  • Round 4 of the NSW Hillclimb Championship saw us travel to Mt Cooperabung located just south of Kempsey.
A track that once was the Pacific Highway, now turn hillclimb track was a blast and although short, did not lack a level of complexity that if gotten wrong, can bite you at any moment.
Practice started at 12pm on the Saturday with an opportinty to knock out as many runs as you could fit in.
The current class record stands at 25.724 set by a Nissan GTR in 2017.
I was determined to break into the 25 second bracket and on the 9th run, it finally came.
With the goal achieved, we packed up and went to our hotel for the night.
Sunday morning was cool and the track lacked the same grip experienced the day before.
With so many runs had on the Saturday, it was soon discovered that the current brake pads were not up to the task of stopping, as i quickly discovered coming into the hairpin after the chicane on the first run.
Thankfully i managed to pull the car up before running into the tyre barrier, but ended with a high 26 second run.
Run 2 saw a similar situation, with stopping not as it was the day before.
Thankfully i had my street / light track pads with me and run 3 was missed whilst I frantically changed brake pads on searing brakes.
Run 4 was a low 26 again as i felt out the stopping abilities of the new pad compound.
The 5th and final run was an all or nothing run after Jason Hickey in the other RS4 jumped ahead with an even lower 26 second run.
Focused on giving it everything i and the car had in that moment, i set off one last time and made it across the finish line in a time of 25.902 which secured 1st in class and 2nd outright (State comp).
With these results, it has now moved us into 2nd outright in the state championship, 1st in class and moved us even further ahead as the state championships fastest tintop.
Thank you must be said once again for my unwaivering pitcrew and close friends who make these trips so amazing and memorable, and for Kempsey Sporting Car Club for hosting such an amazing event. The club and volunteers are made up of a group of amazing people and i cannot wait to return again next year to do it again...... and take the class record!

Congratulations on a great run. Just to keep history correct it is the old Pacific highway.

Sorry Matt wrote a long comment last week didn't seem to post. But enjoyed the summary at beginning and explanation on the pads...and I was wondering if you need underwear change as well as pad change 😉

Oh Don if you saw the footage of the first run on Sunday, you'd have the same heart attack i felt as the car flew towards the tyre wall. Thankfully it did pull up just in time and still managed a decent run.
I think what also added to mix was the shadows of the trees were covering the road as well as the left hand corner, which they werent the day before as practice disnt start until 12pm. May have slightly affected my depth perception a little.
Great little track though and looking at the footage, there is a tonne of time to make on the left hand hairpin.

@@mattbrown8732 you would have been fine those trees 1 metre off the track would have pulled you up!! Again to drive hard in that environment is brave and requires bravery and skills...or maybe just a touch of lunacy ....well done great work mate 👍

@@doncraven1243 definately a little more lunacy than bravery, but without both, you'll never get close to finding the limits as a driver.
