Aaron Paul / Jesse did make a powerful impression in this scene. He doesn't blink an eye, his voice doesn't flinch. He saw the high potential on him and, maybe, things could have been different without Walter after that.

Yeah he just gives the guy in charge a look that says "Is this guy shit talking me?" and as soon as the guy looked away he knew he was free to school that asshole.
Not just tone, it was also the mentioning of the acid (which has a distinctive name which sounds the same in both languages), the rest was pretty easy to get from context.
"we're gonna scour every cook surface, and then clean every possible source of contamination, and only then, we cook." Gus is proud of Jesse at that moment because that's exactly what he would say to his employees at Los Pollos Hermanos.
@pyropulse I doubt it. Jesse has cooked with Walt for like a year and a half. They have cooked every week together for a long period of time so Jesse kinda has developed that muscle memory required for a 90% + yield. I don't think that Cartel chemist would have instantly learned Heisenberg's techniques. It's not about knowledge its about experience.

"Any sophomore chemistry student can make it. What kind of amateur have you brought us?" Literally 10 seconds later... "How long is it gonna take you to get it?" "I don't know. I have no idea."
The head chemist's priorities were eschewed. He spent time synthesizing a basic component, which decreased costs by some amount, but increased time between batches. On the other hand, he didn't take the time to clean his lab, which lead to contamination and lower grade products, leading to a lower possible sales price and less profit. So his process delivered less quality and less rentability, and he was proud of these lower standards. In Gus's eyes, he was neither a businessman or a true professional, which is why he was proud of Jesse for calling him out.
@@KaiserAfini Absolutely. Synthesizing their own legal chemicals is a huge waste of time. A specialized lab is going to produce it much more efficiently and probably more purely than they can, so the cost savings can't possibly be enough to justify not buying it outright short of some sort of price gouging or unwanted government attention, neither of which had been a problem before that moment.
@@KaiserAfini Synthesizing and not cleaning before cooking was bound to lead to some impurities in the product. The head chemist was too stuck in his comfort zone and blinded by his ego to realize he could improve the way he makes things.

The scene shows how character development happens without even our noticing. Look at the state of Captain Cook's lab from Season 1 and now the same person talking of cleaning standards. Also proves the importance the episode "Fly"
This also indirectly justifies Gus killing Victor without directly saying it.... Gus was telling Jesse on the way "I believe in you " and placed his faith AND his life of a Junkie he tried to kill a few months earlier.... Victor didn't receive any mentorship and even if he copied Walt's cook step by step things like synthesing his own phenthastic acid AND the condition of their lab matters to the degrees.... Jesse cooked 96.2% which is 0.2% higher than Gale's guarantee with a unfamiliar environment.... If Victor cooked, the Cartel's cook would've alpha'd him, rattled him, he would've made mistakes not clean up the place and even then when they saw his cook.... It would've been so unpure, Victor Gus and Mike would've been killed instantly and buried in the desert

I always thought it was cool how Gus could keep a straight face but still show different emotions through his eyes, that’s when you know you are watching a professional actor
My favorite part about this scene and this arc with Jesse and Mike/Gus is how this dialogue is something we’d expect from Walt, but it comes from Jesse instead. It shows us how much potential Jesse had throughout the show and how much he could accomplish if he had people genuinely believe in him and support him. Mike and Gus saw the potential in Jesse and pushed him to bring it out; Walt suppressed Jesse’s potential out of fear that he’d be better than him, which Walt’s Ego and Pride couldn’t tolerate should it happen.
1 Gus would kill Jesse initially but Walt argued for Jesse to Gus. Walt believes and trustish Jesse and their bond grows keeping each other's back. The turn around is when Jesse becomes an replacement option for Walt,
@@fridaybot Yeah, is not like Gus believed in Jesse at all, he even wanted to leave him out of the business when he started working with Walter. It was the later who always insisted on bringing him in, which always generated tensions between Gus and Walt. Gus always rejected him until he saw Walter as the bigger threat, and literally just used Jesse as a tool against the Cartel. Let's also not forget he also manipulated Jesse to side with him, same as Walter did.
I love how this scene shows how far Jesse has come. He has so much more confidence, and self-respect than he did in season 1. Now he may not be great at chemistry, but he know how to make the Blue. He also knows that he needs a clean environment to work with. He takes pride in his work, and wants to make sure it's done right

@2:01 It looks like Gus has a mixture of both surprise and pride that Jesse is stepping up and making such a good impression. It’s also a testament to Esposito’s acting ability; the man can say so much with a simple facial expression and zero words.
@@seaofseeof I think pride was part of it. Remember that Gus said he "saw things in people" and was trying to groom Jesse to replace Walter. Seeing Jesse step up to the role Gus had been wanting him to would have filled him with some pride, just as a mentor is proud of his mentee.
Chemist: Any sophomore student can make it. Imnot having someone who cant make their own tell me my business. Chemist when asked how long it will take: I dont know, I have no idea
We all know that Gus was just using Jesse just like Walt, but i have the feeling that he had some kind of affection for him even if it was a little, in this scene he looks genuinely proud of Jesse
Both Gus and Mike had ulterior motives for Jesse but when they saw that he was actually trying to do the job they warmed to the idea of him being a permanent fixture of their operation
He told Walt from the start to "Never trust a drug addict" and before you know it, he's got Jesse running a lab of his own practically. He put a lot of faith in him, considering the way he normally runs his business.
mike trust gus but not walter white that is enough to say who would be a better leader. but for me, gus is as unstable as tuco. he is just more fair to those who are actually useful unlike tuco
Gus wasn’t kidding when he said he saw potential in Jesse. After taking a closer look he realized he was more than junkie and was in fact as much of an asset to him as Gael or Walter.
I was thinking the same thing. The moment Jesse started talking about how shit the lab is, followed up by Gus smiling, I immediately had a flashback to the Los Pollos Hermanos training video about cleanliness.
Except Jessie really learned that from Walt, not really Gus. That was a direct parallel, it was about working in a lab to make meth. In the episode fly Jessie even pointed out to Walt that people are aware food products are accepted as having small amounts of gross contaminations. But people don't care because if they're small enough people won't even know it, and it's out of sight out of mind. And it comes down to how much people like the food (he says he loves hot dogs).
one of the few times in the entire series where Jesse got to be on top of somebody else for a change. like, sure, Gus and Mike were still in charge and manipulating him here, but at least he got his moment to be the boss for once. feels so good to see.
I think part of it is that gus seems to have some form of ocd. Especially from some scenes in bcs. I think the reference to cleanliness is what cuts through his facade.
Guy: "We synthesize our own. Any Sophmore chemistry student can make it." Also Guy: "It'll take 6 hours at least to get it!" Wtf did you think, Jesse was going to synthesize the acid while all you jackasses stand around for 6 hours? That part didn't make any sense to me.

My most relatable scene is when Jesse says “I don’t do that, I get mine from the barrel with a bee in it” I felt that!!!! I can do it but don’t ask me to explain 🤣
What was really happening had little to do with actual knowledge of how to make the acid, it came down to who could win Gus's confidence. At the end of the day if I remember right the decision to have Jesse there still came down to Gus, so what Jesse whispered to Gus renewed Gus's confidence in him. The mexican chemist was just trying to instill doubt in Gus's choice so as to preserve as much control by his people as possible, but he failed to convince Gus. Literally 10 seconds later...
"How long is it gonna take you to get it?"

I would say it's very easy to notice that type of character development. Pretty darn obvious in facr

@@rc9749 no we don't lol
@@Autonomous15 Then say "Sorry." and go get us some Tim Horton's.
Gus spoke first to the scientist in Spanish and the conversation followed like that. If Gus asked in English then they probably would have conversed in English.
I love how Jesse held his own at the plant and you can see Gus was quite “proud of and surprised at” him. Like he saw something he didn’t expect and loved it totally
Gus invested in Jessie in over Walt previously because Gus knew Jessie was a capable chemist and headstrong. Here, he returns on Gus’s investment.
Who knows what Walt would have done in place of Jessie. The question being how he would mess it up, versus if he would mess it up
100% it would of been walts ego, if he was there his ego would have prevented him from doing the job @@PlaidHiker
Walt did tell him Jesse could be trusted on their first meet.
@@cannednolan8194 yea but to fair because jesse was high during the first visit, gus was already doubting walt, and his judgement, on top of gus not trusting druggies
even then I don't think walts word meant much, even if he had the best stuff in the business
@@redakdal agree but if you to Gus at this point Jesse would of already been dead. A few times.
“I speak English.”
“So then you know what ASSHOLE means.”
The way Jesse enunciates his words 😂
Now go get me my phenylacetic acid, ***hole.
Always liked how Jesse enunciates the word “cook”. 2:10 only then, we “cyook.”😂
"I get my phenylacetic acid from the barrel with the B on it." LMFAO
No, with the "bee", which is funnier lmao
Gotta be one of my favourite lines in the whole series.
Bee
Not B. Don't you remember the barrels with the bees?
@@thememaster7 I always thought those were the barrels of Methylamine at first.
My most relatable scene is when Jesse says “I don’t do that, I get mine from the barrel with a bee in it” I felt that!!!! I can do it but don’t ask me to explain 🤣
Why
@@ash_11117 Because they didn't pay attention in chemistry class and can't synthesize phenylacetic acid
Loved that part too
@@ViperOfMino No, its literally a bee on the barrel. Not the letter.
@@ViperOfMino watch the show, the barrels have a bee on them
"any sohphomore chemist can make Phenylacetic acid"
"How long does it take to make Pheynelacetic acid?"
"I have no idea"
No, he asked how long to get it there from a different source.
It's a recurring theme throughout the show. The technical details didn't matter so much.
@FBI
I think he said "I have no idea" because he didn't know what basic ingredients jesse knew and didn't know how to make.
@@joeking5679 nah Jesse was going to be a trade. Jesse would’ve simply been a pawn for Gus’ wrong doings with the cartel.
I do think this is one of the best scenes in the entire show. I searched specifically for it, thanks for uploading.
Oh Jesse you badass. He turned an "I am in deep shit" situation to a "YOU SHIT THE WAY I TELL YOU TO SHIT" situation like a king.
🤣
He learned from the best lmao
"I speak English."
*"So you understand what asshole means."* That part gives me chills. Walter had his moments, but Jesse was overall badass.
Edit: 2:29 Okay, that is far better than what I mentioned earlier. Moments like there are why Jesse is my favorite out of the two.
The part where he said stop whining was perfect
I love how Jesse didn't even feel embarrassed or awkward when he said he spoke English. He just had a confident comeback in response.
I too like Jesse...but the fact that whenever things got messed up..it was coz of him made me like Walt more
Jesse was a junkie screw up but he had his moments.
This scene showed how much Walter's influenced Jesse
I like how Jesse learned from the fly episode even though so many people said it was useless, he learned that something small like a fly could be catastrophic for the delicacy of the product
Yes and if any fly gets with the product then this news will circulate and no one will buy the product
so the real genius was walt
@@kblearner1528Also flies reproduce so fast
Good point. That's considered a "throw away" episode but it's actually important to the series and Walt's meticulous nature
@@kblearner1528 Weird take, no addict is gonna be able to tell that 0.00000000001% of a fly was in the bump they just took and it's not like the guys who made it are gonna broadcast the fact that a fly got in, they probably wouldn't even notice
I love that little smile Mike has as Jesse walks by him.
I love how Gus smiles at jesse when he talks about cleaning conditions
He is up to Pollos standards
“Good” -Gus’s Ocd
"Acceptable"
@@PlaidHiker”let the ocd flow through you!” 😂

@@PHATB0Y20 when you're an asshole that nobody likes
This running joke is getting stale. Its blue corundum btw.
When you receive a look like THAT from Gustavo Fring, you've officially won life
@Thomas Buchovecky I think it was entertaining for him to see someone troll the cartel one last time before he had them killed.
1:44 why tf would he not know how long it takes if they synthesise it for every cook?
I think he was just being mean tbh
1:57 I don't know if that expression is Gus being impressed by Jesse, or the warm feeling of Jesse indirectly saying that Gus' lab is as pristine as they come
I honestly wanna say both
It’s clearly a look of pride.
Both
It made me think of that scene in Better Call Saul when Gus has one of the Los Pollos workers clean the fryer like 3 times even though it's already clean.
But he actually got that from Walter, not gus.
what makes this scene very powerful is that Jesse just had a huge impactful fight with the very guy who taught him how to cook. You'd expect him to be anxious and insecure afterwards, especially at such transition of meeting the Cartel themselves. But oh boy he pulled a character of a ruthless badass !!
Yes he really followed the script word for word 😆
I think on some level he was tried of feeling disrespected so this his way of claiming respect
wait when did he teach jesse, it is walter only i thought. i forgot episodes
Gus is smiling because he sees he's right in knowing if he had been more confident with eladio, his partner may still be alive. He's realizing that his protege is actually going with the plans he had all along, giving him reinforcement to his endgame (killing the cartel)
2:21 "Im him"
“I’m the guy”
@WinstontheClown
"Stop saying you are the guy. We all know that you are not the guy."
