- Last spring we visited the National Trust property of Cragside while staying a few days in Northumberland. This Victorian house was built into the side of a steep valley above Rothbury. Home to Lord and Lady Armstrong it was developed into one of the most innovative homes of the age. The fast flowing Coquet River was used to generate hydro-electricity for the house. This was the first house powered by hydro-electricity in the world. Armstrong was an engineering genius whose inventions in the field of hydraulics helped make his fortune. The hydraulic machinery that operates Tower Bridge, in London, is just one of many achievements. His Arts & Crafts influenced home was fitted with all the comforts of the time, including central heating. He filled his home with art and welcomed foreign dignitaries and Royalty. Around the house the grounds were landscaped and lakes added. Across the river gorge a garden overlooks the Northumbrian countryside. On this visit a walk around parts of the garden is followed by a brief walk through the house.

The owner was way ahead of his time using electricity ...and his gardens are superb..
The Trust has built an "Archimedes Screw" that creates hydro electricity for the house today. Armstrong championed the latest home improvements. Did you notice the "dishwasher" in the kitchen? Great place to visit.

Just beautiful! The lush and colorful gardens make the most of the steep slopes and gorges. The house is so tasteful and elegant, but maintains the Scottish authenticity. Thank you for sharing this excellent footage. Your choice of music was perfect!

The house was cutting edge in its day. The landscape hereabouts is forested with areas of open moorland. The House is located in a beautiful and relatively remote area. Thanks for watching.

The place is giving a fairy place because there are lots of flowers and very green. The castle or the big house is giving a vintage vibe and style. The way you film everything is indeed great and concise becise you tour us around virtually. The things inside that place seems like they're so expensive and great. The dining area were so clean and fascinating. The kitchen area is a dream and the rooms as well. Overall, it was fantastic and amazing tour my friend and Have a nice day friend!

Thank you Simon. It was a wet but really enjoyable day. We do not usually head into the house as there are lots of walks to enjoy here but the wet stuff was a bit of a deterrent.

Thank you Jennifer. The landscape here doesn`t need a lot of help but the Armstrongs certainly made the most of the location. Elsewhere there are lakes both in the valley and on the moorlands. The lake a short way up the valley made sure there was sufficient water to drive the production of electricity. That fireplace is quite enormous and is actually set back into the hillside. Glad you enjoyed watching.

What a beautiful Victorian age property. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with so many lovely flowers and plants. Inside Cragside House was equally as lovely with the decorations and all of the wonderful pieces of artwork. I thought the kitchen with the old stove was really interesting as well. 😊👍

I had a house which I sold in the UK, and when I see videos from the UK I get all nostalgic. I hope that I won't regret for selling the house and moving back to Italy. This video it's so beautiful I almost have tears. And the music perfect, with the singing of the birds! Beautiful pink flowers! I adore spring time! The indoors were amazing and the music you chose exquisite! You truly did a remarkable job! Loved the table with the breakfast ready! The bedroom also looks so cosy, I will miss UK I know that! But I will continue seeing it through your delightful videos! I will be back!
Italy is such a beautiful country that I find it difficult to imagine that you could have any regrets. We have visited much of your country and love returning often. Earlier this year we visited Sicily for the first time and had a really amazing time. There are still so many places for us to discover. Thanks for watching. Hi Serge. Thanks for your comments. The National Trust does a great job preserving and interpreting these places. There are about 5 million members currently and the annual membership gives us entry to so much of our history, access to protected landscapes and entry to many great gardens. Ah guys great history at this world famous place and even in wet weather the gardens were lovely and so colourful. The inside of the house was gorgeous especially the stained glass windows and the house was definitely filled with art ! So beautiful and you took lovely footage 🙂👍~ Anna
