The first Dark Souls 1 video, the last Dark Souls 2 video, and the first Dark Souls 3 video are actually the opening cinematics when you start the game. That is why they are all lore and nothing about your role.

Each game can behave as stand alone story, but they all share a timeline where you get the most of the lore and story in order. Each game the player character is something of the same, but a little different. In 1 you are the chosen undead, in 2 you are the cursed undead, in 3 you are the unkindled ash. It all started with the First Flame of Dark Souls 1, where souls came from. Your resting means is always a bonfire. While humanity strives to be with the holy and Light, their inherent nature is Dark beyond its comprehension. Every character has their own motives and goals, and even a different understanding.

The games dont tell you much of the story you could finish any Dark Souls Game or even Elden Ring and Bloodborne and dont understand the story.
You have to read every detail on the items you find trough the game and those items tell the real story, atleast you would understand it^^

The souls games try to be as immersive as possible. Because of this you basically know what your character know, a random undead or guy tht was resurrected wouldn't know much about anything around him,. Most of the lore is found by speaking to people and reading things in game.
Also people say that elden ring is easier, i don't necessarily agree. It is easier overall as a game because it gives you many options to get stronger and you can go wherever you want since it's an open world. In Dark Souls you can't progress if you don't kill a boss. I still think the bosses in elden ring are harder

Seeth the Scale-less is actually aVERY old Fromsoft series called "Kingsfield" IIRC, he was the final boss, and also gave you the Moonlight sword. (I may be wrong on what point it is) The Moonlight Sword is a magical sword that has been in every single FROM soft game since it was first used, (Even the Armored Core series has it.)

A decent way to approach many of From Software's games would be to say that the developers make worlds instead of games. It's not a better or worse kind of equation and I'll explain a little better to avoid sounding cavalier.
When playing a game, you primarily act as the main character (or characters). There are big events happening and the stars are aligning, promising mighty adventures that can only happen now. If you stand around or get lost, the game events can sweep you up. The story is actively happening, and if the player doesn't move quickly enough, that player may fail. Gods, powers, or narrators may have foretold the player's arrival and actions.
When entering many worlds built by From Software, it is Tuesday. Same as it was a week before. Big things have happened, or might even happen during the adventure, but if your character stands around, then generally it will turn into Wednesday, then Thursday, and so on until another Tuesday arrives. The story is powered by your actions and events happen in response to your controls (whether or not forewarning was given). Gods, powers, or narrators may enter into it, and characters will definitely give you information or ask you to do things, but maybe don't be so quick to trust them. This brings up another point.
When playing a game, the information you receive will generally be pretty straightforward. Players will be mostly told what the options are and what the goals are. Outside of a few major story points where the writers get sneaky and try to pull a Plot Twist! [Trademark patent pending j/k] everything is mostly truthful. It's not a bad plan to try and avoid players feeling frustration with unclear goals and uncertain information. It really helps players to know the boulder is rolling down the mountain so they can avoid it. In general, game designers wants to be on the same team as the players, and any competition is just within the gameplay. There may even be controls for the level of difficulty.
When entering many worlds by From Software, there will generally be an introductory cinematic. A game may show clips of events that happened, and of course everyone sees the same intro, but not every player ends up with the same conclusions. A game may start with artwork, statues, poems, or fragments of recorded history instead of showing pieces of the actual events. Did those artists, sculptors, and historians record things accurately, or did they change the details to promote the story they wanted remembered? The player may have to work hard to figure that out. Other characters in the game may provide information freely, or you may have to work to get information out of people or find artifacts lying around. Whether freely given or found with much effort, the information might be helpful and accurate, or it might tell you there's a hidden chest ahead, just down a slight drop... and it turns out you've fallen off a cliff to another death with no amazing chest. Sometimes a treasure chest might actually try to eat you. Players can even run around and ignoring almost all information until there are suddenly End Credits. These game designers may not consider you on the same team, after all, you didn't show up to the meetings like they did. You certainly didn't bring coffee or snacks. Why bother telling the players about the boulder rolling down the mountain? After all, it's their choice to come to that mountain. Not every player does, and they certainly didn't have to. It can really frustrate players to be told about rolling boulders when there's no guarantee they will event want to visit the mountains: the beaches are really nice after all. Sometimes game designers make a game the best they know how, and understand that not everyone will like it. At the end of the day they want to look at it and see if they feel they did a good job, and realize that trying to make a game that everyone likes is a good recipe for making bad games. A game designer that learns to evaluate their own work doesn't have to worry so much about the fickle responses from different fans, especially the ones that try to communicate through that twisted, massacre horrorscape some call the internet. From Software don't have the control to change the difficulty of the internet, and they don't bother with difficulty controls in their worlds.
Some games are just multiplayer festivals of fighting. Some games have stories. If a game is single-player with a story then the character is almost always the focal point. In general, there is only the one character or group of characters. There is one history, and it will tell of your character's Epic Success or Complete Failure. Generally, no one else enters into it. The game exists for the player.
Sometimes game designers don't create a game. They make a world instead. Lots of players can be given access to that world. Players can even choose not to play, but the world will still be there. Tuesdays will keep happening. If a player gets involved, they may even see shadows of other players or echoes of others' actions. Perhaps you'll hear bells when big monsters are beaten somewhere else. Characters in that world may even comment about all the characters they see that have come to visit. They might talk about how most give up or go insane. A world like Bloodborne even has lines that are aimed at the player and not the character being controlled. There's even an ending where it's commented that the character continues on, but the player isn't in control of them any more: maybe the character has another story that the player doesn't get to see. There might be three different characters in the game ready to tell the player how to Win Everything! [Trademark patent still pending review], but none of the three characters agree on anything. They can't all be right.
I recommend Elden Ring as the best game to start with. It is a love letter to fans, both new and old. If you run into part of the world you don't enjoy at that moment, then there are completely different places and experiences to explore. You can come back later with a bigger hammer. People may talk about the right way to play, but those are ingenuous comments. It takes a lot of work and meetings to put anything into a game and nothing was accidentally picked: everything in the game was put there intentionally.
Anyway, with this information I believe I have successfully proven my point that people online can be truly insufferable, and the explanation certainly isn't the same as understanding. My work here is done... and if it isn't, then it should be.

Dark Souls, unlike Elden Ring, has deep metaphorical counterpart to the story, it is really complicated to understand, Elden Ring is more "conventional".
The Age of Fire is the age of the gods. Mankind doesn't come from the souls of light that the gods found, but of the one Dark Soul that the Furtive Pigmy found.
The fire of this age will one day fade, and the Age of Dark will be set in place, the age of humanity.
That was until Gwyn commited the first Sin. Honestly, the first Sin is a bit complicated to understand by me, so i cannot really explaim what happened.
