i think this is the only tutorial for any song where they actually tell you the speed of the delay/effects.
Nathaniel Johnson that was so cool of them. And ALL of their original gear and rigging used on the original recording
I definitely got too excited for that.. 308ms :D
Gonna try it on my Zoom effects processor later..thanks guys...love AFOS!!
very helpful,
Just a question, without that value it is difficult to find the right effect?
“I ran” released 1982 and still an epic song. Thank you for this amazing tutorial.
Little did my 14 year old self at that time know that 37 years later they'd be doing something like this.
Xul Nag , I was probably 4th grade or so. I wasn’t too big of a fan at the time , but the girl in my class who I had a crush on, was ... so I pretended to like em . But today , some 37 years later , I like and respect the band - if for no other reason than sparking memories of growing up in the 80s - a blessing.
Epic hair styles and aerosol hair spray.... ha ha.
Truly awesome to see all original members from a 38 year old band together making a vid like this. Thanks guys! Keep em coming
I love this band
And please stay healthy we need you guys for the future yessssss
This is one of the coolest things on UA-cam

Nobody can play "I Ran" as well as Paul Reynolds himself. Amazing to see him teach how to play it. Paul, Frank, Ali and Mike are all amazing musicians. The original Flock. Thanks for making this video. Loved it!
Paul Reynolds must be one of my favorite guitarists of all time. To me, a brilliant guitarist is not playing something difficult, it is about a unique contribution to a song that can only come from your mind. The idea for a vibe and a tone that sets a unique sonic characteristic that sets you apart of other players is what is brilliant about Paul Reynolds.
After buying A Flock of Seagulls album on cassette, I became an air guitar virtuoso.
Air guitar virtuoso - so how do you connect it to the Air pedal ?
Love how the lead is shadowing the bass line, almost sounding like a separate bass line.
One of the greatest songs ever written and put together by the group.
Definitely one that will run forever!
Well done lads 👍🏽
I still have the original cassette, I will never let go of the 80’s, long live AFOS!!!!!!!!!
wish more bands would do these videos, takes me back to my youth, cheers boys
Great track. Our band are gonna do this one. I'm 64 guitarist, drummer about 50ish and bass player is mid thirties. We all sing and we have a ball.
The feeling this music gave me was out of this world and hopeful at the same time. I still enjoy hearing it.
Started high school in '80. So this song was one of those life soundtracks. This song will always remind me of riding my bike and carrying my surfboard to the HB Pier before school.
Wow! Talk about the most authentic music/guitar lesson on UA-cam. Mine totally blown wow !
This just might be the best video I've seen on youtube.
The first album I ever bought from the first video I watched on MTV... that captured my attention. And one of my guitar heroes... awesome
A Flock of Seagulls LITERALLY Defined a decade of music! In that moment in the 80's, those of us growing up would have never dreamed how much of an influence both good and bad the era would have in terms of the impact on our daily lives. A Flock of Seagulls influenced music, fashion and even the art of feature films later on, one of which was (Tarantino's Pulp Fiction), which itself was a game changer in terms of how movies are made. Mike Score, Ali Score, Frank Maudsley and Paul Reynolds created a new genre almost by themselves. When those four get together it is simply magic in a bottle, no disrespect to other iterations of a F.O.S.! I find it fascinating that when certain combinations of creative geniuses get together they elevate one another to heights they couldn't have predicted or dreamed of. A Flock of Seagulls, one of the GOAT's from the 80's! One thing is for certain about this band they define the statement, NOTHING Trumps Talent!
Thanks for sharing. You guys are still awesome. This song is still fresh in 2022. A timeless classic.
Awesome! So nice of you guys to give that performance and tips on how to play your song the right way, It's such a great hit song you guys have recorded Thanks again for sharing it in this video
its great to see them still together, and what a great song
They're aren't together though. Mike tours with a totally different band lineup. These guys haven't played live together since a handful of reunion shows they did in the States in 2004. They came together on record for the "Ascension" and "String Theory" albums, but they weren't even in the studio together. They all recorded their parts separately and sent them in to be mixed.
Okay guys GREAT JOB and still sounds just like it’s 1982 and six flags over GA my first concert I think you were with The FIX!! Such great memories ❤️🙏 God bless all of you
Cool video. Thank you guys :-)
Still here, being amazed at the musicality of AFoS. Just me, my fond memories of the local disco and my Roland FA-07 following the recipe here. The ending of the intro just before the vocals is utterly majestic. It still gives me goosebumps.
Yesterday we were waiting for you in Barcelona... It was a really shame that the concert was cancelled... Maybe next Time!
Wish other great bands HAD THE STONES to do just this! Show us how it was really done! Thanks a MILLION! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍
Maguenifico música maravilhosa dê quando eu era jovem
A timeless masterpiece! I enjoy listening to it again and again!
Thank you so much Lads you are my fav band.I still play your beautiful songs today. Love Liverpool too.
this is awesome.......this was a song that transcended rockers,metal heads,new wavers,punks etc........
Esto es el epitome de los años 80, que tema más increible y que musicos de la ostia !!!
A great band, than and now 🤘
Awesome video, still as good as the times I saw you at Hammersmith Palais in the early 80’s 👏🏻👊🏼
Hi, my old man Mike, du hörst dich immer noch so geil an, wie ich dich in den 80. gehört habe!
¡Excelente! yo crecí escuchando su música, muy buena música, la mejor
Your music was awesome! And it still is!
This is so cool! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Truly Fantastic
A piece of Art.
So great song.
I could weep. Joyous. 👏👏👏
Great amazing band 👏
This is such an iconic song. Always loved it. Cant help but feel this video is better than the original music video though. Please please please tell me how much it cost to make the original music video.
They had a budget of £5,000 when they made the original video.
Cant get any better tutorial than this
Great tune
Yea it can't get much better than this!
Speechless!!!!
Lovel love love love loooooooooooooove this

Well, I guess I have a new coolest thing I’ve ever seen on the Internet.
Fan bloody tastic guys 😜
This video, iconic!!!
Thank you so much❤❤
He is right that is how it is done
So badass
Awesome
This song is simply “Perfection “ at its best. And coming from the original members is even better. Awesome. 80’s. BEST decade EVER!!!!!
The bassist is grooving like he never left the 80's. Love it
That is because he hasn't !!! And why should he?
Bass REALLY drives the song.
His rythm has been shaking hips from the 80s till now
He really does play effortlessly
None of us that lived through the 80's ever truly left it.
Pay attention, folks. THIS is how you use UA-cam.
grxengine Just had the same thought! I’d watch more than kittens if there was more content like this. Tho I do love kittens.
Yep. Not this "un-boxing" and "reaction" video rubbish. What kind of mindless NPC finds that a worthwhile use of their time to watch.
Tony Rule I’m not sure I have the answer to that one but I get it!

Winner.
Paul Reynolds is a guitar genius who has been criminally underrated.
Agreed.
Akárcsak Andy Scott.
True
Yeha
There's another one of those stupid underrated comments he is not underrated he is widely known as a great guitarist
Holy shit, if only more artists and bands did this!!!
I've been saying this for days, couldn't agree more, what a way to learn the way they did it and gel with the band and jam together at the same time, what a concept!!!!
Probably easier for them seeing it was their only hit. Great song
@@pickzkickz Wishing and Space Age Love Song, too. But this one was a monster hit.
I hear ya
They would only do it near the end of their careers. When they are still making money they wouldn't want to give their secrets away. I've heard that Peter Hook of New Order used to scrape the markings off his bass pedals so that people couldn't see how the sound was made.
Mike, I know you've played/sung that song till you are blue in the face...BUT, that song is a masterpiece. You, Ali, Frank, and Paul helped DEFINE The 1980s and THE FUTURE (as We speak and hear)...everything officially blew in to view with this classic! Thank you, Gentlemen. I'm getting your new album as a Xmas present.
Amen!
well said. Foxborough Mass. 82ish the open up for the police... awesome tune!!!
I wouldn't bother with the album. I'm a big fan but the album is a major disappointment. The best gift would be if the original four members reunited and toured, but of course Mike won't let that happen. He'll just keep plodding on with his second division FOS tribute band
Well said, Anthony! Just adding to what you wrote songs like "I Ran" was what made MTV what it was back in the 1980's. Unfortunately since about the early 1990's MTV has become a ghost of it's former self and I had to quit watching it. Now I come to UA-cam when I want to see a music video of the past. To hell with MTV!
Phayzyre105 -- Someone, a few years ago online, very correctly commented that UA-cam is the new MTV/VH1 in the 21st Century. It is truly twisted that a video here can rake up 5 million views, but the song/single will barely net repeated plays on the radio. To think that much of the original, great visual material made in the '70s, '80s, and '90s have been stowed away and relegated to MTV2 and Classic VH1 seems antithetical to what the original channels were committed to. Thank goodness for UA-cam.
Masterpiece, this is one of those rare songs that you can never have enough of it.

Eligible for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2007. Who will agree with me it’s time these guys were recognized.
This whole album is great, new wave should’ve been the future, but fizzled out.
New Wave Hall of Fame.
100%! This is the epitome of New Wave. I'll never forget the first time I heard "I Ran." Was at a record store buying Ozzy Osbourne lapel pins 🤣 when I suddenly heard that atmospheric riff. I turned around and just stared at the music video. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.
some years there is no nobel prize for literature as no one is deemed good enough. that being said having existed or even 1 or 2 hits doesnt get you into the hall fame. there should be some kind of rule. lets face it, its a popularity contest and thts not how you get into any hall of fame. is skill and musicianship. not bullshit
That Rock n' Roll 'Hall of Shame' charade DOES NOT even deserve born musical geniuses like A.F.O.S. gracing its halls. The institution is a silly cash-commerce driven joke and and has a downright embarrassing history of how it treats extremely talented Artists.
80s talent and energy, you just had to be there to understand. there will never be a time like the 80s again. we were in our prime then....Damn the time and gravity
I know, I really wish I could experience it. sometimes I just wanna restart my life in some perfect world that people seem to remember it as. I know realistically it wouldn't be all that great, but it'd really have its moments. the modern world just makes me sad. sometimes I just wanna escape most technology for a while, get some friends and just go out somewhere
One of the best songs from maybe the best musical decade.
I was thinking as I clicked on the video, imagine being 17 when this was released and hearing it for the first time.
Great song, but crap entry level video. When spinning around with the mirrors and you see the cameraman and lots of fog.
Well said
It was a glorious time and the music fitted it like a glove.
I flew out to Perth W.A in August 1982 and this was rapidly climbing the charts Down Under. Couple that with Hot in the City (Billy Idol) Dexy's etc and you realise the coming summer (Down Under) was Just...So... Perfect
Thanks for the Ch00ns AFOS. Your band was a major soundtrack of my youth.
I'm not gonna lie.....
This is seriously the coolest thing I have ever seen on UA-cam...
This song has so much going on and it all blends in perfectly.... real musicians are extremely rare these days...
@Sono2 Why do you answer your own question with a question? Do you always dig up graves to find girls to go out with? Wait, did I just do that? Did I just do that again? Aagh!!!
Its not about talent anymore just money.
@Sono2 All business is about money, the music industry are not bothered about talent in the respect they would rather focus their money on throwaway artists who they can control like puppets. Which in turn is detrimental to a diverse spectrum of talented people who create there own work.
So fucking bad ass!
Check out "One Man Genesis" as another contender
This is why there will never be a decade of music like the 80's!!! Pure awesome genius!!

It's crazy when a "how-to" video can give me, a 51 year old man goose bumps. :) An awesome band.
The hairs gone, but the music hasn’t.
Richard Graham - I know the feeling, bring back the 80s, especially as I have more time as I don’t have to worry about my hair

Square Creative and he used a damn penny for a pick. WTH!!
@A.C. B. ART what ever you say dude
@A.C. B. ART You are aware that this isn't the only song AFOS has, right? Not to mention, you make it seem like keeping things simple is "wrong" or "bad" when just about every major musician strives to do just that - keeping it simple. Some of the most famous and popular songs of all time are simple with just a few notes throughout. There's a reason this band (the original lineup) still attracts tons of positive attention, even after nearly 3+ decades of not having played together... guy...
@@RiverOfBlacklights .hell for playing simple concise riffs, and producing a multi-platinum tune....props to him!
@A.C. B. ART it was Paul's feel that made the guitar parts sound so cool
You know consistency when a band can play the same song 30+ yrs later and it sounds near perfectly identical to the original studio recording. That was excellent.
I agree on the perfectly identical on the spot it blew me away as well
40 +yrs.!!!😁😉🤭❤👍
they played this song probably over a thousand times throughout the 80s, it comes second nature to them
It was the studio recording.
There's a certain magic when the original 4 play together.
Paul's guitar playing is what made this song great.
Yep, it's fascinating how it dances around the basic groove.
@@bryede yes how genius but so simple is that counter melody of the lead in the chorus!! the best songs are so simple
Maybe I'm biased as a fellow guitar player, but I completely agree; Paul's guitar bits transformed a catchy synth pop song into an instant classic. He plays with great restraint.

@@Ed_Okin I met him about 11 years ago in his house in Norris Green Liverpool. Don’t know if he still lives there but I never recognised him and asked about all his musical equipment in the front room . He said he’d been in a band that had been quite big in the 80s in America
What an amazing time we live in, with original artists teaching us how to play their hits!
Yes. Glad you shared that thought. I also get more 80s now than I did then!
Sage, I just left a similar comment on another of FOS videos. I didn't see how colourful & vibing the 80s were till I peeked through the rearview.

285 dislikers got no sense for this genious work. It is a pure pleasure to look, listen and feel these guys playing this masterpiece. I remember when this song comes out i was a young man and i loved it from the first time i have heard it. Now, 40 years later, i am still flashed from this song.
And the idea to make this video is absolutely fantastic! Thank you guys so much! You made my day!
This video is music history. They had such a big fallout because of the stress and fame and it never seemed like in a million years they would ever collaborate again. This video is just amazing... PS I know they got together in that one show awhile ago but this video is still grand!
To never part
They did a few reunion shows in 2004, but it fell apart when they started fighting again.
Paul Reynolds still got it, love the band coming together and still have it, would love to see them live today.
You can see Mike scores flock of seagulls in UK later this year
Sadly I don't think another reunion of the original lineup is going to happen. Mike prefers his touring band, plus recent health issues with Frank (has a rare heart condition) & Paul (recovering from a stroke he suffered in early 2020, though I have heard he's doing better).
FYI, Los Angeles July 8th, 2023 free show at Pershing Square.

One band who contributed to such 80's greatness. They're the real deal
I can't help but recall a funny scene from the movie "The Commitments" when they were looking for a name for their bad. One person suggested "Flock Of Budgies" LOL.
Paul is one of the most underrated guitarist ever. This guy was 19 when he was pulling off these licks....amazing!
Thats why they hired him barely 17 y/o. He was pulling talent years earlier and they watched him, then needed him, without him there was a problem.
@@janebraun4482 A true virtuoso, not many of them these days outside of classical music
Yup, the Edge of U2 fame has credited Paul as a real influence!
If you think Paul is "underrated", you are just ignorant of the fact he has long been considered a great guitarist.
Great player yes.
"Virtuoso" might be an overstatement. Look at the tab here - not that complicated. Set the delay and a beginner can play it.
Now look at tabs at what 19 year old Jimmy Page or Jimmy Hendrix were playing. It would look like a Beethoven music sheet.
