This is very usable EV range. My wife loves her 2020 XC60, but I’m not sure she would go for one with significantly less storage space for the driver - that’s her main complaint now. That’s without the wireless phone charger taking up a small storage spot, and without the battery taking up more of the under-armrest storage.
I currently have a 21 XC60 and utterly love it!! My next car will be a 24 XC60 plug in hybrid. That model year will be a refreshed model with different trims (no more Momentum, Inscription, and R Design). It will also have a bump to around 50 miles of all electric range. This extended range one is nice with 35 miles, but I can't wait for the 2024 model!!
I would like to know where you got the '50 mile range' from, because that hasn't been announced by Volvo. The different named trims are coming in MY 2023:core, plus, or ultimate, with choice of bright or dark trim.
@@fbp452 Right, I've not seen that figure either, but it makes sense that they'd be going in that direction. Porsche has said the same thing (they also have an 18-kWh battery in their E-Hybrids now, and announced that they'll have an all-electric range of 80 km "soon"). Volvo needs to get their electronics right first, though; I'd rather have a 35-mile-EV-range XC60 with great electronics than a 50-mile-EV-range XC60 with the crappy, unreliable electronics they have now.
These xc60 actually have 40 miles of range… and will actually get much more than that. Volvo is underestimating these. My 21 standard range s60 says I should only get 23 miles of range. I typically get 29-32 miles. My wife drives it and doesn’t charge for half her work trip. Still manages 60+ mpg. The new xc90 gives 40+ miles of range, so the lighter xc60 is already likely able to do 50+
9:27 - 9:37 Exactly! for me those seats alone would be enough to go for volvo instead of rav4/nx models... i wish more manufacturers would follow this trend (i also love the luxurious fabric trim in range rovers...)
i love xc60, and i LOOOVE those NOT-LEATHER wool seats!!! however, alex, unlike you said, cargo space (under the floor) is compromised.... no spare wheel because of the different arangment of components.
Unfietunately, many automakers have been deleting spare tires. I get it - they take up space and add weight, but aren't used that often. In dense nations where people don't drive long distances that's reasinable. In the US, especially the West, it can be a problem. Nobody wants to be towed for an hour to the nearest town, where there may not be a tire of the right size, so you're stuck there overnight. I can remember that happening in my childhood, though those waits were for more complex parts, as there were very few tire sizes (1960s).
To me this makes perfect sense! Everyone knows that electric vehicles limits are its strengths, battery power. An engine be it gas or diesel is a perfect match to an electric drive train as you get the best of both worlds.
@@mark_r49 When public-charging stations are as ubiquitous and reliable as gas stations are today, then you'll see an "end game" of getting rid of ICEVs... Not until then...
@@panameradan6860 I agree, infrastructure is needed for the EV revolution. I also believe that a wireless charging pad for EVs should be a researched technology. This way multiple cars can charge on one pad at a charging station. But of course, this might be something that'll probably be 20 or 30 years into the future.
I always have a feeling that the style of Volvo interior is just like the Ikea design of a living room. Now, with the new 'seats' style, Volvo gives you an Ikea sofa instead of a 'chair' while you're driving on the road. For a road trip, what can be a better feeling when you bring your whole living room design, an Ikea sofa, and Google Assistance together with you? It's nothing fancy or palatial, but it really makes you familiar, comfortable, and peaceful. Volvo's owners, probably, are never the upstarts, but always the ones who love their life and the family.
Trying to buy one of these is a nightmare. None of the dealers I called in my area would let me test drive one (one of them even called it a unicorn), all of them wanted markup (or forced add-ons like tint and paint protection for several thousand) and most didn't even have allocations for months.
Thanks Alex. As usual great coverage of the vehicle. Surprised there is no recline positions on the XC60 for rear seats yet? My kids would have a hard time sleeping in the back if there is absolutely no degree of adjustments. Its ridiculous they haven't thought about this in an expensive vehicle like this. Had to pass this for a Santa Fe few years ago and now again disappointment.
Alex, you’re the man when it comes to car reviews. I’m a big fan and love your work. However, I think you should reconsider your comment on Volvo not having power steering column adjustment. I saw another reviewer that attributes it to a safety concern and his explanation comports with the brands reputation. Given your contacts with manufacturers could you please verify with Volvo why they made this choice? I think your viewers would appreciate your authoritative confirmation (and I think the choice has nagged you for years too as I think you have mentioned it on reviews of prior years models). I can’t help but think this distinction from other competitors hasn’t escaped Volvo and they must have a rationale for having consistently held their position. Thank you for your brilliant work.
You have a one track mind dude. Lexus is far superior to Volvo. You will quickly get to know your Volvo repair shops if you buy one. You just spam every review video out there with your Lexus hate, it’s embarrassing for you.
@@sammydavis991 if I BOUGHT a luxury car I’d go Lexus. Or better yet save cash and get a Toyota and have my maintenance done at a Lexus dealership Unfortunately for you most luxury cars are LEASED. Not to mention the Volvo does literally everything better. Style to interior to tech to handling to ride to performance to comfort to luxury to value. This is even cheaper than the nx PHEV while being more spacious and way faster with the same ev range
The Acura RDX is honestly way more luxurious than the XC60 Im not even gonna bring the Genesis GV70, Lincoln Nautilus, BMW X5 or Audi Q5 into this conversation
The NX does reliability and fuel economy better. Those two things win a lot of people over. It just depends on your preferences. Also, the infotainment in the Lexus is also better imo.
3.3kW, that's unfortunate. It'd be nice to get a decent free recharge when out and about and using complementary L2 chargers. If it was 11kW, it could be topped off in about 90 minutes -- perfect for charging while shopping or something. Also great if you're frequently heading out and returning home. Come home, top it off before you head out in another hour. We pop out for a 30+ mile drive several times a day.
A higher charge speed may be coming in model year 2023, so ~6 months away. Maybe they couldn't/wouldn't make that change in the middle of the 2022 model year.
Very good review of the updated (2022 1/2 ?)model.I have one on hold, and it is a Q Ship.About shopping:The competition mentioned-Lexus 450h+ and particularly the Audi Q5 PHEV- are almost impossible to find at least here in AZ.CA dealers have so few of these cars they are not selling out of state and some are gouging e.g. forcing you to buy a load of dealer installed “options”,some of which are just hilarious. One Lexus dealer told me “he only sells to residents of San Diego county”-he had one car and many takers locally. The Toyota dealer here in Tucson had 260 people on a waitlist for the Rav 4 Prime,so any car that qualifies for the Tax break is scarce here.I won’t even get into the frenzy over the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but to say that I bought this Volvo for the same price as a well optioned version of that car.Hyundai dealers I have dealt with were actually the worst for the overages, fake orders, etc. It’s a nice, novel car,but seriously, get over yourselves.
The reason they do not have a power steering column is because every Volvo is standard with knee airbags. And because of that it takes up to much room for the power stearing column. I think that's a better trade off.
as somebody driving the current gen Volvo PHEV the changes i am seeing in this 2022 model feel like logical improvements to me. i was worried Volvo would give up on PHEV in favor of full EV but i'm glad to see they keep improving it.
Hey Alex, typically you point out whether rear turnsignals flash yellow or red. You didn't do it for this new xc60 ( unless i missed it). Older xc60 had red flash in US (other countries have yellow or "orange"). I googled the question & failed. Do u know if new 2022 volvo xc60 recharge have yellow flashing rear turnsignals,?
This is such a huge improvement in powertrain! I've always loved the Volvo plug-ins but they were way too complicated. The prospect of owing a turbocharged, supercharged PHEV out of warranty is very daunting. Nice to see at least one of those elements being removed, and they've been doing 4 pot turbos for a while so hopefully this will inspire more consumer confidence in this drivetrain configuration. Hope this configuration makes its way to the V60 and V90 PHEVs soon as well. Now to wait for them to get cheap enough for us to actually afford...
I wish that "journalist" reviewers like this would take the time to check out owner forums online before posting these UA-cam videos, to see what issues are being widely reported. In this case (2021-2022 XC60 PHEVs), there are widespread, common, random GPS failures (meaning that Google Maps doesn't work) and also that the 12-volt battery dies if you don't drive it for several days (an issue even noted in the owner manual -- particularly embarrassing of a bad design). So if you ever leave your car undriven for a week or so, don't buy these vehicles unless you enjoy jump-starting them..
@@cbatiau2528 12 volt batteries can do that on any vehicle. I don't know why this would be any different. The Google Automotive system is still new, but simple updates will fix bugs and add features. Anyhow, this is not the 2021-2022 model, but instead the new replacement 2022 model with several big upgrades. I wish they had just called this one a 2023.
@@markmiller3279 I have never heard this happening in any car before; it should never happen with a new battery/new car (a 5-year-old battery, maybe, but even then that's a rare experience in my decades of driving)... And I have heard this happening in pre-ER XC60s, quite a bit... It's a red flag that 12-volt batteries die if the car isn't driven for a week or two; many people leave their cars undriven for a week or two and do not come home to dead batteries... This is unheard-of in a new car/new battery, but seems so common in the new Volvos that the owner's manual warns about it... No excuse for an automaker to put out an inferior design like that.
For the first few years reliability shouldn’t matter. Any car can be reliable for the first 5-7 years Plus ICYDK the 8 speed transmission Volvo uses is from Aisin, Toyotas transmission company. Plus I think it’s the same 8 speed used in thr NX RX Camry Rav4 Highlander ES
How was the ride quality, Alex? With the air suspension did you feel riding on clouds? I have Sorento PHEV and still looking for an SUV with more sophisticated suspension system for better ride quality.
I sell these. The xc60 with air ride feels fantastic, and I do recommend it. However, if you were looking at the xc90, I cannot feel a difference other than when the car raises or lowers itself. Hope this helps.
The V60 and XC60 recharge are my idea of an electrified car. Volvo has it rolling now and that cloth interior adds to what is the nicest interior of about anything at or above its price point or class. I’d love to go to Goteborg on the Overseas Purchase and get my break in miles in Europe before shipping it home. Great classy car and I currently own two MBs.
I worry about the fabric seats pilling. I’m also miffed that the XC60 doesn’t have that smart cargo divider that the XC40, XC90, and even the Polestar have. What’s up with that? BTW, what did the chip shortage take away? Massage functionality? Ventilation on the leather?
Really appreciate your review on the 2022 Volvo XC60 Extended Range plug in hybrid, is their any chance you will get your hands on the T8 Polestar version. Most of the videos on the Polestar version are two years old and adolescent.
I absolutely LOVE this. But I normally buy vehicles to keep for 10 years or longer. I just hope it'll be reliable and durable. If Toyota made a Highlander with similar specs then I'd be all over that. However, an air suspension is so nice, it really gives a nice luxurious feel to a drive. I've always admired Volvo vehicles, including the semis. Looking forward to the full review Alex.
Not a vehicle to own outside of warranty... I'd buy an extended warranty if I were going to keep it beyond factory warranty, but I wouldn't do either...
Thank You for very good review - Just purchased XC60recharge extended...have question on using external media players ...You have some (?media player) plugged in USB visible from back seat.. wondering how this will work as the Volvo disabled USB ports for data upload and only work for charging.
Alex, you do a great job packing and organizing copious information into your videos. One datapoint I'd love to see added is the location of manufacturing/assembly. For example, I really like the new Volvo "Extended Range" PHEV powertrains; however, I do not want to buy a car from a Chinese company. I'm willing to make exceptions if the vehicle is assembled in the US or a democracy-friendly country.
Alex (or anyone), can you let us know which options are not available right now due to chip shortages/availability? He mentioned this early in the review.
Hi Alex, I live up north (fairly fast paced life). My mind just gives up trying to keep up.(at times) ( like I said, it's not like I live south(e.g.. Jamaica). About a third of your content is lost. Have you had complaints in the past that you talk to slow?? I love the content. It gets old having to replay everything 2 or 3 times. Thanks for the content. I hope others aren't having similar issues.
I frequently have to replay 10 or 20 seconds of video that I'm interested in, where there's a lot of information. But I have no problem with speed as long as the information is there, and Alex does a great job that way. Replaying the previous 10 seconds is no problem, and often I'll freeze a frame to read his figures posted for a vehicle...
Thanks for the review Alex. How would you stack up the XC60 recharge vs the Q5 TFSIe or the Lexus NX on road noise? Anyone of them particularly more quiet than the others?
7:10 The reason it has a manual tilt telescoping steering wheel is for safety; if the electrical system gets damaged in an accident the wheel can still be moved out of the way to facilitate exit of the vehicle.
Most interesting Volvo for me in a decade. Hope the new seat material catches on with other manufacturers and does not have the issues Rover Land Defender owners cry about. I believe Volvo will tell you that is a "head restraint " not a head rest. Hence, not adjustable.
Alex … Any idea how many years it will be before the XC60 is fully EV? I’m afraid I’ll probably end up getting the Audi Q4 EV (which is fine by me) waaay before Volvo brings the XC60 EV 🤨
Awesome review Alex, well done Sir. I gotta say, the XC60 is a spectacular car. It offers more space than the XC40, without being a land barge like the XC90 (although if I had the space I would get an XC90). I am waiting for the XC90 full ev to be released and I will be a very happy camper. I auditioned the XC40 full ev, and was in awe. The sound system was incredible, best I have ever listened to in a car, the acceleration and interior quality were equally fantastic and befitting of a premium priced car. The only area that I thought it was lacking was the interior space, but this was splitting hairs. An XC40 would be fine for most folks, but I ferry large people (~ 7 feet) from time to time.
@@mavsguy842 Yeah, apologies, I meant to say: ''I am waiting for the XC60 full ev to be released and I will be a very happy camper .." Absolutely I will option every speaker that Volvo has available for it. I value great sound so after hearing the XC40, and that had the high spec audio, I was sold on Volvo being the gold standard for OEM audio right now. Interestingly, I auditioned the current Mercedes S class the day prior, and said to sales guy "the sound has to have my jaw hitting the ground or no sale", he fiddled trying to get it sounding great, but it was mediocre at best after several attempts at trying to get the best out of it, it was probably pushing about 150db, the windows vibrating, the guy had this thing cranked, all the folks in the dealership looking over my way for some sort of concert taking place ... and i am like yawn .. I have heard way better lol. Mercedes sound is ok, but Volvo is far superior in my opinion.
I'm cross shopping the Subaru Ascent and the Volvo XC90 AWD T8 Recharge Extended Range. I can get the Subaru Ascent with a $17k loan or I can get the Volvo XC90 with a $39k loan. I'm just not sure if $22k more for the Volvo is worth it.
The xc90 will be closer to the x5. Just had a customer trade in his x3 PHEV…. He bought in Dec and due to BMW’s battery issue, he hasn’t had it since January.
Nice preview of a promising plug-in hybrid vehicle. The only thing that I don’t like is the choice of a small infotainment screen by Volvo for all of its newer vehicles.
I agree... I would like to see them go landscape-mode on their infotainment screens, while still integrating them into the dashboard as they do now. These screen sizes are the same that they've had for years, and they look very dated ... The Google Maps do not appear bright and crisp; they should endeavor to make them look more like they look on my laptop or my iPhone...
As always…great information…I’m really torn between this and a Lexus…even though you can get the XC60 cheaper, in 2 or 3 years, when I’m ready to sell, the Lexus will get me more money back…
I’m kind of surprised I’m not seeing anyone here comment on the MPGe and that he breezed by it with no comment. My RAV4 Prime gets 94 MPGe and 38 combined gas according to the EPA. The 63 MPGe for this car is not great and the MPG seems pretty poor to me compared to other PHEV SUVs. I’m guessing this is probably the best for off road and it definitely has the most horsepower of any I’ve seen, so if that’s necessary or just desirable enough for the buyer then this makes sense. Right now I think most people have no visceral feeling for MPGe and when you charge at home you don’t see what you are paying. So compared to most MPG stats 63 sounds good. But compare it to other vehicle’s MPGe it seems pretty inefficient. The Hummer EV which is a stupid awesome vehicle gets 47 MPGe. To get good range they just put a bigger battery in there and since it’s an expensive niche vehicle they don’t really have to make it economical. My Prime has 300 hp which seemed kind of crazy to me when I first heard it. Now it just seems kind of normal compared to some of the AWD EV’s out there.
5:50: You noted this having been done by Volvo to help prevent battery damage in a crash, but one potential downside to having the tall battery wall between the two front seats is that -- in a side-impact crash, the passenger/driver might be squished between the door and the battery pack (whereas without a big "battery wall" there, there's more room for the passenger/driver to be pushed toward the opposite side of the car without being squished)... So I'm not so sure this is a plus; I think I'd rather have my battery pack underneath the passenger compartment, as most EVs have it...
I think Alex is comparing the Volvo battery location not to BEVs, but to other PHEVs. For example, the Audi q5 PHEV has the battery located under the luggage compartment floor. In a rear-end collision, there's a chance of expensive damage to the battery. Obviously, it would be ideal to have the battery below the passenger floor, but the XC60 is built on a ICE/PHEV platform, which cannot accommodate that.
Well, that will probably be a problem for my wife - she's allergic to wool (actually lanolin). If Volvo has removed all the lanolin in the wool, it will dry out , wear badly, and not have the summer/winter comfort.
@@alliejr 0-60 in 6 sec is fine. If it wasn’t priced at 55-60K. Plus no matter how you fancy about it, it doesn’t change that it’s just a dressed rav4 prime. The xc60 is just better in every way. No ifs ands or buts. It’s okay to try too hard in your own little world to say Lexus is better than Volvo only to realize that when you wake you to reality, you realize you’re wrong on every front. It’s time to give that up and accept that your Lexus advocacy just won’t cut it here. It happens. It’s part of life. Just accept it with grace poise and humility and get on board with the times Even I admit that while I love my Toyota with a passion, that they aren’t terribly competitive in general terms. This example here is no exception
Only pitty is that this one comes (at least for EU) from China, hence the good value for money. Don't want to make buying a car a political statement, but if I can I would try to avoid any MG's, Volvos build in China, Lync and Co,... In the end, it will be a lost battle I'm afraid, looking at the prices of BMW, Mercedes or Audi PHEVs, it's becoming sky high. As for the XC-60 really like the looks inside and out, but not a fan of losing buttons and having to going through the infotainment for almost everything. Nice review, lots of info!
This was a great review and more informative than usual. Thanks Alex! My only problem with the XC60? … it looks like a smaller XC90. Normally, that would be a compliment, but how old is the current XC90? Pretty long in the tooth as far as I’m concerned.

The new xc90 gives 40+ miles of range, so the lighter xc60 is already likely able to do 50+
I love this car. I have the XC40 recharge and I love it but man I love the XC60 plug in.
This checks all the boxes. Very nice.
Thanks. Could you please test their pilot assistance system? Best.
At 4:18 where is the under hood insulation? A vehicle in this class should have one. It reduces engine noise.
Can you also add audio analysis section to your review too...like rate it out of ten like you do the seats? Thank you!
Hi Alex, on the next review would you please talk more about the drive modes, pure, AWD, etc? Thank you!
To me this makes perfect sense! Everyone knows that electric vehicles limits are its strengths, battery power. An engine be it gas or diesel is a perfect match to an electric drive train as you get the best of both worlds.
Not the end game. Get rid of the ICE.
@@mark_r49 Give me 400 or more miles per charge then they can kill the ICE.
@@mark_r49 When public-charging stations are as ubiquitous and reliable as gas stations are today, then you'll see an "end game" of getting rid of ICEVs... Not until then...
Only downside is added complexity
@@panameradan6860 I agree, infrastructure is needed for the EV revolution. I also believe that a wireless charging pad for EVs should be a researched technology. This way multiple cars can charge on one pad at a charging station. But of course, this might be something that'll probably be 20 or 30 years into the future.
Great review. Thank you Alex for such a fantastic work. My favourite reviews on internet.
Great review, thanks, looking forward to my T8 which should be coming any week now 😀
Thanks Alex.
And manual steering wheel adjustment for this price
Side note: that mountain road you're on is the one used in the opening scene of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World". Route 74.
Give me the XC60 recharge any day over the dressed up RAV4. Well done Volvo color me impressed 😀
Or better yet save cash and get a Toyota and have my maintenance done at a Lexus dealership
Unfortunately for you most luxury cars are LEASED.
Not to mention the Volvo does literally everything better. Style to interior to tech to handling to ride to performance to comfort to luxury to value. This is even cheaper than the nx PHEV while being more spacious and way faster with the same ev range
The Acura RDX is honestly way more luxurious than the XC60
Im not even gonna bring the Genesis GV70, Lincoln Nautilus, BMW X5 or Audi Q5 into this conversation
@@joecool9739 X5 and nautilus doesn’t compete here. You mean x3 and Corsair
Elegant styling, I like it much more than the Lexus ! I want to test the front seat comfort and that new upholstery ....

How was the ride quality, Alex? With the air suspension did you feel riding on clouds? I have Sorento PHEV and still looking for an SUV with more sophisticated suspension system for better ride quality.
Very curious about this myself, no one really talks about ride quality which to me is the most important thing about a vehicle.
The xc60 has double wishbone fronts
I sell these. The xc60 with air ride feels fantastic, and I do recommend it. However, if you were looking at the xc90, I cannot feel a difference other than when the car raises or lowers itself. Hope this helps.
The V60 and XC60 recharge are my idea of an electrified car. Volvo has it rolling now and that cloth interior adds to what is the nicest interior of about anything at or above its price point or class. I’d love to go to Goteborg on the Overseas Purchase and get my break in miles in Europe before shipping it home. Great classy car and I currently own two MBs.
Do it soon before everything will start to be manufactured in South Carolina and china
We did Volvo's European Delivery in 2005 for a V50 T5...had a wonderful experience and hope to repeat it someday
I worry about the fabric seats pilling. I’m also miffed that the XC60 doesn’t have that smart cargo divider that the XC40, XC90, and even the Polestar have. What’s up with that? BTW, what did the chip shortage take away? Massage functionality? Ventilation on the leather?
When will you have the complete review for this?
Really appreciate your review on the 2022 Volvo XC60 Extended Range plug in hybrid, is their any chance you will get your hands on the T8 Polestar version. Most of the videos on the Polestar version are two years old and adolescent.
I absolutely LOVE this. But I normally buy vehicles to keep for 10 years or longer. I just hope it'll be reliable and durable. If Toyota made a Highlander with similar specs then I'd be all over that. However, an air suspension is so nice, it really gives a nice luxurious feel to a drive.

Pretty crazy times we are in, $72k for a smallish suv like this one. Nice car though.

I actually love the seats. But for the price I want and expect leatherette or leather. Its just easier to clean. They are very beautiful I will admit.
How does the Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring compare?
You should try out a Volvo with the Bowers & Wilkins system, it puts the Harmon Kardon system to shame.
haha... love that apt description of the XC90 as a "land barge" ... perfect, and I totally agree! I cringe when I see them on the road...

Absolutely I will option every speaker that Volvo has available for it.

How does it compare to the hybrid x5? I'm deciding btw them ... My main gripw xc60 is the firmer suspension tuning

The Google Maps do not appear bright and crisp; they should endeavor to make them look more like they look on my laptop or my iPhone...

does this recharges on gas engine while driving ?
Two years ago this was the official car of Newport, Rhoade Island! Well not this exact one as most were T5 or T6.
Great video - thanks
@@fbp452 Our RAV4 Prime and Porsche PHEVs both have the battery packs on the bottom toward the rear, so it can be done...

Is the industry still going to refer to mileage as mpg for these e-vehicles?
We need to know mpg for long road trips when a PHEV's traction battery charge is depleted...
How does this behave with the battery depleted?
The battery is never fully depleted. You will always have awd and full power
