“Our revenge will be the laughter of our children” - Vol. Bobby Sands MP - died 66 days on hunger strike. “My brother is not a terrorist” - Father Brian McCreesh, brother of hunger striker Raymond McCreesh. “It is not those who can inflict the most, but those who can suffer the most who will conquer”. - Terence MacSwiney Lord Mayor of Cork died 74 days on hunger strike. In loving memory of our ten young men who died during the 1981 hunger strike: Bobby Sands MP, Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, Patsy O’Hara, Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty TD, Thomas McElwee and Michael Devine. “He has chosen death, refusing to eat or drink that he may bring disgrace upon me. For there is a custom - an ancient custom - that if a man be wronged, or think that he is wronged, and starve upon another’s threshold till he die, the common people, for all time to come, will raise a heavy cry against the threshold, even though it be the king’s.” - William Butler Yeats. Ireland must have one of the most tragic of histories out of any country in the world. Over 800 years, nearly a millennium, at war with our closest neighbours. And still the troubles continue today in the north. Heroes like Padraic Pearse, Michael Collins, and Bobby Sands will always be remembered by the Irish along with so many others. Our national anthem really is a soldiers song.
+Coobadge The Noobadge Strange how every person I talk to about this had a relative that was killed by the IRA. The IRA killed roughly 1500 people, the vast majority of which were soldiers. Let's not forget that loyalists have also carried out terrorist attacks.
Marjan Podlogar He lived with Liam Cunningham to memorise 3,000 words of dialogue give or take for the priest scene. The long take took 17 minutes and 10 seconds.
And why were they fighting? They were fighting for the same reason that Nelson Mandela was fighting: equality. Irish republicans/Catholics were treated as second class citizens in Northern Ireland. They tried to protest but police would arrest and murder peaceful protesters. The PIRA was founded to protect them from the persecution they faced from the British and Loyalists. And what is your definition of soldier? Someone who shoots on unarmed teenagers?
im a true born canadian...but my grandpa was from scotland and grandma from ireland and they were meant for eachother and were the happiest ppl i ever met......god bless scotland and god bless ireland
Luc de la Porte actually what he said was the least arguable thing you could say about him. He did truly learn be his country and the people of his country, as shown when he gave up his life for them, and he was a great writer, nothing controversial about that part
Isaac McAuley No controversy in regards to his writing or political stance. The only thing that's divisive is that he was a member of the IRA and he was a man of the "cause". But I'm from an Anglo Saxon family so that's why I have this opinion
Film is stunning and intelligently balanced. It doesn't portray Bobby Sands as a Villain or a Hero. It just shows a very determined man who had made up his mind. That scene with the Priest, a republican too, where they strongly disagree about the methods of the IRA and talk about their background is astounding.
If you try to be unbias when referring to a subject like Northern Ireland, it will always seem biased anyway, as it is impossible to hide the brutality of the British and the R.U.C!
i couldnt watch this movie completely, have seen horror movies but couldnt muster the courage to watch this . the irish are very brave and defiant people . i can relate to their struggle because im from kashmir and we are also under the same occupation and circumstances they were. respect to bobby sands from kashmir and all the heroes who fight for independance
I ve been reading to Roll of Honour for ye Bobby.. over and over again.. and yet we are no united nation nor are we free .... but as you said.... Tiocfaidh ár lá !
This film is terrific and it avoids all political comment as well (Fassbender said this was key). The people on here praising it as a pro IRA film and bobby sands need to watch it again. Bobby sands was brave but ultimately a deal to stop the war was very close before his death, after his death he became a martyr and there was a huge spike in bombings and attacks. THe intensity of the war increased and ultimately although he didnt know it, far more people on both sides died as a result of it. This is coming from a left wing anti-thatcher person who dislike the english before I get accused of being tory right wing english.
I'm an American and don't really have a lot of knowledge about the relationship between Britain and Ireland except for the religious problems that I studied in history...could someone enlighten me? I'd like to learn more :)
With all due respect, I do believe that Bobby Sands died wearing a full Beard and Long hair, as opposed to the short haired, stubbled sands portrayed above, am I right, or am I mislead?
Kostas Sakkas, an imprisoned anarchist in Greece, is on hunger strike since the 4th of June 2013 fighting for his immediate release. Freedom for Kostas Sakkas.
Kelu Thatsall hey, just ignore those fuckers. I agree with you, and I saw the movie. The movie is about a period in ireland where there was a big group of people who wanted political freedom (as in being seperated from england) and those people where put in jail for political crimes. The movie shows the people in jail and their protests and how they are being treated there. It's also a bit about the guards there.
Lewis72 I don't know enough about the happening, but I know that there where riots (things like vandalism, breaking shop windows, writing political messages in graffiti etc.) for wich people where arrested, for protests etc.
@edwardbilli I am sorry to hear about your family, but please take into consideration the countless people on the other side as well. And not just during the troubles, but every regime and campaign that has been held in Ireland. Butchery. Meaningless violence. I hope britain and Ireland never see this again.
You might hate me for saying this but I liked "Some Mother's Son" much more than this film. Yes the production lvl of Hunger is higher etc. but I just can't get acostumed to this artificial deepness of the films of this generation. It's not that I love the obvious, but often such films are comparable to me with the blue painting in a galary which demands me to recognize its deepness and art. There are good films which manage a nice balance nowadays..like "Tyrannosaur", but not this one.
Truth hurts jennytoes hope you enjoyed it!- It's now history- parts of been played and lost on all sides. The hunger strike centred around "Five Demands": 1.he right not to wear a prison uniform; 2. the right not to do prison work; 3.the right of free association with other prisoners, and to organise educational and recreational pursuits; 4. the right to one visit, one letter and one parcel per week; 5.full restoration of remission lost through the protest
all of these Irish and English people alike in the comments need to realize this film isn't about the politics, it doesn't matter what side you're on. i'm personally against the IRA, i think freedom is a good thing to fight for but not in the way they did it. but not only is that completely irrelevant here, but it also does not mean i look down on this film, nor the person/ people it represents. this film is not about the IRA, nor what they or the British did, and whether or not it is right or wrong. this film is about the pain, and the suffering and the discrimination and disregard of rights towards these people, yet the determination and willpower they have to continue to fight for what they believe in. this film is relevant without the true story, without the politics, without the reminder that this all actually happens, it only makes the film even more devastating. and therefore, this film is a masterpiece.
Fair enough, I would have to disagree with you there as I believe that no side in the Troubles was worse than the other, as both were responsible for various atrocities. But that's just my opinion, each to his own I guess :)

hi
what happened in Ireland between 1923 to 1947 ? do you know books about this period ?
+katie boo It's a really depressing history. Used to hate that class at school.
Thanks for seeing it.....you are among the very few Katie

Amazing actor Fassbender, love him!!

Steve McQueen is a genius
One of the best movies I've ever seen in my entire life! It's a masterpiece indeed!
im a true born canadian...but my grandpa was from scotland and grandma from ireland and they were meant for eachother and were the happiest ppl i ever met......god bless scotland and god bless ireland
god was part of the reason that my countrys have suffered
McQueen's best film so far.
JUST LOVE STEVE MCQUEEN AND HIS WORK..
Terrific film, artistic and beautiful. Bobby Sands was a true patriot and a charming writer.
chrsitiethebarber That depends on your opinion. Since he was a Sinn Fein and IRA member he is quite divisive
Luc de la Porte actually what he said was the least arguable thing you could say about him. He did truly learn be his country and the people of his country, as shown when he gave up his life for them, and he was a great writer, nothing controversial about that part

+chrsitiethebarber he was quite a good artist with his excrement as well - some of those wall paintings were superb !
@@informationage559 fuck your opinion
Even the trailer is a work of art. So chilling and spine-tingling watching it. I really need to see the film now.
Really... I came here 'cause of Bobby Sands. Rest your soul Bobby, a true hero.

Great film especially considering it avoids taking any political stance - it just looks at the character and the situation.
Really shows the true courage of our freedom fighters, an amazing film
I ve been reading to Roll of Honour for ye Bobby.. over and over again.. and yet we are no united nation nor are we free .... but as you said.... Tiocfaidh ár lá !
Roll of Andrex comes to mind !!!
god bless you bobby sands !! remember the 10 !!
I thought the film was rather unbiased, which was one reason why I liked it so much
I mentioned "Some Mother's Son" (1996) since they're about the same thing. The Hunger Strike in Northern Ireland.
What a film. Fassbender's performance was brilliant as always.
Bobby Sands, you did an extraordinary thing for your country. Erin Go Bragh TAL
best trailer ever
This was easily the best trailers I have ever seen.
One of the most hard movie im ever see
Fassbender is stunning
Life changing
This movie is remarkable. If u haven't seen it go watch it now.
long live Ireland.

Sorry I kind of agree with your general comment except what on earth was this deal you talk about that I've never heard of
Hard to watch. Steve McQueen directing this beauty. It's a stunner but your feeling the Hunger.
This film is sublime.
no matter what side you take you cant argue that this wasnt a brillant movie & a piece of film gold!
He is such a great actor, I hope you enjoy his other movies as well! :)
R.I.P Bobby - TAL
Oh, and this movie is incredible.
Is this avaiable to purchase yet? I would love to see the film. Thanks for any information.
great movie..watched it twice now.. brave men.. and a story well told ..
this looks like an awesome movie. When's and where is it coming out?
I'm an American and don't really have a lot of knowledge about the relationship between Britain and Ireland except for the religious problems that I studied in history...could someone enlighten me? I'd like to learn more :)
The movie some mothers son touched me more. As a Irish I hope one our country will have true peace
I was living in the Republic of Ireland at that time. It became unwelcoming to be English then so we left. A very sad time.
With all due respect, I do believe that Bobby Sands died wearing a full Beard and Long hair, as opposed to the short haired, stubbled sands portrayed above, am I right, or am I mislead?
Well I can't find the song title, though I have found both artists... :( Do you think you could email me a link where I can find it?
What made this film so good was that it avoided taking sides politically - people on here seem to forget that.
Is that Thatcher's real voice?
+luccifer Merk yep
Yes. She was really an Iron Lady. DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD.
Does anyone know what the music in this trailer is?
how did you find this out from dianna argon
Kostas Sakkas, an imprisoned anarchist in Greece, is on hunger strike since the 4th of June 2013 fighting for his immediate release. Freedom for Kostas Sakkas.
I've asked to Shazam and apparently it's Sapporo Encores by Keith Jarrett from the album Sun Bear Concerts Piano Solo.
here because of YMS
yes peaceful means were attempted and was met with brutality
remember what happened on bloody sunday ??
Il a l'air super ! Après avoir vu un film pareil , à mon avis , on change.

REMEMBER THE 10
Anyone know what the music is in this?
Thank you.

Does anyone know the music?
How haunting is the piano.
Bobby was HERO.. just like Mansfeld Péter in 1956.....in Budapest.
God Save Their Souls now and forever!
One day united !
My favourite scene was when Bobby talks to the priest.
@Olli3RT Why are you calling Bobby Sands a muppet?
@notic99 WHO???
@notic99 what did she say bout it?? :O
@mgmtisyeah and it's the best pairing of a director and actor ever!
Fasssyyyyy
Truer words could not be said.
Iæve heard about this. He died while hunger striking.
Hard movie
looks great
good nice movie...
@notic99 how xD
Christian bale was definitely thinner, his body was perfect in the machinist, Michael doesn't look too thin here but is pretty thin nonetheless
and because it's a steve mcqueen film :)
This looks like a good film. I plan on watching it. Also because shirtless michael fassbender.... ._.

"those people where put in jail for political crimes"
- How was bombing the Balmoral Furniture Company and carrying firearms a political crime?

If you trust it, a lot of it (all?) is on Wiki.
Lewis72 What kind of articles do I look for?
EvitalovesThings
Well, I started with the title of this film, on Wikipedia.
It references its influences.

even the trailer's well done
The movie is about the hunger strike, these things happened.
@alex1234567908
I'm not so sure about that, I've seen both films and they were both incredibly skinny, hard to say who was thinner.
@SmileysAllRound
Touche. Thanks for saving form said Persons Spoiler.
Damn, I wanna c this.

I see one of my comments received too many negative votes. Result!!!!!
Michael
haha, was about to type the same question then i saw your comment ^^
I hope Steve MQueen is ok after falling off his motorbike and getting caught in barbed wire.
@pem82sox
Well, there's the Gaelic language, mythology/Cú Chulainn, and Irish history slavery/wars....that creates culture.
And all thanks to Margaret Thatcher may she rot in hell!
