Did Nick say he didn't like the flashback stuff & thought there should be less of it? I thought the opposite. I think if this movie was firmly set during Ancient Greece/Mesopotomia/Egypt days it would've been much more interesting. Every MCU project out there is present day, no one else other than _Eternals_ right now can show us the MCU's ancient past.

I completely agree with Kevin on this one. I think that this movie is only going to get better in time, and I absolutely loved it when I saw it this afternoon
The villains were easily the biggest letdown for me because they squandered two very good conceptual antagonist by trying to do both. Deviants becoming cognizant of what's happened to them and how the Celestials made them and now want them exterminated? Great dig deeper on that, especially considering the Eternals are in a similar boat of being used. Ikaris being a blindly loyal soldier, but also still loving his family and not wanting to hurt them, also great show that more too. Instead we got both half assed with not a lot of time dedicated to them and in the end one is literally used as a random distraction for Thena and the other was short changed to his inner conflict was less impactful. I know re-writing a movie after seeing it is boring and pointless, but they had a really good opportunity to make both work with changes. Have cognizant Deviant show up earlier and drive the plot and story forward. Have them fight it and it reveals the truth about Arishem and Ikaris betrayal, causing them to question what they want to do. Then go forward with that and them individually coming to terms with whether they agree or not. Or just commit to one enemy completely because there's a great story individually as well. Overall I wasn't a big fan, it was alright, but it also took a lot of big swings too so I respect it for that.
I really enjoyed the movie. There was so much heart and i loved the characters, feeling sympathy for both Thena and Sprite. I also enjoyed the moral complexity of the main conflict. I enjoyed the action scenes, but the relationships and overarching conflict was what i enjoyed most.
Critics are out of their mind!! Rotten at 48%? Fortunately the audience score is still above 80% (for the moment at 84%), this movie is a masterpiece, the cosmology is so interesting and the scenes are epic and amazing.
*Spoilers ahead! This is your one warning!* I really liked the fight between Makkari and Ikaris but the whole time I was thinking: 'Wow. Imagine if DC could do this with The Flash and Superman.' Like it was just on a whole other level than any fight scene between superpowered characters in a DC movie. The Ikaris VS everyone fight was almost Infinity War levels of action in terms of how we got to see a big group fighting all out with their unique powers and approaches to dealing with things. It was very cool.
I thought the same especially when i thought about makkari. I thought she was the best use in a movie of the "fast character" id ever seen cuz often the movie makers just try really hard to think of something else that character can be doing in action sequences and i just loved the eay makkari moved in this one.
Is this the first time we've heard Nick's Mario Party strategy / philosophy on life uttered in no uncertain terms? "The only way I win is if everybody else loses." 😂 Additionally, my take on the Batman & Superman nods is that they're paying homage to Jack Kirby's influence in both realms, and the fact that Eternals is basically Marvel's take on a Justice League team, at least in this iteration.
About the thing with Kingo, it's interesting that Kumail himself posted on tt about that, an interview Chloe gave talking about it. I think it gave the story more meaning and depth
I saw this last night and was absolute gripped every second. LOVED it. Easily a top 10 MCU movie for me. I can understand why some people won’t vibe with it though, but I also don’t understand why the critic reviews are so negative.
I loved this movie and loved how they made it open up so many more doors. The only thing I’ll ding the movie for was the mid credit scene because that just felt out of place. The effects and visuals were incredible and seeing a celestial is something you need to experience on the big screen.
I think it’s funny how kit Harrington is the black knight in the mcu, and in GoT he was Jon snow who was part of the nights watch who also was associated with the black😂
It wasn’t a Red Herring, they just wanted to use the sentient deviant as Thena’s revenge side-plot. Both of their goals were aligned at that point, they both wanted to stop Icarus, but Thena needed revenge for Gilgamesh after they used so much of the move and her arc setting up that side plot. All the time she spent being compromised would’ve been for nothing if they didn’t pay it off in some way. If he hadn’t killed Gilgamesh to gain his sentience than he could’ve been a cool ally in the end.
As someone that’s particularly critical of the MCU I’ve always felt none of the films are bad they are consistently okay, but with Eternals while I respected the ambition it just was a wet noodle for me. I didn’t feel for any of the characters and they all felt underdeveloped and emotionally similar. That said I appreciate the visuals of this film, you can feel Zhao’s presence here and they actually shot on film which was a treat to see.
really liked the movie, i ended up liking all there characters and there motivations. i loved the action, especially since there were 10 characters i assumed most would be killed off so it helped the fights feel dangerous. and i even liked the deviants since they got around the problems that alot of MCU have where the hero fights a color swap version of themselves.
I thought the conflict was interesting. The discussion of let nature take its course or if you can prevent something should you. Like the planet will be destroyed but billions of other life will come from it. But the have the ability to possibly stop it, and should they do it but stop “nature” from making billions of lives down the road just to save humans. It’s a real conversation to be had with current day.
It's pretty difficult to get hard cosmology concepts to stick with audiences I imagine, but I actually really liked the emotional journey they used to play it out. This was not a good movie in my opinion, but the best parts revolved around these moral dialogues. Glad we have heavy-hitting movies like this one and Avengers to encourage people to think big in their daily lives.
As someone whose much more interested in the weird cosmic side of Marvel this movie is a big hit for me. I loved it and can't wait to see it again soon
Man, I loved it too (for the most part) but I’m still trying to figure out exactly how this will fit in with the rest of the MCU moving forward. I also knew it was divisive but I didn’t realize quite how divisive. Seems like it’s a film people love or hate, not much in-between.
This was my feelings with it. I liked it and loved certain aspects but it feels like it could have been 2 movies. I am not going to pretend to know how to make that work with the marvel schedule or even how to make 2 movies out of it and make the first movie flow correctly but at times this movie felt a bit scattered. Solid, loved the universe and history of the MCU earth building, would have liked to get to know some of the characters more. Would put it in the B Teir of Marvel movies and be ready for it to get better as more movies come out and reference back to things introduced in this movie.
I watched Eternals last night on D+ and after watching first half of this in review I decided to watch it again... you guys really hype me up! thank you :)
SPOILERS . . . . I don't know, man I just feel indifferent about this movie. Don't really care about it either way. My problem is that I just don't buy the information that was given to me. Like, Arishem says he lost control of the deviants, don't buy it at all. You're this fucking all powerful, god-like being and you couldn't take them out yourself? He literally just comes to Earth himself in some black hole warp wormhole and just takes three eternals and dips. He just takes them with no problem. Why couldn't he just come to Earth and take the Deviants that had evolved and taken them out? Also, he created eternals specifically to take out the deviants who had evolved, why would you give the eternals free will who would be able to turn against you? Why doesn't he just make them literal robots who do one thing? Also, when the eternals killed the deviants the first time, why did Arishem take so God damn long to call them back home? I guess you could say there were still deviants left. But like, there were deviants frozen in ice? Really? None of the eternals had any idea about this in 7000 years? Don't buy it. Just don't. There are aalll these other eternals apparently on other planets who've been hatching celestials, and one thing I'm curious about is if none of the other eternals betrayed Arishem. Like, does this shit happen all the time, or was this the first time? Arishem is just really inefficient at this aspect of his job, bro. Lmaaaooo. When it said the Eternals would return, I kinda just didn't care and am not excited to see them again in future movies. I didn't really connect with any of them, except funny enough Kit Harrington's character, and he wasn't even in the shit. LOOOOL. To be fair, I just like Kit Harrington so there's that. The deviants and the consciousness? Fucking worthless. What a waste of time. That dude and all that amounted to nothing. Also, question. So do the celestials ACTUALLY give a shit about life, or is their sole purpose to create more celestials? Or is that just Arishem's purpose? Fuck it. Who even cares. I don't, personally. This movie was just kinda disappointing for me. I'd love to actually love it, but I don't, and I don't necessarily dislike it either. I enjoyed the visuals, the action was awesome, but unfortunately I did find myself bored. Reason being is because there are so many of these eternals, and I don't particularly care for any of them, so when stuff is happening I was just like, eh. Whatever, I guess. 🤷♂️ There that's it. 😅😂
Crazy theory I had about Ikaris' finale: The death is IMPLIED. Knowing that they're robots, WHAT IF he melted his exterior and thus became... The MCU's Silver Surfer?
This movie is cinema. My favorite movie of the year. This movie generally surprised me with what the film did. Didn’t do the cliche superhero plot and my eyes were glued to the screen the whole time. The size of Arishem the Judge was jaw dropping. 10/10
Just starting the video but wanted to jump in before and say i just got home from seeing it and I actually enjoyed it a lot! It’s not one of the best Marvel movies but it’s not bad at all. Pacing was a little off but other than that i really liked the different characters and i love how much this movie sets up more crazy shit in the MCU! The future is looking great and I can’t wait! Excited to see what you guy’s thought.
I had some problems with inconsistency in the MCU, but the main issue I had was the bad storytelling. I felt like the movie was both rushed and too slow at the same time. It was lacking in emotion and character development and it didn't have any clear villain or a protagonist I could relate to. The movie made the potential world ending event feel like a big "meh". I was actually rooting for the deviants because I understood their motivation. The same could not be said for the Eternals.
I was thinking under Dr. Strange as well. The movie handled a lot of things very well and fumbled a few of em. Over all enjoyed the movie but I just wish Kro was handled better.
I got to this one late but Andy and I are 100% on the same page Love this series! Makes every MCU movie so much more enjoyable knowing I can come straight to this after
SPOILERS*** I hated the sentient deviant storyline, it was so pointless and went absolutely nowhere. They could have cut that out of the movie and it would've been way better for it. The main storyline was actually way more compelling and they shoehorned in this terrible character just for a few action scenes.
Agreed. They could've had the absorbing thing never exist and only have them there for the sake of; 1. The Eternal's Existence and 2. Ikaris' scape goat. After the big reveal they could've finished them off, but even more than that I wish that they did something meaningful with the character. Hopefully, since Deviants aren't exclusive to earth, it comes back in a big way in a sequel.
Better yet have Thena fight it long enough to show that she's beginning to heal from her illness and gain the upper hand in the fight, but before the finishing blow the Uni mind begins and that includes the deviant bc they absorbed 2 Eternals. There it empathizes with The Eternal's, and once Sersi has turned the Celestial to stone, the deviant sprouts wings and leaves the planet to liberate more of it brethren on other planets.
@@deshaunfortune912 I feel like they got in their own heads about the generic bad guy punching bag trope and decided to craft a storyline out of it but then just ran out of time and it came to such an abrupt and unsatisfying ending. Your second reply is what I thought was going to happen! I really thought the deviant would realize that they've seen the truth now and fight with them and then go off on its own journey. Such a huge missed opportunity.
I really liked this movie. It wasn’t perfect. I liked all of the characters for the most part but some of the writing was off. Like, I get that they are trying to teach the audience the characters names but in a normal conversation when people are talking, you don’t end a statement or question with the person’s name. EX: “I can’t believe you’re doing this, KINGO” because remember his name is Kingo… in case you forgot. But other than that, I liked the plot, the celestial stuff was sick, the comedy was hit or miss like the rest of the MCU but it does land pretty frequently. A fun time! Of the same caliber as a Doctor Strange or AntMan, and that’s impressive considering the number of characters. last note is that I really like Barry Keogan’s acting. And I was impressed with Kumail’s because the trailer made me think I’d hate him but he was probably my favorite of the group. Oh and the super speed power in this was rad.
I think it’s really interesting that we get a Superman AND Batman shoutout in this movie. Historically I think the only time marvel has ever mentioned DC was in a literal Superman/Spider-Man crossover.
I think he would have wanted to kill them… because the deviants would have killed people which would have meant that the celestial wouldn’t be able to emerge
I totally dug it. Im glad we are finally getting into this crazy cosmic world. This is the first marvel movie I felt i was the only understanding what was going on at the post scenes. I get the criticism of to much exposition, and I definitely believe if this was a 8 epsiode hour long series that leads into a movie. Than at least the movie wouldnt be weighed down by the back stories and exposition setup of the Eternals.
_Eternals_ will be like _The Thing_ from 1982 starring Kurt Russell: critics of the time hated it, audience was divisive... and then decades later the movie is considered pretty good by a new generation who can't fathom how the previous generation genuinely seemed to think it was bottom of the barrel trash
It really makes absolutely no sense to me how so many critics gave more negative reviews for this movie than Thor 2. And yet audiences score it so high. I get that it’s not for everyone but seriously it doesn’t deserve this amount of negativity. However, given how so many countries around the world are banning this movie because it depicts a gay married man as one of the main characters and how this is also the most diverse cast of any Marvel movie yet, maybe that is the actual reason. I mean RT confirmed that a lot of “fans” review bombed this movie before it came out because it depicted a gay man as a main character.
It’s sad that people still can’t be tolerant of others. Like, yikes. The review scores seem way low. I’m not saying this should be in the 90s, but at least low 70s/high 60s. It’s a beautiful film in many respects. Thor 2 is absolute trash.
@@teddyholiday8038 I believer that if you make people laugh, you can do anything in a movie. Although I don't remember Thor 2 being funny either. It was such a poorly written movie.
I'm shocked none of them recognized Mahershala Ali's voice at the end. That was literally the most exciting part of the movie for me. I didn't know *or care about Harry Styles.
I do agree that there were certainly questionable moments in this movie. The time jumps are by far my biggest complaint, I wasn't a fan of the frequency and how the narrative was structured. The deviants also just kind of felt like cannon fodder for the sake of advancing the plot. Normally I wouldn't really consider this a complaint, as it's a superhero movie. However, they built up the "alpha" deviant quite a bit and I felt like that plot thread went absolutely nowhere. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie overall. The characters and cast were fantastic. I loved learning about the Eternals and the Celestials. The "family dynamic," was so enjoyable to me. I can't wait to see what they do with these characters in the future, especially in the wake of that final sequence and the post-credits scene. I don't think it's quite as good as Shang-Chi, but I do think it is severely underrated from a critical standpoint.
I really liked this movie a lot. There were a lot of characters and id say for the most part it balances them well. For sure a couple of them could have had some more time, but the epic scale of this movie is the standout and they make it work within the mcu. Im excited for the future of what this movie is setting up
Can’t tell if I missed it, but the fact they didn’t bring up that this film soft-introduced Blade is gobsmacking to me. That seems like a GET HYPE moment if there ever was one
DC Comics exists in the Marvel Comics as comic books and Marvel Comics exists in DC Comics as comic books, So I liked them finally reference that people in the MCU read DC comic books. This whole movie reminded me of an alt-world Justice League with a Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman and kinda Green Lantern, and I think they knew this so they were like "Look, we know you're going to see the similarities so we might as well add a reference or two." The end where Ikaris flew into the sun felt very on the nose because of the "Icarus" myth but also very apropos because of the Superman similarities.
This movie had a lot of cool moments, and I really enjoyed the humor, mainly because it helped with the pacing and subpar writing. The middle of this movie is such a slog and much of the acting and dialogue missed the mark for me. Even with lowered expectations I found myself disappointed. EDIT: Kumail Najiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and Ma Dong Seok were the best parts, they had real personality and moments to shine, even if we only got some top layer development.
The RT score is baffling to me. I think it has pacing issues and A LOT going on, but it’s pretty damn good. The movie is gorgeous, extremely well acted, and the action scenes were shot very well. I think the ensemble is handled well for the most part and characters have tons of heart. The humor felt genuine and natural, and THE twist was well done. I felt for these characters. I do think the deviants are just pointless but I was expecting that. It’s different and tonally more mature. More positives than negatives for me. SPOILERS: The Icarus twist makes him one of the better villains of the MCU. I loved his final scene with Sersi, where he finally understood and felt what Ajak was talking about when she said “humanity changed me.” Very similar to Omni-Man from Invincible. He wasn’t a mustache-twirling villain. He let his beliefs and ideology blind him, which is also great subtext for today’s world about religion.
I thought the movie was visually stunning as far as cinematography goes…but as far as it being entertaining and well written I’d say they didnt quite do as well as they could have.
Tim's thoughts on Superman being in the MCU is so weird to me. Superheroes didn't exist in the MCU until around the 2010's to the public. So are superheroes just not gonna exist in the 1930s when Superman was created? In real life we have firefighters, doctors, serial killers, lawyers, etc. But we still get fiction based on completely unrelated, fictitious characters. I don't see it as a massive stretch that the MCU wouldn't have Superman comics because Iron man exists.
The movie reminded me of Ago of Ultron; there is A LOT packed in, at times the story was bloated by just how much they were trying to stuff in that would branch off into individual stories, but overall pretty good movie that will become more important and appreciated over the next couple years
I hope there is a Eternals 2 because I really enjoyed this movie a lot and I’m really really hoping ikiras is still alive because having a superman esk character in the MCU would be so cool
SPOILER!!!!!!! . . . . why did they never explain the main monster thing. It is just killed and never explained. It feels like they wanted it to be the main enemy but changed their minds half way through production.
I just saw this movie on Disney+ and its clear how little anyone involved in the production cared about making even a half-decent movie. Half-baked plot, bored acting and dialogue seemingly taken from a middle-school play. It... looked nice, I suppose? Despite being rather drab. Worst MCU production so far, and the only real stinker they've had so far.
Makkari using sonic booms as a weapon was SICK

I really enjoyed the movie. There was so much heart and i loved the characters, feeling sympathy for both Thena and Sprite. I also enjoyed the moral complexity of the main conflict. I enjoyed the action scenes, but the relationships and overarching conflict was what i enjoyed most.
meh
Eros/Starfox appearing in Thor: Love & Thunder is my guess. Seems like the perfect place for his kind of comic reputation to be ;)
Critics are out of their mind!! Rotten at 48%? Fortunately the audience score is still above 80% (for the moment at 84%), this movie is a masterpiece, the cosmology is so interesting and the scenes are epic and amazing.
*Spoilers ahead! This is your one warning!*
I really liked the fight between Makkari and Ikaris but the whole time I was thinking: 'Wow.
In regards to your spoiler, imagine what they could do with X-men in action.
"The only way I win is if everybody else loses." 😂
Additionally, my take on the Batman & Superman nods is that they're paying homage to Jack Kirby's influence in both realms, and the fact that Eternals is basically Marvel's take on a Justice League team, at least in this iteration.
The rankings of the movies need to be redone into the tier list as well… it’s too many movies to maintain a “what’s best, what’s worst?”
About the thing with Kingo, it's interesting that Kumail himself posted on tt about that, an interview Chloe gave talking about it. I think it gave the story more meaning and depth
One thing about what Tim said regarding Arishem judging earth. Arishem’s full name Arishem the Judge. He is the judge character among the Celestials.
I popped off so hard on the final post credits. I immediately recognised the voice and went insane!
1:50:49 is such a good moment. God I love Andy
I saw this last night and was absolute gripped every second. LOVED it. Easily a top 10 MCU movie for me. I can understand why some people won’t vibe with it though, but I also don’t understand why the critic reviews are so negative.
People are different but yes top 2 marvel film for me
Spoiler Alert!!!!!
HOLY SHIT!!! The Ebony Blade!!!!! and the intro of Blade!!!!
I laughed at your dumb finger blasting joke. Dam it!
Really fair review 👍🏼
Hot take: Eternals is about the philosophical clash of utilitarianism and humanism. Am I looking too deep into this comic book blockbuster? NOPE
1:43:25 Andy was fed up before the conversation even started. 😂😂😂
I kinda think it would be best to break the MCU rankings into Pre and Post Endgame.
This movie was pretty solid. Potentially could have been better as 2 movies, but still very good as it is.
At the theatre I'd say that 20% of the jokes worked for the majority of the attendees and 70% of the jokes worked for these 2 guys sitting next to me.

Preach my man! The movie was a fucking snore.
Spot on.
i just want to see the scene where the bus driver tries to explain to his boss what happened to the bus...
Crazy theory I had about Ikaris' finale:
The death is IMPLIED. Knowing that they're robots, WHAT IF he melted his exterior and thus became... The MCU's Silver Surfer?
Bro...
Nick: they die and go green… Kevin: White? Nick:..Blue?…
I was thinking under Dr. Strange as well. The movie handled a lot of things very well and fumbled a few of em. Over all enjoyed the movie but I just wish Kro was handled better.
I just want to point out that next year MCU In Review (and by extension, In Review) will be 5 years old.
Again, I love everyone in the group but Kevin needs to let people get their point through before jumping in
I got to this one late but Andy and I are 100% on the same page
Love this series! Makes every MCU movie so much more enjoyable knowing I can come straight to this after
SPOILERS***
I hated the sentient deviant storyline, it was so pointless and went absolutely nowhere.
Ha, forced name drops are always fun, especially in any media where there is a lot of characters whose names you have to learn.
I think it’s really interesting that we get a Superman AND Batman shoutout in this movie. Historically I think the only time marvel has ever mentioned DC was in a literal Superman/Spider-Man crossover.
Kevin's looking like a baby aquaman
Pretty sure Ikaris never intended to kill the Deviants when in modern times. He missed his shots on purpose.
2 kings of the north in one movie
Andy put it best right at the start. Love the 2 hour in review episodes!!!
Besides the Shang-Chi bus scene, the fight against Ikaris is probably one of the best choreographed fights in the entire MCU
Eternals was ok
Nothing in this movie felt like it mattered. However, Kingo deserves his own Disney+ series.
You vaguely alluded to the movie so I’m gonna ask - pirates of the Caribbean in review when?
I got here before the audio did lol
Arishem the judge is gonna be the judge character. Great observation Tim. Almost like it’s not in the name that he’s judges which planets live and die
Kinda glad I decided to wait for D+ release
I'm with Kevin, I would put it at 12 on this list specifically.
I'm shocked none of them recognized Mahershala Ali's voice at the end. That was literally the most exciting part of the movie for me. I didn't know *or care about Harry Styles.
When the rings in this were introduced I audibly gasped "like in shang chi!"
Gilgamesh & the Indian Butler were my favorite characters by far
I guess you could say this movie flew a little too close to the sun? ;-)
It’s at 50:00

SPOILERS:
The Icarus twist makes him one of the better villains of the MCU.
Had to laugh that Tim is still hung up about Peter Parker calling Empire Strikes Back “that old movie”
Am I crazy or did Pip hum the victory song from Final Fantasy? Like when he first introduced Eros?
The movie reminded me of Ago of Ultron; there is A LOT packed in, at times the story was bloated by just how much they were trying to stuff in that would branch off into individual stories, but overall pretty good movie that will become more important and appreciated over the next couple years
I hope there is a Eternals 2 because I really enjoyed this movie a lot and I’m really really hoping ikiras is still alive because having a superman esk character in the MCU would be so cool
"They be f*ckin dawg..." Tim I love u, never change bruh

why did they never explain the main monster thing. It is just killed and never explained.
It feels like they wanted it to be the main enemy but changed their minds half way through production.
It's a spoiler review tho? you can comment without saying SPOILER
Really good thoughts guys. Seeing so many reviews that ignore the depth of this movie.
