and renew the infrastructure on an regular base. Not like on the US where everything is old, worn and broken.
Here in Albuquerque we had a kinda ok city bus system, but then the previous mayor decided to push through the so-called ART (Albuquerque Rapid Transit) along the main central road appropriately named Central Avenue. The system was built, had to be redone a few times due to the heights of platforms not matching the new bus doors, traffic striping, and signals not working. The buses came but then were sent back due to leaking batteries (the buses were electric), and numerous defects. The contract for the buses was cancelled, went to court, renegotiated, a new bus contractor was found and signed on as the bus provider. Meanwhile where Central Avenue used to have really good double bendy buses and regular buses running back and forth efficiently and two full lanes for car traffic we now have no ART buses since no buses have been shipped here, Central is down to one lane for cars each way and the cost of course quadrupled in the all this process. Not to mention the disruption to businesses to construct the ART system in which many businesses closed their doors no customers could get to them. The ART project was clusterfuck from the beginning, middle and we have yet to see the end.

@capitalism kills way more not a lot to tell as I just really started, currently work in transportation planning so I see a lot of those proposed projects that Hasan talked about in the episode pass by and get money thrown at them but end up getting shut down because it's more financially beneficial to the state in the short run to invest in making express lanes with tolls than waiting years and years for improved public transport.
@@_karlavane_ local municipality and state leader have their hands tied. They focus on express lanes and tolls so it doesn't effect their chances for employment for the next position. Our best chance for public transit is public private partnerships. It is not the core competency of most individuals that work in government. If we really cared about affordability we would work on this a longtime ago. I think procuring land near transit stops affordable housing units and property taxes/impacts fee to allocate money to longterm train line maintenance.
I'm in Phoenix and I know that the light rail has been a boon to the communities surrounding the train! And the train is nice, clean and convenient. I wish it would expand into my neighborhood. Traffic is bad here and our public transportation in general is just not good enough. I lived in Seattle and took the bus everywhere, but here in Phoenix it takes me two hours to go 20 minutes down the road. We desperately need better public transportation. Our highways already have tons of lanes and it isn't solving our problems with congestion. Also, it doesn't help people who can't afford multiple cars and who would really benefit from a good public transportation system. (Me!) Don't forget this type of media still has an enormous bias, they are still private business, half of what Hassan dose could be considered product placement in a form of Parodies
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_placement#Parodies
Also how often dose the criticism reach the level of systemic analysis("X is happening because of some fundamental aspect of the system we live in" like the profit incentive and private property ownership) VS how often is the criticism kept at a level of "some bad apples" (individual criticism, this company or person did a bad thing)
Because the later type of criticism is trivial, virtually all societies produced such critics and tolerated them.
So how often do you hear Hassan, John Oliver, Trevor Noah talk about the systemic analysis of these issue and how much is it just "some bad apples"

@@wordwonderg_0194 Yeah but the USA is a developed country and the richtest country in the world
And the thing is, public transit has the association with low-income people and by extension, the mental concept is black and brown people.
Sad indeed and think 🤔 of how many people could work out of state and come home the same day if we had great railroad 🚆
Well said.

Prop 105 went DOWN!!
And David Koch died.
This show is saving the world, one issue at a time!

Google: *do you mean bicycle?*
Well, its not wrong...
But infrastructure-wise we blow the US out of the water. Roads, rails and bus transit are way better here. And then there's like half that cycles to work...
The rail system is actually pretty solid as well. The Hague has great trams and both Amsterdam and Rotterdam have a u-bahn system.
@@elliotunderhill3617 I agree. Just got back from Amsterdam this morning. The public transportation just rocks. There is a tube or a tram reaching just about everywhere you want. We took our car via ferry to hotel next to the tube/metro and we had an awesome time there.
🤪🤪🤪 we have the best infrastructure when it comes to bicycle pads. The government stimulates it and there are a lot off employers pay for an part off the bike if you use to get to and from work.
Shout out to Utrecht -- lovely, lovely city.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: get👏🏾money 👏🏾out👏🏾of 👏🏾politics👏🏾 it will solve so many of our problems.
solid episode, as usual. and kudos to the graphics department, as always.

one thing i love about this show is that Hasan doesn't wait for the audience's laugh and prolong the show but goes straight to the next information.
7:30 "yeah just catch up" lol
Every day for who you are Hasan Minhaj and the good work you do for the greatness of All, I kindly thank you. Blessings to you and yours.

"The bus came the moment you left."
That one hurt....
Just like my girlfriend
I once waited for a bus for over 2 hours and the moment I turned around and went to grab a bite to eat in the corner store 5 busses showed up.
Or: "We all want to f#ck that bus now?"

As someone who works for my state DOT I felt this on a spiritual level lol
(Me!)
Additionally, the air quality is crap and all of the concrete is making Phoenix hotter than it's historic averages. There are just so many ways that Phoenix would benefit from a good public transportation system. I'm showing this video to anyone who will sit still long enough to watch it.
Gotta watch for more propositions when they come at it again :)
8:56 I remember when it seemed like there was a new injury every week for weeks!! It kind of made me want to go more..
Think about all the CO2 emission that you can reduce using a coordinated Public transport
Watching this ep as I wait for the train that’s been 1 minute away for the last 15 minutes
Gintama says hi
this happens to me when i wait for the bus, because of the unreliablity of the bus and the infrequency of buses its actually easier to just take a rentable electric powered bike the 2 miles to my college (JUMP Bikes) it took me less time simply because when i was ready to leave i can leave// waiting for the bus can be hit or miss that its on time and sometiems they drive past me all together.
Uber. Just. Uber.
@@Viaishta uber costs me hella money and taking ubers all the time is econimically as unfeasable as owning a car if ur below the poverty line. being able to transport myself to work for free or via public trasnport rather than paying 10$( one hours wage) for a ride to work. uber doesnt do enough to support loyal repeat customers who would rely on these services to get to work if only they were paid enough to afford the high prices we pay for everything
He is putting a lot effort we all should support hasan
This episode made my day. I think it’s the best Patriot Act episode I’ve seen so far.
Thank you, Hassan. You’re a gem.
Yes.
*Hasan* - America's transportation system sucks!
*Me* - *Laughs in German*
@@abendrot___8055 hahah the trains do tend be a late sometimes, and its usually 'Technisches Störung', but its not too bad

Dark Inferno what does this have to do with public transit?
Other than the fact that it smells of urine all the time and it's very expensive, its alright
Laughs in Indian
Love the fact you mentioned the massive ROI for society on public transit.
What a well-researched, important episode!
Phoenix voted no on prop. 105 and clears the way for the light rail expansion.
Now people have to ride it.
The public transport system here in Australia is interesting. Whenever people come over here from Europe they always say something like "Man your public transport sucks. It's so bad." When I've had friends come over from the USA, they've said "OMG, your public transport system is amazing. It's so good. I wish we had this."
I'm from the Netherlands, sign me up for that Zoo Interchange program, sounds fun!
Tim van Akkeren but dude.. why you want to go zoo.. When you have Amsterdam.. 😲
Nashville represent. Wow, crazy you brought up the Koch brothers cause that's actually what happened lmaooo. They turned it around in like a few days. Poured in millions.
i live here too and had no idea that's what happened. i know public opinion turned quick (i had some qualms with what parts of town they wanted to lay track) but i still would've rather we have it than not
Hasan Minhaj was truly educating the country to the truth of what's happening in the country in an witty humourous way. I's a tragedy that Netflix ended Patriot Act. It's like shutting out the voice of reasoning and truth. He must have pissed of many who prefers Americans to stay illiterate. Netflix should bring it back and Hasan should be able to continue to question relevant issues facing the country. He's the best of the comedians and belongs in the same category as John Oliver and John Stewart. Thank you Hasan.
I wrote a research paper about this topic, so watching this video made me feel very vindicated.

@The Elite Killa im writing a speech and using this as evidence lol
Wow, have you heard the news? David Koch has passed. The timing...
He died saying he passed sounds like he is driving.
@Lucid _2_Win on a highway to hell?
Long overdue too
The intro is relateable .
I couldn't go to school today because of trains deciding not to work.
I had four hours of school, first two are a class test and second two are German.
If would have taken the train that was coming after two hours, I'd have been late to the third lesson.
I decided not to go for an hour of German, it's not my fault anyway.
I learned that:
