Dude, I think you twisted the ending. The guy with long hair at the end who makes the crying face is ICHI. He reverted to his original madness after kicking a can and finding some thugs who tried to pick a fight with him. Takeshi, the old man's new "machine," is seen coming out of an alleyway with blood. But the ending suggests that ICHI didn't fully transform into a normal person and that the monster is still there.
@@TheMaskedMan Yeah. You actually see Ichi interact with the little boy, Takeshi, right before he kicks the can. The boy is being molded into Ichi's replacement, though.
I read this a few months ago and Ichi is definitely the worst protagonist of anything I've ever read. The more you read, the more you realize that he has zero redeeming qualities. He's just a broken and manipulated victim of his circumstances. Once he crossed the line and killed the innocent - and already severely abused - sex worker, there was no possibility of redemption for a satisfying ending for that manga.
It's worse when you realize he's the son of a rich person by the end who participates in these fantasies willingly. Yes he is a victim of trauma but he is also a man who refuses to take accountability, something that at least the Yakuza aren't guilty of.
@@nono9543 That's.....not true at all lol Ichi's name was Hajime Shiroishi. He was bullied and beaten daily at school and had parents that only pestered him to do better and stop being a weakling. Through a series of events and circumstances, Hajime finds out he has certain....desires. He ends up killing his parents and the boy that was bullying him, which lands him in a mental ward. Jiji finds him and then grooms him to become an assassin, using his mental illness and unchecked sexual desires to turn him into a killing machine. One thing, if my memory doesnt fail me, the guy at the end wasnt the kid from the booth, but Ichi, he became that "normal" guy, you can see the kid coming out of an alley after having killed someone, Ichi even recognizes him and tells him "Its me, your big bro, Shiroishi"
Important note: Jijii isn’t actually Ichi’s uncle, as calling older men “uncle” is an honorary custom in Japan to show your respect towards your elders Also, Ichi is very much alive at the end of the manga, he just turned his life around as a normal citizen
