    The German Version of his title is interesting. The word Emperor can be changed into german in two ways. In german you would say Kaiser (from Caesar). This is the normal term used for this title, like the roman emperor is called "römischer Kaiser" or emperor napoleon would be "Kaiser Napoleon" Or you can use the Latin word Imperator, which is the word- origin of emperor. But the title of Imperator is like never used in german. Now to the interesting title of palpatine. In episode 4 they call him the Kaiser. This is like you said a title for an ancient, medival or even modern monarch. But in episode 5, 6 and everything afterwards they call him Imperator. And since Imperator isnt used in German as a normal word, when you say "der Imperator" you nearly always mean Palpatine

    Well palpatine presented himself to most of the senate as what he truly looked like and explained it as the Jedi attack on him. While to the empire outside of coruscant he showed himself as he did in the prequel trilogy There is also a scene in the Tarkin novel where an imperial officer is horrified at a statue of Palpatine being built with how he actually looked like and thought it was a mistake but Tarkin told him it weren’t and Palpatine really looked like that

    This is what made him unique among emperors in fiction. From what I know, Palpatine was originally not even going to be force sensitive, but still being able to call the shots, which I think is not only uninteresting, but wouldn't make sense, seeing how if Vader was the only force sensititve, nothing would be stopping him from just killing the emperor. There were people that outranked Vader like Tarkin and Tarkin only survived because Palpatine commanded Vader to obey Tarkin. Palpatine was so enigmatic, most folks just knew him as The Emperor and he became a commanding force, so much so that people hardly ever referred to him by name. It's more interesting that he just has a simple robe. Doesn't even wear fancy stuff. Palpatine was more about just power itself rather than flaunting wealth, so he never looked ostentatious. The rest of the empire didn't even know he was force sensitive and only a select few even knew that he was Darth Sidious and very force sensitive. They all initially thought Vader was the last of the Jedi religion. This made him stand out among the other emperors and unlike the others, he actually used real power to subjugate others.

    The reason I loved the emperor and his design so much as a kid (and still do) is because it emphasises what real power is. As is typical in fiction you often mention your arch villain quite a lot before they actually turn up on screen. When palpy turns up looking like he dragged himself out of the gutter after seeing how everyone fears him, you fear him more. You feel his raw power and wisdom, he doesn't need to look the part to be the baddest in town. As an audience it makes you eager to see what he's gonna do next. Also dude, don't make a star wars video if you knowledge on the universe is so poor. You don't need to watch the extended universe to know why he's all wrinkly and sickly looking. It's in ROTS.

    I think Palpatine’s aesthetic works in-universe because to the public it’s a reminder of his victimhood and survival of the Jedi coup attempt that culminated their orchestration of the Clone Wars. To the believers in the empire, he doesn’t look sinister - he looks like a martyr.

    Outside of the movies, it is rare for him to make public appearances, a lot of the moat public responsibilities are implied that his second hand, Mass Ameeda, runs it on his behalf.

    A serious Man is about meaning, and it implies god is vengeful. It is the story of Job the ending is further punishment for accepting of temptation /after clear warnings/ but also that this shit does in fact happen for no reason, test of faith and all that. He definitely asked for the ending. So did the son. It IS at odds with their filmography which is the senselessness of life, this is about the senselessness of faith. I'm Catholic yet really this film is probably the best film about faith and my favourite Coen film.

    Actually, long before the prequels, it was well known he was Palpatine. I didn't hear about Sith or Darth Sidious used as a name until the Prequels, however. I think the first time you hear about Sith was in Star Wars Dark Forces Jedi Knights 2. I had only the trial but people talked about Sith in it. Palpatine was his name in the toy line and books (I had Return of the Jedi in book form) so it was around.

    The Tarkin novel gives a pretty good impression of how Tarkin and other high level officers took notice of the emperor’s physical and behavioral differences from chancellor palpatine. Tarkin even internally thinks about all the different conspiracy theories people have about how Mace Windu’s attempted “coup” might’ve mentally affected palpatine. Tarkin describes the emperor’s robes as “that of an ascetic” and as a result Imperial fashion trends took notice and was less gaudy and more simplistic than it was during the republic while also commenting even standard issue uniform design tended to veer away from ostentatious displays of medals, capes, and large epaulets, due to the emperor’s disapproval of such displays.

    Look I know there were black cowboys, but seeing a black “outlaw cowboy” takes me right out of the vibe so much , it just doesn’t feel right for some reason. They don’t seem as tough and cowboy enough than seeing a white outlaw or a white cowboy, it’s probably why those don’t sell very well versus when we see films like “ballad of buster Scruggs” or “true grit” the white outlaws in those just feel so much more authentic and scary for some reason

    The main reason for his "dull appearance"(in fashion at least) is cause palpatine HATED the "pomp and pageantry" of the galaxy. He preferred wearing colors like black & dark blue, but at the same time knew that pomp & pageantry ruled the bureaucracy of the republic, & as such wore the crimson red of the republic banner AFTER his declaration of the Empire however, when none could oppose him(or atleast when he felt no one could) he shed the bureaucratic clothes and adorned one of the colors of his choosing (black) Hell that's also the reason we see variations of the imperial banner in blue/black or just plain black, cause it didn't spell pageantry, but POWER

    Palpatine for all his ego surprisingly fall under the Modest Royalty trope, when royals forgo fancy outfits for simple/practical clothes. Instead of decking himself in elaborate Imperial regalia he simply wears a black cloak. He only ever wears fancy clothes when he was just a Senator during the Clone Wars ironically.

    Vader *was* tolerated within the Empire lol, these bureaucrats who succeeded the Republic were absolutely done being pushed around by magical Jedi. Palpatine fronted, as you say, as a skilled politician. Vader had none of that deft ability and was just a blunt tool of enforcement, probably told not to mess with Palps' politicians. Vader was the tolerated "outsider", he played that role.

  • @Fuk99999
    @Fuk99999 10 місяців тому

    “He looks like a witch and that he would fit in middle earth” Funny you say that, because that’s what makes his design sync up with Vader’s treatment as a “religious zealot” Palpatine and Vader are in no way out of place with human cultural evolution, particularly indo european and semitic/ugaritic/Egyptian ones. Think of Palpatine less as an emperor and more of a high priest figure or even a Druid and suddenly the imagery makes sense. Once upon a time, priest classes were the only thing above a king, even a god king, as the priest represents a more thorough divine connection. In truth, this class was highly reliant on its ability to pass positive heuristics down to the lower rungs, and their means of enforcing that was the king/emperor. Second, successors to those priests would be selected from a very small minority of civilians that showcased similar traits of intelligence and propensity for wisdom. And this is also where Vader’s imagery further binds to it. The rest of the empire can mock the “old religion” all it wants. That old religion is still in charge of the empire and it’s value structure. It’s not a depth that George intended, but it is a fascinating one nonetheless
