In this video I react to Cavalettas from The Bedlam in Goliath by The Mars Volta.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Underrated song. It's a lurching monster of a track.

Cavalettas is one of the weirder songs from TMV I'd say, but still pretty cool. My favorite parts are the 21/8 parts where he sings "don't hide that guilty smile, condolences won't go away". The next song though, Agadez, is awesome :)

    • @DavidWilliams-ic1nn
      @DavidWilliams-ic1nn 3 роки тому

21/8, interesting. granted i am long out from my music theory days but that section can also be counted in alternating 6/4 and 5/4 measures. that may be easier to compose and dictate for maybe. the part where Dean posts signature this song is in is (and he knows) 4/4 but i know he was referring to these other sections. the 4/4 sections are HEAVILY syncopated
edit....5/4 starts before 6/4 @ 1:44 (but prove me wrong because I am 18 years out from AP high school music theory lol)
oh man more edited... Jackson I realized your are referring to that middeling at the end, ignore my previous comments, i can count 21/8 on that part but it makes my brain hurt...but Dean, how does alternating 5/4, 6/4 sound otherwise?!

@@DavidWilliams-ic1nn Counting the alternating 5/4 and 6/4 made MY brain hurt haha. I think the main reason is because on the last beat of the 6/4 parts, the bass hits an extra note or two, so it throws you off and makes you think the 5/4 part starts one beat before it does. Never realized how complicated this song was. They also did an alternating 5/4 and 6/4 in Day of the Baphomets. It's much easier to count there :P

this was the song that hooked me on to mars volta, along with l'via. all of production choices and instrumentals are so insane and still blow me away. flute solo and chipmunk effect cedric? too great

The last two to three minutes of this song *are* Bedlam In Goliath to me. Old elements being reintroduced to be distorted and malformed into something that just hammers at you. In its own story, this is a cursed album holding an evil spirit and in those moments we hear something trying to break through and reach out to grab us through our speakers

Say it once again... Thomas Pridgens drumming changed the sound of this band in such an INSANE way! John Theodore was amazing and Cedric even said in an interview that it was a mistake letting him go, but he was there to put out some amazing albums as well! Omar has such an eye for talent!
Fun fact, Thomas Pridgen won a drum competition at a guitar center I believe at only 8 or 9 years old! Plus, he was playing against adults!!! He was sponsored by Zildjian shortly after.

Broadly speaking I really like these guys. They can get into some areas of experimentation that take me out of the song as a listener, but I applaud their adventurous spirit. I'll always come back for more in spite of those moments.

Dean, have you read about the back story of this album and its writing? involves an old Ouija board and lots of odd happenings in the studio. pretty creepy.

I'll keep nagging you about Pain of Salvation. ;)
    Do "Beyond the Pale" please.
...and maybe give Agent Fresco a listen if you haven't already (?). They've toured with Leprous and are both quite similar and different at the same time. I'd start with "Dark Water", but the whole album "Destrier" is great! One of my ultimate favorites from the album is "Death Rattle" (though maybe the least 'prog' song on the album). Listen to the lyrics and pay attention to the "heartbeat" from the drums. I get goosebumps and something wet in my eyes every time I really listen to this song...

not a biggest fan of this track. cedric's melodies sound repetitive and uninspired. this LP is all over the place. I always had a feeling it's too long and that some songs are pushed to hard to work :/
edit: some parts of this songs remind me of El grupo nuevo de ORL his Crypto album. Check it out Dean

To be fair this album is all over the place. It would be impossible to make an album that didn't sound all over the place considering all the shit that happened. This could have been their best album if that guy didn't steal the tapes and the studio didn't flood.

    • @deanwolfechannel

@@deanwolfechannel plus, the drummer of the mats volta in the first three albums got fired. This drummer on this album is just as sick (maybe technically better infact), but he wasn't the right fit imo.
