Tony Tucker was a very underrated fighter who for some reason could never land big fights except on two occasions. He had this competitive fight with Tyson at his absolute best. He lost to Lennox Lewis in 1993 but that's when he was a little past it and he still gave Lewis a pretty good fight Even George Foreman wanted nothing to do with him, which I suspect was because Foreman simply wasn't interested in a tough fight after beating Moorer. Though at that point in his career Tucker was no more dangerous than Shannon Briggs who Foreman fought a couple of years later so its rather curious. But with a little better management and promotion Tucker had the potential to be an ATG.
I always wondered why everyone was so hype about Tyrell Biggs even after this fight, Tucker was waaaaaaay better boxer than Biggs but a lot of people was giving more credit to Biggs. I remember Biggs saying about Tyson "He never fought anyone like me" Tucker managed to give Tyson a good fight, he was a fair opponent to prime Mike

I don’t think he hit any of his bread and butter combos bang on the whole time. Tony Tucker had a phenomenal chin and his footwork really helped him evade early on. By the end you could see he was gassed and resorted to clenching as much as possible. Tucker fought a super smart fight and had the skills to back it up.

WOW! I actually watched this fight live in Vegas with some friends on Aug 1st, 1987, the day before my 19th birthday. During the match Michael Spinks and his entourage walked right past us and sat just a few rows above where we were sitting. Between rounds the crowd would turn to where Spinks was sitting and taunt him into challenging Tyson for a title bout. Almost a year later that matched happened. Ironically, James Buster Douglass was on the under card for the Spinks match, and nearly 2-years later "Tokyo" Douglas would accomplish the biggest surprise upset in sports history. Great times to be a young guy and following the fight game. PS- And nooo...... I didn't wake-up the next morning with a Tiger in my hotel bathroom. That happened during my Vegas bachelor party years later.
Tony Tucker's movements were reminiscent of Muhammad Ali. Tucker countered strategically by dodging Tyson's powerful punches and leaning against the ropes. He was always careful to keep a proper distance from Tyson. Great Fight🔥🔥🔥
You're absolutely right. I've always said this was the closest thing to a Ali vs Tyson fight that we all witnessed in our dreams. And knowing Ali was a class above Tucker, that's why I think Ali would have been my favourite for the win.
Tucker fought Tyson with a broken hand most of the fight. Makes this performance even more remarkable as he was giving Tyson fits. Classic underrated fight here

Tucker was somewhat competitive but spent a lot of the fight holding Tyson. He did what he had to do to survive the 12 rounds. He did not use his right hand enough as he had hurt it while training for this fight. Like I said before, this video was edited very well but is not representative of how good the fight actually was. As far as Wilder is concerned, I have seen his fights with Fury and that's about it. Don't really follow boxing today. @Dillon Mcconnell ifs buts and maybes. Mike was a flawed boxer, his inability to survive alone without his brain(cus) means he's not great at all, he was half a boxer and never did anything great beyond being the youngest champ, he's a myth, nothing more. Oh and I was there.
@Dillon Mcconnell Of course it's my opinion, what else would it be? So is yours🤔 I don't find it surprising, if it did happen, that Ali would advise an old Forman not to take on a hard hitter, why would you think that is some kind of argument for Tyson being great? I agree with Forman that you only get the greatest ego and mouth of the century once on a lifetime, I don't agree you get a Tyson once in a lifetime, Tua is more or less a Tyson, so was Liston. I also agree with Forman that Lennox Lewis is the greatest boxer of all times, without a doubt. That guy has the stats to back up his claims.

Yeah, he also TKO'd Buster Douglas who we saw was a talented heavyweight when he actually put the work in and he showed up to the Tucker fight in the same condition as he fought Tyson in Actual prime Tyson probably met his match mostly in Tucker, a heavyweight that took his power and even won 4 rounds against him, Razor Ruddock gave Tyson some trouble but Tyson dropped him numerous times

And how in the hell did you give that fight to Tillis? 😂 Man I’m not even gonna waste anymore of my time with you. Clown.
Mike Tyson is a true technician!! Completely changed his fighting style mid fight!! When he saw this dude wasn't falling. He just started tagging him with that jab.
In this match you always see the ability of Iron Mike to continue fighting to the end. Tucker ran and tied all the time bringing some shots but fighting less than Tillis. The high height and high experience saved him from the carpet. the only thing Tyson in this match was more "listless" than usual but still explosive and I think it was because he had not reached the maximum physical form. It is written in his book True. Iron Mike is still too superior and if they fought again I'm sure he would have knocked him out without problems. Obviously, any KO artist, however, always finds someone who manages to go all the way, whether by tactics or by heart.
I don't think it's a matter of maximum physical form, mike Tyson hasn't grown since he was 13 years old. I don't think he would've knocked out Tucker that easy either. Tucker was a solid contender who used to do a thousand push ups a day. Mike felt confortable holding on Tucker probably because he was getting a free ride to a UD and Tucker complied.
True. I think in terms of physical strength, Tyson was at his peak in 2 fights against Ruddock. Again, Im talking about physical condition, not technique. In both fights against Ruddock, Mike took tons of big punches and keep firing back even more. Even though it was his 40th fight, Tyson actually was only 25 at the time.
By this time Tyson wasn’t seeming as dominant as he was in his previous years of professional boxing. You can see how boxers weren’t afraid of him and were giving him a tough fight. Also you can see Tyson’s slight frustration with struggling to beat these guys in the fights, plus how many times they would catch him with great shots and rock him a bit.
By this time? This is dead smack in the middle of Tyson’s peak! As you can hear the announcers being surprised it went the distance. They should not have been. Tucker was 34-0 with 30 ko’s including one over Buster Douglas right before this fight.
This is prime Tyson. Escaping 1 fall in 12 round is great achievement. Tyson, as usual, is charging. Tyson could not land body shot before going for hook & uppercut combination as Tony Tucker is moving well within ring. Tucker really fought well
From what I remember in a post fight interview with Tucker. Tucker claimed he hurt his hand really bad about halfway through the fight... in the punch that knocked Tyson backwards... Tucker also claimed because of that injury, he was unable to release the full magnitude of his right ... the rest of the fight.

This was Mike's best win in his prime. Before this, Tucker hadn't lost a fight since his amateur days nine years prior. He trained for years in the Kronk gym in Detroit and I remember reading a Sport Illustrated article where Emmanuel Steward rated about his athleticism and natural instincts. After this fight, Ticker apparently went into a depression amd had problems with drugs. Too bad because he was a real talent.

This was the hardest fight Tyson had in his prime. Tucker was no joke, and obviously frustrated Tyson. Was the first time I questioned Tysons dominance. This was a great fight, and one that doesn't get the credit it deserves.
With all due respect to Tyson's skill and power... Tucker and Tillis were tough enough to go the distance with a prime Mike and showed when you put a well trained heavyweight with skills and heart in front of him Tyson is no longer quite the killing machine he was against scared fighters like Spinks. I feel half of Tysons success in the ring were the mediocre competition he faced throughout his career. This is Tyson at his absolute peak with Rooney in his corner and yet he never came close to knocking Tucker out. Unlike most of Mike's opponents of this era, Tony was an experienced fighter with skills and toughness and not a pushover.

Wow, Tucker lasted the whole 12 rounds without getting dropped by Mike once. Even Buster tasted the canvas against young Tyson. What's more, is Tucker even went the distance with prime Lennox Lewis in 93. As far as Mike, this matchup went to further prove that bigger, taller, UNAFRAID guys who could LEGIT box, typically gave even prime Mike the most issues.
For the folks on here saying Tucker was just trying to survive: 1) I'm not sure what fight you were watching. 2) You dont know very much about boxing. Tucker had injured his right hand in Training (the announcers actually allude to this fact during the fight.) It is very clear that he reinjures that hand in round 4. Tony was landing that punch over and over until then. Post round 4, he stopped throwing the right. Sadly, devastated by the belief that an injured hand had kept him from glory Tony Tucker fell into drug addiction for years after this fight. What was really important about this fight that many of you are missing is Tucker laid down the blue print for how Iron Mike would be defeated. Indeed it was the very same punch - the right uppercut, that was Tyson's undoing in Tokyo.
The way Tucker moved reminded me of Muhammad Ali's movement skills. Only Tucker failed to sting like a bee. If Tucker could do that, this fight would certainly have ended differently.
Tony Tucker was a great boxer. First class athlete. Mike went in like a bison with little beauty in his fight. Landed more punches. They were both good.
I watched this fight back in 87. Tucker was a formidable opponent. The style reminded me of Lennox Lewis. He could have been like Lennox Lewis with better promotion and bigger fights. Kevin Rooney was tailor made for tyson.. Had he been there when tyson fought douglas and holyfield, the result would have been opposite for sure.. Don king trainers ruined tyson skills and eventually finished his career prematurely
Tatarawr A focused Tyson is a problem for everybody. Holyfield was a blown up light heavyweight in 1991 and was even smaller in the 80s. Douglas was motivated and fought a crazy good fight but there were many spots where Tyson would’ve been effective in but because of his careless training camp and festivities he was physically unable to seize the moments. He kept trying to end the fight with one big shot against a man powered by the will of his deceased mother. Channeled an entire career’s worth of determination into one fight against an unmotivated Tyson.
@@KingJachai Holyfield's entire game plan was to force Tyson backwards while fighting him and when Tyson was at his best and Holyfield was light, he couldn't have done that. In my opinion, Tyson would have dealt him a serious beating pre prison. @19Lion8 He went the distance with Lewis as well. He wasn't anywhere close to being a bum.

Guess everyone ducked him?
I always wondered why everyone was so hype about Tyrell Biggs even after this fight, Tucker was waaaaaaay better boxer than Biggs but a lot of people was giving more credit to Biggs. I remember Biggs saying about Tyson "He never fought anyone like me" Tucker managed to give Tyson a good fight, he was a fair opponent to prime Mike

Even when he was under mental ilness and untrained, he schooled him. In their rematch, he DESTROYED Wilder. He was literally took to the hospital. Tony tucker had 5 inches on Mike and 10+ inch reach advantage. Mike had to get in super close in the early rounds to connect.

@Dillon Mcconnell Of course it's my opinion, what else would it be? So is yours🤔
I don't find it surprising, if it did happen, that Ali would advise an old Forman not to take on a hard hitter, why would you think that is some kind of argument for Tyson being great?
I agree with Forman that you only get the greatest ego and mouth of the century once on a lifetime, I don't agree you get a Tyson once in a lifetime, Tua is more or less a Tyson, so was Liston. Yeah, 71 inches reach, 6 inches shorter than Tucker and still outjabbed him
In this match you always see the ability of Iron Mike to continue fighting to the end.
I
I don't think it's a matter of maximum physical form, mike Tyson hasn't grown since he was 13 years old.
I would say Tyson was most dominant in 88, before he fired Rooney.
Your an pansy
By this time? This is dead smack in the middle of Tyson’s peak! As you can hear the announcers being surprised it went the distance. They should not have been. Tucker was 34-0 with 30 ko’s including one over Buster Douglas right before this fight.

He flew like a butterfly with shuffling too but did not sting like a bee...
Once tony also gave tough time to lenox lewis

Tony Tucker was a great boxer. First class athlete. Mike went in like a bison with little beauty in his fight. Landed more punches. They were both good.
Tyson never said a bad word about Tucker after the fight. He won Iron Mike's respect after that war.
Tony did well here. You can see what was to come in late 87 and all of 88 leading up to the Spinks fight. Just utter destruction. Then things started to come apart slowly. What a time I remember it all clearly. The absolute bad-ass-ness. The sporting world stopped whenever he had a fight on.
12 rounds in Tyson in early years of career...Tucker was rigth and a champion.
Tucker was a beast ❤️❤️❤️
Tony be proud. You did what no other has. Great job
Tucker needed warning and points off , he was clearly stopping the fight tying him up, holding his arms.
Mike Tyson would have destroyed Lennox lewis in 87. When they finally fought Tyson was a different fighter. RIP Cuss one of the best trainers in history
Lennox beat a prime Tucker. He would have given Tyson more trouble than Tucker.
@@schwabbakombo606 you sure? Tucker was far away from his prime actually
@@schwabbakombo606
Mike tyson beat lewis in sparring when tyson was 18، There are video clips of the sparring but Lennox Not OK to show up. this is prime for tyson and tucker.
Should Mike have fought in lower weight divisions? Due to his height he was always in reach disadvantage.
Nah he was good at his divisen and would end up 100-0 with kevin or cus in his corner
So no good without help
Dant e Yea cus was a good to tyson cus knew how to beat any fighter he even told mike tyson he would ko larry holmes with right hand and tyson did it, if cus would be alive in tyson whole career, tyson would retire without any loses. I also had few times dream about cus he is a god i get emotinal in my dreams u can feel he is a special person.
@@sonnyliston8863 I respect your tour right your opinion but I completely disagree, Mike was overrated, a myth that never was and got beat by every true champ he faced and got utterly schooled by Lennox the greatest of all times Lewis. On a totally separate point if a fighter is dependant on another individual such as cus or Rooney in this case it means the fighter is not that great without help.
On another totally separate point there is only one God and His name is Jesus Christ
Blessings
Dant e he lost after he left kevin roony, and there is no prove that jesus was a god
