  • If you want to learn how to hit high notes with power, you’ve probably heard that you need mixed voice.
Mixed voice, or the seamless blend between the chest voice and head voice, is a concept that’s been around for centuries!
But is mixed voice the key to your dreams, or is it out of style with current vocal pop stars like Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and Charlie Puth?
Today, is mixed voice still worth learning?

Thank I'm struggling to push forward and I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. Honestly I'm doing all the steps and still not getting any improvement. 😔💔

I’ve only been able to start unlocking my mixed voice about a year ago. And what I found is that it is not only a new separated tool, but that it has also made my tone richer and better when I sing in head or chest voice.
And it also contributed tons to my vocal freedom.

I had vocal lessons with a coach and he said I was mixing but I was quite new to it at the time. You're able to sing high notes lightly and go into them with power if you want. I like a lighter approach. It took three years but it was worth it for me. Probably another three for stability/flexibility.

Mixed voice is something I seem to have learnt by accident before I even knew what it was and had even gotten serious about singing. I don’t really know when or how I learnt it but I think growing up on and singing along to a lot of 70s and 80s rock helped to embed that mixed voice sound in my brain. Then I began drawing on that music in my own songwriting which required me to sing in mixed voice in order to get the sound I was hearing in my head. It was quite a pleasant surprise when a year ago I first heard mixed voice demonstrated in a UA-cam video and realised I could do it no problem (although to be fair, it did still need some fine tuning). In fact, I actually have to be really intentional if I want to sing something like “the scientist” the way Chris Martin does it.

This is another good thing to be reminded about. As well as knowing that it is still important and helpful to have a mixed voice. I do keep working on that. Ever since I got connected to this amazing teacher. Thank-you.

I don’t even keep up closely with the current top-40-style pop so this was informative to me about both current trends and the value of mixed voice. It was really motivating to hear that once you’ve learned mixed voice well (in 3 mo to 3 years), you can look forward to having it for the long haul. Thanks, Matt! I like how you don’t make singing sound easy (because there’s work to be done) but you also take away some of the intimidating myths that make it seem out of reach.

Do you regard the voice Peter Hollens uses at around F# in a song like his Loch Lomond or Amazing Grace as mixed voice or is he in what you would call head voice there?

Mix is healthier than “pulling chest” too high to belt ie YELL. Hello, nodes & polyps.

No. Anything above F#4 is pulling chest for an adult male. You should be tilting and more CT at that point. You'll destroy your voice ego straining to feel "authentically" tenor.

@@deathrattle216 you can get up to A4 healthily with good technique it just takes time and practice. As long as you're not singing A4 in chest voice all the time you'll be fine.

I find that in the music after the mid 2000s and later, they overdo the auto tune. It makes singers sound like robots. A little auto tune is okay.
