- The cold-open start to the first-ever official Game Developer's Conference concert, performed live on March 20, 2024 for an audience of around 3,000! This was a life and career highlight!
What games WOULD have picked to represent in this opening montage?
Big love to my collaborator on this arrangement, Brian LaGuardia.

What a selection! And the transitions are SO SMOOTH - Assassin's Creed into Divinity Original Sin and Journey into Ori were fucking *INSPIRED*.
Amazing work by all!

One big nerdy stream of conscience!! :) Thank you so much for the kind words!
"How many themes?"
Austin: "Yes".
Austin got his time signatures and song to time ratios mixed up, but what a flex at absolutely crushing 559/5:59.
Game composers appreciating eachother is what we need
This was so well-done!
Loved the crowd's cheer and your smile when Journey popped up lol
This sounded great! It's notably impressive how many themes you crammed in just 6 minutes! 😂👏And it was an honor to get to play the piano parts for this. Thank you! 💙☺
You were amazing!! Looking forward to more in the future!
@@awintory thank you! Yes, definitely!
What a fantastic medley! You did a great job at representing the diversity of video game scores and how they've shaped one another over time. Would have loved to see some Dark Souls in there, but with how many games you were cramming in you really knocked it out of the park! I was really happy when I heard Journey especially, your work is some of my favorite in the industry and definitely belongs up there with the greats. And ending with Zelda, that was fantastic. I don't know if there's another franchise that comes close to the musical impact of Zelda. I only wish I could have been there in person!
Nascence into blind forest into aerith had my jaw hanging open! When the key shifted for the undertale song I thought delphinus delphis was next
This made my heart happy. Loved seeing the crack of a smile when the audience applauded for Journey, too! The only unfortunate byproduct was that I wish there was more medleys like this. The transition from Mass Effect to Halo to Horizon to Journey to Ori to FF7 was perfect.
Assassins into Divinity was fucking sweet.
Maestro, you have a quite good taste!
Some of my favorite moments are when you can see that the musicians themselves are smiling and enjoying themselves!
Nothing short of awesome. With the smooth transitions, outstanding variety, and occasional tongue-in-cheekneed (Final Fantasy into Animal Crossing was a delight), it reminded me a lot of the film music medley John Williams arranged for the Oscars back in the early 2000s. The fact that both are sincere love letters to the composers they honor is what really makes them special.
The specific medley you're talking about from the Oscars was, I believe, 2002 and arranged for John Williams by Conrad Pope and it was THE main inspiration for this piece. Well-spotted :)
It sounds like the percussion section had a lot of fun! They're my favorite section to watch during live concerts like this.
I hate to ruin the illusion but that part was not performed live! All the rest was, but percussion had to be prepared ahead of time and played back purely through the sound system! I'm glad it was convincing!!! :)
I got massive chills when you got to play your own theme :DDD
So awesome! Wish I got to see it live!
great concert! It was so fun to be there in person
The musicians were awesome. This was not an easy chart that changes tempi and style on a dime every few seconds, and they crushed it.
I have major retrospective FOMO rn
Pure magic right here, and easily the highlight of my GDC experience.
Awesome to open and close with Koji Kondo. I am amazed at the breadth and variety crammed into 6 minutes!
Gotta bookend with the GOAT
Fantastic concert, very fortunate to have watched live!
Great concert! Thanks for inserting the names and composers at the bottom! I was missing that from the original broadcast on Twitch.
This was my first GDC and this Medley was one of the best things that made this event such a memorable experience for me. I'm also super glad that I had the chance to meet and chat with you after the GDCA Ceremony. Thank you for inspiring me and a whole generation!
Fantastic concert, big congratulations to you and Brian!
Wonderful wonderful medley - much love to em but I adore how much you highlighted the real diversity of this young but vast industry outside of just Nintendo
Monkey Island :)
Got some nice chills out of this one.
Just beautiful ❤️
This is a celebration, and the audience is celebrating. Doesn't get any better than this!
So amazing. And so little time to include all worth mentioning in there. It's impossible to cover everything! I wonder what it could have been if you were given a full 4 movement symphony to do this. Wink wink.
Please talk about how you put this thing together on PWL :D
Very nice selection! Love the Fallen Down portion.
Great conducting job!
How many rehearsals did you get?
Really excellent diversity of music in this - such a hard job to pick, but I think everyone involved did a fantastic job! What a brilliant orchestra to weave seamlessly through all of that.
And now for the 8-bit version. Performed on GUITAR HERO.
Fun arrangement! Did you come up with the outline and have Brian orchestrate it or how much did each of you contribute to it?
I sent Brian a very detailed outline of the order of the themes and their precise excerpts, plus the instrumentation I'd chosen (which implies some degree of the arrangement). He then made a thorough first pass, and I gave him a bunch of feedback (including reshuffling the order a smidge) and we iterated til it was done! I would say I had the high level creative vision with lots of opinions on the particulars, but he definitely did lots of heavy lifting in that first pass!
@@awintory that is more or less what I figured and I appreciate the breakdown! As an arranger/orchestrator myself (and one still wishing to arrange Banner Saga and your other works 😉 ), I love hearing about the process that others use!
Fantastic work! Love the variety of music
Fitting all of those into a medley is impressive! Great work!
Gosh, that was magical
Fantastic medley! Loved the transitions and song selection
That’s wonderful
This was fantastic!! Bravo!!
Absolutely love this!
Wonderful!
loved seeing Grant Kirkhope in there. I think the only thing I would add is the Elder Scrolls theme.
Great medley! Austin did you stitch it together or "just" conduct? (Not that I'd beschmirch what's involved in conducting...).
Unrelated that is such a "raw" mix. It makes me realise how accustomed I am to hearing a more processed final product, with high & low pass filters, compression, touch of reverb etc.
That or I'm attributing to the mix what i should be to stage/room.
I left another comment on this video explaining the response but short version is that I made the outline of all the excerpts with very precise instructions of which portions of which themes, and in what order, then chose the instrumental lineup, then turned it over to an arranger named Brian LaGuardia who did a draft, which we then iterated on together.
Woah are you conducting Austin?
Yep! This was the opening of a full concert
