Cascadia quake and tsunami: What it would look like in Central Oregon
Вставка

- It happens every few hundred years, and it slams the Oregon Coast with powerful earthquakes and huge tsunami waves.
We're not exactly overdue for it, but it could happen at any time.
The Big One - a Cascadia Subduction Zone Quake - a truly disruptive natural disaster. So 150 miles inland, are we going to feel anything? And what will the impact be on every day life here in Central Oregon?
Central Oregon Daily's Allen Schauffler brings us this look at the Cascadia Subduction Zone and what it could do to our world.
(This first aired in September 2019)
Prepare for 3 weeks on your own. Water, radios, food, medicine.
Probably double that!
3 weeks at least! And that's if you are in a populated area. Those of us in the hinterland are SOL for a very long time, but most of us choose to ignore this.
@@MaizeANDBlue1957 can't hurt.
I've been a prepper for the last few years, and could probably survive for 3 months or more. The only issue would be getting water for my gravity feed filter, but I'm only a mile from the Columbia River and double that from the Sandy River.
I really want to tell a Mormon's were right joke here
But most people aren't prepared
My boss will still want us to come to work…..
Then he dies for being neglectful and an idiot and you sue for millions for making you go to work in hazardous conditions.
😮😂😊
Make sure to stash your Mountain Dew 2 litters in Hefty bags X)/* And never forget.... WILSON!!!!!!!!
Make sure you have your scuba gear 😫
cant come to work if there is no "Work"
I work with search dogs and there was a disaster training planned here in the NW, we were working with a FEMA guy from DC in charge of trainings like that and he said it was going to be so bad "he prayed he was dead when it happens". The US is in no way as prepared as Japan is for major quakes.
The US is in no way prepared...
Just wait 'till Yellowstone blows....
@@walkinginthewilderness4339 I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy...
When did this comment (from the FEMA person) take place?
Female will not help you.
He's the only geologist I've heard say there's a direct correlation between the Cascadian mega quakes and immediate volcanic activity. Every other geologist says it isn't likely unless the volcano is ready to blow anyway, like Mount Saint Helens.
Truth is they do not know for certain, there have been numerous instances where volcanic activity has followed major quakes around the world, most scientists write it off as coincidence but when you just keep having the same "coincidence" maybe is not actually a coincidence. The fact is scientists are consistently wrong and have to revise their working theories. Those volcanoes are here because of that subduction plate.
I guess we'll see who's right eventually
He is most definitely right!
Its a possible connection, from mazama to now there's been dozens of cascadia quakes and many many more eruptions. Mt hood had a major eruption in the late 1700s 81 years after the 1700 quake.
Living in rural western Oregon, we have lived through snow that caused disruption, and we have learned to have food, water, medicine, and other essential things that can last for a month stocked up. When the quake hits the best scenario is that you live through it and have enough essential supplies to make it till roads can be opened back up. Being able to stay put for the first month and wait it out will probably save you from starvation or being a victim of violence from desperate people who didn't prepare.
Not to mention the thousands of refugees from the west. It's going to be mayhem with so many people armed to the teeth.
FEMA: "thank you for your contribution"
Did you guys experience the ice storm earlier this year? We had a pretty bad one here near Eugene.
The advantage of living on the ocean is everything can be resuplied by boat.
This is a huge advantage compared to landlocked states.
True, except we wouldn't know where the new coast line would be. @@jabreck1934
I'm watching this a block away from the ocean here in Brookings.
How fast can you get out?
@@kayeb7809 Ten minutes
Wow, I certainly hope you and everyone in your vicinity has a solid escape plan, and your pets as well.
The geology just north of town appears very fragile. E.g., the Carpenterville Rd area of hills seem they would fall into the ocean. From Smith River to Gold Beach the topography looks very unstable.
Harbor here
If you live in the PNW this quake in going to be one hell of a ride. Being prepared is not what you think, there will be nothing as far as infrastructure for a very long time and you will need to get used to the smell of death and decay.
100% true, I have done disaster response, as for a NW analogy think Oso landslide x 1 million.
Developing shelter and other skills is vital.
Significant Rise and backflow in Columbia River
As well as the Willamette river flooding into Portland and other cities up stream.
if You’re home when the earthquake begins: plug the bathtub, fill it to the brim with water.
It could be of help in a water shortage.
Right. Because then you can take a bath anytime you want.
If the land drops like it did in Japan 2011 and the last big one here in 1700, parts of the 101 will be permanently submerged e.g. Barview and Rockaway Beach. Warrenton will probably never recover, it's already below sea level.
Watch Nick Zentner Prof of Geology Ellensburg, Wa State University. The land will rise up (7 feet?) the tsunami will be large enough to cover that area. Nick did some videos and lectures on the Seattle fault and the Farallon Plate, as well as many others including Yellowstone
If Oregon could figure out a way to tax plate tectonics, it would.
Don't worry it figured out how to tax all the people living on those tectonic plate.
With no sales tax, the revenue has to come from somewhere.
@@Me97202 LOL. Ever heard of high property taxes? State personal income taxes? Oregon has both

If a significant section of the Cascadia moves it will make Fukoshima look like a tremor.
Fukushima was a nuc from the globalists, cabal , NWO, NOT natural at all. We are in a war
The biggest difference between a megaquake in the US vs Japan is that no American coastal communities have seawalls anything like they have in Japan, so the tsunamis will roll right through.
Yeah we could learn a thing or more about how they prepare for quakes every year but were too ignorant infrastructural wise.🤦♂️
Hope for the best.... prepare for the worst
If you live on the coast, there isn’t much you can do
Here on top of the hill in Troutdale I don't worry a lot about a tsunami, but being in a ground floor apartment, I do worry about the two floors above me coming down during the earthquake.
I've got the _'Myshake'_ app on my phone, and supposably it gives me a warning before it hits. Not much else I can do except sleep out in the parking lot every night.
Depends a lot on how And when the structure was built. Newer structures are built more earthquake resistant.
I have all I need. .......in my apartment.
And there's the rub.

I remember hearing about "the big one" when I was a teenager in the 90s.
Naw, like everyone else they are too busy staring at their phones
Well, they should be. Maybe they shouldn't be "obsessed" but definitely educated and aware; regarding this topic. I mean; that's the practical response to this inevitable, upcoming, apocalyptic event.
@@sgtpepper1138 same here but in the 70's and 80's
Far from obsessed, more like aware. Lived my whole life(60yrs) hearing about it, learning and practicing basic survival skills in case I need them someday. Not gonna worry about something I can't control. If/when it does happen I'll do whatever I can/have to to hopefully survive the event. Certainly not going to live in fear worrying about it.

By living in Kansas?
Wow... Batdorf and Rodney.♡.
Jokes aside - it will happen - prepare!
It's better to not put supplies in the basement.
A small shed in the yard, with water, a camp kitchen, some canned food. One gallon per day per person, for two weeks, is three of the five gallon jugs. A family of four, twelve of them. Also a filter kit to refill all the soon to be empty jugs, from surface sources.
That sounds like a lot? It is.
The alternative is to buy a good quality filter, and keep clean empty jugs around. And walk your neighborhood, look for ditches, other water. Imagine walking from your home with a cart or wheelbarrow to fill buckets, bring them home, and filter into clean jugs...every few days.
Take your pick, make a plan, whatever you're approach, take action now.
Is that John Batdorf from Batdorf and Rodney? Love thse guys.
You forgot the Tsunami!
Here on the beautiful island of Oahu, we have nowhere to evacuate to except up.
You will get a ton of people that will try to drive up to Tantalus Lookout but in the town areas, the very best option is to evacuate up. Meaning evacuate above the third floor in a building that is more than ten stories tall.
One possibility is to build these high rise evacuation shelters next each fire station so that you have Fire and EMS together along with EmComm communications.
I say this because we worry about saving residents from a catastrophic tsunami but the conversation never goes to how are we going to save all of our firefighters, paramedics or their vehicles and equipment.
Fire Stations in general usually has plenty of food supplies but never enough for an entire community.
Ok, think in terms of a catastrophic tsunami has already occurred, each high rise building with survivors is going to be a miniature city for a week or much longer.
In each of these cases, shelter, food, water and medicine will take priority, that is a given.
Each one of these high rise shelters have a heliport at the very top in order to bring medical personnel and supplies in, with survivor victims going out in an orderly fashion. Just like a battlefield in Vietnam.
Communications is going to be very important and by allowing local Amateur radio clubs access to these high rise shelters is going to be equally important.
Repeaters and antennas in a linked network such as the DOT Repeater Network in Florida for hurricanes manned by Ham radio operators will help authorities and citizens equally alike. We are talking about digital and analog communications.
These structures can be designed to store and power Ham radio communications for the long term. That can be done with wind and solar power in partnership with local Amateur radio clubs, ARES, DEM, American Red Cross and so on. This will also provide emergency electricity by use of DC to AC power inverters that would also include LED lighting also.
There can be storage lockers for emergency food such as MRE’s and HDR’s but also emergency hospital supplies also.
One plan of thought could be to design each high rise shelter like Walmart does with their “Planograms”, meaning each store is designed the same and easy for customers to go right to the products and items a customer needs and done.
Each having the same design should theoretically be cheaper to build. This should also make building permits easier to obtain and to act on in a timely fashion.
The goal is to save as many lives as humanly possible but they need to start these processes now, not after the tsunami hits…
Fend for yourself and quit relying on the government.
Gold finger!
He's the man, the man with the midas touch.
Not to mention, it could trigger deep fault lines in the west hills of Portland near downtown.
Both the east and west side of the Willamette River will be flooded, OHSU and the surrounding facilities will come crashing down, no bridge will be passible, PDX airport will be flooded, no available emergency services. It's total decimation at a 9.0 level.
I was totally gobsmacked having just moved to Spain, only to be hit with minor quakes for a few days.
I live near where the Boones Ferry used to cross the willamette, just south of Wilsonville. If Boones Bridge collapsed it would really screw things up, I’d be alright, but would cut me off from one of my caches for when SHTF. I have a few others around the state and have been enjoying exploring back roads thru the wilderness from i5 to 97 and beyond. Myself and 3 friends have our roles and coordinates to meet if something big happens before we’re 70 (33 years away)
Seems every road will be blocked. No gas.
No electric.
No food. Possibly no shelter besides tents and rvs.
Sounds smart
@@woodman1701 yup. All these people thinking they’re gonna be “driving” to their bug out spot.
The Cascadia subduction zone along the Oregon Coast is about 11 miles off the coast. 85 miles from Portland and about
300 miles from Central Oregon. The Cascade mountain range will filter most of the shock wave and water would not reach Central Oregon. Bend needs to prepare for thousands of cars and people escaping the quake from Portland, Medford,
Salem, and Eugene. Food, gas would be interrupted for days/weeks due to no deliveries from Portland, Eugene, Salem.
Luckily many bridges will be gone so no cars will be getting through for some time. People will come but it all depends on how much of the infrastructure survives in the valley and how many people are tasked with fixing it. For many days most of the people in the valley will be stuck in place.
Fuel tank farms in the Willamette Valley will not survive the quake so there will be no petroleum products for a long time.
Cascadia subduction zone doesn’t seem to be like the other subduction systems found around the Pacific Ring of Fire. I suspect, in the next several years, more research will confirm this.
HWY 97 represent woot woot!

Super interesting theory

This will 100% happen.
Was actually cool you can see that wave of energy coming at you when an earthquake hits
Very sad that you lead your life fretting over a 9.0 earthquake that may or may not happen. I lived through the Alaskan earthquake and the Loma Prieta earthquake. Those two combined didn't do anywhere near the damage a tornado or hurricane can create. We saw firsthand what a back-to-0back hurricane can do. I'll take an earthquake any fay over what the east coast experiences.
And how far were you from the center of those quakes, distance makes a huge difference.
Not fretting. Knock off the judging.
I will never live in Eugene. It sits under a major dam, and only requires a 6.3 magnitude to flood the entire city.
😂😂😂
Yikes. Thanks for the warning
@@tcq2734, don’t believe everything posted in UA-cam comments. Some commentators are clueless.
It's coming soon.
What?
There's no way to tell precisely
Any bridges, even the small ones you forget about on backroads. In Japan, the land was inundated for 7 miles inland. Plenty of videos from all fishing cities along the coastline, during the winter while it was snowing. Watch the videos, Japan will also be a victim of the Farallon Plate disruption
I live on the third floor. Is it better to run down the stairs, into the parking lot?
in a 9.0 you will not be able to stand, nor walk
The best example to learn of how this natural disaster is gonna look is the japan earthquake that happened in 2010. Way too many videos out there to miss how that water comes in after that quake hits. Just learn to prepare and efficiently make an effort to escape. Having something on the side is better than nothing. Again just look at what happened in japan in 2010 seeing that water rising inland. Same thing will happen but just a different region. Thats just the best way I learned how fast i can be to prepare if anything like that happens.
Until a few years ago, a secret emergency bunker for political VIP's was located just East of Bend, near Neff and Hanby Rd. It was disguised as a Night Vision training camp, overseen by the Dept of the Interior. It has since been decommissioned, but is evidence that researchers see Bend as a safe haven.
Good point. I was thinking “ Sisters”. Dr. Goldfinger seems to surmise that hwy 97 may be viable.
@@ediewall6360 At worst the projections expect the 97 corridor to experience strong shaking so as long as the columbia crossings survive it would become the main route north and south. A Cascadia quake is very likely to trigger a major San Andreas quake so I'm not sure why North-South routes matter, assistance will come from the East.
What is the relevance of the intro to this video? Why were they interviewing this guy?
I would like to hear about how a tsunami could/would effect the waterways!

When he gets concerned after a couple of drinks I say , get your deer rifle and shoot a tree that was here 4000 years ago. Further, you will die before you need to worry about being flooded so enjoy life living on the coast.
