It’s because there are no more guitars available to buy Rick, you’ve got them all in your studio.
I dont even own one ( really want to someday ) my dad ain't letting me by one because "I have too many instruments" ( I just have 1 digital piano, 1 keyboard, and 2 ukes and some other indian instruments ) but i do want to have guitar
Xaxaxaxa
@@TECH3_ That's far from being too many instruments in my opinion. Hopefully you'll be able to get a guitar sooner than later

“I like solos you can sing” - great, great piece of advice
And not his. It's the most quoted advice
November rain comes to mind
I teach people to play guitar daily and diarrhea of the hands is a huge problem.
the guitarist from the band The Silver Thinkers is awesome, unique solos and riffs !!
Smells Like Teen Sprit is like the biggest and most basic example to this, the song's solo it basicly the same as vocal lines but it still works. That should be the ground if you are trying to work on that kind of solos. At beginning just create melody with vocals and try to play it on lower notes, as you progress, learn new stuff and have newer influences you will start to create better stuff.
The obvious answer would be:
Brushy One-String.
Of course
me
Buckethead
@Alien Alien we program . We build. We become the software. Is it art yes. Will computers replace guitar ...never. guitar is AI .but it takes two hands to tap keyboards and play guitar.
Country Music
Matt Bellamy was my guitar hero growing up. He can solo, he can move around a stage and really sell a heavy riff
I grew (and still am growing) up with him and he absolutely got me in to guitar, a true hero of mine
Me too, Matt Bellamy is one of my favorite musicians out there.
Yes such an obvious choice. He’s overlooked so much. And he’s also a virtuoso pianist.
“All the chops in the World don’t mean anything if somebody can’t sing your solo”. Great Quote Rick!
That said, someone can sing anyone's solo. There's a point, though, where more credit goes to the singer and less to the solo and soloist.
How the hell can ANYONE sing the solo to Machine Gun or Eruption?
I read this comment at the exact moment he said that
Absolutely, melodic, emotional solo's appeal to the general public as well as aficionados but you need a great song underneath to propel it.
@Rios Salvajes Agreed, his rhythm playing is underrated. A great example of his rhythm guitar is the song Top Jimmy.
John frustiante, the man myth and legend who is always new and inventive when it comes to improvising solos. The man sure knows his way around a wah pedal.
He does it better than Kirk Hammett, that's for sure.
Mr ClassicMetal lol too true
Totally! Big band. Great melodic solos! Glad you added him as I was about to.
Goat
Yeah, no. He's not what Rick is talking about as a "second lead singer". He's a shy introverted person and lacks charisma that Rick describes. Sure he's a great guitar player, but not great stage presence.
John Frusciante and John Mayer were the reasons I started learning to play.
Same here
I took my son to Nashville to see John Mayer with Ben Folds opening and it was among the top five shows I've seen. He reminded me a lot of Zappa the way he worked his band., and he was very generous with the spotlight.
Jeff Beck is the only guy I've seen in recent years that is still pushing the envelope and his band to new places, even in fifty year old rock songs.
Matt Bellamy! He’s got great showman chops but also loud, massive guitar work and guitar solos. Only thing is Muse dabbles in lots of genres and not just straight guitar rock.
Totally agree!!
Seen them live and I absolutely agree. Definitely an underrated guitarist.
One of the last stars was Frusciante in the early 00s. His playing at Slane was everything described here.
Slane is the best thing RHCP did in their life.
@@aGabay Nah, there's la cigale 2006
Love the guy, but he never was big on solos - that's why he doesn't qualify for the ranks in this here video

@@magusking9215 he does. He was not big on album solos but on the stage. Oh boi
Matt Bellamy is why I bought a guitar. Also Jack White, John Frusciante, and Tom Morello.
You listed 3 of my top 5 all time guitarists! Great list! Matt is underrated too.
True
Matt Bellamy is a truly underated guitarist. Great solo's as well as a great stage presence.
Yes!!! JF! Matt! And Morello!!
I’ve seen Mayer live 4 times. He’s amazing. End of story ....
John 5
John Frusciante is a very popular guitarist, even among younger people. His solos aren't particularly technical or fast, but I think they are very melodic and "singable" (e.g. "Californication", "Scar Tissue", "Sir Psycho" and many other songs). Great video as always, Rick :)
And his backing vocals are world-class.
i hate to be the disagree guy but Mr Frusciante doesnt have a large following among young people. and that also depends on your definition of young. i love his playing, im 44 YsO now. every young person i know cant identify him by name. the guitar is, essentially, dead as of right now. can there be a resurrection? maybe. but it wont be until young people appreciate the value of music again.
I came here to suggest Frusciante. And there is a lot more to his work than the Chili Peppers. He's an amazing songwriter and his vocal harmonies and melodies are excellent.
He might not be top of the list today but mid to late 2000s he was certainly inspiring a lot of kids to pick up a strat
@@swirleynoise2424 *young people appreciate music, that's not the issue...
@@swirleynoise2424 lol get your head out of your ass
Dimebag Darrell is definitely a true guitar hero! Getcha pull!
Goddamn Electric right.
Correct.
Yeah well he's been dead for quite a long time
Imo, guitarists have started prioritizing technique over creativity and sounding good in the sense that, guitarists would rather write a 300 BPM Sweeping tapping song than a melodic / catchy kind of song. I'm not saying that you shouldn't learn technique; it's the contrary, I completely and fully support advancing technique; however, I don't think that a song should be based around technique, technique should be based around the song. Technique is the tool and music is the machine.
AC/DC springs to mind
Not necessarily true
Absolutely....couldn't have said it better. If you've written a great rock song and it showcases a guitar solo of sorts, it should always wind back into the song at some point and the song rocks on. Not the other way around; basing a song on the predominance of a guitar solo and then trying to construct some lyrics or whatever to follow along. There are some guitar 'greats' that did just this and in my estimation almost ruined rock in the late 80's early 90's. All about the laser light shows and the guitar solos......rock had lost it's blues roots.
Mayer and Frusciante are totally the guitar heroes of this generations
45-50 year olds of this generation ??
@@prashantkc169 like 2000s atleast🙃
Yeah Frusciante and Mayer are the last true guitar heroes.

@@jacobgwinn3219 billy strings I think is better than both.
Don't forget Dimebag Darrell in the nineties and early 00's, he made me and many others want to play guitar.
He certainly fits the bill. That lead guitar in Psycho Holiday... damn!🤘🏼
Many.
Hell yeah he did!
Mr ClassicMetal damn right and the fact that you said psycho holiday and I immediately heard it in my mind proves he was The last true guitar hero
I could agree that Dimebag might be the last of the guitar hero's.
Dimebag Darrell was a guitar hero in the 90's.
Guitar hero forever
Forever!
Beat me to it. How could ANYONE pass by Dime? And for some of us, a guitar hero in the 80s. He still had killer licks back in the glam days.
Dime was the last
Totally true, for me I think he is some sort of evolution of Eddie Van Halen, very creative and had a deep understanding of his gear and techniques to achieved his tone.
Matt Bellamy has that quality. Showman, amazing skill and musicality.
guitar antihero considering how many he's thrown lmao
Seen him live, he's amazing!
Came here to say this. He is Brian May and Freddie Mercury in one person.
Yes!
And one of the very last to mod his guitar in a total personal way...a fuzz integrated into the guitar...a midi touch pad connected to a digital processor...amazing and original!
Matt Bellamy from the more modern era
Also the 90s had Dimebag Darrel, Tom Morello, Billy Corgan & John Frusicante to name a few
Just wanna mention Guthrie Govan here. Though he isn't a "guitar hero", probably one of the greatest players in the history of the instrument.
Karthic Sathian, check out Matteo Mancuso if you like Guthrie
I put him in second place behind Shawn Lane for best guitarist of all time.
@@richardhowes4831 But Matteo Mancuso doesn't count cause he's not from Earth
@@Robinexs I'm starting to believe that.
actually Guthrie fits the definition of great player working with great songwriter when he works with Steven Wilson. The best Steven Wilson solo albums are still the one he made with Guthrie as a guitarist. Guthrie's solos at Drive Home, The Watchmaker, Regret #9 maybe are the best guitar solos I've ver heard. But I think Guthrie just doesn't fit in bands except for Aristocrats (because its an instrumental trios). Playing to crowds and selling records are just not his thing. I think he just loves music and doesn't care about to be a guitar hero playing to million crowds. We have John Mayer and Ed Sheeran for that today. Guthrie doesnt have to follow that way, he has his own musical way.
Mark Tremonti ...was one of the last guitar heros we've had. Excellent points on how it's the great SONGS that really turn guitar players into guitar stars.
Mark Tremonti is definitely more contemporary talent, it's unfortunate the bands he played in didn't carry him in such a light--but the dude's got chops for sure.
David DiMuzio who is that
Not a fan of Creed, but you're right about Tremanti
@@DeadbeatDadcore *cough cough*fuck creed*cough cough*
alter bridge are pretty fkn good though. i still dont know if theyre opening for the iron maiden concert im going to next year. fingers crossed
I just want to say that Omar Rodriguez Lopez doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. Pure energy in lives and so creative and different in all his music.
He’s awesome but no even close to being stadium popular
Hell yeah. Frances the Mute was such a mystery to me when I got it!
You can’t be wrong
People hate him for the use of tritonal intervals but for me is a cool guitarist
I just saw John Mayer in Seattle 2 days ago. He's very, very good. He's kind of a Hybrid of Clapton, Hendrix, and SRV but with more diverse skills. I think he's reached the SRV level personally. When he improvised, he was also playing a combination of classical Bach and SRV pentatonic stuff as an intro to 'Gravity'. I think he's a combo of all these guys with a very diverse skillset. He can play folk, blues, funk, and seems to be getting more into classical/jazz riffs too. I love his unique approach to songwriting too. "Stop This Train" was an instant classic when it came out.
I think what makes John Mayer so good is that he really knows his stuff. Like, I’ll be watching an interview and he’ll talk about how he can’t stop listening to Miles Davis, then, I’ll see a video of him doing a solo where he’ll put some of that Miles Davis influence in there. The dude is passionate and I think it really shows in his playing
Mark Tremonti - He's a bit understated in the "showmanship" category, but his chops and compositions are certainly just as good as any of the greatest guitarists ever.
New album too
His solo project is so underrated that's sad. None of these albums have a bad track in it to me, every melody is killing and i can sing by heart his freaking solos
And he currently plays with one of the finest rock vocalists alive, Myles Kennedy....who is also a phenomenal songwriter and guitarist in his own right!
Just posted the exact same comment... pretty ridiculous that Rick talks about internet sensations like Plini but never mentions Mark.
I was just going to say...yeah. He's not understated in showmanship, he fucking runs and solos just great. Myles is great too, but he also tours extensively with his own band, Tremonti, which literally makes him the gunslinger and the honey spitter both in those.
Oh im so happy you mentioned John Mayer. People put him aside cos he's kind of cheesy, but he's fantastic
He’s been doing a Jerry Garcia impersonation for 5 years now and it’s awesome
Nick Kentros miles ahead of Garcia though
I want to like Mayer and he is a great guitarist.. but I have yet to come across a song of his that speaks to me.
@@steverix8181 the first song i ever learned on guitar was “In Your Atmosphere,” live in LA version. I was 16 years old. In that same live album, his rendition of “I'm Gonna Find Another You” has three fantastic solos that I really appreciate. To preface: I'm not actually that into guitars and know it quite casually. I've said about myself that I play guitar...well enough for me to sing and write songs hahaha. But since quarantine I've gotten deeper into the guitar YT rabbit hole trying to learn more, and it's been keeping me sane 🤘
He likes writing music that pleases people, but he is an amazing musician. Cheesy music doesn't say anything about skills.
Couldn't agree more. Mayer is a legend. The most complete musician of this generation.

MATT BELLAMY.
If he's not a guitar hero, I don't know who is.
Absolutely! Thinking the same thing. HUGE PRODUCTION stadium tours worldwide and the guy shreds with the best of em while adding tons of flair. And his guitar work isn’t simple - he’s got truly complex stuff, not to mention he made that touchpad midi guitar famous
hes a guitar hero to me, but that genre of music isnt as popular as it used to be which makes me upset
Matt Bellamy doesn't consider himself a guitar hero, in interviews he gets genuinely embarrassed if anyone brings the subject up and maybe thats the problem?
GREAT musician, not a guitar hero though. My opinion though, not arguing.
I think Mr. Brightside was a huge hit with a lot of guitar too right, but idk if The Killers had solos. I'm sure Fall Out Boy gave Pete Wentz some. Jack White played big arenas with guitar solos. Prince.
People love hating on John, but the dude shreds and still gets in the pop charts.
When discussing modern day guitar hero's, surely John Frusciante deserves a mention?! Especially now that he's rejoined RHCP
Hes coming out with a solo album soon called maya as himself and not trickfinger
Totally agree!
Yeah definitely!
Yeah. John has the big hits and cool solos!
Good player but not in the "Guitar hero" category. He's like, 3rd tier.
I rarely hear Jeff Beck getting love around here. If anyone is curious, his last album Loud Hailer in 2016 was incredible. Considering how long he’s been playing and constantly changing his sound, he deserves all the credit in the world. Every other guitar player from his generation has fizzled out but his last album still sounds fresh. Choice track is “Pull It”
Yeah.... Killer album
Yeah I’ve heard it several times. Great record
Indeed! Jeff is the Man his technical skills are still insane today! Clapton went from Rock to Blues & back!, Page sort of got stuck in Zep by taking too much snow! Hendrix passed on so soon & we weren't able to see where he would end up? Beckola hardest working Dino ever! Went from Rock ,Jazz, Blues, Electronic, Swing & back to Rock, Here are a few of Jeff Best
Arsenio Hall '89 Slingshot, Letterman Mama said '99, Imelda May & Beck How high the Moon
I forgot who, but iirc, some big name guitarist was asked who is still innovating the guitar as much as it was back in the 70s and they said Jeff Beck.
zeppage4 might’ve been jimmy page
Current guitar hero - Derek Trucks. I don’t care about flash or speed, I like lead guitar that takes you on an emotional journey. The Allman Bros, imho raised the bar when you have more than one lead guitarist in a band. It was about the music, not about “me”. But it’s all subjective anyway. I like filet mignon and others like beef jerky. LOL
Kingfish has all the chops, he just needs the audience
Yessir
Kingfish is an awesome player.
Kingfish has so much potential, I can't wait to see where he goes.
Gary Clark Jr deserves some kind of honorable mention too even if he's more of a blues-type player. His Bright Lights solo from Crossroads is legendary
OMG YES!!!!!
Better than Mayer
Yep ... he’s got it!
One person that comes up for me is Matthew Bellamy. He's incredible live.
yeah, I agree on this one. Good guitarist, good singer, solid writer. Problem for me was he got far too florid in some of his vocal stylings. He really needed to reign that in., and a good producer might have said something.
still can't believe he covered Starlight on the channel, they have literally a hundred better songs
As a Muse fan, and judging on guitar ability, Matt was not very skillful, but very effective, because he is a master of riff writing.
I played in a UK battle of the bands in the late 90s and muse played in it. I remember him shredding quite a lot on an evh guitar. I don't think they won it.
Matt is the whole package.
For me, Josh Homme was one of the last guitar heroes. Great riffs, great solos, great melodies and great songwriting.
The "singing solo" theory is exactly why I love Jeff Beck, he could order drink from the bar with a guitar.
Jeff Beck is already a Guitar Hero and has been one for years.
@@pokerface8242 WADR Poker Face, I'm 53 years of age, and Jeff Beck has been around as a Guitar God since as far back as I can recall - Beck w/ Rod Stewart in The Jeff Beck Group back originally in 1967 - the year I was born!!! No biggy, just sayin'!

@@kozhikkaalan I don't think he could, the barman would say' judging by how you are slurring your words, I think you have already had enough mate.
"Cause We've Ended as Lovers" is a perfect example of that skill!
I love Alter Bridge. Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy, two in one band.
Mark is def a guitar hero.. Although AB isn't as popular in the states, he had huge success in Creed and AB is huge overseas
Miles Kennedy the guitar God? Are we talking about the same Miles Kennedy? Don't get me wrong he is an amazing musician, but definitely no guitar God. (in my opinion)
I’ve seen Tremonti live with Creed in a stadium, and a couple years later live with AlterBridge in a bar. Fabulous guitarist that I love to listen to. But sadly when Creed imploded his “reach” (using Rick’s word) crumbled with it.
I can appreciate their talent but Alter Bridge are so corny to me. All the ingredients are there but they have no edge whatsoever....more like Bon Jovi than actual metal.
@@Magere-Kwark did you see him playing guitar OUTSIDE AB? because he makes Tremonti look like a teen with a hello kitty guitar
Tom Morello, John Frusciante, Matt Bellamy are the three names that spring to mind as far as big crowds and flashy solos are concerned.
Deryck Reaburn-Jenkin , great mentions!
you're right but Muse are becoming more and more pop
@@nickn2794 Good point! The early Muse was much more into guitar than they are today.
@@nickn2794 I haven't listened to much of their more recent stuff but they can bring it live.
Your three names are exactly the same as mine
The real problem is today's music isn't about the music at all, its about the image, likes, shares and who you meet and collab with. Kids get told whats cool and what to listen to, there's no real discovery of taking a chance on a band anymore, most music is programmed, all flash and no substance. It'll happens in cycles though, people will wake up one day and wonder where all the good music had gone and start crafting their instruments again, just can't happen fast enough hahaha
If you are talking about pop music yeah, but popular music as a whole nah, it's still about music but instruments are now in the back seat.
Lmao cause EVH definitely wasn't trying to get people to enjoy (like) and share (profit from) his music. And he definitely didn't want to do that Michael Jackson collab.
if you mean todays "popular" music, then you might be right. But if we are talking about guitar orientated music, then you might be clinging onto to some out dated ways of finding decent music to listen to man. The radio stations are what they used to be , put in a little effort and go looking for some good music, you'll find it, it's out there, just not on the radio like it used to be...
PS: The "I like solos that I can sing" section brought me back to the early days of me learning electric guitar. My beloved teacher told me that, he said that a great solo is not the one with the most notes on it. But rather, a melody so memorable that may stick in the soul of whoever listens to it, to the point it could be sung by anyone. You rock, Rick. You're the best.
Jason Isbell said something really cool recently concerning guitar playing.."Tell me something, don't show me something"
A solo should be a song within a song
Interesting point. I saw an interview with Eric Clapton years ago and he pretty much said that when he played solos he was 'singing' without words.
@@mikejones-vd3fg Some of Yngwie's solos are over the top, but he has many that are epic. With beautiful, memorable melodies, and that inimitable vibrato that makes those notes sing.
@@Symphonicrockfran I think you're talking about none other than Michael Schenker. 🙂
Dimebag Darrell of Pantera would easily take the spotlight with his epic solo's. So much so that I feel Phil Anselmo would get a little jealous and pissed off.
As soon as I saw this title, I immediately thought "It's gotta be Mayer" and man, am I glad you said it. I would also suggest Matt Bellamy from Muse
I also straight away thought of Matt Bellamy of Muse, Muse wouldn’t be Muse without Matts guitar playing.
yes, I'd agree but Muse are becoming more and more pop
How can you miss Matt Bellamy he is even in the video game
Yeah, i do not play guitar really, apart from completely random strumming, but from my little knowledge i also figured ot would be Mayer, and i was so satisfied when Rick mentioned him, i felt like the goat.
Nico unfortunately, there’s so many people that haven’t heard any of his music
In my opinion, there's such a lack of guitar in the current metal, that when bands want to focus on guitar it's almost like they're trying to overcompensate for the lack of the instrument and go over the top with what they do. Plini, Animals as Leaders etc., sometimes add complexity just for the sake of being complex.
Seems unkind to assume it's complexity for complexity's sake.
I'd argue John Frusciante is semi-close to guitar hero. He has showmanship, iconic solos, great at improvising, sells out stadiums.

Matthew Bellamy in the early Muse albums was a total guitar hero. More impressively, he could play piano to the same level, in concerts playing the solo for "Sunburn" on piano instead of guitar.
Eric Clapton annointed him in an interview, he said that he thought that Mayer was the best guitar player out there. Also, B.B King and Buddy Guy welcome him as a "Made Guy". I can't believe how underated still is Prince as a guitar hero...
He was an amazing player and his songwriting and voice were so strong and such a force that when people talk about him they end up saying he was an amazing musician because there wasn’t just one aspect that outshined the rest, he was amazing at each aspect of his work, for example Eddie Van Halen is an amazing guitarist and a decent singer/ songwriter but his guitar performance is for sure his strong suit. My point is your know for your stand out thing but tell me what princes standout was? His voice? Songwriting? His performance on his instrument? He was so good at each aspect you just say he was an amazing musician. Can’t box that guy in haha
With respect, I don't agree that he was an underrated guitarist, there's a reason why his performance on While my Guitar Gently Weeps has nearly 58 million views.
Rick has said this before, the only reason he doesnt put Prince, ACDC, etc. in his videos is because they get taken down instantly. He doesnt mind them tkaing the money from the vid, but if the video taken down he finds it ridiculous so he simply avoids it
Prince was just sooo good at everything it’s hard for non- guitarist to know exactly how good he was.
guitar guy Lol sorry man I should have just read your response first.
Prince had solos.
Prince was the greatest, yet Rick Beato never mentions him.
Prince was a great guitarist, could shine on his own or improvise in a group of others like the My Guitar Gently Weeps set he did before he died.
Prince was also an 80's guy so not really relevant to the "who's next" argument is he.....that and he's no longer here obviously!
Fenster He mainly avoids prince because he cannot show any prince footage bc of copyright
I was thinking this throughout the video, he should definetly make a video dedicated to him.
RHCP is a band with some amazing solos. Really melodic. John Frusciante is a god when it comes to small very effective solo.
I agree . Frusciante is amazing with his RHCP work , but also he is a LOT overrated over here. Especially in the internet community. Still love him tho.

I think John Petrucci was legit a guitar hero, especially during the 2000s. Dream Theater is perhaps too popular, but Petrucci actually managed to influence people.
Maybe Rick doesn't listen to DT. Songs like The Best of Times, The Spirit Carries On, etc definitely has some tasteful and singable solo. Altho Petrucci wasn't known for theatrical playing, he's inspired lots of people to pick up guitar.. and in some case made them give up entirely lol
@@Voltaphonic nah IMO Petrucci is the embodiment of "I have a passion so I need to practice my ass off in order to reach the level I want to" The early stories of Dream Theater/Majesty during and after Berklee are super inspiring to me.
Petrucci is incredible but he's not very known outside of the guitar community.
This isn't about skills only. It's about having the whole package where you transcend just being the lead guitar guy.
In recent years, Matt Bellamy of Muse seems to fit the template quite well. Popular rock band with a big following, and he's an excellent singer and guitarist (who does play solos).
He does play solos but when I think of him, I don’t necessarily think of his soloing
Some of the guitar players that rose to fame after 90's:
Jeff Loomis, Chris Broderick, Chuck Schuldiner, Dimebag Darrell, Tom Morello, Bumblefoot, Guthrie Govan, Michael Romeo, Alexi Laiho, John 5...
And none of them are "guitar hero" types. Some amazing players, yes. I think a lot of people are missing the point, which is equally amazing.
@@jollyvoqar195 You should go watch some Dime/Pantera
Guthrie put in some real solid solos on Steven Wilson's "The Raven that Refused to Sing and Other Stories" and "Hand.Cannot.Erase" albums. Solos from "Drive Home" or "Routine" as examples.
@@steppenhenge thank you, sir. Dimebag was a guitar god, technically, which outranks hero but that's not my point. Dimebag fuckin rules!!!! *airshreds
Tom Morello definitely rose to fame in the 90s. That's when RATM was active and big.
A lot of Frusciante love here. I think people are so excited by his return not just because it will be classic peppers but because there will be a modern throwback on the scene. Someone who solos with emotion, feeling, intent and virtuosity.
Matt Bellamy? Huge worldwide arena tour, completely synonymous with on stage theatrics and playing guitar? Muse songs still have guitar solos, I think there was at least 5 on the newest album, and the old ones are still loved to this day
I hate the last album, but Drones is filled with good riffs and solos. Psycho, Reapers, THE GLOBALIST...
The point is having a guitarist that makes you want to play guitar, I don't think Matt does that. His solos don't really catch a lot of people. There's way for attention to his voice.
Came here to say this... Matt Bellemy for sure
Muse deserves so much more acclaim
@@abcrx32j tell that to every guitarist at my school learning the plug in baby riff... Well 15 years ago anyway!
We still have Mayer and Slash selling out stadiums.
Slash hasn’t been in the charts for 25 years and no one is going to see John mayer for his guitar playing
Orochi C agree ...J. Mayer is overrated as a guitarist.
the guitarist from the band The Silver Thinkers is awesome, unique solos and riffs !!
Except John Mayer isn't known for any of his guitar solos.
@@Cakebattered 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
John Mayer managed to keep the blues feel with a pop flavor, that's something we don't see so often...
Crazy. I went to say John mayer, and right there at the top was your comment.
Idk if he just means hard rock, metal. As thats most of his examples. Oh my God he did just say john msyer haha. I was weighting this and he said it.
@@monkeymindbananas9550 i think everyone that has heard john mayer play would guess the same.
John Mayer wanted to be the Eric Clapton of this generation. I think he's come as close as anyone else.
@@DroneCorpse He didn't want to be the clapton though, I hear a lot of SRV and Hendrix in his guitar playing, not a lot of clapton
Matt Bellamy is probably the newest Guitar Hero in my opinion, he sold out Rome Olympic Stadium in 2013, sold out Wembley Stadium in 2007 and recently sold out in France in 2019. He's also constructed some great solos such as Reapers, Blockades, Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, Psycho etc... The problem with his solos is that their a little bit too simple (the structure of Hysteria's solo is built on two parts that kind of repeat, the first part was repeating itself a bit too much and the 2nd part kind of did the same but they managed to make the songs solo sound amazing) but they sound great nonetheless.
Gary Clark Jr is one of my modern favorites. His solos are so good
John Frusciante.
Definitely an honorable mention. :)
For sure, i wrote and half second later saw your coment.
Yeah, I'm glad this is the first comment because he's absolutely a guitar hero.
He long since ascended to Guitar Jesus.
EXACT, I WAS SCREAMING THAT THE WHOLE VIDEO
Matt Bellamy from Muse, Tom Morello, Jack White, how did these guys not get a mention?
Jack White? Are you serious?🤨
@@MrClassicmetal Matt Bellamy for sure!
@@MrClassicmetal jack white has some really inventive guitar playing on not only the white stripes but his solo work, theirs alot more to jack white then seven nation army or the early white stripes catalog
jack white is an amazing song writer. not an amazing guitar player by any means
Morello definitely stands alone
Genuinely surprised Matt Bellamy from Muse wasn’t given a mention
Derek Trucks, Love listening to his unique slip sliding playing style.
The Tededchi Trucks band is undeniably one of the better bands out there right now.
I couldn't agree more, I was lucky enough to see them live and the show was amazing!
Oh helllllll yes
@@chinook6394 Yes!!!
Top of the food chain, no doubt in my mind.
I'm a guitarist, I'm not the best shredder on earth nor got the sick chops. But I write a lot of songs with no vocals, I usually use guitar as the leading voice. I'm starting to sing myself and it's pretty great, I am in full acceptance that I as a guitar player should adapt to what's happening right now in music. And this video really boosted my confidence and complimented my direction in music.
Thank you as always Rick.
Would love to see more content like this
Dude, same here! I've never been able to play fast, so had to focus instead on being melodic, that's why David Gilmore is my fav guitar player.
Very true: "All the chops in the World don't mean anything if someone can't sing your solo". 7:07
Yeah ... like every One could sing the solo of Stairway to Heaven
BS
@@SwampEye1 I can, you`d mumble through the fast runs and everything if you actually tried to SING it at the correct speed, but it`s memorable enough that I can just think of it pretty much note for note without having listened to it in a while.
agree, for example brian may made some easily singable solos crowd loves to sing
There's definitely something to this; I think of Page, Clapton, Gilmour, Slash, etc. but then again, I'm probably not singing an Eddie Van Halen solo (thought it's still regularly blasting from my car stereo). There's more than one way to reach an audience, and I think the songcraft connection is maybe even more powerful. After all, who would care about Gilmour's solos in "Comfortably Numb" if not for the song that frames those ideas?
As a huge John Mayer fan I was so happy to hear Rick say „Except one, John Mayer“
Adam Jones, dude is probably the most underrated guitar player out there.
Frusciante and Mascis are two current hero’s of mine.
Yess
I love Frusciante but he's out of the game. I know he's 'back' but before the Peppers release something or go on tour his reach is unsignificant. Not saying his music isn't incredibly good but that's not what this video is about
Same here
Beato can you do one on Mascis please? Can you get him on and ask him to plug in all his big muffs into one of your amps?
YES
Theres so many guitar players that I can choose:
Syn Gates, John Fruciante, Matt Bellamy (atleast a lot of his earlier stuff) and John Mayer.
But those guys are old, they are not "the next" anything

I think John Mayer and John frusciante are some of the most modern guitar hero’s. Then there’s kingfish and Eric gales who are insane guitar players but aren’t as popular
Slash is the last Guitar Hero in the sense of Legendary persona, timeless solos, sound and RnR lifestyle.
I think Christone "Kingfish" Ingram is the future.
For sure
the guitarist from the band The Silver Thinkers is awesome, unique solos and riffs !!
I like his singing tone more than everything else honestly
I would say John Frusciante also, all the way from late 80's to 2010 and now back again :)
Hey Rick. Have you heard of Marcus King, from the Marcus King Band? He is has the potential to be a guitar hero. He is amazing at the guitar, and a great singer. If any of you havent heard of him i recommend checking him out!.
Yeah I discovered him recently, he's good
Amazing player and singer! I've been listening a lot to him, Dan Patlansky and Philip Sayce!
YES! Marcus is an incredible player, singer, and songwriter. I'd say he's deserving of a what makes this song great, I'm sure Rick would love his writing. It's so rare to see someone with such insane chops in addition to the versatility to play nearly any genre. Probably the one of the only people with the balls to play a Sabbath song and an Ella Fitzgerald song in the same show AND totally kill both haha. Plus the dude is only 24 and just keeps getting better.
Marcus the King, as JB calls him. Saw him down in Mexico, Marcus King and Jimmy Herring going off on the same stage. Incredible stuff
trym1nator love Marcus King. That boy can play. Have you also heard Billy Strings?
man, SRV has got to be one of the best guitarists that ever graced this Earth
He was an alien. Beyond human.
He was the greatest to me
I think the last guitar heroe was Omar Rodriguez-Lopez... got his own way !! Saw him in a trio with Deantony Park and Alderete in a festival. One of the best performance ever seen... in the last 10 year at least..
Derek Trucks is a modern day guitat hero, when he tourned in Claptons band they were improved a lot!
best allmans show i saw was derek & jimmy herring on guitar, probably '99. razor sharp playing & fresh takes on classics, whole band was hot.
The first name that came to mind when I saw the title. Derek is the man. I see Tedeschi Trucks every year in concert. Bummed it got delayed.
Trucks is certainly amazing.. definitely one of the best out there today
Good call, he's amazing!
Word!
For what David Gilmour lacks in speed, he makes up for in feel, emotion, exquisite bends, and note choice. Gilmour is a one in a million guitar player.
Better than one in a million.. one of a kind!
I don’t think he lacked speed. He just chose to walk instead of running.
Gilmore is god-tier
Really, a lot more than one in a million... I'm not sure a more soulful guitarist has ever existed.
@@ReaperBit exactly
"I like solo's I can sing." Where does that leave Tom Morello?
I came to make sure this name was here.
I like to (try to) sing Tom Morello solo's as voice warm-up, works okay and it's more fun than your standard vocal chops
Although his politics aren't for everyone, Tom is for sure a guitar hero, dude has come up with some of the sickest riffs ever.
Tom's guitar playing was very innovative, at least in his solos.
You can't sing it, but everyone can kinda de-do-de-do the solo for Bulls on Parade.
You forgot to mention Slash. He's not a super shredder but his solos were a song inside each song that everyone liked to sing along.

A ton of Guitar Heroes were missing. I'd even include Prince in that group. On the flip, I'd never include John Mayer in that group simply because he has not a single solo in his songs fans commonly refer to, unlike every other guitarist in the video .
@@Cakebattered His intial albums, probably because he started out as an acoustic-pop musician, didn't have many solos. But Continuum to present day stuff have memorable solos. His solo in 'Magnolia' is my favourite, not too complex but very memorable.
Matt Bellamy of Muse has put out a lot of cool solos in the 2000's and 2010's
No doubt, Matt is an effin’ rock god, but what amazes me about him is watching him absolutely command and own a stadium filled with 60,000 fans...All. By. Himself. His combination of singing, guitar playing, keyboards, songwriting and his, “F*ck it, I’m King of the World” attitude while performing puts him way above simple “guitar god” status, in my humble opinion.
