Tillis' jab and movement are top notch.
That’s what Douglas used as his blueprint to beat him. Plus a unmotivated drug and sex crazed Tyson and hyper motivated boxer like buster was a disaster ready to happen. I think buster woulda won had it gone the 12 also but he did get a slow count in round 8 so Tyson could or should have gotten the win. So many what if’s. Regardless it was probably a blessing because he would have eventually lost to another great like foreman or Lennox or holycheat or bowe. At least with Douglas he can say it was a lucky fight and was unprepared and took it lightly. If he would have lost to another great like the above mentioned it would have tarnished his reputation and legacy far worse than buster did. Regardless still a great HW champ. Imagine being 5’10 and go fight 6’ plus monster like 6’3” 6’5” guys. Takes balls for sure and great skill and power and fearlessness even though he admitted being scared in all his fights but never threatened. Fear is a great motivating factor in all aspects of life especially physical sports or competition
Remind me of muhammad ali
Best he fought up to that point, albeit Tyson was out of shape from infection and hospital visit. Tillis took a heck of a beating but dished up some beauties of his own.
@@SpontaneousSubstance. typical Tyson fantard comment. The guy was a very good boxer but had shortcomings in his fighting style he couldn’t overcome. It wasn’t Tyson partying that made him lose it was Manipuri to adjust during a fight. If he couldn’t knock you out quickly with peekaboo or using the same combinations over and over and have succes he didn’t know what to do. All the guys that beat him outthought him
Tillis is a bit like an older, poor man’s version of Ali.
Tillis was very effective, just lacked the power to knock Mike out. His scoring and straight hitting was impressive, he was very skilled.
This fight and Razor Ruddock fights proved Tyson had heart when he was actually focused. Shame we didn't get to see much of this mindset from him during his career past the Spinks bout.
this bout was a DRAW//Tyson razor 2 /Tyson hit razor with countless low blows.. Tyson was the most explosive heavyweight in the history of boxing 💯

I never heard of Tillis before, the man boxed Tyson very well. He was very composed, he has granite chin with raw power, I really enjoyed the way he took Tyson the distance. I wish to know more about this Tillis
@Comrade Stalin Tyson was at his absolute peak in 1988.
You liked Quick Tillis. So I recommend you see Tony Tucker.
And also watch Tyson vs rezor ruddock 2
Tillis only lost by one point. If it wasn't for the knockdown it would've been a draw
@@DonDon45-i5hrubbish, watch the full fight Mike beat him properly.
I can't understand how the crowd booed Mike & Tilis they fought their hearts out... hats off for both fighters, damn that was a great fight.
They wanted to see Tyson knock Tillis out, I believe Tyson came in to this fight with 19 straight wins all by knockout, so that's what they expected to happen but it didn't
Remember this fight he was a close fight the judge scored 6-to-4
Yes....
I think they booed the final verdict.
If it wasn't for the knockdown this fight could have been scored a draw
Tillis still bouncing on his toes at the end of the fight... He was in tremendous shape for this fight which was probably how he managed to take so many shots... Big strong legs
And most importantly, he was not intimidated by Tyson like most were in th 80s.

Tillis was in excellent condition and trained hard for this fight, that's why he lasted with Mike and didn't give him a stationary target to land a flush punch. Mike took a lot of shot but because Tillis was moving so much he couldn't hit mike with any strength either but it was a good lesson for Mike to know that a guy can train just as hard as you.

Mike was good too. Not just his usual swarming style.
After watching this fight, how could anyone think that Tyson would beat Ali or even A prime Larry Holmes. Tillis is an Ali type clone with much lesser skills.
@@cvance37 Maybe but I think prime Tyson would have made it interesting.
@@cvance37 Its a 50/50 fight, joe frazier beat ali annd almost beat him in the 3 fight, and frazier is the smaller, slower, wakest, less punching power and worst head movement. So but that point of view, tyson would demolish Ali. But james tills gave tyson a tought fight being a worst version of Ali. Looking well, both of them can win each other , the question would be out of 10 times, who would win more times?. I honesly believe that tyson would be beneficial out of this. Tyson can loose via a really close decision but Ali would loose worst if tyson win getting seriosly hurt or a clearer decision .
Josh foreman Mike Tyson fades in later rounds. Frazier does not. Tyson hits harder than Frazier, but Ali had an iron chin. Tyson would need to knock out Ali in the first 5 rounds to beat Ali. Considering an old Larry Holmes went 4 rounds vs all that Tyson Power, I think it’s safe to say a prime Ali survives the Tyson onslaught and beats Tyson by decision or late 11th round stoppage. Same for a prime Larry Holmes. Side note Holyfield said Forman punches harder than Mike Tyson. Forman could not knock out Ali.
It was absolutely unforgettable fight and I just wanna say : Congratulation to the two of fighters ( Tyson n' Tillis). You had showed a memorable n' tight fight. One of the factor, He was not easily Beaten by Tyson, he could put out Tyson ferocious blows. But so far It was amazing n' I was entertained by the fight. (Tyson Fan )

Some of the most average fighter looked thier best against Mike because they knew and trained to go against the best in history. Alot of these guys only claim to fame was facing Mike, and they realized to get in ring with Mike you just cemented your name in history books. Tyson carried that division and made qlot of men alot of money.
That is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen. These Tyson glazers are out of control. Quick Tillis fought damn near everyone in the heavyweight division. Holyfield, Tyson, Frank Bruno, Tommy Morrison, Tim Witherspoon, Pinklon Thomas, Greg Page, Mike Weaver, and Gerrie Coetzee...all world champions. Some of you really shouldn't post on shit you don't know anything about.

Earnie Shavers
A trial by fire for Tyson here. I had it 8-2 or 7-3 for Tyson, who dominated, but because Tillis stood his ground a lot of people had it closer. Tillis was a solid gatekeeper type and fought one of his best fights ever. This also showed, among other fights, that just because his opponent survives 5 rounds doesn't mean Tyson folds and packs it in. They fight in 1988 and Tyson knocks him out.
What a great fight, thanks for the posting.
Tilis gave "Prime" Tyson the closest comparison he would ever get to a fight with Ali. This was by far a better fight than Tyson Lennox Lewis later because that version of Tyson only had 1 spectacular round in the 1st then everything else was hug and hit. This is a great fight to see full on techniques of both styles. Tilis was tough. Damn good fight.

Tillis fought a great fight.
I like watching these older fights again because I pick up things missed watching live. Tyson was shorter than most if not all fighters he faced. I feel that was a disadvantage that he overcame well. Tyson was susceptible to uppercuts and many of his opponents didn't utilized it enough. However some did use uppercuts and were successful. Tillis didn't throw many in this fight. He traded well and used a good jab and some fast combinations. Mike was usually coming forward and would pummel with great body shots. It's funny to hear commentary about Mike Tyson not knocking out an opponent. Eventually there would be someone to take him the distance and that was good for Tyson.
Intelligent comments dude. On point all the way!
I dont think his hight was a disadvantage, if u see the style power of punches and speed in both hands, the famous uppercut in which he turns the power of his body so easily, this is the advantage of his hight and not to mention the beautiful head and body movement which provides him unpredictable angles to surprise his apponents, if u emagine tyson taller than that i think he would have been a good fighter but not the kid dynamite, this tyson is the complete package, d amatu knew how to build him

For all those who said that Tyson it’s not a durable boxer...! And only power without cardio and no boxer skills! Well I have to say, that after he retired, most of fighters and box experts, realized that Tyson was a exception on this Planet... his speed and head movement, was never seen at heavyweight, including our days...!

TEENAGE MIKE TYSON , 7 week Layoff from training because he fell off his Pigeon coop & was in the Hospital, still learning & developing because he wasnt at his full prime yet, i would say this was a great learning experience for TYSON, & it definitely made him a better fighter after,
Especially when he got bigger, stronger & better in late 87 & 88 & destroyed TYRELL BIGGS, PINKLON THOMAS, TONY TUBBS, LARRY HOLMES, CARL WILLIAMS, FRANK BRUNO & MICHAEL SPINKS,
the TYSON who developed & destroyed those men was a whole DIFFERENT ANIMAL than the Younger pre prime less experienced TYSON who fought JAMES TILLIS
Mike is confused of a moving Tillis, and some say he would have defeated a prime Ali. Remember, his hands cannot hit what his eyes cannot see. Ali would have jabbed, moved, and grabbed all night while dancing on his feet.

My exact thoughts too bro. Although Tillis emulated the same evasive dancing style that bewlidered Tyson, Ali's punches would have been snappier and stung a lot more. I definitely think that a young Ali would have demolished a young Tyson

Both of these boxers looked waaay better than prime Wilder, Andy Ruiz Jr., or Pulev
Shit Willis would probably beat any heavyweight today besides maybe Fury because of that size.
This was raw boxing talents not this man made boxers like Fury n them.
Or Fury

Tillis gave Mike a hell of a fight in this one. He hit mike more than Razor Ruddock, or anyone else that I have seen. And this was at a time when Mike was a monster. Tillis I think, showed he was made from the same steel Mike was. Wow.
Tillis held his own.
Tillis was not impressed by tyson's power. But he was by earnie Sheavers : "he hit me so hard that he turn milk to gazoline"
Tillis in there looking like Lawrence Taylor.
I agree.
never seen him fight before but thought he looked familiar. makes sense now 😎
I thought kinda like Ali’
Tillis fought one hell of a fight, this is one of the few Tyson matches where people got their monies worth.
Yes he did fight a good fight
Tillis was using his reach wisely on this one.
Tillis could have been the one we all are talking about had he had better trainers. He had all the tools...
This fight shows how Ali would’ve easily beat a prime Tyson, I’m a Tyson fan and used to say Tyson would’ve beat Ali, but he had trouble with good boxers and Tillis shows what a fast and hard as hell to hit Ali would’ve done.
And Ali in his early prime was unhittable! You saw the faces of Ali's early opponents! Always swollen eyes, busted lips, and nots, all over their heads. Joe Frazier face in all their fights. Mike Tyson, would not have endured the constant head shots that Ali would have been putting on him. Look what Lennox Lewis did to him!
Agree
@@merloncox4408 plus, when he was hit (All his Joe Frazier fight) Ali had an iron jaw and could take body shots like nobody else!!!
thats all said whne ali fought Fraizer
Not a lot of world class talent out there in the mid 80s for Tyson to fight so it made Tyson look better !
Tillis is from my home town Tulsa. He was cool wit my grandmother. Me and my brother use to spar with him at the YMCA where he used to train. Good ole fashion country boy with a heart of gold and a adamantium chin!!
I know tillis record was not the best, But the Fact that he was the first man to go the distance with PRIME iron mike, and the fact he won over shavers, makes him an alltime great in my book and could definitely give any boxer a tough time.
Tillis set the blue print for Holyfield and Lennox... Damn good fight,,
Not them, Douglas. Exact same recipe only Douglas had better execution and Tyson way less footwork and head movement.
And Douglas was 5 times better then Tillis.and thats enough to beat Tyson whatever exuses the fanboys tries to find.
@Chuck Anya I thought it was 16 prostitutes
Set the blue print for Buster Douglas, the first to knock out Tyson
Holyfield beat him very differently. He stayed inside and knew how to slip and roll and return fire something Tyson was not used to. Holyfield used his physical strength to make Tyson move backwards negating his power and sending the message as to who was boss. I loved seeing the bully bullied.
This is why Tyson could not have beaten a young Larry Holmes
and also Ali
By watching this fight...Ali would've knocked Mike Tyson smooth out by talent alone.
Interesting. I c what your saying. Ive always been of the mind tyson would rock ali.. but this dude box like a poor Ali. So, maybe eh
I saw this long time ago several times and i never understand how anyone can give Tyson any sort of chance against Ali.Ali would have beaten him so badly so Tyson would have bit him in the foot or something to get out of it.
@Matt Prince
Why?
@Matt Prince
Speed?
You are going to try and find a weakness in Ali, and you pick Speed?
Have you seen this fight?
Tillis trained under Angelo Dundee and fought similar to Ali.
And he troubled Tyson.
Ferocity?
You mean agressivness, walking foreward.
Thats their style.
And Ali could be an extremly brutal fighter if he wanted to be.
Skill?
No.
Simply No.
Ali is about as masterful of a Boxer as they come.
Tyson is a masterful Agressor, whilst Ali is a masterful defender.
Ali didnt care in which direction he fought, Tyson could only ever press in.
@Matt Prince
Dont know if you ever heard of a guy called Floyd Patterson.
The first guy to learn Peek-a-boo from Cus D'armato?
Ali beat him twice.
You have to be one of the best fighters of all time to last this long against Tyson.
You must not have seen his fight against Tony Tucker then.
Nah, anyone who wasn't a bum or nearly retired unveiled how overrated Tyson was
Quick indeed tillis. The man was awsome this fight
True but Tyson was still developing. I saw their 4 rounds exhibition in 1987 at November and their sparring sessions for Biggs fights and Tyson completely dominated Tillis, that in 1986 he was in great shape but I throwed fast punches and running in the Ring, not really hit with bad intentions.
That when boxing was amazing.
yes it was....am thinking the heavyweight golden glover winners of that time....could beat most heavyweights of today......
Now it got ruined by phonies and showoffs like mayweather. Boxing is dead now
