I swear the people who design these kinds of cambered back roads are for sure driving enthusiasts...you don't just so happen to make perfect touge roads.
Not a backroad; Hwy 129 (Tail of the Dragon) in NC/TN. The Civic is Killboy's (the local photographer in the area) and he makes a living on this road every day. I'm sure he knows it like the back of his hand. Also, he drives his S2K more than his hatch.

They make the beginning of the race a hassle especially if you are trying to pass. Acceleration is key in corners, but entrance and braking can compensate if you can do it better than the other person
From 2:20 on is where it was at full boogie.
Acceleration is best at exit speed.

@@KenKaneki-oi6kh I made that comment 1 year ago. In the time that I have owned my restored 106hp base model del sol, THIS is exactly what hondas are good at. In idaho we have a road called Bogus basin road. Its the state Touge. The del sol can do EVERY corner but the U going 45 mph or higher without having to slow down for them. It feels like a gokart where you always have grip.
Way more enjoyable and entertaining than straight line quarter mile races. Then again to each their own. That hatch has crazy pick up lol

Marco Brancorsini yea no. Drag racing is pushing a car to it limits. And when you have extremely high powered machines, its difficult to control 1000+, launch and keep it straight.

Ricky R There are also 1000hp track cars, imagine how difficult they are to control in corners. Drag racing may require some skill but racing with corners requires even more skill and it's much more fun to perform and to watch.
Marco Brancorsini more skill? And you know this because? And yea 1000 hp track cars are backed by millions of dollars, companies, and raced through sanctions. The drag scene can build 1000+ hp cars out of their garage and drive it themselves. That skill is much more appealing to me.
Only idiots will say that wing doesn't help keep the rear planted onto the pavement. *Everything* about this civic is performance oriented. If they were both even giving it 80% you would be amazed at what they could both do in their own element. I'd say these fellas were just cruising and having a good time. Nobody here was trying hard. (People need to realize that real life isn't Forza, nobody drives their car 100% on public roads. The few that do end up dead, or in jail)

falchulk it’s takes roughly 40mph with minimal downforce from a properly designed wing to apply 300+ lbs of downforce. If I can hit that speed with my lightly modified 350z turbo making 470hp on tighter roads, these guys sure as hell can. From someone who does this on a weekly basis they are hitting some pretty decent speeds. Also note most videos don’t do speed or distance justice. I’ve been 2ft from a friends back bumper and it looks like 100ft on camera. I hit 80mph and it looks like 20 on the video. I’d say on average these guys are running 40-60 mph.
People also don’t realize how much effect on grip rear traction has on a FWD car. Especially ones as light as an EG. 4 wheels is always better than 3. Not to mention the effect on weight distribution.

It’s a huge amount of drag placed on the car. Aero isn’t for gas mileage it’s for traction, downforce and grip. So what racing school did you go to with this mass amount of knowledge?

He has it, he probably knows more than you ever will about driving and performance with how well he built and drove that car. Why does this bother you so much?

falchulk it’s most likely producing about 30lbs of downforce at the rear but still that’s enough to keep the rear end balanced at higher speeds. If he tuned with the wing in mind then he set up the mechanical grip to have more oversteer on low speed (less than 35mph) and the wing balances that back to neutral anything above that. Obviously without a wind tunnel it comes down to the driver and how they feel the car respond to changes in tuning.
CK_32 Unless you made the wing yourself or it’s off eBay, most modern wings are tuned efficiently to create more downforce than drag. That’s just a baby 3D wing which at most in free stream air will produce about 100lbs of downforce @ 120mph. Now if it was 66” with a 10”+ chord and dual element then you might see 300lbs of downforce at the expense of top speed and gas mileage...unless you’re running a DRS

I think both have a place in street racing except if you're not gonna stay in your lane it needs to be real late at night or u have a spotter with walky talkies

Well the eg is legendary in the class its in I must say. If I ever owned a Honda it would have to be an eg for me. That's my baby. To me it's the lambo of the broke tuner section
People love to forget that Honda is the winningest manufacturer in motor racing history. EG's don't engineer themselves.
Let us remember how competitive the B16 EG was in JTC. Even blacktop trueno's struggled until Toyota made the MR2.

Nahh you'd be surprised what a decent suspension setup and driver mod can do. My Civic is a monster in the corners, but sadly mostly everyone in my area only likes drags and highway pulls so i only get to have fun at the track or with friends.

TM 16 it is harder to chase. You have to worry about the car in front and you could miss break points watching them.
Hardly. All you do is follow the persons line. Leading is harder. The Civic is barely on the brakes and is braking as late in to the turn as he can and getting off the brakes as early as he can which is spot on. Faster exit speed.

We actually have some super killer roads like this in San Diego including a touge freeway! (8 east going down into the desert) but there is just so much traffic everywhere it adds a very exciting dynamic to racing

I noticed that also. He should have used a pull off instead of holding up traffic.
I don't know how hard the civic was pushing it, but it took all I had to keep up. He does let off near the end when we are past the final mile marker to cool off.
That's killboy's Civic. He was barely driving. He's one of the fastest around on that road.

We have roads here like this one and I can say from experience that just because the gtr has more power doesn't mean it'll win. Most of the straights aren't long enough to let it open up all the way. It's more important to be able to corner and maintain your speed and traction. But then again I feel like both cars weren't going 100% because neither were staying in lower gears. I'm not sure where the GTR's main power kicks in but im sure it's a bit higher up in its rpms. Same with that civic.
Regardless this is a nice vid to watch. I thought this was Tennessee until reading through the comments. There's a lot of winding roads in the south lol

I drive my civic like that every day. Fwd keeps you well grounded through turns like these if you know how to drive.
MJSMIR yup people think fwd can't corner good but it's all about the driver and skill tbh left foot braking and trail braking are a must plus heel toe

Fwd corners as good as anything! The problem is traction out of the bends when you have too much power! Youll be hard pressed to find a rwd car with the same power as a civic type r match its Nurburgring time! Weight on the driven wheels is quite handy on road tyres, rwd cars get too light on the back end and oversteer which may look good but isnt the fastest way around a bend.
Don't forget about understeer in FWD...
They literally cannot corner hard enough to be touge competive in a lot of cases. It's not traction. It's understeer.
That's not to say that fwd is bad at all! It's almost self-correcting under acceleration. But compared to RWD and rear biased AWD, they just dont have the same steering angle choices during acceleration.

This is a perfect place for that civic, lots of tight technical turns. Something that a heavy beast like godzilla would have a harder time with. You do still hear when the GTR is cutting throttle before it get too close to the honda.

Only 40% sure that the GTR would gap that hatchback because you wpuld here the slip of the tire in the road it doesnt have enough traction pn the road so its hard for him to gap up and there are not enpugh straights on the road so it cannot pull up hard enough.

Doubt it... I like GTRs but this is downhill... And winding road... so very heavy car and Turbo sux in that.. so NA will do better although I don't know if the Civic is NA but there's already a weight advantage so less suffering in the tires and brakes

That is a good balanced civic, probably took their time developing the gearbox ratio's and suspension/tire setup, very nice

I can see how light weight car can be good in backroad now. Both car moves differently and from the video I could see how heavy the gtr is through bend compare to the lighter civic. Both great car.

trying to imagine how fucked the gtr would have been without AWD. Giving it that much throttle early out of a sharp turn could turn nasty nasty nasty. Both cars have great drivers.
I understand what you mean. I had a Z06 before the GTR and I had to be a lot more careful with the throttle or things would not end well.
