I played the game for the combat I swear. Stellar Blade is the most surprising W of 2024 and I am absolutely amazed by what ShiftUp put forward in their first big AAA title. But what exactly about it made me so amazed? Well just pick an outfit and get on with it already, so strap in boys and girls, and let's get down to business!

Finally someone who appreciates how good this game really is. Feel like most reviewers said it was pretty good but wrote it off as “we have Nier Automata at home”. Easily a game of the year contender for me
Most of the reviewers speed ran the game, not realizing that the NG+ is unlike other games NG+. And most also skipped a lot of the side quests and collectible lore bits which significantly enhances the story. While I want to say that their review is still valid, they are speaking from an incomplete experience
I knew the reviews were gonna be garbage due to the drama before the game even came out anw because they would dismiss a lot of the game as a nier clone but after completing the game myself I can safely say it was amazing. It started off slow and worked its way up but it really ended off on a strong note and the story while not being the best as a whole left me feeling very satisfied with the end plus the final boss. Overall, it's a great game. Honestly, it's better than I expected.
@@balululul273 Just to counter for the sake of it, if you make stuff optional then can you really blame gamers for not going for it? Especially since a lot of them say the same thing. Nier Automata had way more nuanced quests and not just [Mother Sphere].
Honestly yes you can blame them. Gamers used to be about finding all the secrets and hidden easter eggs.
@@dlpheonix But optional stuff by definition is optional. Personally, I found them a bit boring (a few, usually they were way interesting than what Ubi does) and fishing I didn't do because fishing in games is unbelievably boring and should die in a fire. lol
So far i finish the game twice and i can't put it down this is how good it is.

I am so glad I played the game in korean language lol I had no issues with voice acting and in turn my experience with story was better than what others say

Its the standard anime Japanese + Subs vs Dub experience. Play in native language + Subs wins by far.

Switched the VA to Spanish, didn't understand a word, but it sure sounded beautiful. NG+ I'll give Korean a chance, since you all recommend it.
There is more natural speech but she still doesn't get sentimental or panics or anything and personally i like it.
Eve is an android that was trained for deadly combat and killing and since she landed on the planet she killed all kinds of abominations and monsters the level of buildings.
Kind of hard to make such an existence scared because you shut the door on her in a creepy room full of death.
So i don't know why this guy feels she should be more stressed or panicked about the door closing other than a light worry.
This game is great . I would say graphics ,gameplay , boss fight 10/10. Main story 8/10 it felt short and needed more cutscene, ending could have been better . Eve is 100/100. But sony censoring it wtf . #free stellar blade!!!

About the story part: I think people really need to view the story and lore from the perspective of who they are playing and who they are interacting with.
How would you be talking when there is just no other way out than dead? Death surrounds your daily life. You could die any moment. I surely would lose my sanity and lose my emotions with it. I’d be the exact same as they are right now.
Now about EVE.. she is an Andro-Eidos just like most of the people you meet throughout the game. How many robots can portray emotions on a human scale? Pretty sure not many if any. We as humans will likely spot if something is off or uncanny.
But for anyone reading this, do yourself a favor and play it in korean with english subtitles. It’s so much more emotional and the VA is actually really good!

Humans turned into Naytibas. So essentially all enemies you defeat were once humans. Alphas on the other hand were Andro-Eidos. All created through the actions of Raphael Marks.
I actually enjoyed the English voice actor. Maybe I'm the only one.
@StrateTrippin I think the English performances get better by the final third of the game but the Korean dub is good from the start.

I think people get too focused on the voice acting but some of the most critically acclaimed game series(looking at you Resident Evil) had notoriously bad voice acting. I’m an old school gamer, the more ridiculous and separated from reality the better. Give me realism in sports games (unless it’s nba jam, nba street or nfl blitz/league…I retract the realism in sports games statement.) Korean characters with English accents just accents the fact that it is a fantasy world for me.

Until Sony's heavy handed censorship is put in check I'll gladly wait. Already seen most of the game in a stream. Its fairly decent but the appeal is the character herself more than the gameplay. So if they don't budge I can wait for steam in a year or two.

The English voice actors suck it literally felt like it was just reading from a script so the story isn't the real problem it's the boring voice actors who didn't really seem like they were interested in playing the role at all
I like how everything comes together by the end but had mixed feelings about it for 60% of the game.
The stats in the outfits comes from yourself. Once you put on the prefered outfit on you become, sharp, reaction time increases wich is good for parry and dodging, memory increases wich is good for remembering combos. 👌💪
The director admits that he's not a storyteller, he's more a visualist kinda guy, it's shows in this game (he started in this industry as a character designer).
Tbf, about EVE lack of emotions, she's a soldier from colony and she starts to learn things (it reminds me to Alita Battle Angel honestly), also in one of the interviews with the director, he mentioned that if there any sequel (if gamers want it), they want to flash out EVE's personality more.
I hope if they decided to make SB2, they should have enough budget (profit from this game) to hire better writer, better VA for side characters, etc and not making promises they can't keep.
The story is actually pretty good.

Stellar Blade is my personal Game of the Year. The combat is thoughtful, the graphics are definitely "next-gen" quality, and while the writing is the weakest aspect I think the story and lore are fine at least. Overall, this game isn't short of just amazing. And the fact this is Shift-Up's first ever AAA game speaks how much potential this company could go towards.
About the voice acting: literally everybody with voice lines (except for Adam) is literally an Android. And EVE is a baby, most likely born shortly before the 7th Airborne Squad attack. She has no memories of the colony (she actually shuts down all questions regarding that) and she only learns to become more „human“ as she interacts with others. Yes, the voice work was robotic - but maybe by design?
I had the same thought about the voice acting. It seemed a bit off but then i figured out what it was. The VAs didn't know the context of their lines. They were just told to read a script and it was put in the game. Without context, it's hard to tell exactly how to read a line. I'm sure the Korean voice acting is much better but the English voicing was awkward at times.
That actually isn’t true, the English VA for eve said they provided context when able, and sometimes were able to provide another actors lines for reference. They also listened to the Korean dialogue/fight voice acting so the English VA could emulate some of their noises/tones.
The only glaring issues I saw as far as acting were when it came to lily and Adam, I couldn’t get those 2 off my screen fast enough. But they’re the only real detractors for me in the game, I give it a 9/10
Same. I'm excited to see what Shift Up can do, given the output that they have with their first AAA title.
I honestly like it how you're speaking on the game in this light it's a damn fun game... I think its a game of the year worth game to be fair and most definitely hope it gets a game of the year.
To not let momentum die off for the game there needs to be some extensions to the game DLC wise and the second one needs to be put into production rapidly as these games have the break or make mentality.
Finished the game 6 times man all endings and missions complete and honestly I could start it again its just that good 😁✌️ man some dlc for this wrapping up the loose ends would make this game a true 10/10
The larger areas are more expansive than I first realised just like Eve's hips. When I thought I explored all of the wasteland there were actually more areas to find.

Fantastic review. The one thing I'd say about Eve is that she was programmed to be a soldier and that's her only function, to hunt and kill Naytiba, so she's a blnk slate, in a way. There's the comic that gives a tiny little miniscule amount of backstop with Eve and Tachy. Lastly, some of the music was composed by Okabe. That's a direct connection to Nier. I forgot, PLAY IT IN KOREAN.
Ill be honest the great desert kind of made me look at the skill tree training to learn more parry combos dodge combos and more Beta and it really helpped i got so much better after practicing for an hour
This game has been amazing. The fact that Eve is smoking hot is just a nice bonus lol

I haven’t finished so I don’t really know where the story goes because I’ve avoided all spoilers thankfully. I’m a little disappointed as to how the voice acting turned out in the English version and would like to know what direction they got.
I think we get more emotion and backstory for lily, even if it was small, than any other “main character” if you can call them that lol. Although, you can miss her section if you don’t get 100 percent the into while in Zion.
Also, I don’t know about anyone else BUT I easily would’ve spent 5 bucks on extra nano suits for Eve FOR SURE! Along with the combat, the customization is one of my favorite parts of the game!
I finished the game twice, 2nd time on hard mode. Game play is very satisfying, boss fights are challenging, especially on hard mode. Eve’s legs and ass are just the icing on the cake… something pleasing to look at while you enjoy the game play.
I personally loved the main story.
I agree with most of your points, but what do you mean "Su is f**king a machine?" They're both "machines". Every single person in this game is, except one.
I think he was paying more attention to Eve's ass than the story. It's probably why he thinks it wasn't good.
@@tek87 Yeah, in fact, I noticed that most people who say the story is extremely bad actually missed a LOT of main plot points.
I kinda agree and disagree on the VA. I thought Eve is a bit monotone because that's the way I expect a super weapon to be, honestly. Some NPCs were bad, though.
In terms of memorable lines, I really liked 'May you live on [pause] forever.' Loved the fact that when you learn more about the world Eve then just says 'I don't feel like praying anymore.' I dunno why but that kinda got me.
The rest in terms of story was disappointing, sadly. Apart from Raven (I'm dumb) I predicted the entire story. I hope a potential part 2 works on that.

It is so amazing. And the scale and music. Especially by the end!!!!! Such a great game after rebirth. Kinda even reminds me of ff16.

This game is incredible and you've voiced my same opinion on it super succinctly. I think the sex appeal is part of what makes this game great and should be embraced and enjoyed alongside the excellent combat, level design, progression and atmosphere/art style. Music is banging too. I don't see anything wrong with men(and women!) of culture enjoying what they paid for. I want more games with badass sexy femme fatales.
Exactly my impression! Apart from some annoying things...looking at you, plasma turrets...this Game is such a gem. Yes, I am constantly a little horny playing it, and if you are a prude, this will trigger you big time. BUTt it looks great, it feels great, it's feature complete and runs without any issues. Big surprise, will recommend :)

oh Lost Ark. After first reaching Xion, collect the sidequests you can. Progress until Adam directs you to The Wasteland. Open the Xion map then press L1. If you see a yellow ! you can go talk with Mann who explains the situation. You then head back to the Memory Square and find a body in an alleyway that points to a warehouse. The warehouse has a quantum lock so Eve thinks then you see behind her a blue icon that tells you to turn Xion clockwise. Go around the city finding six terminals that give you the letters needed and then at the terminal enter the code: oukaer (it looks like these letters to me xD). The shutter opens and you find a body on the floor. This room you saw, has the last part of the quest.

its not really worth it. the NG+ with the patch is way more worth it than a few better looking outfits.

The story was not the best but it was not as bad as you made it out to be. I think the ending brought it all together nicely. Respectfully, water Tacky would be horrible 😂. Also the game does a lot via lore to establish pretty clearly that mother sphere is the actual overarching villain. Still not the best but actually not terrible.
I dont speak French, but I started using French Voice Over because English and Korean were so shit. Eve sounds pretty bad ass in French, Adam is a lot more tolerable and Lily is waaaaay better too.

Well in german and in the original voice the voice acting its better. It has to be the Script or direction. And yes the Story is barebones but still its theyr first game.
Having been tormented by horrible English dubs in the past, I don't find Stellar Blade's English voice acting to be all that bad. I do find the voices themselves to be miscast instead. That is why I switched to the Korean dub, as I found the voices suit the characters played, like Eve with a higher pitched voice works better both for her more youthful appearance and in contrast to the more experienced Tachy. And that barber NPC has a deeper voice in the Korean dub more fitting for his large appearance.
The world building is actually quite good, even with the obvious nods to Nier. It's why I ended up liking Adam as a tragic character alot. The delivery and character development, though, is weak. The overall presentation was good, and as far as I was concerned, it did just enough to motivate me to progress through the game, but I can't deny it really could've been better.
Anyways, working through my second playthrough, and trying to finish that and Lies of P before the Elden Ring DLC drops. Stellar Blade even with its issues was alot of fun, and hoping for DLC and a sequel.
funny, i thought the desert areal was great. it felt like a nice challenge and enemies werent pushovers anymore.
The robos arent even that hard to kill(every "tanky" enemie is pretty quick to kill with the combo chain upgrade Square, Triangle, Square, Hold triangle(the sword glows red then. the final combo hit blow does ALOT of damage if done right. you usualy can kill all these robos with a single combo and maybe 1-2 extra hits or in combo with a beta skill).
by far the most annoying enemies are the sandcrawlers tho when they die they grab you and give you extra damage. and the darker versions of them do a SH!TTON of dmg.
But i thought it was super fun. especially with alot of the creative ways how they hide treasure boxes there. always a new idea. and the oasis fishing pond there is the best area in the game.
I feel like I’m in the minority in saying I didn’t mind the story. Yeah it simple but no one got this game for some deep Fight Club level story.

I thought the story was great for a video game. People who criticized stories In games I literally don't understand what they expect sometimes. From what I've heard it's just the same story as evangelion from what the developer said but I've never seen Evangelion so it was great for me. And the voice actors were fine, what are you talking about? The only character that I didn't really like her voice was Lily.
The story in this game is absolutely amazing. It's far superior to Nier. They took all the best parts of Nier's story and forged it into something more cohesive and thought-out.
I liked the story for what it was. I think Eve acts as she should. She is a weapon that was told she was human but made to be a disposable weapon. Only she only finds that out after coming to earth. She should be a stupid, stoic warrior until the end with the revelations. Her arch is landing, finding humans/xion, deciding to help them as she does her mission, and then at the end, depending on what you choose. She is either fuck the system or with it. I think it works, and Raven is tailing you the whole game you just dont know it. She is doing all the killings and leaving the Messages at the cores. The first act of fuck these people is leaving her a live. Not perfect but I liked it, I just want for info on what MS is.
It wasnt just Eve who was told she is Human. All Humans in the game are artificial Humans and real biological Humans are basically extinct after turning into Naytibas, unless you count Adam as evolved Human, because he originally was one.

I liked the mission of realizing history got wiped and everyone was lied to about what a real human was. Thats why I want for MS answers like was Eve her next step for humans or was playing at something else.
.....The hairdresser voice. Wow, was that a miss. They could have given him a voice to match his build and it would have been memorable. But better than that, they could have given him a lispy and high pitched voice. Add some dialogue and perhaps a memorable side quest string and then you might get "Hurk" from the Far Cry series.
Instead...he annoys you and does your hair. They not only missed, they failed to swing.
I gave it a 8/10. I havnt beat the game yet, but the story is weak, among other obvious issues with gameplay. Eve is the stand out character foe me, the only emotion I really got was sadness from her. Good game a bigger better 2nd game would be epic.
For your complain on the VA, i generally felt that it's just the English one that has issues. I played NG+ on Korean VA and they felt much more natural, also not having to deal with the slightly annoying English VA's too aggressive battle cries helped too
I agree, luckily the Italian dub is also pretty good. This game got dubbed in most major languages due to it being a Sony exclusive.
I honestly think that a lot of the meat and potatoes of the game got scrapped. The game feels like it's missing huge chunks of missions and quests, and possibly one or two more open areas or levels. Sadly, I think that this is due to the controversy surrounding the game. I imagine that ShiftUp was having to constantly change certain things because of different executive departments saying "No" to some very obvious things. The whole censorship thing seems silly, but when you really look at it, there were way more than two outfits that were changed, and changed well before patches, etc. Many of the "revealing" outfits have what looks like half assed rendered body paint on them to appease whatever morality and decency department or clause. And for Christ's sake, there's absolutely nothing sexual about the game at all. There's no flirting, love interest type quests, no lewd or unwanted positions that Eve finds herself in, there's nothing of the sort. For the weirdos of the world to be upset that she may be showing some skin is absolutely ludicrous coming from the same people who think that full on nudity and rape scenes are perfectly okay in other forms of media. I just don't understand the way under balanced double standard for videogames. I was a kid in the 80's and 90's, listening to politicians blame videogames and music for the horrible crap that was happening in the country at the time. Nothing's changed except that now, every whack job has a voice because of social media.
I've played through the game 3x's (stupid three ending trophies....), and it's honestly one the best games that has come out in a very long while. I tried playing Elden Ring again, and because of Stellar Blade, I just couldn't. I realized that FromSoft has made the same damn game for 15 years and gotten away with it. Stellar Blade's combat, while I put lag is a thing, is a beautiful combination of hack and slash meets Souls. It just feels right, balanced, meaningful, as opposed to just rolling and rolling and rolling and rolling....
Is Stellar Blade a 9 or 10/10? Absolutely not. But I can see why the majority of players believe so when you compare it to the same recycled, agenda and mtx filled garbage that we've been forced to consume for the last decade or more. I give it an 8/10. Meaning that it's great, but needs some work in all the areas that you mentioned.

18:42 have you compared to the original Korean voice actors? Because I think Korean were the original voice actors and every other are just translations which is why sometimes they come off as dull and bland and robotic.
The only decent VAs I found were in French dubs. Korean was just shitty as the English one.

Doood the side quests suck ass. They’re like wanna be Nier stories. The enya story was so lame and predictable. What’s wrong with you ?!
apart from the terribly animated ponytail, the voice acting was just the worst part of the game. it's clear none the the VA's recieved any kind of direction at all. just lines. and then when putting them in the game they left unnatural gaps between lines.
upset that the one can i missed is the only one you cannot get back to inside spire 4 so i have to basically complete the game a second time to get that lacy reward.
I saw an interview that Rebecca Hanssen did on the Dan Allen Gaming channel and she talked about the process of it all and she was directed to record in the manner that she did. They showed some clips of her in the face rig to motion capture the lipsync animation and she talked about how they had the script showing before and after their scene so they knew context for it and that they were watching video of the scenes they were recording while they recorded so they could feel more "in character" as doing it and all of that.
I'd definitely call it a director's decision as a result.
