@@ianchristian2844 This problem isn't always as visible now but it defintely still exists in a more covert form. A lot of the big online spaces for anime try so hard to be "apolitical" that they inadvertently (or intentionally sometimes) protect those with questionable intentions that hide behind the "it's just an edgy joke" defence. It doesn't take long when looking up content around anime to find people dogwhistling harmful ideas.
You know, im a striver, but i went back to the old ones and i fucking adore XX and Xrd. I have like 60 hrs on Xrd and 25~ on XX, and all i want rn is for that number to go BIGGER
I find it enthralling that you're using video edits as both punctuation *and* as actual words and phrases that come together to make the video feel so full and your emotional state so self-evident while you're making the video. I like how the editing complexity shifts over the course of the video from raw information at pace with your musings to legitimately focusing on specific more technical ideas you're trying to convey when they become relevant. It keeps the information intake relatively constant for someone like me who has vague understanding going in while guiding my foot in the mental door to give me a better idea of what particular concepts you're trying to convey.
There is a fourth reason one could hate the mirror: When you and your opponent play the same character, they likely know what you can and can't do, which means you probably won't be able to get away with some of the goofy crap you would otherwise. Faust players are just as quick to react to your items as they are their own and an I-No player is far more likely to predict when you'll go for Stroke. Depending on how much you rely on the aforementioned goofy stuff, the mirror that's 5-5 on paper could become 6-4 or 7-3 for you specifically.
Just started playing Xrd again with a few friends not too long ago and it made me remember just how fun and unique this game is, definitely my favorite Guilty Gear game
This is a beautifully written love letter, my favorite videos are always when someone just talks about their hyperfixation. Tbh Xrd is my favorite fighting game and I'm new to fighting games. The new player experience is better in Xrd because of gatlings and movement, I will die on this hill.
I loved hearing your ramblings about this game, xrd despite me showing up late (early 2021) still managed to become my favourite fighting game of all time and nothing has topped it yet See ya in the player lobbys leon
@@AdamJorgensen I get its to fit Strive's design philosophy but the Strivification of so many characters just disappoints me coming from Xrd, I dread what they'll do to Venom. Except Pot, Pot is amazing in Strive, thank you Daisuke.
Same here so eventually i move to bridget but sadly they also do bs thing to my boy to girl thanks to the change everytime i talk about bridget is main in strive ppl say im the freak doesn't play the game. Thanks arc system work im so appreciate your hard work.
MAN, does this guy get it. This video goes fantastically in depth into why I have so much more pure fun with it than most other games. The rule of cool prevails! Xrd's such a fantastic mess. It's layers give birth to chaos, and the chaos gives birth to fun for those that eventually learn their own ways of navigating it. It says a lot that I've gone from hating Danger Time back when Xrd was "current" to grinning from ear to ear every time I see that countdown.
I love when a game gets all the ports and just lets me get filthy casual arcade mode with it. R+ is that for me since i went back to my old handhelds first finding the GBA port (not actually r÷),then to psp (little too zoomed in and framerate occasionally dips) then the vita port which is chef's kiss on a handheld. Also all aboard potemkin airlines.
30 minutes in and this video is just so amazing! The editing is very well done and satisfying, you can tell how much work was put into this! Happy thanksgiving!
How am I only finding this video now? This is one of the best breakdowns of Xrd and its layers I’ve ever seen. Had a big goofy smile the whole time. It really is a shame that with the direction many fighting games today take, there’s very little chance that we’ll see anything like xrd/central fiction again. I’ve grown more accustomed to games like granblue and strive (strive only being because of slayer lol), but there’s a certain charm to the specific feeling xrd gives both in gameplay and in execution. The way it all blends together to make each character experience truly unique while also having universal experiences throughout is what’s really special about this game and the way you portrayed that was really well done. Great work!
You might not like the archetypes video, but seeing what Faust was like in that video is what eventually brought me to get Xrd in the first place, I just loved the idea of playing a wacky guy wearing a bag with a lot of weird moves that changes his game plan on a dime, even if I got it very close to Strives release by that same token I don't feel nearly as great about Strive Faust, he's thematically a completely different character, even if a lot of his moves are the same, I found it hard to get attached, and without a second character that I really like (potemkin was close, just that games I played as him felt a bit samey). I didn't stick around for very long. Also yes in every fighting game I've played playing dittos are bangers
45:07 Not really, no. Most people dont actually use it, but for my friends who dont know what "5P" means, seeing them mash away and have fun is glorious. They'll eventually graduate to technical, but for now, let em have fun
20:42 Gunflame- A projectile that is to apply some pressure for when the opponent is not in kissing range, very active so it’s great for controlling space as well, and also makes for an excellent meaty option when combined with YRC. Sees some rare use in combos in counter hit situations but not much. Comes with a feint as well. Dead Spike- Mainly used for combo filler in the corner or rarely at mid thanks to the dash cancel that it has. It also works as a pressure reset tool if the opponent is too afraid to press anything. Also life steals. Bandit Revolver- A special primarily used to end Sol’s combos with the opponent being knocked down next to him, occasionally low crushes. Gauntlet Hades- A strong combo extender that provides massive corner carry and life steal with its second hit. It also acts as an opener thanks to the first hit being an overhead. Volcanic Viper- Traditional DP with an additional hit to provide KD, only difference between S and HS being speed hight and dmg. Inferno Divder- C version acts an as a traditional dp while the D version acts as a combo ender thanks to its lifesteal, better scaling, bigger hit box, and lack of invlun. The D version can also be used for cross ups as well when combined with rapid cancels. Knockdown- The dp follow up that does what it says, provides oki. Axe Kick/Straight punch - the former is an HKD DP follow up with lifesteal that provides oki while the former trades Oki and lifesteal for corner carry and combo extension thanks to its wall sticking property.
Still my fav fighting game of all time alongside Guilty Gear XX Reload/AC+R. I think this will probably be the pinnacle/end of the series and sadly well never see a new game with the same level of passion due to the direction Arc System Works is going with their fighting games. As much as I want to fall in love with a new Guilty Gear game, I just don't see the future being bright for that. I would like to be wrong though.
That’s just peak, baby. Ain’t nothin else to it. Greatest fighting game ever made. Don’t you dare say I’m wrong, I will die on this space base with air enough for two.
tbf, that archetypes video got me into Xrd-- _dont get me wrong, idk what a 2H is,_ but I've been on this journey where multiple fighting games have come out that ease me into Xrd's whole _input system_ a bit more through SF6 Modern Controls & DNF Duel as a whole, to SF6 classic controls, to Strive, to DBZF, to Xrd. You may hate that video for yourself but I couldn't thank you enough for setting me on this path.
oh and Xrd being such a rough transition from Platform Fighters to 2D fighters got me into relevant games like Checkmate Showdown, Killer Instinct 2013, All Star Battle R, the mentioned DBZF (which got me into Sparking Zero) CentralFiction (which got me into Entropy Effect)
Both your videos and Strive's upcoming release were the reasons I got into Guilty Gear back in 2020. I'm always here to hear you talk about how cool Rev 2 is. Here's hoping I learn how to play it properly soon 🙏
Besides the usual incredible editing and animation, I'm fascinated by how you've been doing the more simple transitions in your videos. The current scene wont just slide off to reveal the next one, it's almost like there's a lower frame rate on them that gives this really unique texture to even the simpler stuff. I commend your work in finding a way to move between shots that is more interesting than cutting from one to another, but quick enough not to bloat your workflow for a relatively minor thing. It's something I'm still struggling to figure out.
Seconds into the video and I already wholeheartedly agree. I fell away from fighting games years ago for numerous reasons, but the one fighting game that I could really really get into and dumb hours into almost daily was YOMI Hustle. Then they dropped one update which completely overhauled the blocking and parrying mechanic, and I didn't like the game anymore. That reminded me of one of the big reasons is that the game I enjoy could be destroyed at anytime. Yes, I can still kind of play with the old parrying as a setting, but the overwhelming majority of the playerbase as moved on so there's no point. It's like when I went from playing Pokemon Showdown almost daily for weeks at a time every few months from never again because they switched to Gen 8 which I hate. Sure, they still allow you to play any generation, but matchmaking is slowly, and some modes would pretty much require manual requests to get games. These "dead" games are the only way to find something to enjoy, keep enjoying it, and not have the game split into anymore fractions that it already is. If I played YOMI Hustle for the first time today, I'd probably like it, but it's just not as good as it used to be.
I probably won't ever be getting into Xrd, as the mechanics are a little too quick for my slow tekken and platform fighter brain, but my GOODNESS this was a beautiful love letter to the game. I never thought much of Xrd other than it being "the Leon Massey game", but it makes me truly happy that such a game exists for those who are able to enjoy it, existing in that perfect goldilocks zone between abandoned/esport, kusoge/polished modernity, and boringly simple/annoyingly complex. Happy for you guys. Maybe with the new rollback I'll give it a shot one, we'll see.
Although I may never actually learn this game proper, Xrd will always have a special place in my heart. This was what most people were playing when I joined my local FGC, and they were very kind to and accepting of a scrubby Tekken player struggling to understand what a jump cancel was and why Ram Dauro wasn't plus despite it have an electric input. In the years since, Xrd has declined in size but has never gone away in our scene. There are still regular brackets run for it here, and we have both vets and newer gen players entering them all the time. Very cool game, arguably one of the best fighting games of its generation.
I don't play fighting games but i'm always happy to hear you gush about em mr. leon. also: 27:58 I really love when you use this matthewmatosis clip. never gets old.
I fucking LOVE mirror matches. It relaly tests your own skill out in a decent way, and it can shore up some gaps in your own gameplay at times. I think they're intrinsically fun as hell. I mean it's practically a matchup you know best, right?
Given that Xrd was the first fighting game I actually learned and cared about with a passion, seeing stuff like this really hits close to home. Thanks Leon.
Hey, Leon. Thank you for this video. I don't know why, but near the end of the video, the music combined with the way you talk about yourself and the game and the channel gave me a fleeting, ephemeral sort of joy. I don't know exactly what triggered it, maybe it was your tone of voice, I dunno. But a very specific, very comforting thought flashed through my mind: "Wow. Life actually is kinda cool, isn't it? Like...we're all very flawed creatures. Incredibly flawed. But...we can find so much joy in so many things. It's almost like a superpower. To just choose to derive joy from something, and not let any sort of negativity get in the way. We're just a bunch of messed up little creatures living our messed up little lives, enjoying the good times when we can, and trying to share 'em with each other. And that's...kinda beautiful." I swear I'm not drunk or high or anything. This piece of mental stimulation just managed to press the exact right buttons for me to briefly glimpse the beauty of existence. And I thought it'd be cool to let you know.
45:45 answered block the high because it's the more better option to continue pressure. leaves open more options for blockstring/resets because of being plus from the air normal.
This is probably the best explanation of why I love Xrd on YT. Game feel, character expression, and wacky aesthetics make this my favorite Gear game. But more importantly, it shaped my tastes for what I want in a fighting game. And I know if the current selection of FGs miss the mark, I can always come back to this game because it's not going anywhere... and it has rollback! Now if I could only get over my social anxiety, I can play this online without having a mental breakdown.
Lovely video, GG revolator was the first game that I seriously tried learning and I still have a soft spot for. I only ever play fighting games locally, but whenever the opportunity presents itself it is always a blast : D
I think I have been very lucky to have been playing Fighterz since day one. It has allowed me to learn almost every character and what they can achieve
Jack-O's gameplan isn't "set in stone" she is very flexible and has a variety of ways to play with her tools. I would say she is almost, if not just, as varied as Venom can be, and I play both of them.
34:59 literally just got off of +r against a long set against a venom as sol and ran into this. It's something i've noticed for a while but wasn't sure how to go about working around the counter-play
Awesome video! I love the end especially, I’ve picked up +R being newish to Guilty Gear and 2d fighters in general (I’ve only really played a lot of Melee/Tekken and a bit of strive) and it’s been a blast! There might not be a ton of people playing but even getting my ass kicked repeatedly hasn’t turned me away at all. I can’t wait to keep digging into the game even if most would say I’m a bit late to the party
@Hababalooo Thanks! Unfortunately I decided to crunch one more course for the year so I didn't have time after all lol. But I'm slotting in 30 hours a month for them for this year and starting a biweekly hopefully next week!
25:05 "...a cast that's small enough that they're all unified reflections of a key point of gameplay, making for a game that's precise in what it wants you to enjoy rather than casting as wide a net as possible" As a fellow Smash Bros appreciator, it's interesting to hear you say that (or at least word it in that specific manner, "what it wants"), because in some fighters, but that series in particular, I think a big part of the entire appeal of getting into the weeds of learning to play beyond some casual fun here and there, is that sometimes what ends up defining a character's gameplay identity in the competitive environment is something completely detached from developer intention. It could be some option that's way stronger than was probably intended shifting a character away from their surface-level design, it could be some mechanical exploit or straight-up bug or oversight that entirely transforms a character's playstyle; but all the same, I think mechanical and character depth leading to a sort of 'punk' movement of players rejecting developer-built frameworks is the ultimate compliment to a game that's ceased receiving updates. Whether this leads to a smaller or larger roster of generally played characters is of little consequence as long as it doesn't kill the game. You kind of touch on this on the next paragraph about dittos and each player having explored a character's possibility space differently, but I wanted to get this out there anyway. Oh also the appeal of I-No is really simple, hoverdashes are cool. :)
This video is lovely and addresses a lot of common concerns for new players but it didn't touch the one that repelled me. Why the fuck does each character have two wakeup timings, unique from the rest of the cast? How does this add anything besides meaningless busy work for a new player? Why do I have to memorize 46 different timings before I can consistently stop people mashing on wakeup? Oki is not a minor thing, you can't really play with intentionality until you learn it. Like the video though, alway happy to see people genuinely love things.
It's really not that important. Any button you'd meaty with is going to have enough actives to catch the timings easy anyway, and projectiles make it even easier. It's only something for advanced level play when you start to understand that you can squeeze in X marginally better setup vs certain characters or not.
After going back and playing this game xrd definitely just has way more sauce the strive. I started with strive and I’ve been playing xrd for like a month now and like it so much more

@@ianchristian2844Say that to the people with K-On profile pictures
Me too was a huge weeb, but I dont get it...Could you explain?
37:39 The Soulja Boy bit is very apt, considering that there's a video of him flexing an imported copy of Accent Core
I think your mixing up what the game is
8:02 this is about the last video I expected to have a 10 second aside about Kafka on the Shore holy shit
Depending on how much you rely on the aforementioned goofy stuff, the mirror that's 5-5 on paper could become 6-4 or 7-3 for you specifically.
not trying to be rude, but "skill issue" feels very appropriate
irrelevant i go for Stroke every time I-No is on the screen
@@emi1807 is it hard playing with one hand
Just started playing Xrd again with a few friends not too long ago and it made me remember just how fun and unique this game is, definitely my favorite Guilty Gear game
This is a beautifully written love letter, my favorite videos are always when someone just talks about their hyperfixation. Tbh Xrd is my favorite fighting game and I'm new to fighting games. The new player experience is better in Xrd because of gatlings and movement, I will die on this hill.
I LOVE JAM!!!!!!!! IT GOES ON TOAST!!!!!!!!
id love a video like this for Melee.
I feel like youd have a really unique perspective on what makes melee good or bad
Honey, wake up! Lemon Massive dropped a video!
26:40 YO it's Coney :D
I loved hearing your ramblings about this game, xrd despite me showing up late (early 2021) still managed to become my favourite fighting game of all time and nothing has topped it yet
See ya in the player lobbys leon
Rev 2 Ram is still my favorite character and I'm still sad at what they did to her in Strive.
Indeed. She's so damned boring in Strive
10:21 George my beloved
Drops a video right as I get back to playing Xrd Dizzy, truly a sign
truly a WHAT?
A game I never get tired of even years later, glad you and many others are still playing. Great video!
Great work!
"GET UP TO ROCK, GET UP TO BURN" umm I think you mean GET A GIRAFFE, GET IT TO BURN
Dougdoug is that you?
You might not like the archetypes video, but seeing what Faust was like in that video is what eventually brought me to get Xrd in the first place, I just loved the idea of playing a wacky guy wearing a bag with a lot of weird moves that changes his game plan on a dime, even if I got it very close to Strives release
by that same token I don't feel nearly as great about Strive Faust, he's thematically a completely different character, even if a lot of his moves are the same, I found it hard to get attached, and without a second character that I really like (potemkin was close, just that games I played as him felt a bit samey). I didn't stick around for very long.
Also yes in every fighting game I've played playing dittos are bangers
This hits the EXACT reasons why I love XRD...
BUT CAN YOU STOP HITTING TYPE LUMINA WITH STRAYS PLEASE?!
Leon released a 50-minute Xrd video. Christmas came early.
Babe wake up Leon Massey guilty gear video
I actually let out a load "YES" when i saw the length of the video
Pavlovian slop feasters we are, I also was in for a hell for a morning when I saw the length, thumbnails
45:07
Not really, no. Most people dont actually use it, but for my friends who dont know what "5P" means, seeing them mash away and have fun is glorious. They'll eventually graduate to technical, but for now, let em have fun
I can't believe Woolie would say that about Leon.

Gunflame- A projectile that is to apply some pressure for when the opponent is not in kissing range, very active so it’s great for controlling space as well, and also makes for an excellent meaty option when combined with YRC.
Can't believe there was a ping pong recommandation in this, thank you
Both your videos and Strive's upcoming release were the reasons I got into Guilty Gear back in 2020. I'm always here to hear you talk about how cool Rev 2 is. Here's hoping I learn how to play it properly soon 🙏
9:34 hold up thats me
Besides the usual incredible editing and animation, I'm fascinated by how you've been doing the more simple transitions in your videos.
I probably won't ever be getting into Xrd, as the mechanics are a little too quick for my slow tekken and platform fighter brain,
but my GOODNESS this was a beautiful love letter to the game.
As an old saying goes: Old is Gold. I know it ain't THAT old, but it's still gold
God I love the transitions in this one haha.
I’m stoked to watch this, though I don’t have time rn, love your long videos
YES MIRRORS ARE THE SHIT
This video makes me want to pick up Xrd again, and try to actually learn some Chipp stuff
Leon, I'd be fascinated to know your thoughts on Death of a Bachelor
I don't play fighting games but i'm always happy to hear you gush about em mr. leon.
also: 27:58 I really love when you use this matthewmatosis clip. never gets old.
I'm honestly excited for the point where Strive stops getting balance patches and I get to stop worrying about whether they'll buff my main
But a very specific, very comforting thought flashed through my mind:
"Wow. And that's...kinda beautiful."
I swear I'm not drunk or high or anything. This piece of mental stimulation just managed to press the exact right buttons for me to briefly glimpse the beauty of existence. And I thought it'd be cool to let you know.
26:41 FELLAS
45:45 answered block the high because it's the more better option to continue pressure. leaves open more options for blockstring/resets because of being plus from the air normal.
5:27 History doesn’t repeat but it often rhymes
XRD ON SALE NOW! GO GO GO!
I think I have been very lucky to have been playing Fighterz since day one. It has allowed me to learn almost every character and what they can achieve
Xrd got me into fighting games man
I like Leon Massey and his work
4:02 with this quote, and the title of the video, looks like he finally married his copy of Xrd boys.
You like Faust's door move because with a YRC it turns into a mix-up.
I like Faust's door move because he hits you with a door.
We are not the same.
36:56 Amazing comeback. That Dizzy was sent back to school.
This is a beautiful video. I almost shed a tear.
Im thankful for more Leonel Massive content
Remind me in three weeks when I'm (hopefully...) not busy af. I'll game the SHIT out of Xrd and Melee over the holidays. My body is ready!
Ok👍
Play Guilty Gear Xrd and Melee
@Hababalooo Thanks! Unfortunately I decided to crunch one more course for the year so I didn't have time after all lol. But I'm slotting in 30 hours a month for them for this year and starting a biweekly hopefully next week!
And Xrd character color options were tight.
"I don't care that you don't like strive, even if I don't like it either"
he gets it.
43:00 hehe, British man saying bowls sounds like balls 😂.
25:05 "...a cast that's small enough that they're all unified reflections of a key point of gameplay, making for a game that's precise in what it wants you to enjoy rather than casting as wide a net as possible"
As a fellow Smash Bros appreciator, it's interesting to hear you say that (or at least word it in that specific manner, "what it wants"), because in some fighters, but that series in particular, I think a big part of the entire appeal of getting into the weeds of learning to play beyond some casual fun here and there, is that sometimes what ends up defining a character's gameplay identity in the competitive environment is something completely detached from developer intention.
I started with strive and I’ve been playing xrd for like a month now and like it so much more
I love hearing you yap about this game. Never touched Guilty Gear but I'm loving it through your enjoyment
