- The US Navy has decided to repurpose the troubled Zumwalt-class destroyers by retrofitting them with hypersonic missiles. Hypersonic missiles will be installed on three US destroyer-class ships this month, according to a report in Asia Times.
With this move, Pentagon aims to increase its capabilities at sea and counter possible Chinese and Russian threats. The Zumwalt-class destroyers would be the first US naval platform to be armed with hypersonic weapons.

Good It is about time I was starting to worried about the delay of US ability to get their own hypersonic missiles, however I do believe that United States will do better than the Chinese and Russia when it comes to hypersonic missiles.
Isn't this the same zumwalt destroyer that doesn't have any ammunitions for it's originally planned main railguns? Because the US navy deemed the cost of firing all of it's rounds in a single battle would be twice the cost the of the vessel itself?

No my friend you haven’t miss anything even the latest US hypersonic test was a failure and US dose not have hypersonic weapons. Even Chinese hypersonic is not as fastes Russian missiles, Chinese only hypersonic is a anti ship missile just over the minimum speed of a hypersonic speed. Which it’s still better then US failure after failure tests.
We had supersonic missiles in the cold war, we stopped using them for the same reason we didn’t focus on anti-air defense. We focused on the air force and navy really, didn’t believe that missiles alone could win the war. If any missiles were to be fired it would be nuclear warheads

Doesn't the area that is declared as Hypersonic only start at Mach 6? I vaguely remember the F14 Tomcat having long-range air-to-air missiles at Mach 5 about 30 years ago. Then they would have had Hypersonic rockets back then.
I think that category is only supersonic, we are talking of HYPER - > Mach 5 above. But Russia has Mach 20 above.
Mach 5 +1mph . Anything above mach 5. The thing is that missiles have a high speed at some point along their path but not the whole way. Air to air missiles generally have an initial burn, glide to their target on inertia and some save just a lil bit of fuel to make manuvers at final approach. Aa missiles are mach 3+, 4+, 5+ etc, but not for long so they don't count

Here is the easier question; We see the Russian Air Force can't even control the skies above Ukraine; what the hell do you think the massive U.S. Air Force would do to them? There is a bit of iff. Most ballistic and high altitude missiles ate hypersonic at some point along the flight path. Hypersonic missles as defined in the east, can maintain this for the majority of the flight, and some not even at particularly high altitudes. You see, ICBMs are hypersonic and they can be intercepted so Its not just a matter of terminal stage velocity. If they can't achieve and maintain it along the entire path, they'll be useless. It remains to be seen with some "properly independent" information.
Casue last I remember they had a successful test, but not a successful missile, if that makes sense.
I think a lot of people think that hypersonic ability is something brand new. Like you said, the US (and Russia and China, etc.) have had hypersonic technology for decades. There's so much more to the effectiveness of hypersonic missiles than just being able to do hypersonic speed. I'm not convinced that what was used in Ukraine was truly a hypersonic missile. Anyone can claim that's what it was. Like you, I've seen reports of tests that were successful in launch and flight, without success of the overall goal. The US DoD announced last year that he first hypersonic missiles would be put into service this year. So, that's not something that just got announced in light of what's happening in Ukraine.

FYI: Mach 27 is orbital velocity, so the Russian Avangard is basically equivalent to a launch vehicle, meaning it's very large and expensive. Don't expect Russia to field many of them.

It is my understanding that before this Zumwalt Class Destroyer could fire hyper-sonic missiles, it needs to have the missiles first. it is also my understanding that America doesn't have hyper-sonic missiles for quite some time yet. Two previous tests failed. my questions to CRUX are...
