I like how Dark Souls made From Software into a bigger company. They managed to carve out their own niche. In the 90's and 2000's From Software used to develop a lot of bad games. Their dungeon crawlers like King's Field were fun and their modern games still feel like dungeon crawlers in a way due to great interconnected level design... Armored Core was amazing too, instead of having to go to an arcade I could just play Armored Core on my PS1 and the secrets were so much fun to find I kept replaying the levels. But I still remember their old odd games like Enchanted Arms (their take on a turn-based JRPG with recruitable monsters and you fought on a grid) and Ninja Blade (a Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry kind of game but still really fun). It might be possible that their development costs were low enough that they didn't have to sell too much to get a profit, game budgets and marketing budgets were a lot lower in the 2000's. But I just really like how From Software kept making games until they found something that worked.
Dark souls will forever be the best game I've ever played. No other game I have played or will ever play will make me fall in love with a game like dark souls did. Obsessed is an understatement. I wish I could play it for the first time again. I remember what hooked me early on was the difficulty and lack of direction.
