- Fujifilm X-H2s animal eye detect is an awesome new feature, but is it reliable? We'll test it out some more with some new settings for wildlife. Works great for photography, but video is another story. Especially 4k 120p and HD 240fps. Using the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6.

Hey you should try installing Icaros. It improves the windows native video compatibility. So it'll make sure you have thumbnails on video clips in windows explorer even if they're prores or some other weird format. it'll also show detailed media information like bitrate, resolution, etc. It's pretty bomb.

Casey despite all the issues you mentioned, the shots you have shown in this video have been THE BEST I have seen to date in your videos. I own the camera, and IBIS is worst than the XT4, which I own too. So you are not alone, I also wondered why people were saying it was better. I assumed my old 10-24 f4 was the problem. i am extremely happy with the quality and colors of the videos I am getting from the XH2s, so much that is the only camera I have used for the past month. Fuji should pay attention to your videos, and really try improving the issues, because I am sure they could if they try, for real this time.
I demo'd the XH2s with the 150-600 at The Camera Store in Calgary and it was really amazing. But I asked the guy if the impressive eye detect performance would be matched in older lenses (or by matching the new lens with my X-T4 body) and he said..."Ohhh, no." Sure enough, we switched to the 100-400 and damn if he wasn't right. It still detected, but the results were more like what you're seeing in these videos. It actually chilled out my enthusiasm for the new body and the new lens. Better for me to keep looking for a used 100-400 to go with my X-T4.
Did you upgrade the firmware on the 100-400mm? You should before using with the XH2s

That dragonfly hovering over the water was actually laying eggs. A truly magical moment indeed, lost.
The blue magic bird was a male Indigo Bunting. I've only ever seen one myself, in Maryland. I heard a song once near my home in Queens, NY that I later ID'd as an Indigo Bunting; but I never saw the bird itself.

Lost because the camera was not set-up properly or the current firmware downloaded. User error. Whenever idiots fail they blame their tools, instead of realising how they failed and improving.
I guess today is International Disfunction Day. My health insurance sent my new card to my parents. I moved out almost two decades ago, all the paperwork gets mailed to my adress. Except this card. Whatever. Then my parents sent it to me via DHL but instead of simply putting the standard size envelope that fits in the tiniest mailbox into my mailbox, the dude put down the letter, probably even placed it *on* my mailbox, took out his stack of notification papers, tore off one sheet, wrote down my name, my adress, the adress where I can pick it up and when (11am), put that in my mailbox, grabbed my letter and walked off.
He didn't need me to sign anything or be there to receive it.
Worse things have happened to me but that was just so fucking pointless.
So I feel you, as a photographer and as a human boy:
Don't give me a focus box if you don't even try to focus and don't give me a note for a letter you were supposed to just drop in my mailbox. You did nothing.

The image quality and look of these clips is wow!! The deepness of the colors on the ducks and the dragonfly at the end was amazing.
Dragonfly smiling at you and saying cheese was worth your whole video production. Unforgettable. That's the right way to film animals!!!
Don't beat yourself up dude, your wildlife photography is getting better, the blue bird and bee footage was great, dreamy looking. The dragonfly footage was usable but disapointing due to lack of focus. Switch to manual focus if you have time once subject is stationary. Its trial and error but manual focus is the king

While some get robbed of over $2000 for a camera that's worse than the previous one, I master 8 bit slow motion 1080p footage on GH5M2 in (linear) manual focus, ~2000mm equivalent 2.6x sensor crop Ex Tele mode on Panasonic 100-400 lens. Trying the 50-200 and the 1.4x teleconverter eventually. Natural profile then remove baked in tone mapping and neutralize colors with my DSC Labs ChromaMatch Pro, creating a corrective LUT. Video Enhance AI Proteus model to upscale to 4K. Then, minor white balance tweak in a node prior to the LUT, along with a straight curve / gain to normalize the non tone mapped footage. Then, corrective LUT applied. Contrast in another node after LUT (just an S curve typically, also tone maps highlights as I prefer), and a subtle glow at a high luminance threshold as screen composite; this creates smoother cinema like highlight rolloff. I used the same trick when I was the camera guy on a short film coming out this year (Treasure) when they needed me to do a window shot and were worried about the blown out highlights in VLOG-L. I assured them I can smooth it out and I did. Cinema cameras are over rated. Anyways don't listen to me, go get robbed again. Finally, Dehancer Pro (a film emulation plug in for Resolve, way more sophisticated than Film Convert) I used to help give the footage some character. Once done, can copy grade to other shots and do a minor exposure tweak if necessary. I'm still learning and improving. I can adjust exposure within about +/- 1 stop in post in Natural and obviously more in VLOG-L. Don't need the best camera, just keep learning and mastering exposure etc. Here's my latest example: ua-cam.com/video/ch_Ef2YylOg/v-deo.html - The Fuji footage does look great though it's just ... what a bad design. You regret your purchase. I mean you knew better ... you tried it awhile back and was disappointed. The camera has so much potential but Fuji is weird, in both good and bad ways.

Good lord thank you for this video, I've been considering an upgrade from the X-T2 as it really struggles to make great use of the 150-600mm lens... But I've seen so much inconsistent commentary online and a lot of victim blaming when focus issues occur, these videos make it pretty clear my X-T2 focus problems (and button mapping / custom settings options) are still unsolved 6yrs later. Other brands aren't perfect, but they seem leaps and bounds ahead.
My cat loved the blue bird footage despite the focus issues. So that’s something.
Know nothing about camaras, thoroughly enjoyed video. Every time a dragonfly dips their abdomen tip, they lay an egg. Butterfly was a Skipper. Indigo Bunting, I've rescued a few in city sometimes depending on the light their blue looks iridescent green (this particular birds feathers contain no blue pigment the structure makes it appear blue). Great Golden Digger Wasp on the Sweet Clover, Ruby Throated Hummingbird near Jewelweed. A friend & I rescue birds when they migrate thru the city, birds hit the glass skyscrapers or fall to the cement, most do not survive impact, those that do survive, we get them help. I'd love to see a comparison between the XH2s' and Canon's R7's animal eye detect. Both cameras record beyond the old 30minute limit, which is huge for me, but the AF performance in this vid is worrisome. (Also, 120 and up frame rates are great, but not, at the end of the day, that important to me. I'd rather see tests at 30/60 fps, which is where I shoot the vast majority of the time.)
Continually it seems that manual focus is the ultimate way to go for video, almost regardless of camera. Just Jordan Drake that focus ftw!
What camera would you buy if you had your heart set on a SONY a7siii, but couldn't afford it. Would you keep using the 6400 until I have enough money for the a7siii or buy say, an a7iii or another full frame Sony & end the hunt?

Jip agree. I sold mine and reverted back to my A9ii and 200-600. So for me the XT4 remains the best Fuji for all other photography. However, I do not like to work with 2 systems so I will eventually change to Sony 7Ac for what I use the XT4 for. The A9ii was now on special in my country for $180 more than the XH2s and the 200-600 was $200 more than the stupid Fuji 150-600 f8 !!!! produced for lunch time bird feeder pictures and the f8 is good for wildlife between 12h00 and 15h00 on a bright sunny day in Africa especially if you shoot action and BIF and need shutter speeds of 1/2000 +. As IS just does not cut it when you need high SS. last weekend misty weather shooting birds with a loan 150-600 f8 and first of all 60% of the images were out of focus trying all kinds of settings. second I was shooting at ISO 12000 all the time to try and get decent Sutter speed. Then change to the A9ii that was the final straw. Later on the fog lifted so we had better light, still shooting at ISO 6400 and 3200 but the in focus rate now improved to about 50% even on slow flying birds. Focus shows it is logged on 100% green squire on the bird 100% but 100% out of focus. The A9ii pumped the card full of keepers 100% all in focus and I'm post man the noise levels.. fortunately software is now a saving grace. On the 100-400 could shoot al slightly lower ISO but the focus is just as terrible.

I was so ready to go buy an X-H2s and then watched all your "glowing" reviews of the camera. Then I decided to get the A7IV instead and watched your videos of Sony colors. Now, I think maybe a Canon R5, but that kit is 2x the price of an A7IV kit and X-H2s kit. I guess I'll be sticking to my phone.
A7 IV is a really good camera. I enjoyed the R5 as well, and in a vacuum, I think R5 > A7 IV in image quality and, of course, shooting speed, but a camera doesn't make the system. Ultimately, Sony E mount has the best selection of lenses. Keep in mind that in a side-by-side, A7 IV usually looks better than the A7S III because it's oversampled, and it has a very good APS-C crop mode, too. Don't worry too much about color. Look at all the people who've gotten amazing colors from Sony cameras. You can always adjust colors to your liking. You can't adjust your way out of unavailable lenses and completely missed AF. Not only that, A7 IV has the single best operating ergonomics of any camera ever made, in my opinion, because it has four programmable dials and a dedicated video/photo switch.

Check out Mike Riley's channel. An actual photographer using the X-H2S daily. It is an amazing camera. And stop watching clickbait channels on youtube like this one.
I have one I mainly shoot video for products weddings and I shoot alot of fast moving subjects so far I've been really impressed

Focus problems aside, you have some great footage there. I'm wondering if it's the size of the eye that gives Fuji problems. You had no problem with the frog. The birds with smaller eyes are harder for the animal eye detect to focus on?
Does the fuji have something like a easy focus hold button?
On the sony the moment I think something might trip up the AA Like the duck going in water, I focus hold then release when we comes up.

The Fuji look is unique and magical. Its worth suffering thru all the disappointments to occasionally get the dream shot. Maybe 10 Kaizen updates from now it will be improved 5%.

That new 150-600mm is completely different, undesirable with T8 Toniature. And the 18mm video didn't pulse once, it was ongoing throughout that video.

@@cameraconspiracies was low light though. And your head was turned, then faced toward camera, then turned back. It needs some tweaking but those older lenses, especially the 100-400, just need to be updated. The 50-140 and 90mm f2 are working fine for me in motorsports, but they also could use an update. All those lenses are 5-7 years old.
The Zeiss lens is going to be AF trash. My YT videos get all kinds of hate from Fuji fanboys who swear that I am imagining how unreliable it is in some situations. 🤣You’ve confirmed what I already knew.
If the Fuji AF is still not reliable, best to return/sell the X-H2s and stick with the T4 using manual focus only. The Fuji colors are very pleasing and you can live with 1080/120 for now.

They are selling used open box on eBay for $1,800 after just 3 months on the market. My position has been , and will continue to be, it's not a bad camera, just way overpriced compared to the competition. I may pick one up when they go on super sale for $995 like the X-H1 did. Glad it's working well for the amazing Mike Riley though!
I trying to follow, when is the Zeiss coming. I have the xH2S, I don’t like the switched the dials. Go back to XH1? Or X-T4. Using a Canon 1DX Mark iii. Guess what heavy but immaculate. But I want a smaller camera which can track eye and Sony is not for me. What to do?
I'm thinking just use manual focus and set the AF-L button for back button auto focus (AF On) and just press the button for auto focus until it locks on and then tweak with manual focus using peaking to help judge critical focus.

I would suggest trying different autofocus settings to see if it improves the consistency, but I imagine you already have done that. Right? It is a great improvement coming from the X-T3, but those that are already satisfied with the X-T4 I can understand the frustration. Hopefully Fuji gets it right on the firmwares.
I've been trying to get some footage of hummingbirds in my backyard..those things are hard to film..so small and fast...debating on weather or not dropping 2K on a super tele to get some epic hummingbird footage is worth it or not!

So Panasonic gets slagged off for their autofocus but something that’s almost as bad but costs 4 times as much (as a G9) gets given chance after chance. Feels like my childhood over again where my brother got away with stuff I didn’t.
And the chip on your shoulder blinds you to the bleeding obvious. The X-H2S is a a modern camera and the 100-400 was designed to be used with the XT series. It can't keep pace with the camera. If you use the 150-600 you find the autofocus is extremely good. But then that wouldn't make a great clickbait video, would it?
Can't you spin the front tube thing to force it to focus?
on my Gh6 I switched to AF-s use eye detect to focus once. Most animals don't much and you can refocus once they move
bird-af on GH6 is worse. It shows the box around the bird but doesn't focus. I already knew where is was. After seeing this I prefer GH6 because body and 100-400 magnify more and is smaller. Handheld video is good enough with or without the help of some post stabilization. Losing the tripod is wonderful.
I am having the same issues with animal eye detect on the x-H2s and the 150-600mm lens. The box will be right on the eye and most are out of focus. Has anyone figured out a way to tweak the settings so it works better?

An excellent camera. Not properly weathersealed and if you shoot RAW, you fill the buffer in one second. Jesus. Does anyone actually read any real reviews?
Theoria Apophasis reviewed the XH2s and said it was junk. Its Groundhog day for me, because I remember when the XH1 came out and it reviewed poorly too and the reviewers said that the XT3 was still better, and that the XH1 obviously wasn't supposed to beat their flagship camera XT3. Some happens again, and its groundhog day at the XH2s is not as good as the XT4 Flagship camera.
Originally the XH1 came with Fujis IBIS, in a DSLR styled body. My Pentax K-3 at the time was smaller than the XH1 and the K-3 auto focus was better too. After the huge flop of the XH1 people were selling them all over the place, and the XH1 became an orphan literally overnight. I vaguely recall XH1 owners living in hope of firmware updates to make it comparable to the XT3, and Fujifilm confirmed officially that the XH1 would not get those firmwares and people were disgusted, and sold their XH1's. The thing is a freaking orphan.
The XH2s is similarly a DSLR styled body. It looks like the XH2s will go down as a flop 2.0 designed to never beat the XT4 flagship. Wait and see if Fuji will do any firmwares from the XT4 onto the XH2s, but I wouldn't hold my breath.........
The XH1 and XH2s looks like a Fujifilm scam. You've been scammed like Canon scams all its fanbois and fangurls.
Theoria Apophasis is a sd individual with his own problems. It appears that because of his clickbait channel, none of the manufacturers will lend him any cameras, so he very seldom ever has the camera in his hands and you never see and RAW files he shoots either. The fact that you think this guy is a measure of anything would indicate that you don't know much about cameras or how people review them.
If you look at DPReview you will see an updated review where they now think the camera is amazing. If you check out Mike Riley's channel, you can see an actual photographer who uses the camera on a daily basis, for video and photos.
Is the camera perfect? No. Is any camera perfect? No. But if you follow clickbait reviewers you will learn nothing.

Dragonfly....it was like there's a "contrast detect" component to the focus algorithm that is weighted to override the moving element. Multiple downloadable firmware options to customize for the users' preferences would be easy IMO.

Or you could check out Mike Riley's channel. He's a photographer who can make the autofocus work. But then he is good. The problem is that fools buy a camera and when they fail, they blame the camera. Being fools, they would. What they should do is to realise that in most cases, they haven't set up the camera properly, haven't updated the firmware and haven't learned how to use the camera. But fools blame the tool, it is never their fault. Clickbait fools are the worse.

I think its time to just sell everything and cop the Sony A1. You know youll be happy, and the color science in the A1 is different than all the other Sonys. I own the A1 and I absolutely love it. They damn near nailed the color science, and the autofocus is ridiculously ahead of its time. It never fails, almost feels like cheating. Great video as always man… love waking up and laughing my ass off to get my day started. Keep em comin!

I was using the X-S10 today, had it on a bird but it decided to latch onto a flower on the other side using eye-detect (square box, little green box inside). Flowers don't usually have eyes, do they? That dragonfly focus crime, disgusting. Not feeling I'm missing much...
Isn't Fuji known for updating firmwares often? Maybe they will fix some of these issues.
Issued fixed 2 months ago. That's what happens when you are too lazy to update. Check out Mike Riley's channel. Someone who actually knows how to use this camera properly.

After watching all the reviews I think that there are only five cameras which have somewhat reliable animal autofocus are R5, R3, R6, Z9 and a7IV. Please note I mention somewhat reliable not the best. Out of which only a7IV and R6 are worth the cost and weight.
Yes, the one thing holding Fuji back is their focusing. Everything else is great. It got better though

I have been told the AF problems are in slo-mo. 60p and less are supposed to perform much better No idea I that is true because freaking Aden camera won't answer my email about sending me a free XH2s.
X-H2S seems more like a flagship 4th gen camera, and the X-H2 is actually a 5th gen "X-H3." The real X-H2 is the non-existent 26mp version.

You gotta be careful when criticizing Fuji cameras because the fanboys can get very defensive. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my XT4 and all, but it's far from perfect when it comes to AF. Any time I criticize Fuji in my vids, even though I'm a huge fan and love their stuff, I get a lot of hate and defensiveness. That's why I now call them #fujiflakes lol

The subject detection on the X-H2S is incredibly good. It sees the target and latches on with a tracking box... but it just can't seem to actually focus on it. It's incredibly frustrating. Combined with the lower quality 240fps, it feels like this camera is a bit half-baked and waiting for firmware upgrades to complete.

Is this the same for stills with mechanical shutter?
The eye auto-focus should switch over to the bird and not go completely out of focus making the footage unusable. It is simply unacceptable for a camera at this price point with all those bells and whistles. Missing the eye.. OK in certain situations.. losing the subject alltogether is not.
Look like a big increase in image quality at 8:19. Maybe Xt4 or A7iii.

looks like the the algoritms of the cam doesnt work the whole way of the focal length, especially not when the object is leaving the sharp zone of the field when this zone is usually very small due to the bokeh addiction the vlogger wants to live out? usually happens when a vlogger wants to be a photographer^^

Sell the fuj and buy an R5. With the new firmware the overheating issues have gotten a lot better no more crazy corner wobbles when vlogging and hey who doesn't like Canon color science.
