He's so damn right about understanding your role and staying ready. I'm a Mavs fan and I remember we had a 3rd center in Salah Mejri. The guy wouldn't play for 20+ games in a row,than he would check in and dude looked ready. He was ready to play. In the games he didn't play,his energy was high on the bench,was always part of the team even when he didn't play. Tha'ts the most important thing if you are a bench warmer in the NBA. Staying ready and understading your role once you get on the court.

People talking about competition but for most players, they are playing to KEEP their job. John Lucas III made 5.7MILLION by keeping quiet and playing his role. That's generational wealth. Getting exposed and crossed over is a easy way to show GM's and coaches you can't play. Getting the Rose flu at least puts you OUT of the limelight. Its shameful but you get to live and collect a cheque another day.
Interesting take, can't really argue against it either. Unless you put up high numbers, your reputation will be all you have in the league. For example Paul George, the only thing saving him right now is his past performances (he is really balling right now too), but pretend if he was a solid role player who didn't show up at all in the playoffs? His phone would be very quiet in the off-season.
@@ralx225b Also a lot of NBA players grew up either poor, or middle class. They're trying to make a living / get out of their old situations FIRST, and trying to be great second. It's why there's the saying some players "are in it for the NBA lifestyle, not to compete". Being famous, partying, the women, getting a great salary, taking care of those around us. Why jeopardize it for a meaningless game?

I don't like how much players rest these days since it makes it questionable to buy a ticket to the game if a guy you wanna see might be sitting, but it's definitely understandable from their perspective, if you get a career altering injury you have to live with that, the team organization and the NBA will move on, gotta protect yourself.
