Lucky Hank, starring Bob Odenkirk, premieres March 19 on AMC.
Season Four - Episode Thirteen: "Face Off"
Episode Description:
As Jesse faces police scrutiny for his comments to Andrea, Walt desperately plots to gain the upper-hand within his season-long game of wits with meth kingpin Gus.
Episode Overview:
As Walt tracks him down in the hospital waiting room to ask how their plan to kill Gus could have gone awry, Jesse is surprised when two detectives arrive to ask about the poison that is threatening the life of Andrea’s son Brock. Leaving Jesse to talk his way out of the sticky situation, Walt heads to Saul’s office where he finds his secretary Francesca frantically shredding anything that could link her boss to the drug ring. With Francesca demanding money in exchange for contacting Saul, Walt then heads home where he finds a pair of Gus’ hit men waiting. After using an elderly neighbor to distract them, he sneaks inside and recovers some cash from the crawl space hiding spot. Meanwhile, after calling Saul to intervene in the interrogation, Jesse decides to use what he knows about the feud with Tio Salamanca to draw Gus into a trap.
Because he hates Gus even more than he does Walt or Jesse, Tio agrees to help. Though the old man actually refuses say anything of value to the DEA, all Walt needs is for Gus to know that a meeting has taken place between Tio and Hank. So, unaware of what Walt has in store for him, Gus sends a henchman to make sure that Tio’s nursing home room isn’t under surveillance. Meanwhile, after learning that Brock is going to make it, Jesse is surprised to find that he’s been cleared of any suspicion in the poisoning. But before he can get back to the hospital room with the good news, he’s kidnapped by Gus’ thug and taken back to the lab where he’s forced continue working.
Once he’s been assured that the coast is clear, Gus heads inside the nursing home with plans to kill Tio. But before Gus and his sidekick can give him a lethal injection, Tio triggers a bomb that Walt rigged to his wheelchair, blowing the three of them to kingdom come. With Gus out of the way, all that’s left for Walt to do is destroy the superlab. Making his way inside, he dispatches the guards and, with Jesse’s help, turns the laundry into an inferno that destroys any evidence of their involvement in the drug ring. Finally, as Jesse heads off to reunite with Andrea, a victorious Walt is left to reunite with his family as he ponders his future.

It was brilliant because it’s exactly what always held Walt back - consciously or not, he knew his own weakness and identified the same thing in Gus
Also interesting is how Gus, after the explosion, is literally exposed as being two-faced just as he lived. One side of his face is a normal businessman, the other side a grotesque monster

I remember when I first saw this scene, and at 0:55 when Gus looks up & down at Hector, I thought for sure he would notice the bomb on the wheelchair. But it’s clear now Gus was so fueled by hate & revenge, he didn’t notice anything. Was just conjuring up his next insult. Brilliant storytelling
But when Gus realized why Hector was reefing on that bell so hard, he screamed in shock and backed away in a vain attempt to save himself. So he may not have seen the bomb at first, but he definitely saw that it was there. This scene is probably one of the the hardest-hitting ever filmed in any movie or TV series.

LOL
I don’t know what you mean by improvised. I watched a “making of “ that scene, and it took a week or two and some CGI to get it right. The makeup on Giancarlo Esposito took hours to put on and the act of him slowly walking out of the room, straightening his tie, the camera panning around with all the debris, the stunned nurses in the background, and him falling, took many takes to get it just right. Improvised means doing something off the cuff different than what’s in the script, doesn’t it?

Enemyship 😂
true lmao
In illegal businesses being a rat is a thing you don't want to be. Your own people are going to kill you even if you did it for there own safety.
Although Gustavo never ratted, he did speak to the DEA often. He was even friends with DEA agents, had BBQ parties, feeding them all food from the restaurant when Hank was shot...keeping his enemies close, just like Hank said. So in a sense, he is being hypocritical considering how regularly he interacts with the DEA. Plus, he didn't really know* what Hector actually said to the DEA (just observed going into the building). If anything, Gus was assuming Hector ratted on him, figured he was the most likely person Hector would give up, considering his entire family/friends were murdered by Gus and his men.
I get it though, Hector giving the appearance of talking to the DEA gives Gus enough of a reason and liability to kill him.
@@bizcut ratting and interacting with the police department are 2 different things

This cool walk out of the room and the adjustment of the tie would have been better suited to a Marvel movie and wasn't necessary for this series. All the other things would have been realized more realistically according to physiological and pychial laws. That's why it seems like a foreign body in the plot.
Everything you saw here is VERY realistic. What you talking about? Do you know what the brain could make you do due to trauma when an explosion like this happens?
Gus dying was so unimaginable to me that I really thought he survived when he came out. What an Character.
I wish i feel the same way, i started watching breaking bad because i watch this clip first. Still the best series of all time.
Gus has survived, who become Moff Gideon.
Same, I was so scared when he walked out of the room. Even with half of his skull exposed and hollow, I was still scared Gus was going to survive and get brutal revenge
I thought the same thing. "Jesus, is this guy a Terminator? Oh. Ohhhhhhhh."
gus survived, but only for a few seconds
Rest in peace Mark Margolis, left an incredible impact on the shows without even talking.
"La Familia es todo..."
With all due respect to Mr. Margolis, I thought he was much better when he WASN'T talking, because his Spanish was so bad. That's not an issue I have with Mark Margolis, though, but an issue with casting.
@@billyeveryteen7328 why do you care so much, its literally about a person that passed away IN REAL LIFE and you are talking about how bad his Spanish was.

This was the exact moment that Gus Fring became Harvey Dent.
If Gus was a smart man he would’ve dipped the moment Hector stared at him but he was too steeped in his revenge to realize that
Yes, what killed Gus was his hungry for revenge, his goon could easily kill Hector
I love how Gus says, "Last to look at me Hector", and then even before Hector contorts his face into a hateful specter, the second they lock eyes Gus is completely thrown, and uneasy. Even fearful.
Then he shouldn't have threatened a baby.
it's because the last time Hector made eye contact with him was when he gave away that Lalo was still alive, so Hector never did it again. So him making eye contact alerted Gus that Hector had the upper hand in this situation somehow.
@@treygraham2 i thought about that too, gus seems to have a kind of "sixth sense" like with the car bomb, maybe when he looked into hectors eyes he saw how close he was to death and didn't realize why until it was too late
Héctor: *see ya CHUMP*
😈😈😈
It was an instinctive feeling: Gus didn't know why exactly he suddenly felt so uneasy, but his gut was telling him something was wrong.
The fact that there's so much detail... you can see the muscles in the eye socket moving in correlation with the movement of the still intact eye... but even him doing his tie, even though his face has been blown off, which indicates how much he cares about his appearance... this shot is chilling...
You might be interested in the behind the scenes video about this scene. It’s on UA-cam
You can see his exposed jawbone move
Parts of his face are stuck to his suit
Idk. The manga was way more brutal. You could see the insides of his stomach and intestines and stomach.
@@accountnotusedanymore9119 the what?
You will notice when you look back at Hectors wheel chair after the explosion he is missing. This is symbolism for him blowing himself up.
Truly a brilliant decision by Vince
Stop over praising that guy pls
There’s a severed leg in the room at 2:30. Maybe Hector’s indicating that he’s free at last
This is the exact clip that got me curious to watching the show, and now makes breaking bad one of my favorite shows of all time. Bravo Vince.
I like to think the last thing that went through Gus's head, other than everything in the room, was to wonder how the hell Walt White ever got the best of him
Yes, he most certainly figured in that final second that Walt and Hector were in it together.

I like how his scream isn't of fear or surprise. It's a genuine angry scream because a crippled rival managed to gain the upper hand over someone as careful as him
no its fear
Yea nah dawg you can see the fear in the buildup to the scream 😂
Gus say HOLD to hector..
It’s all of the above
@@wancikyam929 Gus: you can’t defeat me!
Walt: hold my Hector…
I laughed and was frightened at the same time from Hector's face, but it was in this scene, where it changes from sad to violent, that I was very scared
Honestly, the last quarter of the fourth season felt anxious for everything that happened in the series, but it became calmer after this scene.
Remarkably excellent, Gustav, one of the best characters even died the best
I read the comments and found out how much detail the authors put into this scene alone. admirably.
What impresses me the most is that the expolision was a single take but it took 19 takes for the Fring walk and fall. They transitioned between these two shots so well that it looked like a single shot. You really have to look for it at 2:06, there is a small piece of insulation in front of the couch that disappears, and only a small amount of smoke was added. For the longest time, I thought it was a single shot.
The detail with the eye string moving around as he looks is so disturbing yet just shows you how much they really wanted this show to be... It's attention to detail is amazing...
The eye movement is *literally* the only thing he can do besides ringing the bell (which would end the scene). So Hectors expression is no more of a subtle detail than any other actor talking.
With that clarification out of the way, I do think that the actor that plays Hector did an absolutely fantastic job playing his character so well with such limited ways that he can.
@@nicholaskinkaid no he means the optic nerve when gus gets his face blown off, but hectors actor did do amazing
@vannie lmao
@@nicholaskinkaid if you look in Gus’s eyehole the optic nerve is still moving with Gus’s other eye

If you look closely, you can see that the missing eye is still moving in coordination with the other eye before falling over. Amazing detail.

I like that Better Call Saul explains why Hector spends most of Breaking Bad not looking Gus in the eyes. Because the last time that he did it in Better Call Saul, it turned out to be a fatal mistake and caused Lalo's defeat. It also retroactively explains why Gus was shocked when he did, because it signals to him that Hector was planning something dangerous.
How did it cause lalos defeat?
@@marioss2167 Because of his look, gus started to think that Lalo was alive
@@RyanBichara Lalo Salamanca lives
Excellent point
Wait, so is his name Hector or Theo? Or however it's spelled.
The only thing that didn't make sense was the fact that the wheelchair was still there instead of being vaporized
After rewatching BB & BCS, it’s so intoxicating to see Gus at the cusp of his vengeance and to have it all fall apart.
I wonder if pple freaked out thinking Gus was literally invincible when he walked out but before they showed the other side of his face lol
this was me lmaooo
I wasn't convinced even after that. I always thought he was gonna return
I instantly thought season 5 would be all about Walter trying to escape Gus' wrath. Began thinking of just what he was going to do as revenge for what he got. Then I saw half of his face was gone. Nice.
yep. I thought "WHY WONT THIS MOTHERFUCKER DIE?" and then I was like "oooooh daaaaamn" when they showed his face
absolutely, i remember sitting there like "How the fuck is he still alive" and then saw that he had half his fucking head evicted from his body
I loved the scene when gus decided to kill hektor by screaming so loud that the room exploded.
