The BEST Camera Mode and Setting Might NOT Be What You Think (Photography Quick Chat)

  • Today I want to share my opinion on which camera mode and setting is the best for photography. Many people said that M Manual mode is the best because you are able to control every setting in the camera, but in this video I will share some reasons why that is not the case, and also explain about the functions of the other modes. By choosing the right mode and setting, hopefully you will be able to take better quality pictures right away.

My favorite mode is Auto. Works every time

Great video for the beginners out there. No echo or reverb - sounds nice and clear.

The sound is fine. Thanks for this overview of the mode dial. It has made me rethink my approach to longer telephoto.

I need sometimes the M mode, especially for handheld macro photos. I have been user of aperture priority mode for a long time, but nowadays I use often the shutter priority too.

    Nice explanation: well done!
When I started out I thought that going to M on the dial would put me in control AND force me to learn more about the camera and photography. And maybe it dis at the time.
And then I sort of got stuck there so to speak: really never used P or A or S modes. So I am an "extremes" kinda photographer: either full manual or 100% iA modes on my Lumix cameras. And I use M not because it makes me a professional but because it suits me.

Hey Joe, good to see you! Thanks for sharing some interesting points, kind of surprised me that you never use P, A, or S. All the best 😁

Thanks Gary, as already mentioned shooting with RAW and the program shift one can "shift" the preference between aperture and shutter speed within P mode and do the possibly necessary adjustments in post. Be careful of your ISO still.

Sound is good. I know Adobe has A.i. software that fixes auto. Micro Four Thirds made a short video showing the it. She left a link in the first pinned comment.

I will check that out, thank you! I had some paid audio plugins to reduce reverb, but I think it was the combination of my older mic and the room that causes me the problem in the first place. Thank you 😁

I never noticed excessive reverb in previous videos. However, did you consider adding some sound absorbers like rugs, blankets, or curtains? These can be placed out of the camera frame. So you can maintain the look of your in-studio videos.

      @Gary_W  2 місяці тому +1

I have tried adding a few large rugs, some placed on the floor, some placed on the wall, they do help but they don't eliminate the reverb completely. Maybe I'm too obsessed with the audio in my room 😁

Sounds much better! I can still hear a bit of the room verb but it sounds much more natural to me now... That's the problem with Omni and condenser mics they can be too sensitive in certain situations

Thanks for letting me know. I agree, for indoor I wouldn't use omni or condenser anymore, I'm very happy with the SM57.

I think of P mode as a combo A and S modes. You get to use program shift to dial either the shutter or aperture that you are looking for. It lets me spend more time on my composition and less time fiddling with dials.

I like the.
Ability to control the camera myself. Maybe it's my controlling nature. But I get rich positive images when I do it myself instead of letting the camera, decide for me. If I wanted the camera to decide for me. I would just drop it in auto mode. Just take pictures of anything. But even in auto, you don't get the creativity of that smooth sailing water effect. Great video. It was nice listening to you, but I'm keeping it in manual.

Wedding photographer here. The safest mode is to use P mode and you can still change the aperture and shutter in P mode and that's called program shift. And I use auto ISO.
For example let's say I'm shooting the Olympus or Panasonic lens at f1.8 or even worse the f1.2 lens. I'm in doors and I'm taking photos at f1.2 but then go outside for photos in P mode the camera will know this is too bright and will stop the len down to f2.8.
The f1.8 lens outdoors you might need a shutter of 8000ths of a second or a ISO 100. And some cameras might not have a fast enough shutter or even a extended lower ISO of 100.

I did not know about program shift. I will pursue that. Thanks.
