A serious Man is about meaning, and it implies god is vengeful. It is the story of Job the ending is further punishment for accepting of temptation /after clear warnings/ but also that this shit does in fact happen for no reason, test of faith and all that. He definitely asked for the ending. So did the son. It IS at odds with their filmography which is the senselessness of life, this is about the senselessness of faith. I'm Catholic yet really this film is probably the best film about faith and my favourite Coen film.
