I was in my young 20's when this came out. Oh my god Jennifer Connelly. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Now I'm 61. To the younger generation. You have no idea how fast life is once you responsibilities start. Make the best of your young years.
I was like 5... and now in my 40s. Yep.
Turning 35 in August, i swear i blinked at 19 and found myself here. WTF.. And now with 2 kids, time is going double speed
Couldn't have said it better!
Absolutely spot on 👌❤
SOOOO TRUE
I'm 59 , listening to this takes me back to where I was happiest. This by far was and is the greatest generation of music. It had feeling and dove itself into the hearts of all who lived thru the 80's. It will live on forever .❤
Very well said! My feelings exactly!
Very well said.
Agreed. I'm 59 as well. The golden age of music, to me at least, fell in-between 1964 to 1989. A great 25 year period. The Beatles started it all. Early 90's grunge was the last really interesting genre of music, it's been a slow painful slide downward since then. But that is my opinion.
I'm 55 and it seems we all remember when MTV actually played videos.
A therapist will actually agree that 80s music is far more uplifting than the autotuned rubbish released today. Born 76, so glad I got to be an 80s kid :)
I'm 54 now... I wanna be young again.
❤
U can I am a little older than you and I look like I am in My 30's. I am in a special
Swiss regime of pills and injections ~ all my wrinkles are gone and developed more muscles an my hair is thicker and shinner plus doing these special stretches while listening to special ~ healing frequency and this song is in that frequency 😮😂🎉!
I'm getting ready to turn 50 on April 17th. Flock of seagulls are all bald like me. Damn, to much aqua net hairspray
same...and same
Be young in your heart❤
I'm 57..to everyone else who grew up in the 80's you are awesome we had so much fun.
Yes we did. Glad I was born in this generation. Such amazing music. Just bought Miami Vice on BluRay, half the reason was for the music.
Thank the maker we grew up in a time where we didn't have the opportunity to record ourselves doing dumb shit! How many more times would we have gotten in trouble if we had the chance to record everything we did.
I'm 52 here, wouldn't trade a second of the 80's...still listening!
IF I COULD JUST GO BACK FOR THE MUSIC, MOVIES, PRICES, AND CAREFREE TIMES .
This song is a damn masterpiece
I agree a thousand percent
Yes!
Truly
especially when it's used in a jennifer connelly opportunity knocks tribute video
It was a grand masterpiece back then....somehow the Gulls managed to improve upon it. :D
God created 80's music for us growing up because he knew we would need it again someday, this takes me back to a much simpler time
Wall phones - No internet- earth weed- free without a care. Hope and dreams.
Amen
Those are your rose tinted glasses Talking again.
Damn
Hell yes 👍
I love how happy the bassist is to be here. All smiles, warms my heart.
Frank Maudsley is the man :-)
Yes he is obviously having the best time and loving it. I'm not surprised it's brilliant 😊
80’s,,, wow those of us there didn’t realise how lucky we were with the music then
same for us late 70's babies who understood this th entire time thanks to those 80's kids we wished we were vs well maybe vice versa
Born in '72, got to enjoy all of it.
Paul Reynolds still doesn't miss a beat. He plays like he's 18 years old again and back on tour in the 80s. He is such an awesome guitarist. 🎸
God yes!!! He is phenomenal!
True! Take away The Edge's digital delay pedal and he's nothing compared to Paul.
He was 14 or 15 when he joined AFOS! Amazingly talented boy at the time. Listen to his work on It's Not Me Talking.
he needs to get back into the studio with others.. *HINT HINT* :D
@@humansRAdiseasePaul was 17 years old when he joined. He still looks good. Nature has been kind to him.
1000% agreed. The 80’s will never be duplicated, greatest time ever.
Fantastic time to grow up. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I could.
Agreed..
70s>60s>80s>90s
agreed. Too bad the Millenials will ONLY listen to Rap and Pop. SAd.
Yeah i loved the 80s .
I'm 59 and listening to this makes me feel young again! I loved A Flock of Seagulls and I absolutely loved the 80's!!!
I'm the same age and we were the 80s
AFOS was an incredibly talented band and still are amongst the greatest. Their music echos through time.
I'm 42 and listening. I absolutely love it
I'm 34 wishing I lived the 80s like you did
Hells yeah!!!!! 80s was the best for music! So many different genres i was introduced to: speed, death, thrash metal ! Punk, hardcore, crossover and new wave! Thanks 80s but, you can keep your fashions. Mind blowing for a little town hick kid from a little hick town in Ashtabula ,Ohio!!!!!
Unfortunately they don't make music like this anymore. I wish they did. Flock of Seagulls Forevermore!!!
Still sounds better than anything new on the radio
listen to Kings of Leon
@@nikkobetsbets7790 Kings of Leon is good but not good as AFOS ✌🏼

My mom passed away two years ago and every time I've heard my dad listening to this he's cried about her. And now in turn I cry thinking of my mother and just how much they loved eachother.
Edit: today is the third anniversary of her passing.
Both sad and beautiful at the same time. 🥺
💕
@Nate_TheSniper 14, my Dad died this year, I can say I have witnessed that type of love, witnessing it in my Mom and Dad, and you with your parents. Peace be with you and your Dad.

It is almost 2021 and I'm still listening to this masterpiece. Gives me the chills.
Once a week - at least - for me!
Everyday in for me!!! Flock on!!!!
Dec 24,2020 🤷🏽♂️ I was 13 in 1982.. 🕶🎸 still playing guitar since I was 5... I need a keyboard. I make my sons laugh because they’re drummers but I have a electronic drumkit to capture that 80s vibe..I just say, I play this and time machine back to before-I-had-kids fun 😂
@@powwowrokstar good stuff. Share the wealth with the younglings. We have hope.
Absolutely, brilliant 80s techno rock married to a fabulous orchestral back up. Better than the original... dare I say?!
I remembered seeing my brother in the car singing this when we would be going down the road, i lost him at 35,i was 32. It devestated me. And then lost my dad and best friend, that was 24 years ago and its 2024 today. I cant believe i survived
Thank goodness you did, they all live on through your memories and now you have shared those memories.
A beautiful thing to do.
Losing people you love is the hardest thing.
We will think of you when singing and headed down the road.
Glad u made it
Funny how the hair goes, the looks go...the talent endures.
TheBatugan77 so true!
Just as good. Age improves us all. Just turned 60. I would love to go back just for one day to see old friends now departed..
@David H. I don't think so
I think they look a heck of alot better! Let's hear it for us, extremely, beautiful bald bastards!!
@TheBatugan77
2 out of 3 ain’t bad at all...still got the look...think of them as a fine bottle of wine....matures and improves with age!🤗
The orchestra adds an amazing depth to this song.
Definitely! Some bands achieved super status AFTER doing their big hit at that time with the full orchestra
Lifts it up to the next level.
Just great.
The orchestra adds a poignant emotional element to this simple yet beautiful song
Agreed
Paul Reynolds' melodies are underrated. So uncluttered yet so beautiful. He's doing in 3 notes what it takes other guitarists 1,000 notes to accomplish: that feeling.
YES!!! I have always said since 83 he’s one of the most underrated guitarists of the decade. Thank you for that
@@groomingdalesjax Totally agree!!!! One of a select group of guitarists who seems to know that "less is more" and that you don't need to be showy to be a good player
Agreed... the bands of this time really knew how to use the guitar as a melodic instrument
@@groomingdalesjax fuck yes ! So underrated
Yes indeed Paul is a great guitarist ! One of my favorites ,!
I showed this video to my oldest daughter, 31, and she says this is their best song, hands down...and she doesn't know why it doesn't get as much air play as "I Ran". This version almost brought me to tears. ❤️
You gave them the ultimate accolades and brings conclusion to a great chapter in life.
Pp
Probably due to the ties between certain labels and who owns the stations. Oingo Boingo also gets no airtime
Agree💯
It gets a fair amount of air play now due to it's appearance in the GTA franchise, but still not enough as it should get. I remember it got played heaps when it first came out in the 80's. Those were the days!
Every time I hear this song I see Jennifer Connelly. Long live the 80s!
As much as I love the Target version, I pretty much watch this one exclusively. Seeing them playing it and the orchestra give it a special feel. Their mannerisms are still there. Great stuff.
at that time was sexy...now it's perplexity with a side dish of memories.
Not a bad image 😉
She has aged like this song , exceedingly well.
exactly....
Truly a crime how Paul is never mentioned in the annuals of great guitarists … from ‘I Ran’ to ‘Space Age …’ & ‘The More You Love …’, iconic riffs that have stood the test of 40 years
Frank's bass playing is also underrated. You don't realize how complicated the riffs are until you start to transcribe it.
Years ago I took the non verse parts of _Over The Border_ and turned it into a completely different song (at half speed.)
Such beautiful souls, I get tingles every time when I hear this song. Such a beautiful song 🎧 about falling in love. Heaven sent.
Es uno de los mejores guitarristas, del mundo
Su estilo es diferente se puede encasillar como(charlie burchill, simple minds o the edge de U2
I love how the bass player is just grinning from ear to ear during this take. He's truly enjoying being resurrected again! They sound perfect!
That was his hernia playing up.
The eighties were a magical time
Frank has always been that way
Forever young.. thru music.. greatest song ever this ... ❤️❤️❤️
That's Frank for you. He was always the "happy go lucky" one.
Love this video. MTV was my escape. I'm 57. Long live the 80s. 😊
The best part of this is seeing Paul Reynolds back on guitar. He was just a kid when the original came out but he had his own style that fit the band to a tee.
Could not have said it better.
You know you're a good guitarist when you have two solos in a song.
mitchell baker I like the smile on the bass players face. I know how much fun he’s having to have that grin like that. Music will do that
@@Alundrahs Frank Maudsley. Did you see him for the Band's Reunited episode? Really a cool guy. I think he was the one who tried to ease tensions between band members. ua-cam.com/video/VmjZ_SJna14/v-deo.html
I had the pleasure of meeting Paul just after he and the band had completed this, a very unassuming, modest man, I hope he's doing well.
i can't believe how much the opening minute of this song moves me. it's like longing and reverie and sadness and immense joy all at the same time.
doug sanchez great summary. Thats exactly it
I can watch it over and over...
If you like that guitar and instrumental check out original for sure.
Couldn't have said it better

Back when he had blond hair.... I remember!
From ear to ear... :-))
Well put sir. I remember them well and this was one of my favorite tunes, simple yet perfect. Also you are correct about another thing, I am still smiling. This song takes me back.

Precious memories of when I was young. I just turned 50 this year 2023...💃
Still looks as good as this song sounds
You are still young
You're 6 years older than my 2nd oldest child, and you were about the same age I was when The Beatles hit America. You're still
young but its always good to look back at great memoties, don't forget them.
1973 was a good year almost as good as '71😉
Love it. Great to see Paul back on guitar where he should be

I use to call Paul the boy genius , some of his live performances were spectacular ,when he was on top of his game ! This was amazing ! Me and me brother would travel a thousand miles to see them when they were in the states !
The Last Guitar Hero Paul named this tune as well 👍🏻

Donnie Darko They look older than I would expect. Paul is maybe 57. But their sound is ageless
They look better now.
I accually had tears coming down my face hearing this. Brought back me being 18 again. That version is bad ass. Killer guys.
I had that urge but, fought it.
well there hairdo changed a lot since the 80s, but it is still a great band.
Made me cry also...listening to this is like riding in a time machine and being transported back to my youth... they were so under-rated.
The grammy they won for this version was well deserved. It's an incredibly beautiful song and I cannot believe it's 40 years old. I was in middle school when their hit Wishing ( I had a photograph) made its way onto the USA's airwaves and I've thanked the band ( in my heart and soul) every single day since then. Those of us who were blessed to be at the age when music was becoming just as influential to who we'd become as the hormones that were kicking in. My 80s musical taste comprised of the iconic sounds of New Wave, Punk, New Romantic, and Death Rock which all became part of my DNA. I am unapologetically proud to say that I am a card-carrying Gen Xer. I cannot wait to see you in February 2023!!
I freaking LOVE being a Gen Xer!! The greatest Gen!
Yep and I ran was probably the only song that most degenerates remember from this crew. I'm 49 and Bald like the rest of them. That doesn't have anything to do with shit, just saying
I was on board with the band from the beginning and got all their albums through the Columbia House club. As much as I loved all their previous work, *The Story Of A Young Heart* is there opus that I adored.
Gentlemen...life is so short! It is an honor to see you men put your differences aside and make awesome music!
I think it's Mike's band these days and he has other musicians playing with him,he calls the shots and it's a pity because the original boys look well up for it.
I think his brother filmed his part remotely. 🤔
@@rw8733 Yeah because Ali I believe still lives in America (when Vh1 tracked him down for Bands Reunited in 2003, he was living in North Carolina).
@@gregobrien4384 Well this was filmed back in 2018. Since then, Paul suffered a stroke in early 2020 and I heard Frank has health issues himself.

All music played with an orchestra sounds so much better… it is ridiculous.
Goosebumps! This brings tears to my eyes in a good way.
It made me tear up as well. Wish I had a time machine.
Such a beautiful song
I'm not the only one with tears
I was good right up until the 2:45 mark. I've always liked classical string instrumentals, and combined with my fave FoS song, it was almost too much. Kids today can only hope their music ages as well as this does, but I doubt most of it will.
like wise, so miss the 80's.
I heard this song and it made me smile. And for a little while I was feeling so young.
Thanks Mike, Ali, Frank and Paul.
Hey Rev... if you felt young inside it still means you ARE young at heart... and that’s what counts 🤗
It reminded me of my senior year of HS and the show. Thank you junior Sweethearts! You had a great number and danced superbly!

Me to bro
Paul Reynolds is such an under appreciated and under rated guitarist. His riffs made those songs. This has always been a great song. Nice to see them back together.
I think U2 nicked a bit off these guys... I want to run...listen ✌️
i agree with some of your point..but lets not get carried away..he is not 'under rated'...wish people would think a little before using that label
Perhaps not underrated, but unappreciated. Great guitar player of his era that few mention.
@@thinkFishcatchFish I could not agree more. I was sitting here thinking the same thing as i was listening to this.
Listen to the Edge's guitar tone. He was definitely influenced by Paul Reynolds playing style and made a unique version of playing of his own. All musicians are influenced by someone. Honestly, it's the greatest form of flattery one can give.

This new album is a great gift to us, the "old" people. It is a breath of fresh air coming from the past. And I hope it will contribute to make the younger generation realize that popular music doesn't have to be fogy, vulgar and depressing. Can't wait to hear the new versions of *Wishing* and *I ran.*

MusicalBox I ran covered by Mr Andrew Paul Woodworth of 90s band Elephant Ride. Like this song, Elephant Ride's "Wash Me"is so haunting...
Paul Reynolds is still kickin ass on the guitar. Certainly a masterpiece!
60 years old and I'm pretty close to tears, how beautiful is this to see and hear.
Brother, you’re right about that.
AFOS is the only band, other than Metallica and Gary Numan, that I'VE seen make such good music with an orchestra. I know others than they have done it, but I didn't expect to hear AFOS with an orchestra. Sounds like another dimension is added to their already multi-dimensional music. Things like this should happen more often in music.

The bass player Frank Maudsley always played with a smile on his face. Good to see that in his mid-60's he's still a happy looking dude. I'm a year older than Paul Reynolds and I'm glad to see that it looks like he got through his addiction and mental health issues when he was in his early/mid-twenties. It’s pretty awesome to see that Paul is back and at it! What an underrated guitarist. He had an amazing sound. 🕊🎸
Started listening to AFOS two years ago when I was 14. They’re such an underrated 80s band.
Transferaffection Yes "Transfer Affection" has always been one of my favorites. Also LOVE "What am I supposed to do" from that one as well.
So underrated my Dad who grew up in the 80's and listens to bands like OMD had never heard of A Flock of Seagulls
C Austen woah! I honestly wish I was a teenager back then, their concerts seemed awesome.
+Transferaffection they were and nothing, absolutely nothing like today's concerts. It was all about the band. You kids of today have absolutely no idea what you missed and don't let mom and dad fool ya,we were all dancing our asses off
It's a shame modern music is trash. I'm 25 and most of the stuff I listen to is from the 80's
If you were not there experiencing the 80s as they were, you will never understand just how great it was. It ruly was the greatest decade ever. I have this bands vinyl record on the turntable now. Original record from the 80s not a reissue.
52 year old 6'4 250 lb man here tears falling down my face
unclegeemus why?
unclegeemus I share that! I'm so happy. 😢
55yr old man - same!
For me it brings back not only first love, but being on my own at age 19, coming out, falling in love with my life partner (36 years now); the horror and sadness of the AIDS crisis in the 80s, etc......It is all wrapped up in this song, that makes me feel like I have had a great life, even though it was painful getting here (age 55). joy
Adolescents and young memories of great times with friends and family no longer here..
54 yrs old and for a minute thought I was 18yrs old again..
2018.. I'm 53 now. To see this is nothing less than amazing and truly welcome. You guys are awesome!!!!!
I know! 53! How did that happen?
I'm 52 and it's still Narley. I love A Flock of Seagulls !!
Djannon Holderly I TURNED 53 IN JUNE OF THIS YEAR!!!......THIS SONG PLAYING ON THE CAR RADIO IN '81 LATE AT NIGHT....GOT MY 16 YEAR OLD WEENIE PLENTY OF ACTION.....MY GOD! THE GIRLIES LOVED THIS SONG!......HELL THE GUITARIST (PAUL "RENO" RENOLDS) WAS JUST A LATE TEEN HIMSELF IN 1981!!!.......THIS WAS A BIG PART OF THE REASON HE DEVELOPED A BAD DRINKING PROBLEM!!.....THANK GOD HE IS STILL WITH US!......HE WAS, STILL IS AN AXE PRODIGY!......TOO BAD HE IS NOT SHREDDING THE STRINGS OF THAT GIBSON "FIREBIRD V" THAT HE HAD BACK THEN!!......
Another 52 here. Didn't get to see them originally, but I did see them when the briefly reunited thanks to VH1. Was at the Hard Rock Cafe in New Orleans in the front row. At one point Paul tried to give my (now ex) wife his guitar pick, but she refused thinking he still needed it... They were so on point that night, it's too bad they soon parted ways (and thankfully not for good)
I am 50. I was and like to think that I still am their #1 fan. Flock of Seagulls. How many of you all attempted to dress like them? I know I did in jr.high & highschool :D
Now this is the way the fans love it.The only true original lineup.
The true beauty of this song was its staggering simplicity. It’s already a classic, no orchestra required.
I’m so damn grateful I grew up during the 80’s. I got to see Star Wars as a kid and bought my first car in ‘86, all to the soundtrack of some of the best music ever recorded. It was so good, I learned how to build car stereo systems long before it became cool in the 90’s.
It’s simply impossible to properly convey just how much fun they were to experience, now that we survived them. My first job was at McDonald’s, when the food tasted so much better than today. Marlboros were $1 a pack and smoking them was still cool. We still got side eye for smoking in school parking lot, which made it even cooler!
Despite living thru all the dramatic change of the digital and internet ages, we ended up in some dark times. 😕
Some things were still only 75¢ lol
At around the 2:25 mark, they really start bringing in the Orchestra and it takes things to another level. I'm listening to this for about the 20th time in a row tonight and the tears won't stop flowing. This is magic.
Paul Reynold’s guitar lines +orchestra lines=amazing audio!
Everyone who lived through the decade knows that there were really two 80s: the early 80s, a time of expanding boundaries and exploring the unknown, and the late 80s, a time of increasing conformity and narrowing options. To me, this song is one of the anthems of the early 80s -- half science, half mystery, and all magic. It's good to have you still with us and making music, boys -- you helped define an era, and we'll never forget.
Meh. I was there, and the "narrowing options" were nothing more than the shift away from New Wave and toward Glam/Hair Metal, which gave us even greater and more diverse musicality that peaked with Appetite for Destruction and Dr Feelgood, which then got crushed by Nirvana. Music evolves, as do musical tastes.
Agreed. I really noticed it starting in 87 but it may have been even earlier.
@@rapid13 The 90's were absolutely horrible. I swore off rock and pop music in the 90's and switched almost exclusively to country, which to me, was closer to 80's pop and rock.
@@atarileaf I did the same: Randy Travis, Pam Tillis, Reba, Dwight Yoakam, Clint Black, John Anderson, The Mavericks, Aaron Tippin, Alan Jackson, Restless Heart, Marty Stuart, Diamond Rio.....now they're getting older, too !
We just can not stop time, dagnabbit !
All I listen to now is rock from the 60s, 70s, 80s, early 90s & country from 60s to 90s.
Our parents told us, time & time again, - life is short !
AtariLeaf I agree I always thought 1985 was the end of an era 86-87 was like a different world
Tears fill my eyes when I hear this...🥲 Back in the 80's was the best Time of my Life...!!!
Paul Reynolds. Underrated guitar legend. Such a shame the pressure and fame overwhelmed his sensibilities for a period. God Given Talent. This is how they play guitar riffs in heaven :)
Guitar hero!
Paul Reynolds is still ALIVE...He should start a UA-cam Channel...how to play guitar, something about one of his hobbies, it doesn't matter....I would SUBSCRIBE! He seems to be a Kind and Talented Soul.
It really looks like they are having a great time on this video Paul is one of the best guitar player's ever
I am also a big fan of Paul Reynolds -- definitely under-appreciated
Paul Reynolds is happy in Liverpool running a bed and breakfast. Awww the little things he is happy with, compared to almost yearly booking dates in his heyday. At least he was alive and well on MTV'S band's reunite show taped in mid to late 2000s.
The Orchestra did a fantastic job with this song. aFoS still have their voices. Love it.
This version is superb. And Yep Paul Reynolds is a legend not only as a person but a guitar player. He has a one of kind sound the things he can do with a guitar A+ talent
Patricia Richardson he's playing a three note triad = not hard . Uses a lot of delay = not hard
@@CAVERN1234 You obviously don't understand how talented Paul Reynolds is. Many Uber famous "guitar gods" were influenced by Reynolds guitar work. The guys talent is respected in the guitar world. He was a child prodigy back in the day. It isn't like his whole body of work is a three note triad with delay. And, going on 40 years later, that 3 note triad with delay is STILL being emulated by guys all over the place in garages and basements and other places. Kindly take your snarky comments elsewhere.
@@CAVERN1234 at the bottom of the neck, where is your video?
@@DaveMiller2 I sometimes wonder what would have been if Paul had not broken down. His body of work would have been much larger, I think he would have played a lot of sessions as well.
The Score brothers aren’t doing too badly either! Ali still banging away on the drums... how old are they all now does anyone know?
Still listening 2024
Fighting cancer now and crying this is so beautiful. Also love Frank's subtle nostalgic dance move at 3:11.
Hope you win that fight!
Good luck, take care pal
eat apricot seed …. you beat the cancer
Never give up Steve! My prayers is with you. Don't eat any meat(animal) products, stay positive. You can beat this beast.
Praying for your Victory!!
Paul Reynolds is a Legend. The Riffs . He incredible
Great player up their with that lad Will from that other Liverpool band what were they called again? class tune ,perfect pop
Pauls riffs make the Gulls sound so individual ..it’s just so Awesum
