This is why i love youtube and the people who take the time to share their wealth of knowledge here.
My house was built in 1892 and i have lived here 20 years. As I'm learning about wild edibles, i have to wonder if the large patch of mullein that i've always just mowed down was cultivated on purpose many years ago. Fascinating to think about and, either way, I'll not mow it down any more. Thank you for the information :)

I love mullein! I use the blossoms, leaves and root. I make a tea, sometimes adding Dandelion, but always use honey as it's a natural antibiotic. This is nature's mucinex and helps so many issues. We made it thru 2 rounds of the dreaded virus ( yes that man made one) with this. It has lung healing properties.

@@khm2128 i found those plants last fall, and as i remember - googled about the plant and found about it needs two , or three years to flower. before it, it grows as some weird looking leaves on the ground, which they claim was earlier (than toiletpaper) used as as to wipe your , not mouth hole.
and i found the leaves growing in the same area, so i transplanted it to a friends garden, in the shadow from the northern sun behind a small plank(raised garden), and now it seems to begin to flower. actually i have removed the plank just today, so we will see how it gets. but i will get some compost to it too, i think.
in sweden they are called "kungsljus" (translated to english would be like "the licht of the king").. and it seems to be illegal to fish with them in this country, which might say something.
as for cough syrap, i think honey would do better than sugar. not the least because it says in the holy bible like, "eat honey, My son, because its good"

@@jesuschristislordoflordsan427 The seeds in the flowers have been historically used to stun fish. The seeds have a soapy substance called saponins which are not poisonous but relatively toxic.
The plant usually flowers in the second year, although i've had some do it the first year.
The Swedish name, I would guess, is because the flowering stalks, after they've gone to seed, can be dipped in candle wax to be burned.
The leaves are soft in the first year, which is the toilet paper reference. It is too risky to get the itchy hairs in the wrong places, in my opinion.
The leaves, flexible stalks (not when old and woody) and the woody root can be used to make a decoction. This can be used to fortify the lubrication in the joints & to fortify the trigone muscle (responsible for urge to urinate). Regarding strengthening the trigone, squats should be done also, to strengthen the pelvic floor.
The leaves can be heated (in a dry skillet or maybe in the microwave) to make them steamy. Then they can be applied to sore feet. This is especially effective for plantar fascitis.

The sugar is necessary to EXTRACT the medicinal properties within the mullein. I'm not sure honey would have the same effect with extracting the medicine from the mullein. People are thinking the sugar is to better the taste but that's not so, it's necessary to get the medicine out of the plant because it's making the plant "sweat" out.
For everybody not wanting to do that, I would suggest you simply take the flowers and leaves and make a tea out of the mullein and add honey or whatever you want to add. The tea works just as well as the syrup, but the problem is having to constantly make new tea or storing dried mullein leaves for when you need them. The syrup just increases the shelf life of the plant and can use it without going through a process of making tea.
    Jesus bless you all 😊

But personally I would use glycerin over anything with sugar since this is for when the immune system needs help you don't want the extreme immune suppressing effects of anything with sugar. All it takes is 10 grams to cut your immune function in half. Let that sink in.

I'm suffering from a terrible cough right now and I wish I had prepared something like this in the summer! Will definitely be making this recipe even if only as a culinary syrup.
I notice a few people mention they'd rather prepare the recipe with honey over white sugar; I think the reason white sugar is used is because it is dry and as such yields a greater osmotic pressure to extract the fluid from the petals. Also, less moisture in the final formula means it has a longer shelf life.

I would personally not even use either but glycerin instead. It's been shown it only takes about 10 grams of sugar to lower key factors of the immune system by 50%! Sugar has an extremely powerful immune suppressant effect on the body and the last thing you want to take when ever sick. Extremely important information to remember with what foods you eat. Think broth, or chicken noodle soup not nice pudding. No sugar, low simple carbs.

Actually, yes it would. The most common liquor used is probably vodka, but lots of folks use whiskey just 'cuz they prefer the taste. I use peppermint schnapps, actually, and I try to use the highest proof I can find/afford. Mullein is an expectorant, though, I think, while the liquor would be a cough suppressant, so adjust your ratios based on what you need most.

Been reading a lot about the properties of Mullein. Have dried leaves for making tea and didn't know about the blossoms. The weeks long preparation for this can be a little daunting if you need something sooner. In that case, slice up an onion and cover it with sugar and let it sit for a couple days. Not sure how it compares. Medicinally, but it should do in a pinch. Also, does anyone know what the shelf life for natural Mullein syrup is?

Have you tried substituting the white (processed sugar) for coconut or cane sugar? Also macerating the mixture daily, once it's on the windowsill aids in extracting the full benefits from the flowers into the sugar, along with preventing the sugar from crystallizing. I also add some non-pasteurized local honey into my syrup. Just my 2 cents, since I don't believe white sugar to be beneficial. Thank you for your vid.

I gathered some of the mullin blossoms and layered them with granulated sugar just like you showed in your video. The bottom center blooms kept most of their yellow like color. The other blossoms took on a sorta off tan or beige color. I at first thought it was mold that had started on the blossoms however it never grew into anything. I have kept the blossoms and sugar sitting for about 5 or 6 weeks now and still only about 65% of the sugar has dissolved. I was wondering if any of your blossoms took on this off light tan or somewhat light gray to beige color. Also, do you think they are still good and I will be able to drain the syrup and still be able to use it. I did everything just as you showed in your video and this occurred. Perhaps it really does not harm the resulting cough syrup. Please advise me on what you feel I should do and also if I will be able to use the melted syrup I now have. Thanks for your answer.......

Also, in central Colorado, the Mullein plants grow tall but only have one flowery stem rising from the middle covered with very tiny flowers/pedals (smaller than a pencil eraser). im no expert but keeping things airtight and kept away from the sun, and cold (like 10degrees celcius or whatever that is found in the ground after just a meter or so) would probably be good enough for years. or at least two seasons.
also, i think you can cook it a little of time in the jar in water, with lid open, and then after just close the lid. afaik, to make some less density of air in the stored bottle.,
