Yeah, the more maps you do the worse it gets too, I have a ton of zones set up for different farming/atlas trees (Exp farming, rarity farming, certain league mechanics etc.) and finding them when I want to go do them is an absolute pain.
There is something that could proof your theory. Yesterday I had an area in the north where all my nodes ended in a deadend. But I could see that there was no water or mountain in the fog that would stop my progress in that direction. After I used a tablet on the nearest tower to that area the game generated new paths (lines) from my deadends into the foggy area. That indicated to me that the game is generating stuff in the fog on the fly. I recognized that you can "spot" citadels depending on monster types in your maps (waystones). If you run a swamp, for example, but the skeleton dudes with a shield that reflect projectiles appear in that map (where they don't belong because swap is act 3 and they are act 1 mobs) the "Iron Citadel" (Count Act 1) is nearby. Something else has changed since then. For weeks towers looked kinda normal, you could see which ones I hadn't done and which ones are cleared, but visually nothing beyond that. Now, some of my towers got a huge flame on the top.
Great input, I'll check into the monster variety more to see if I see the same thing. I've noticed the tower thing too but my early assumption was that it was just because of elevation changes in the fog. For instance I went to see one that stuck out more and it was just on a mountain peak, but I will be on the lookout for the flame you are talking about.
@@BehindEyesGamingPOE It's weird. I got a few hundred hours by now and had never seen the huge flame coming out of the top of a tower until yesterday, now, when I wanted to record it so you could see what I am talking about - it's gone. I had 3 towers close to each other and all had a flame coming out of the golden top. The flame was half the size of the tower, so really easy to see. Should I encounter it again I try to record it and figure out why it appeared.
So I decided to test this theory tonight and just started clearing towards the nearest corrupted tower. When I cleared it another corrupted tower was revealed nearby, so I cleared to that one next, while also clearing the corrupted maps along the way. Each corrupted tower revealed at least one other nearby corrupted tower, either directly visible or in the fog. (You can spot the tentacles on them) By following this path I was able to find 2 citadels tonight in a few hours of gameplay, ~30 maps cleared in total along the way. This is a small sample size but you very well may be on to something. Hopefully more people will try this technique out so we can test it further.
Great contribution, I'm currently working on a follow-up because with the help of comments I was able to refine the process even more. I spawned a ton of citadels yesterday
I thought that too but they seem to be working both in the hideout and ziggurat for me the same way, I'll double check but there doesn't seem to be a difference from what I've noticed though.
On one hand, since the atlas is "infinite" and generated procedurally from a seed, I'm thinking that it's just luck and I kinda doubt that the current state of the neighboring tiles (corruption vs no corruption) affects the generation... But on the other hand, it's not impossible at all, so I'm interested in what people find out about that.
I thought it was luck at first but it kept working. Still might be, so I will test more and encourage others to do so as well. Hopefully it does work though, it would ease the pain of people spending a whole day digging for 1 citadel haha
Definitely seed but with certain conditions included, just like lost tower, the map is seeded but the stairs is always the furthest. Just the same case here
Hmm I just spotted a corrupted tower for the first time, so tomorrow I will try and clear it and all the nearby corruption -- to see what happens and if a screen or two away anything happens.

Should just be anywhere into the fog about 2 screens out. The reason I chose diagonal for this demonstration is because I had already tried straight up. I explain a bit later in the video but more or less I think you just check a flag when you clear the corruption and the next area generated (about 2 screens from any edge) will just contain one
It was mostly because of the way the landscape seemed to be pointing that made me predict that direction. I've figured more stuff out though so I think I can pick the direction even better now
Have you paid any attention to the dead bodies at the top of each tower? They seem arranged like a compass, as though they're pointing to specific directions. I'm testing that theory, as well as your corruption-clearing theory

PoE is a seed based game, If you and me get same seed, we will have exactly the same atlas, Some activities have large seed pool than others, for example ritual at some point had a relatively small seed pool, as a result people were able to get exactly the same items, like 4 stat abyss jewels with exactly same name, affixes and affix rolls. As for citadel spawn, I'm sure there is a way to 'detect' them from a far, like tower placement/corruption trails or something else should lead you to the citadel. The map generation can both be dependent on your actions and also have a seed. The seed is simply used to feed into random parts of the generation, and if there needs to be non-random parts, it can modified after generation in order to facilitate scripted events as you suggest. Just think of the map generation in the campaign. It is random, because you will not find monsters and terrain in the same place/shapes, but you also definitely find things they pre-programmed for you to find there. As to specifically what system poe2 uses to decide what to put where, I couldn't tell you, but it's definitely possible to have fixed points-of-interests even in randomly generated content.
