Retro Striped Text Effect Photoshop Tutorial (+FREE Textures)

- Over the years I’ve shared several tutorials showing how to create retro text effects mostly using Adobe Illustrator, so today I thought I’d mix things up and show some techniques for creating retro striped text effects with a 70s vibe using tools in Photoshop.
Photoshop’s Layer Style tools are the natural place to start, but as we’ll discover they don’t quite cut it. Instead, we’ll make use of the ‘Step and Repeat’ trick to generate an extended drop shadow effect that can then be divided up into coloured stripes.
This kind of retro text effect is ideal for creating T-shirt designs, so stick around until the end to see how my ‘Washed & Worn’ textures pack can easily make your artwork look like an old cracked T-shirt print.

I have watched, rewatched, watched again, continuously trying to get the final texture to work. the texture downloads come as jpeg, not png. My selections are reversed and poor. super frustrating at this point
What you'll need to do in this case is to make the texture layer transparent. Open it in a new document, double click on the layer in the layer stack to open up the layer styles box, then use the blend if slider to remove the white by alt/option clicking on the white slider and drag it all the way to the black side, then click done. Select all, then copy and paste into your text document and set it up as described in the video.

Have you tried changing the blending mode
I did what Dan The Man below suggested, but with a couple more steps (if you're starting with a jpeg file): 1) right click the texture file and open in Illustrator 2) File > Export > Export As... > Format: PNG with Transparency box checked 3) Open the new PNG file in Photoshop (should come in as a "Layer 1") 4) Double click on the layer in the layer stack to open up the layer styles box, then use the "Blend If:" slider to REDUCE the white by dragging it towards the black side (I set my Current Layer white to about 189), then click Ok. 5) Save the file and CLOSE it 6) Reopen the PNG in Photoshop, then right click the layer and select Duplicate Layer and set your destination document as your "SURF" file. Click Ok. 7) The layer should now be in your "SURF" file. Continue following the video to set your knockout to Shallow and Fill to 0%.

I don't know what the issue is for me, but I had to do 7 pixels for the stroke, 60 copies, and 2 degrees of rotation to get similar results. Any variable that had a number value, I had to do differently than this video to get the same result.
I only had to do 22 copies, otherwise it was massive!
I downloaded the textures, just very confused at how to use. There are multiple on a page, it uploads the entire thing and lags when I put on my image

You give instructions for a changeable text version near the end of the video, but once you've created the style, how do you actually change the text without going through the whole process from scratch?
