I've been blessed to have owned a 1997 Subaru Impreza GT 4WD (GC8) which was basically WRX before they widely used the branding. It was absolutely brilliant car and gave me a smile every time I sat behind the wheel. Had it for about a decade and was lucky not to have too many issues with it until the very end when one thing after another went wrong. Had roughly 300.000 km on the counter. Still miss it to this day.
Just got an 04 Impreza RS sedan with a 5 speed manual, EJ251 N/A. I am overjoyed by the enthusiasm of people who own them, I have never driven one, my need a rebuild, I’m excited for the process. Thanks for all the sound counsel ….good and bad, excellent content.

I still wish that I didnt sell my 2004 wrx wagon for $8,000 4 years ago. It only had 50,000 km on it, sti wheels, turbo back exhaust, cobb ecu flash and a short shifter. I miss it.
I grabbed a 2011 STI sedan about 9 months ago and love it! Once I improve upon the bad upgrades the previous owner(s) have done it will be even better!
As the owner of a 2018 limited STI all I can say is if you've ever wanted a WRX, or STI and can afford one please get one. The driving experience is unlike anything else even when you're just casually driving it's pure joy. I pray I never have to get rid of it
Ignore everyone that says to leave it stock.. i left my 2019 stock from brand new to 76k miles. changed and checked oil religiously. never beat or babied. still managed to melt the exhaust valves. its getting rebuilt now. do yourself a favor and get it tuned. etune if you cant get it dyno/pro tuned. the car is fueled way too lean from the factory. then get an AOS and an IAG oil pan. oil pickup, and windage tray. and finally, engine 4 cooling mod.
It's a nice change hearing so many positives about Subaru, every day all I ever read/hear is how bad or unreliable they are and usually from people that have never owned one. They're an amazing car just look after them like anything in life.
Interesting you didn't mention the legacy rally heritage and how it moved to the smaller platform of the impreza. But any good enthusiast would know know this.
i got into the WRX since the production of the Spec-C/RA-R. though most people get hyped with the rally harritage, i got the car for it's time on the Nurb.!
They have been growing on me big time and the OEM+ upgrades are the best upgrades to do for it the channel --> Smeedia has some very good detailed smart upgrades for the VB platform.
You guys could've totally worded this to shed a better light. headgasket issues are not prevalent on the 2008+ WRX and STI. That primarily relates to the older cars as the gaskets have a specific coating that causes it to fail. Also yes, under a modded application you can lift a gasket but you can do the same in a honda, nissan, etc. this isn't an issue specific to subaru. These cars require smart owners and not people who look at these cars as just cars. did you know that in the 15+ STI specifically there is a cam phaser issue? throws P0018-P0019. $4000 fix. It's fairly common in this gen STI. From factory the magnet that helps engage the cam is the wrong size and allows carbon to build up causing a failure. ECU pulls timing to save the engine but it's such a radical change that the ECU sticks and needs to be replaced as well. Should also let people know that in 2015 the WRX and STI split into two different platforms. The STI with the EJ257 and that THICCC transmission, and the WRX with the FA20 and the infamous "glass" transmission. Also the STI has a much better suspension, brakes, other than the body the WRX and STI after 2014 were two completely different cars. I'm the proud owner of a 2017 STI. Original owner. It blows my mind all these new people getting into subarus thinking they can mod it like a honda, then i see videos like this that dedicate a 3rd of their video to talking about just mods and not really saying anything....useful..to new owners. DO PROPER RESEARCH people. get away from videos like this. if you want a WRX or an STi. you need to watch every video from the subaru community and test drive multiple versions of both cars. Be smart. Don't do engine mods without a tune. DO NOT DO LARGE MODS LIKE TURBO SWAPS WITHOUT SUPPORTING MODS LIKE INJECTORS AND DO NOT DO ALL THAT WITHOUT A TUNE. Be smart, Be ready to pay alot of money to shops that SPECIALIZE in WRXs and STIs. But take into consideration there's a large, helpful community, and shops with 20+ years experience that know these cars inside and out and are more than willing to help you understand. All this said, my STI is the best daily i've ever owned. Lightly modded at about 308 to the wheels. i eat 98% of cars on the road, i handle Ohio potholes at 120, i love ripping up backroads
They are a hoot to drive...!!! Great sound from the flat four and off the line go acceleration, coupled with great handling and a fantastic driving position makes for car of the decade.
Get it mechanically checked! Compression test is a must. Yes they are awesome, but don't get suckered in then have to pay thousands of dollars for problems that creep up. Most of these have been beat on. But yes, they are awesome.
I will take delivery of my 5th a new 2024 Subaru WRX Premium CVT Sport next week. They are a wonderful and reliable drivers car for the price, and driven with respect 👍 Au
Personally speaking ....loving my 2023 WRX top-spec 6 speed manual. It's fun, fast, tossable, useful, very playful, with lots of flat linear power, poor fuel economy and stiff suspension. Far better tuned than the last generation 2.0 DIT, the engine is quite smooth, very flat and very responsive. It's not my daily driver but more of a weekend runabout and toy so the "issues" of it's poor fuel economy and unforgiving firm suspension on poor roads is really not an issue. It's not the car I would be going on a 9hr road trip to the Maritimes with, but its really fun on the country roads with tonnes of grip and tonnes of low and mid range punch.
2L engines in GC8s Bug and Blob eyes don't have many issues with head gaskets. It's 2.5s which came in around 2006 onwards. This is because it's just the same block bored out but with no added reinforcement, so they're just weaker and more prone to issues (especially N/As)
I learned pretty quick cars don't run on hopes and dreams. Bought my first WRX a few months ago with all kinds of aftermarket goodies. I've essentially had to become a mechanic to understand whats happening under the hood so i can make informed choices. I live in a small town where ford and gm reign- I took it to a shop here to get my starter changed. The guy opened the hood, looked at me and said, "I'll sell you one but you're gonna take it out right?".
@@DoubleAgent25 Same here brother I feel you, I'm in rural NC where people have trucks and side by sides. The nearest turbo shop is 3 hours away so I'm by myself figuring out everything. It's also incredibly unreliable, at least compared to my previous cars all of which were toyota/Lexus. My trans was 25k miles old when I bought the car and about 2 weeks into me owning it, it went out. So I spent 7k to get it replaced, well 36 miles later my rear diff seized and caused both rear axles and the driveshaft to break. Found out it was because shops don't replace your transmission mounts when you get them replaced. "It's not common for those to fail, so no shop replaces them unless specifically told to by the customer" After I did research I found that this statement I was told by the shop manager is true. They don't replace a $15 part even though I spent 7k. I wish you the best of luck with yours! hopefully you don't have as bad of an experience as I've been having.
I'd like to point out that one of the causes of a warped headgasket can also come from cylinder 4 overheating, which is due to only one line of coolant on the driver side of the engine, while the passenger side of the engine has two. You can easily add that coolant line for cylinder 4 and that'll save you from the overheating. Won't save you from the previous owner beating the absolute shit out of their car though.
Own a 99 GC8 WRX, not looking at anything else..... love the look on faces when ive blown away bikes off the mark at traffic lights.... never fails to amuse 😂❤😂
My 07 wrx is my 4th thanks to having to sell my others weather through geting out of the AF or getting divorced she is my favorite by far and is an absolute reflection of me and what I feel. Oddly enough now my wife is a subie lover and has her dream car as well(2019 ascent) for family travel with dog and just like me she had and got it in black. Love what you can wjile you can
the only catch is the older model needs to take care of their head gasket leak every now and then, newer model and older model both need to fix the oil starvation problem(oil sloshing), but newer model dont have any fix yet.
Actually, serious head gasket issues only existed in the ej251 and early ej253 engines, not the turbo models’ engines. People believe that theyll buy a subaru and immediately blow a head gasket. It wont. Its not a built rally car, its a production car. Just don’t drive it like a 22b and your head gaskets will be fine.
As an owner of a 2018 WRX and now a 2020 sti, Subarus stock suspension SUCKS on any dirt or uneven roads. Super firm, no forgiveness, bumpy and loud. Great on a pavement mountain road though. With that being said, do your research before buying, and plan to upgrade suspension wise as needed if you plan to daily it. Do yourself a favor and keep the engine stock if you don’t have the money to an aftermarket engine set up.
Any subie before 2015 has a "head gasket "issue"", but like everyone says; Subarus want to be wined and dined, not treated like a piece of garbage, take car of it and it will take care of you.
They fixed their head gasket issue My switching to a multi-layer head gasket years ago so I kind of feel like that's an outdated issue at this point it kind of comes down to driver or just sheer bad luck. Also the VAWRX does not have a linear power curve. But really the issue is throwing mods on the car and beating on it without a tune or an improper tune The engine just don't respond to poor care very well
One of my many dream machines. I hate Ford cars but the old Escort rally cars are gangster as well as the 90's Toyota Celica All-Trac....would love to have one. I own a 2021 WRX base. I agree with how the suspension sucks...feels like a Marine Corps 5-ton...I want some Bilsteins...I just hope the FA 20 lasts longer than my 2012 WRX hatch did...That ej255 was puking oil all over the place...90,000 miles and she died. Never ever beat on it and changed the oil every 3000 miles. Ashame....cheaper to sign up for payments on a new one than to fix it...
2 or 3 new sti's next door. Just reinforce my love for evo 😅. Maybe I'll get lucky wife let me get 2015 one day before all the manuals are 😅over 100k miles
Just set aside $5k for a new motor and it’s a great car. And maybe $2k for the trans as it’s made out of glass. Wouldn’t recommend buying one unless it’s a 1 owner. I left the platform thankfully before any of these issues arose.
I had a 2003 bugeye. For 15 years. It was awesome. I had always wanted an STI. So when I was looking for an STI I drove a 2018 wrx. It sucked. Didn’t feel like my ej20 wrx. I drove a 2018 STI. Didn’t like that either. I drove an evo x. It felt more like my 2003 wrx than any of the newer Subarus. So after 15 years of being a Subaru guy. I’m now an EVO guy. I have 2015 evo x. It’s awesome. Subaru lost its way after the 2002-2007 wrx/STI. They got soft and boring.
Cheap WRX? Maybe a wrx rebuilt car with 200k miles, that isn’t a STI. Or one that’s half dead from a previous owner. A one owner 04-06 STI with under 100k miles, zero crash reports, and in good condition is nearly unobtainable now, and will command the price of 2 used last generation sti cars now. That’s a rare thing to find now for sure. And the same year 04-06 STI, multi owner, beat up with high mileage commands it’s new price nearlynow. But hey, that generation is a great investment car, as it’s probably the next GTO Judge or Copo Camaro to todays generation in their 30s/40s. So hold onto this model if you got one, you can only make good money at this point if you hold onto it.
I’ve always wanted one until i started to really understand more about engines and how they work. I almost bought one over my st and I’m still happy with my purchase.
I am looking for some advice if anyone can provide. I found a good deal on a 2002 WRX. It is auto which I know sucks to a lot but I don't mind it too much. It has about 110k miles. Car looks good. Needs a bit of love but looks good.
Yes, engines designed to fail to gravity. Solid daily. Fantastic enthusiast vehicle. 😂😂😂 Its not like boxers got phased out in racing for the mechanical limitations. Please. Buy one. Stay away from quality platforms, kids.
You put a picture of the wrx as the thumbnail for ur cars to avoid or cars that you shouldnt buy videos but then make a video saying you should buy one (i love subarus dont get me wrong but just kinda confusing what idealmedia doing tbh dont take anything of this comment tho just imo)
They're fun but definitely not as fun as your making them out to be be prepared to spend 7k+ if you wanna make 400+ hp and actually make the car come alive.
@scottbeauchene8868 I'm going off people that would have a healthy stock block a decent turbo and header and up pipe with fuel lines, fpr, 1050x injectors down pipe of your choosing and fuel pump you could easily make 400 on a budget I spent close to 15k with a stock block with forged bearings, rods, pistons, and stock crank shaft with fp green with 1050x injectors lines, fpr, pump and killer b holy header, I made just under 400.

the only catch is the older model needs to take care of their head gasket leak every now and then, newer model and older model both need to fix the oil starvation problem(oil sloshing), but newer model dont have any fix yet.
love my 04 wrx. I enjoyed them so much I got my dream 2013 hatchback and its amazing.
I sure miss the Impresa WRX STi Coupe (2 Door) model...
I own a coupe and it's a truly phenomenal experience
Just got a 2011 WRX.. love it.
Any subie before 2015 has a "head gasket "issue"", but like everyone says; Subarus want to be wined and dined, not treated like a piece of garbage, take car of it and it will take care of you.
i drive a 02 wrx and i love that thing sooo sooo much
keeping my sti va and almost there to get an sti blobeye. price is shooting up so fast!!
Big enthusiast. ‘09 spec b for summer and ‘06 fxt for winter
Curious where you’re finding one for 10k? All the WRXs I’m seeing are 15+
They fixed their head gasket issue My switching to a multi-layer head gasket years ago so I kind of feel like that's an outdated issue at this point it kind of comes down to driver or just sheer bad luck. Also the VAWRX does not have a linear power curve. But really the issue is throwing mods on the car and beating on it without a tune or an improper tune The engine just don't respond to poor care very well
Ford Escort RS Cosworth in the earlier days. The Cossie could blitz the Focus RS
I had a chance 26 years ago to purchase one.... been kicking myself ever since... lawl 😂😂
Be smart and invest in a N/A first generation Impreza. This car will be with you for eternity.
Should've got a STI with ej207 and the Subaru 6 speed is absolutely bulletproof
I sold my 2007 STI 11 years ago for $17,000. The only time I’ll ever buy another Subaru is if it’s a 1998 22B STI
I have a 2004 WRX I just bought !
(It’s a manual)
its the best all around car fs
Y'all forgot about the All Trac Celica 😞😞.... unobtaniam but I still would love to have a WRX STI
I love my Bugeye WRX.
Sick vid bro!
I always love Impreza...two door versions..b22 ..r22..not sure the code name...all time favourite
The newest WRX is the most mod friendly one yet; grab them while you can folks!
six star gaskets are the best as well they warranty them
Miss the Evo fight!
I’ve always wanted one until i started to really understand more about engines and how they work. I almost bought one over my st and I’m still happy with my purchase.
I'll take the Evo 6 RS
Do you think getting a new 2023 WRX a good idea for rally racing?
It could be if you're willing to invest in the necessary modifications. The fifth generation has more towards comfort and street driving.
i don't need WRX, i have Legacy TT wagon, fast with ton of space behind the seats producing 316hp stock (:
Hey @IdealMedia can you please make a video on the 2nd gen ford escape like the years 2008 to 2012 and explain why it’s a good first car!!???
I love/hate my wrx ❤😂
Honestly will only pull out the WRX for car shows ig 😅😅😅
Love the 22b my dream subie a 2.2 closed deck subie moter with a 5 speed sick rhd
DAM OKAY
I am looking for some advice if anyone can provide. I found a good deal on a 2002 WRX. It is auto which I know sucks to a lot but I don't mind it too much. It has about 110k miles. Car looks good. Needs a bit of love but looks good.
This might help ya out :) bit.ly/FREEICSWORKSHOP
Can you guys do the 10th generation Civic Si
“Cheap” dude the bluebook for that one is $12k
Ur about to make a bunch of tow truck drivers a ton of money
Yes, engines designed to fail to gravity. Solid daily. Fantastic enthusiast vehicle. 😂😂😂 Its not like boxers got phased out in racing for the mechanical limitations. Please. Buy one. Stay away from quality platforms, kids.
You put a picture of the wrx as the thumbnail for ur cars to avoid or cars that you shouldnt buy videos but then make a video saying you should buy one
(i love subarus dont get me wrong but just kinda confusing what idealmedia doing tbh dont take anything of this comment tho just imo)
Yeah, I watched the video because of the thumbnail, and he is recommending 2nd gen.
Love my vb.😊
The VBs got too much hate for their looks lol. I love them, but that huge touchscreen and fenders were holding me back for a second lol
@@DJSimmons people always hate on the new looks, but as always.. give it time
I want one 😢
Awesome
Can I get the link to a cheap sale for this car
Im about to go hit some back roads in my 22 6 speed❤😊
@scottbeauchene8868 on 93 with obviously supporting mods like koyorad and cylinder 4 cooling mod.
Im selling a fully built wrx hatchback making 438whp on e85 in the central california area if anyones interested
"Like no other?" The Lancer Evo, hold my beer!
Exactly
555 likes, only thing preventing me from hitting the like button
why buy just a wrx, when you can buy a vrc
