Flea added such a big beautiful bass sound to this album. Especially during the more freeform moments, he gives them some backbone helping us to stay engaged as listeners. When those tight riffs come in though he's there giving everything some extra balls. Wish they did more with him. Love Mars Volta, got to meet a few of them after an awesome show in Auckland once outside a bar in the CBD. Crazy fucking night.
Sharky! The Mars Volta (At The Drive In / Antemasque) are crazy talented. It's like hearing someone talk, whose brain thinks clearly faster than the mouth can speak. But in music. Love it. Stay safe.

I first heard of the Mars Volta after months of getting into tool and rinsing thee back catalogue. I was lucky enough to see Mars Volta open up for A Perfect Circle back in the day. So it was APC during Thirteenth Step and Mars Volta during Deloused. They played for an hour, did about 3 songs. It was awesome.

Interesting you noted a punk sound in there. Not sure if someone else has mentioned but the Mars Volta’s lead vocalist and guitarist used to have a post-hardcore/punk band called At the Drive-In
The interesting thing is that this band had its roots in 'At the Drive-In' which was basically an alt-rock/with hardcore punk influences band, and then they came out with this 'experimental' trip of an album, at a time when prog certainly wasn't on the agenda of cool kids.
Fun fact #1 : This album was produced by Rick Rubin Fun fact #2 : Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers played the bass on all the songs for this album ❤️
Used to play TMV on guitar and they were up there as one of my favourite bands. Got diagnosed with MS and could no longer play guitar due to an altered sensation in my left arm and hand, so put my focus into bass instead. Turns out I can still play that because it doesn't feel like tiny knives cutting into my fingers like guitar strings do. Anyways, I think after relistening and relearning the songs on bass, I think they may be slightly higher up on my list of favourite bands. Fantastic bass on every album (not just the one that Flea recorded on). Anyways, random recommendation. Thank You Scientist - Suspicious Waveforms and as you're a long time prog listener... If you haven't already, anything by MAGMA.
That "King Crimson" bit, imo, represents their friend waking up from his coma. It's that sort of dreamy, not quite right sound... Then he hears the doctor say "Knife me in. Hobbling. Talking in it's sleep again." and fades back out into that trippy guitar solo. Then he hears the doctor again, has one last set of hallucinations, and finally snaps awake. He asks, "Who brought me here?" The whole album is a masterpiece, and an extremely personal work. But the final 5 minutes are some of the best work they've done.
