Just a heads up. I can’t tell for sure how you are measuring but it looks like you are putting the gage between the eyes on that soft membrane. You have to put the edge of the lobster gage on the hard ridge that connects the two horns. The ridge is behind the soft membrane for the eyes. So basically put the gage between the eyes and pull the gage back toward the tail to catch onto that ridge. The fine for 1 underside lobster is $1100 and they will not give you any mercy
I was out there last Saturday. Got skunked. If I had known you could have crashed at my pad in Vista( near Oceanside). I have extra rooms.

For clarity on the California Spiny Lobster regs, yes, the daily limit is 7, but the possession limit is also 7. So if you're going to go out for lobster again, make sure that you only keep enough to bring you back to 7 in possession. If you eat 2 and keep the rest in the freezer or fridge, you can legally only get 5 on your next trip. If you give 3 away, you can get 4 on your next trip. A California Warden's jurisdiction for lobster does not stay in the ocean. They can follow you to your place of stay to make sure that you are within regulations and legal possession limit.
I know some great Lobster spots (ones that you can use your kayak). Let me know. I have dived these waters for many years. 🌘

Love seeing you use my favorite Kayak. Hopefully our water issues calar after Ian and I can get out soon. Waters closed here due to bacteria from all the dead creatures . Tangled in the 120 auto Pilot motor is a pain to get undone in the water. Glad you were able to get it.

Hey I am only like 20 mins in the vid lol so idk if u have done this in the vid but u have to try fishing the break water wall in the big bay in san diego because I saw u go out of mission bay but the other bay has a lot of lobster
this is MrBear in fl. there seems to be a big problem with the pug in pins for the motor, i have seen were peaple hard wire back to the battery and by pass the plug in.

In the 70s we fished for Bonito in Quivira Basin in San Diego with 8 lb spinning gear using a 3 hook silver Rapala. What a blast

That front plug is ongoing issue with many owners. I would have thought that Old Town would have come up with a better solution by now.

Enjoyed the vid. Recommend getting yourself some trolling lures so you can still catch fish if the bait is hard to come by! My biggest yellowtail came on a trolled rapala.
Kinda hurt to hear the disdain in your voice talking about divers. As a diver myself, I try to stay away from buoys out of principle and safety, as there's no sport in picking lobsters out of someone else's trap. Still, I'm merely one out of many and there's a lot of bad actors out there that give everyone else a bad rep.

Man i tell ya what, i did the sleepin sitting up thing a few times fishin down at the coast in my legacy. I just got an outback and i got a blow up mattress that fits perfectly in the back. Sucks moving all my stuff to the front seats but it is nice stretching out in the back.
Dielectric Grease on all of your electrical connections will go a long way for longevity and reliability.

Besides the camera and headlight, do u have any lights installed on your kayak? I've been wanting to go since opening night but only have my front green/red lights, needing to install the rear and side lights. So I feel a bit more confident I won't be used as a ramp by a boat 😂

Those are ROCK lobsters correct? Because they have no claws.
Why not fill it with seawater and use aerator to keep them alive until you harvest the meat
If motor wires are warm or hit you know it’s a grounding wire … it can catch fire

Glad to have you visit our end of the state! My last two trips out of Dana Point Harbor, I took home some Bonito as well. I think those things fight pretty well - fun to catch, and dinner both nights for my wife and me. You are right - the fillets of one are about the right size for a meal. I also made some smoked bonito dip out of some of the others. I understand you can keep 5 that are "undersized".

You properly prep your fish and keep the meat fresh by bleeding it right away. That’s a big reason why your catches taste good. Bonito is underrated.
Heard they are good lobster bait too. Some ppl swears by them. I don’t know what the legality of using it as lobster bait though.

Those are the fish I know well. Too bad the Kelp bass was short, those are good eaters. My first job was as a deckhand on the half day boat out of Newport Beach....long time ago. You need to catch a Yellowtail and a Blue or Yellowfin. Go further south!

Just a heads up but I believe the regs say you can have a maximum of 7 lobster in possession, not 7 per day. Great vid sir .. hope to make it out soon.
that is correct 7 in possession, I believe you can get a multi-day permit, or at least you use to.
the daily limit and possession are the same at 7. so until you eat some or give some away if you have 7 you cannot take anymore. there is no such thing as multi- day its 7 and done.
@@ericr1382 That's partially wrong; if you are on a boat for 3 days you can have up to 21. If you go out fishing from shore on 3 days and get 3 days worth of 7, that is not allowed.
