What I like about Shadow is that, even when he's fully into his heel persona, he doesn't try to hide his background as a florist out of fear that it makes him look "uncool". His tricks all incorporate flowers in their names, his phone's got a cutesy flower case, and he's perfectly fine driving a pink car with tulips all over it. Dude's got no problems with mixing punk with prettiness.
@@febbledebble Wouldn't it be a fun twist if his manager also happened to have a skater persona? Then they could either be rivals without knowing the other's identity or find out early on and be a skating couple or a couple who are also rivals. Assuming they don't do the thing where she already has a partner, which would be a major downer for Shadow. Edit: Never mind, she's taken. And right before Shadow was gonna ask her out.
"Ill admit the Adam, Eva and Snake references are a novel touch. Subtle way of paying homage to the only other skateboarding anime" Not my dumbass going: The Bible???? 💀
i think my favorite description of Joe and Cherry are friends in a game of gay chicken that has gone on since they were in high school because neither is willing to loose
From a skaters perspective, I can attest to sk8 capturing the spirit of the sport.yes half the tricks break that laws.of physics but watching langa learn to ollie felt so so real to me
I also love how accurate the tricks that ARE real are animated. for so long skating in animation was just the skater hopping up while the board stayed glued to them and flipping midair, but this actually shows the right footing, foot drag directions, and names for every trick. seeing that blew me away
The show also pays attention to the small details, in the OP you can see flip marks on rekis shoes. When I first saw that, it blew my mind how authentic the show is.
I love Reki's emotional arc, because it perfectly reflects the experience not only of encountering people who are leagues better than us at something we love, but also that sometimes those are our friends. That mournful period where it feels like we're losing both the hobby and the friendship is hard. That's somewhat lost in other stories where the friend/rival is at basically the same level, or where we can see the "loser" will soon catch up (like in Haikyuu).
Honestly really reminded me of a few years ago when I felt inferior to my best friend who was a better artist than me, and sadly I ended up ruining our whole friendship for an entire schoolyear, but we made up after that and to this day we’re still best friends. God I love Sk8
@@petscopkid glad to know you didn't lose that friendship. Remember, if someone is better than you in some thing, learn from them, listen to their advices if they have any. That's how you become better. That's a lesson I've been learning since realizing it and damn, it changed my life
Funny story, as a kid I moved from another town and had no friends, saw my neighbor riding a skateboard and jumping a ramp and he invited me to join him. I didn't get good at skating that summer but I made a buddy.
"Best friends who hug each other shirtless and skateboard while staring into each other's eyes." Excuse me, that is exactly what my best friend and I do. I mean we're definitely gay, but we're not dating, we're just very good friends.
Thank you (i hope you weren't sarcastic). I thought like I'm the only one left who's aware that something called friendship exists and that really good and close friendship can look like that. The fact that gay person emphasized that makes me restore my faith in humanity, double thank you.
@@lojanta I have two incredibly platonic friendships so I'm often out spoken on platonic friendships in media. But also it's not our fault that writers and producers only want to write LGBT characters to be edgey, depressing, sexual or offensive to us. Hopefully in the near future there can be a healthy amount of platonic and romantic representation for same sex characters.
@@lojanta the people who freak out about shippers are no better, and sometimes even worse. And that’s coming from someone who’s not a shipper. It’s an anime; let people have fun with it. If it bugs you then stay out of the fandom
As a girl who has been watching anime for decades, I love how many of my male friends who have been watching this show have pointed out how it feels to be invested in a series where the fan service is targeted for women. The way that girls watch their favorite badass anime girls get played up as waifuu material is a feeling I have had to deal with since I was a kid, so to see guys now experiencing the idea that their favorite shonen bros are being played up as adorable soft boys gives us some level of kinship.
Is it really that bad? I’ve never seen sexualisation as something distracting or uncomfortable if it’s handled correctly-“correct” meaning you don’t have to look at embarrassingly unrealistic close-up shots of anime breasts or a ridiculously muscular guy’s six-pack every five minutes, instead reserving the fanservice for more special occasions. Then again, I am bisexual, so perhaps I feel a little different about this than someone who’s only attracted to one sex.
@@Old_Soul_ I get where you are coming from but I do have to disagree. Strong female characters have existed for almost as long as anime has been a thing. Android Kikaidar, Cyborg 009, Slayers, just to name a few older ones. There is a reason fans still discuss whether Sailor Moon would be able to defeat Goku if both characters were able to use their strongest abilities. One Piece women definitely walked so Jujutsu Keisen women could run. FMA still has some of the best women in anime and that series just celebrated it's 20 year anniversary. The problem I have is how these characters are treated outside of their cannon. One piece women are some of the most fetishized characters in shonen next to Fairy Tail and Slayers and Sailor Moon definitely made many comments on how girls and women are expected to be viewed by men. There has always been something discouraging about looking up to these characters only to have the fandoms objectify them. For the first time we are seeing male characters being put in the same spot. Such as Gojo from jjk being the most powerful being in that universe, only to be treated as a snack by female fans. Lol
@meimeihughes i disagree with you tho. To me men AND WOMEN have both objectified men and women...atleast as far as japan and asia is concerned. There is loterally term for it "fujoshi". Anybody into yaoi knows for a fact that women objectify male characters all the time. I think what youre referring to is the "shounen" genre doing the same thing....but even then we had character like Kurama from yu yu hakusho and kenshin from rurouni kenshin who were "idealized and fetishized" same w saint seiya.... Imo anime has ALWAYS had a female fanbase objectifying male characters just like men did female ones. But all the guys i know love this show, they think its hilarious
"Incredibly loud subtext" Yeah, subtext where Reki reads his little sisters the story of Cinderella, falls asleep and then dreams himself as Cinderella, who goes to the ball to meet Prince Langa. You know. Bro things! Man I sure hope I ever have a best male friend like that! At this point, I honestly can't care if Reki and Langa do kiss in the show or not, I'm so happy to watch their story. And I'm sure as hell excited for the drama CD LMAO
@@kaixiaxia EXACTLY, like, Reki my boy, I love you, but that is some grade A bisexual moment my guy (also, i think that can be counted as a spoiler? careful with those, some people might want to be free of them!)
Even though I'm gay and Adam does represent a harmful stereotype, I just love him so much. He has too much charisma and charm for me to take the stereotype seriously. He also says "Hey b*tches and bros and nonbinary h*es" in the dub, which I appreciate very much. Renga for life (also apparently Cherry and Joe's dub actors agreed to play their characters like they were in a relationship)
What I like about Sk8 is that it's not a world that revolves entirely around skating like say TCG anime. It just has some powerful and rich people that are REALLY into skating that makes things happen
@@mothersbasement I mean, we had that Dark Kaizer arc in GX. And 5Ds features a bunch of criminals and that one cop dude. Kinda weird the YGO didn't ever dive headfirst into that for a full show.
@@michaelwhary2745 The word was made up on the fly, it isn't some anime-specific jargon. "Himbo" is the male version of the word "bimbo", though with a more positive connotation. Meanwhile, "-tronics" is appended at the end to make a word that makes it sound like making a himbo is a feet of engineering or something similar (think of the word "electronics"; remove the "elec" standing for electricity and add in "himbo" to get "himbotronics").
@@michaelwhary2745 It's a made up word. A himbo is a good looking male character that is kinda endearingly dumb. It's derived from "bimbo", but unlike bimbo is usually used in a positive manner. So himbotronics would basically be the science of himbos or something like that.
Wonder Egg is great n' all, but Sk8 is honestly the best thing I've watched in at least a year. It's SUPER over-the-top in all the right ways, and I LOVE it.
I love that it has just enough story for you to be invested but the stakes feel low enough that you can sit back and relax while you watch it. It's the Horimiya of sports anime.
Its weird because the skating is in a racing format not the typical SLS format which they do sprinkle some street skating in the anime, but i dont know
Geoff (paraphrased): I’m not used to my gender being the focus of fan service. Me, a woman who watches anime: Man, I wonder how that feels. That aside, I love this anime! My friends and I have been fans of Utsumi since Free! and we can see her style in everything lol
yeah, I inmediatly screamed "oh shut up" at the screen when he said that lol seriously though, with these beautiful skater bois, wonder egg's magical girls fighting harassers and gender stereotypes, and with jujutsu, a shounen that not only doesn't have female characters for the sake of fan service but ALSO they are actual good characters with personality, I feel like I'm living the golden season of anime for female weebs
@@sofiipote7 Yeah like when you compare how males are presented in this anime to how girls are presented in most anime it’s not even comparable. To be fair, I don’t consider anime with cute/hot girls oversexualization, but I only consider it so when it’s pandering to men’s sexuality. Apart from Joe, I don’t necessarily see it sexualizing it’s characters (though as he mentioned they go heavy on the moe and the designs are more appealing to a female audience). Even Jojo sexualizes men more than this, though technically girls are sexualized in Jojo too so it balances out.
I was never a skater and yet I fallen in love with this anime. Everything about it just fits so well like a custom glove. Not to mention the bromances are very appreciated
@Rayna Carraway I know that feeling I was born on Super Bowl and have no love for sports and yet there are some sports anime that make me want to go out and play that sport in spite of my disdain for athleticism
Fun facts: When you mention custom gloves, did you know that downhill skater that bomb the hill wear a puck gloves? All of the SK8 cast wear them when doing the race and most of the turn is very accurate to real life equivalent!
I never skated either, but I’ve always had a fascination and appreciation for the skateboarding culture since I was a kid (looking at MTV and watching pro skaters like Tony Hawk). I recently got back into Sk8 and I fell in love with this series again. Everything from the main cast, the music, the adorable bromances, and fluid animations of the skateboarding races are such a sweet treat and Im not much of a sports anime person. Definitely one of the best series I got this year so far. (I lowkey want to do a Reki cosplay in the future. ☺️)
Adam is the most fun Villain we have gotten in a long time. Plus he's a complex character and I think him and Tadashi need to both go to therapy in the end.

Hey there Jeff As a fan who is living in Okinawa, thought i should drop a fun fact-- There are only A&Ws in Okinawa. Not in Mainland Japan. And their food is actually super different from the american/canadian ones. Not sure if someone else said that already, not gonna read through 328 comments lmao. As someone who grew up here, its super fucking hype to see an anime set here. Its very unique and different from Mainland. You should 100% visit here (whenever that can happen), try A&W in Oki! It's pretty different! (Not really sure if they actually serve poutine though)
I’m from America and I had no clue A&W had restaurants lol. This anime opened my eyes to that. I’m also living in Japan (not Okinawa) but Okinawa is one of the places I dream to visit once I can travel again. I’ll be sure to eat at A&W when I do :P what do you recommend from the menu?
Just a small detail I wanted to mention: The idea that Snowboarders and Skateboarders are easily able to learn the other respective activity after learning the other is actually a common misconception. In my case, I've been a snowboarder for most my life and just started to learn how to Skate about 2 years ago. At their fundamental basics (like stance and how you hold your weight) feel completely different other then maybe knowing that putting pressure on either your heels or toes is what controls which way you turn. Doesn't really matter too much to the quality of the show but I thought I'd mention it :)
They did kind of touch on that in the anime, didn’t they? When reki modified Langa’s board to make Langa more comfortable The anime places focus on instinctual fearlessness and confidence as really important to become a talented sk8er. I interpreted langas experience as a snowboarder as the reason he is able to disregard his safety and do really cool sk8er stunts in the present. I figured that’s where his sports background was most relevant. He has a leg up on reki, at least, who has confidence problems
@@eccentric_creampuff4983 If I'm honest, I'm not completely sure. I didn't watch the show yet but I heard them say something along the lines of how "his previous experience with snowboarding helped him learn to skateboard" and I also saw clips where they ducktape his feet to his skateboard. You can absolutely correct me if I was wrong on that! But mostly I just wanted to point out that there's a huge difference between the two sports. Once you understand snowboarding, it no longer feels as if you have to think about how you move. It's like you're able to go on autopilot because you know exactly how to hold your weight to go whatever speed you want and whichever direction you want. While, when switching to skateboarding, your board is much shorter and the way you hold your weight is completely different and in my opinion, much more sensitive. So it really felt as if it was a completely different skill to learn and it was mostly because of how you hold your weight, being elevated on 4 wheels, and having trucks that make it so your board can tilt despite your wheels being flat. Not so much an issue with bindings because skateboards are pretty grippy and it's actually nice to be able to hop off the board whenever you feel uncomfortable. As for building up confidence, for sure I think that helps! Terrain sports or anything that involves ramps or obstacles are different from anything else and It can be really terrifying the first time you try ramps or obstacles. But once you've already fallen over and over again, your fear to fall isn't really there anymore so it's easier to put yourself in situations where you'll fall but aren't scared. Idk :) let me know if there's anything else I should know about the show or if you have any questions. I'd also be really curious as to how a skateboarder turned Snowboarders would feel.
Thanks for that, same here. I got pushing and carving especially really easilly but I acc had a big mental block with learning to shuv it. Not because i couldn't, because I was terrified my feet werenf attached. I'm so ahooy i pushed through though
@@eccentric_creampuff4983 I didn't think about the possible confidence thing... I was really confused as to how Langa could improve so quickly to the point of being able to not only beat dudes who are older and more experienced, but dudes who are allowed to play as dirty as they want. Maybe the snowboarders are just as crazy as the skaters, though, and Langa has whatever "natural talent" is. Eh, I know nothing about sports, so whatever. :/
As far as I know, skate was born from surfers in USA to keep practicing their moves even when they weren’t on the water, so I can see the differences, the movement in water is different than the movement of snow, so even from the bases skate and snowboard are not similar
Ok I was talking to a friend about this and just imagine working the reception desk at this love hotel and an adult man walks in with an unconscious teenager in his arms and asks for a room
I was a little sad as a street skater to see it focus on a weird downhill skating battle concept (with regular boards??) but the characters and casual skating outside of S made it so addictive! Love this anime so much! We need a snowboarding anime next!!!
Finally someone talks about this show instead of Isekai of the season! Edit: Moushoko Tensai is an exception. I haven’t seen it but Gintoki voice actor=Masterpiece
sk8 is so seemingly effortlessly high-quality and enthralling that i forget that it is actually a huge accomplishment and milestone for sports anime (and not just my boyfriend cherry and sons being cute and gayly sad for 25 minutes a week) appreciate this video so much ^^
I -forced- asked my mom to watch this with me and she asked me if Joe and Cherry were married in the show because they act like a bickering married couple all the time. We finished watching it and she’s fully convinced that they’re married.
18:30 Say what you will about Adam and Langa, but that scene where Adam gives Langa a massive bouquet of roses in the most extra way possible and langa is just like "..thanks" cracks me up every time i remember it
I don't think it's fair to say that it's only gay "bait" like Free, I definitely think it's closer to Yuri on Ice representation. If you rewatch the show with the metaphor of skating = being queer in mind, it becomes apparent that it's a very intentional allegory from the writers. Especially Adam/Tadashi's story is clearly about two closeted gay men struggling with internalised homophobia and repression due to their strict family.
while it's true that a metaphor could be found in the series, i think it's not entirely deserving of the same credit as yuri on ice. you could argue that, in free, swimming is a metaphor for the relationships you form with other people that make life worthwhile. i think this message is taken even further than sk8 takes its message, and this is partially because free has like? 3 seasons?? so it might not be fair to compare the two lol. it's easy to remember free as full of fanservice and bait, but rewatching the series really reveals just how far it was willing to take its subject matter. but metaphor isn't representation, no matter how intentional or obvious it seems. yuri on ice had to be conservative with what it could and could not show, but it took the plunge in MANY more ways than sk8 and free do/did (flashback of yuri and victor first meeting, wedding rings, the "kiss," the airport reunion, skating is love, i could go on) and made the metaphors even more solid by actually delivering on the ideas. i love sk8 but i'm not giving it the benefit of the doubt til it puts its money where its mouth is and represents in meaningful, tangible ways.
Or the part when Langas mom is talking to him and thinks he's asking about sex or girl troubles, and even when she does start to think that's not what he's asking about, her advice still applies. But yea the reality is that sometimes relationships and passions aren't that different. It's only in the details and specifics that advice would change from how to deal with an SO, friend, or passion.
Honestly, I just want all the juicy adult drama, I would watch a whole show of just whatever fuckery Cherry and Joe are getting up to with Adam and Tadashi

I get that Langa’s snow theme is from his past experiences and all that but (speaking as a Canadian from very snowy places) he really is like snow in how soft and gentle and warm he is when he’s relaxed and having fun, like freshly fallen snow on a sledding hill (yes, I said snow is warm. Fresh snow piles are warmer and softer than my own bed, so long as I’m not touching it with bare skin) but when he’s focused and concentrated he’s like spring ice, snow melting in the sun and then freezing in the shadows into this rock hard pile of cold that makes for a dangerous snow pile. I mainly just wanted to mention how warm snow is and how that aspect can be seen in Langa as well. It insulates so well it melts itself and makes puddles hidden under the top layer of snow
As a Canadian who's bilingual because of a parent I heavily relate to being able to speak my second language but not being able to write (or read well). I just thought it was really cool and made Langa feel so much more real.
Sk8's premise is so wild and crazy, but the characters believe in it so much that it feels so grounded. I just love this show and the characters. This first season planted so many seeds as foreshadowing that I really can't wait for more from this show Edit: You mentioned Reki n his angst era and now you've enabled me to talk endlessly about my no.1 fixation so get ready Let me get this straight. I am an avid nerd of film making. I love seeing the small details, realism ( but not that kind of realism) and the number one rule of "show dont tell" portrayed in anime. Especially sk8. On my 1st rewatch of the show I realized how everything is symbolized perfectly in the birds where Langa and Reki do their DAP in the morning. In the first scene of episode 7, theres two birds together on the left side of the railing. While Langa and Reki greet each other in the morning. The second scene, theres one on the railing. While Reki spaces out and skates past Langa. Then in the 10th episode, while Langa waits for Reki ( even if he know he won't come after Reki distanced himself ), theres not even a bird on the railway. I loved how realistic Langa and Reki were when they finally reconciled. As someone who had a fall out with a friend before ,I know the feeling of finally seeing your friend again. That excitement and joy, like you forgot you two ever fought. But then when you're finally face to face with that friend, you realize that "Ah, I made it awkward..." and that excitement falters. I loved the show dont tell aspect of their reconciliation. They literally showed Langa and Reki skating *closer* to each other. Flying higher and higher, but then always going back to each other. It was one of the best scenes I've seen in a long, long time.
I replied to a comment with this, but thought I should leave it here too: For some reason, I kinda like shows that depict strong relationships without clarifying the specific type of bond. Idk how to put it, but I guess I can appreciate Reki & Langa's bromance more, knowing that even if it isn't romantic, they truly care for each other and offer needed support. Like, if they're just friends, they're really good friends. If they love each other, I know they love each other for the right reasons (it's not shallow). And I'm fine either way. They can be together on screen, and I won't be thinking abt whether or not they should date. I just appreciate their overall chemistry.
Idk I think it goes a little deeper than subtext with reki and langa. Their individual arcs directly depend on the other. Their relationship is the engine of the entire plot. I think friendship is inherently romantic anyways and homosocial relationships like theirs potentially even moreso. Basically they don't have to kiss to be boyfriends lol
I think people are using the term "queerbait" way too lightly. I think sk8 would be between Free and Yoi in terms of "representation". I dont think it will go all the way like Yoi did, but I think its ahead of Free, Reki and Langa's arcs depend on each other, the emotional connection they have is essential to the plot. All of their interactions that could be read as romantic, affect the story in some way and continue developing from there. They might never be confirmed as a couple, but you cant tell me their interactions are just bait when those interactions are tied to a deep relationship that is explored seriously throughout the show. Also you have to go through so much mental gymnastics to say that the convo between Langa and his mom wasnt a confirmation of Langa's feelings towards Reki, I mean, his mom used the word "suki" (like) which has romantic connotations. I think it will be left up to interpretation because yknow, in the end, they are two dudes.
And while all that subtext heavily implies lgbt+ representation, it all comes with the smoke and dagger of being just vague enough to defend the show as totally heterosexual to differing countries. The problem was never how real and meaningful the relationships are, the problem is the underlying suggestion that lgbtq people need to not be explicitly lgbtq( explicit as in clear unobtrusive understandability, not explicit as in sexual) Any other romance would never have to beat around the bush. It’s only with lgbtq that it has to be vague and open to interpretation. Langa’s mom can ask about his friend and if they are together and ok, using romantic verbiage… as long as it ends on a joke revealing that she was under the impression they were talking about a girl. The problem with queerbaiting is less of a problem show by show, and more of an overarching medium, because it implicitly implies to lgbtq people watching that they can only have those deep emotional romantic connections they crave as long as they never put lgbtq words to and don’t show it to anyone else Sorry for the rant, I know you meant nothing bad about your comment. I just wish others wouldn’t treat “good enough” representation as actually good representation
I know most of the audience wouldn’t care but I really hope they’re not queerbating. Reki and Langa seem to have a really intense connection to each other that exceeds friendship levels. Please the gay anime community needs this lmao
Yeah they really make it look as gay as they can with all the blushing and confessions in ep 10. Also with that one scene with Langa and his mom and the Cindereki audio drama. These boys clearly care for each other a lot and I would love to see them get together but at the same time i don't want to get my hopes up. So if they end up just friends then this is some really strong queerbaiting they're doing here which absolutely sucks. We just want some good representation.
@@cyan2225 Completley agree. It’s not even up for debate anymore, last weeks episode ended with them really close to each other as Reki said he wants to skate with Langa infinitely as romantic music played....I really hope we get some actual confirmation. They’re baiting so much even with ADAM being jealous of Reki who he sees as a third wheel stealing away his EVE. THERE IS NO STRAIGHT EXPLANATION!
Me too, I’ve never been this invested in a fictional relationship. I’m so scared I’m getting my hopes up but I really think they’ll kiss or at least confess to each other in the last episode.

Honestly, I think it's a blessing both Sk8 and Wonder Egg are airing at the same time. Both are filled to the brim with dazzling, bright coloured sakuga and blow my mind with their sound design and voice acting. But I need the wholesome, clear simplicity of Sk8 to be able to breath again after Wonder Egg didn't only break the mold in regards to realism and storytelling, but also broke my heart, brain and spirit. Especially the latest episode left me impressed, but also deeply triggered. And that only speaks to how well and real they depict complex issues. But Sk8 is a breath of fresh air that definitely takes up a space in my heart as well. Just like Horimiya didn't break the mold in regards to a good romance story but just did every little part so right, I feel Sk8 does the same thing for a lovely sports anime. And I will take this moment to be incredibly grateful we get this smorgasbord of content this season on top of some stellar sequels.
The aesthetics of the show are great and all but what really kept me coming back were the characters. They're all so insanely lovable and their dynamics with each other are so fun to see, esp the dynamics between Reki and Langa. I do see their relationship as a romantic one, especially after what Langa said to his mom and after the events of episode 10. I have a strong feeling that the writers won't actually say that they're queer, but everything regarding the show's writing makes it feel like they intended to show an mlm relationship
Legitimately thought Reki and Langa were gonna kiss when Langa won against Adam. The way he flew into his arms and then they were just lying on the floor, all smiley and happy??? yeah, i don‘t think of it as platonic either lmao
the character dynamics in this anime are so wholesome and feel very natural even in anime form with everything exaggerated for entertainment. i hope that the relationship undertones in the show will develop into actual romantic relationships, but i also really appreciate the friendship reki and langa has and wouldn't mind wherever it goes. the sk8 fandom is also really funny and nice, and i love everyone's reactions and analyzations to the slightest interactions between the characters :)
This has to be the one anime I thought I would NEVER enjoy but I’m glad I got into it. Also it’s hilarious hearing about the shipping especially when it comes to the dub version and since as of today they released a drama CD called “CindeReki” and yes Langa IS the prince in the story, Joe is the Fairy Godmother and Adam is the narrator
"It suffered severe production hangups on account of, you know, the Thing" Damn, it's pretty impressive that these people managed to make an amazing anime AND fight off a body snatching horror from outer space at the same time.
Ngl I love how Langa is the exact stereotypical Canadian. Shy, apologetic, loves poutine. But am I the ONLY one who isn’t upset when hasn’t mentioned Timmies? As a Canadian I can tell you that is the most important thing in a Canadian’s life, as I live off it
This show is the type of show we have not had since 2006 Air Gear and its godly dub the attitude, music and characters just make you feel hype GIVE US EVEN MORE FUK SAKE can we get more reviews for AG its underrated AF
Man I'm so glad I'm not the only one who just loved Air Gear. It was like just plain "sports trash" in some ways and I freaking loved it, rewatched it all the time. Dorohedoro is joining it in my 2000s anime nostalgia lineup and now I have sk8 too. I hope it gets a reboot like Fruits Basket, though sk8 feels like a spiritual successor.
I adored the Air Gear manga all the way until it went off the deep end for its closing arc. Things just got a little too over-the-top, high-stakes, and wacky. It had freaking President Obama placed inside the body of a Japanese teenage girl. And, obviously, Rollerblading for the Fate of the World. When it was just about this crazy illegal sport, Air Gear was S+ tier.
I gotta say though, I gotta give props to the creators for making such and flamboyant and entertaining villain that I ABSOLUTELY DETEST. It's such a strange occurrence where I'm intensely disgusted by Adam and yet I can't look away from him. It makes it even more fun and exhilarating.
I would love all that gay subtext to be canon but I'm afraid it'll turn into a Free! situation where's it's not confirmed or denied, not that it has to be confirmed but with all the people screaming on twitter that it's canon cause Langa said he liked Reki when we dont even know what "like" means to Langa. These people are setting themselves up with high expectations and i've already been burned enough so i'm not gonna say anything is canon until it's blindingly obvious, at least to me.
In my opinion they are canon. They emphasized a lot Langa's "like" in episode 9 during his talk with his mother. She was talking about the person Langa was romantically involved with assuming they were a girl but when he said "Girl?", in that moment it was cemented that Langa's feelings for Reki are romantic
@@verotile_ Yes but Langa isn't the brightest boy and doesn't take social cues very well and only we the audience understood she was talking romantics which is why Langa was confused about his mom talking about a girl. I'm not saying they dont love each other, im simply saying that scene doesn't mean much in terms on canon
in the japanese dub langas mom uses the word "suki" which means liking someone romantically. its not as intense as love and the line she said could be translated as "you have a crush on this person, right?"
Ngl this show actually inspired me to finally get a skateboard. When I saw that Langa and I were the same age and the same Insecurities, I was SOLD! Now the only thing I'm missing is the super close friendship like Reki and Langa....
SK8 has been so underrated and under appreciated this season even though it’s some of the funnest relatable anime of recent times. Gives me the same warm and hype feels I have when watching Free!!
As someone who skates frequently I was so looking forward to a skate anime, something I have been wishing in since childhood, I admit that I was disappointed by Sk8 for not being a "real" skate anime which represented the world, the subculture and the skating somewhat realistically, hell I was screaming out loud when I saw a guy using explosives or a talking AI skateboard. But then, I was watching it with friends and decided to turn off the brain and enjoy the absolute over the top-ness and hot bois flirting with each other, and we all had a hell of a fun time. This might not be my long awaited skate anime, but at least it's good time in company!
SK8 is the true dark horse of the season. Wonder egg and kemono jihen are great and all, but SK8 has been a consistently fun watch. Don't be turned off by the BL vibes if you aren't in to that because it's not one. Rather you like skating or not, give this fun underrated show a try!
I found Reki's "moping" arc almost suspiciously relatable. I've gone through almost the exact same situation. Not to brag, but I've been performing relatively well academically, getting B's on rare occasions and only in subjects that I don't have an aptitude for (cough, French). Then one day, this transfer student showed up and we immediately bonded through JJBA (random, I know). As time passes, I realised how exceptional of a person he was. He got better grade records than I ever will, he already has a piano diploma in his high school years, he works as an accountant for his mom's company, and the list goes on. There have been days when I was so jealous and conflicted I couldn't even talk to him. It was as if he was in a completely different world and we were just not a good match for each other. Of course, I got through this by accepting that there are those who are simply better out there, albeit after a lot of moping. Reki's words resounded within me. "Skateboarding is so fun!", he said. Although it has little to do with my situation, I pondered the question "Am I having fun?". Now, I try to spend my time as wisely as possible, for my grades, passion, family and friends. I'll probably never be as great as he is now, but that really doesn't matter anymore. I get to hang out with him and my other friends. This is even more important now that I have to care about my GPA. So, guys, treasure your friends and don't compare yourself to others. Have fun out there, just like our hot-blooded and charismatic redhead!
Great Video, and honestly impressed by how much of what you've covered (including ADAM's stereotyping, lack of women in the show, "is it baiting or is it subtext," etc etc) are things that I've discussed with friends while watching episodes together! I do think there's one thing I want to add to the conversation though - and that's how this show is *constantly* in motion. Not just in terms of plot, or shots or what have you - but even in simple conversational scenes, people are constantly interacting with each other and their environments! To my own recollection, I can't think of a still conversation scene. Plus not only are they interacting with each other and moving in ways that hammer home information to the viewer, completely unrelated sequences will be happening in tandem to the conversation as well - the first example to come to mind is Reki & Langa's interactions with Manager Oka's pet Fennec. It not only shows off how polished the show is, but keeps a continual sense of momentum that I think is, at least thematically, super fitting for a skateboarding anime :)
This is actually super interesting, I've really enjoyed this aspect but I hadn't explicitly realized what it was, but now that I think about it, it makes sense
i think the reason there were so many sports animes but no skateboarding animes is because sports just have rules for the most part. skateboarding is soo technical. things like foot placement, gravity, weight, balance, and so much more come into play. not to mention style. everyone has a different style and sk8 did a really good job at representing that. Joe is big and muscly so is style is very powerful (like when he was racing Langa) and he really takes advantage of his strength. Adam's is very romantic and almost scary, with the way he dances on his board, as his character does a good job at making the viewer feel slightly uncomfortable. shadow's character (in S) is very extravagant and aggressive so he goes all out and puts on a show. I love this anime so much. another thing I love is the colour and background. If you look at when they're just on the street with everyone else and at school, its very normal and basic, but once the skating scenes begin like at s the vibes instantly change. it feels like a whole other world whenever they enter the skate shop or Reki's bedroom. it really shows the world of skateboarding through art and stlye.
The only bad thing is that I don't think they will kiss or acknowledge the incredibly obvious gay romance between Langa and Reki, and that makes me a little sad.
@@AngelaWells Nah I'd say it's more unrequited on Cherry's part towards Adam. Adam is gonna end up with Tadashi LOL they're such a typical Victorian master x servant romance.
@@kaixiaxia Considering how Adam treats Tadashi, I really hope they don’t end up together. The other relationships in Sk8 are way healthier and built off of mutual respect, having those two together would beyond undermine that.
@@AngelaWells nah, its not gay at all. There is no obvious signs of the trio of being into eachother, its just friends going through some personal problems. Me and my friends had a similar situation before where one just became a dickhead after getting new friends etc etc
In my almost 9 years of watching anime I’ve never been more invested, it’s absolute brain rot. I started watching it just because I thought Joe was hot, I didn’t expect to end up being emotionally attached. 10/10, truly an amazing anime. It sucks that the finale is coming so soon but I really want to see Reki and Langa get a happy ending. I can’t think of any other ship more deserving of being canon.
Ok so I was drawing while watchen this, and I heard him say “kill u a” and I dropped everything, and needed to rewatch that scene. Like that is the correct way to say his name, can we make it official.
I'm gonna be so sad if Reki and Langa don't kiss by the end of it. I know I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment, but god damn these two are too cute together.
Man... Reki's character had SO MUCH POTENTIAL! his ability to build & design skateboards, the way he teaches or inspires people, especially Langa). Reki has so much skill both on and off the skateboard, i just kinda wish they explored that more.
my friend sat our whole friend group down to watch this, and i have to admit it seems pretty good. i say seems because two of the others were quipping/live-dubbing over it while we were watching it, and half of my memories of this are just one of them doing a frightfully good Langa impression monologuing about duct tape

@@kleinerdiktator I'm from Spain. So a spanish twitter user said that Adam physically resembles the current spanish president, and since then is a joke that some spanish fans have (It doesn't help that Adam is sometimes a walking spanish stereotype)
this show single handily got me into skateboarding enough for me to get a skateboard and buy a skateboard just to drop it after a month but other than that this was an amazing show that kept me up all night bingeing this show
Sk8 feels a lot like this season's Appare Ranman: Both fantastic anime with not enough people giving them the recognition they deserve. Appropriate enough, Geoff made videos shouting them both off. Kudos for that!
Shadow is a great character and he's underrated as hell.

That arc was so relatable

As a girl who has been watching anime for decades, I love how many of my male friends who have been watching this show have pointed out how it feels to be invested in a series where the fan service is targeted for women. The way that girls watch their favorite badass anime girls get played up as waifuu material is a feeling I have had to deal with since I was a kid, so to see guys now experiencing the idea that their favorite shonen bros are being played up as adorable soft boys gives us some level of kinship.
Soo true! You put my feelings into words.
Lol

When reki modified Langa’s board to make Langa more comfortable
The anime places focus on instinctual fearlessness and confidence as really important to become a talented sk8er.
As far as I know, skate was born from surfers in USA to keep practicing their moves even when they weren’t on the water, so I can see the differences, the movement in water is different than the movement of snow, so even from the bases skate and snowboard are not similar

sk8 is so seemingly effortlessly high-quality and enthralling that i forget that it is actually a huge accomplishment and milestone for sports anime (and not just my boyfriend cherry and sons being cute and gayly sad for 25 minutes a week)
appreciate this video so much ^^
I -forced- asked my mom to watch this with me and she asked me if Joe and Cherry were married in the show because they act like a bickering married couple all the time. We finished watching it and she’s fully convinced that they’re married.
Langa on your ending screen was too cute oh my god
that was a last minute addition but I'm glad we took the extra effort to do it!
Especially Adam/Tadashi's story is clearly about two closeted gay men struggling with internalised homophobia and repression due to their strict family.
listen, I know this is supposed to be serious and all but I just can't stop laughing at the sentence "metaphor of skating = being gay"
@@faliqaf.2062 I KNOW IT SOUNDS RIDICULOUS LIKE THE SHOW ITSELF BUT I SWEAR IT'S TRUE LMAO
while it's true that a metaphor could be found in the series, i think it's not entirely deserving of the same credit as yuri on ice. you could argue that, in free, swimming is a metaphor for the relationships you form with other people that make life worthwhile. i think this message is taken even further than sk8 takes its message, and this is partially because free has like? 3 seasons?? so it might not be fair to compare the two lol. it's easy to remember free as full of fanservice and bait, but rewatching the series really reveals just how far it was willing to take its subject matter. but metaphor isn't representation, no matter how intentional or obvious it seems. yuri on ice had to be conservative with what it could and could not show, but it took the plunge in MANY more ways than sk8 and free do/did (flashback of yuri and victor first meeting, wedding rings, the "kiss," the airport reunion, skating is love, i could go on) and made the metaphors even more solid by actually delivering on the ideas. i love sk8 but i'm not giving it the benefit of the doubt til it puts its money where its mouth is and represents in meaningful, tangible ways.
*So Sk8 is not Str8?*
I like that this show shows male bonding and boys showing emotions. It’s needed more for guys to actually start sharing their emotions.
When Langa said push me on his first skate down the mountain i died laughing. And seeing that once again made me experience death for a second time.

Sk8's premise is so wild and crazy, but the characters believe in it so much that it feels so grounded. I just love this show and the characters. This first season planted so many seeds as foreshadowing that I really can't wait for more from this show
Edit: You mentioned Reki n his angst era and now you've enabled me to talk endlessly about my no.1 fixation so get ready
Let me get this straight.
I hope "Double Vegeta Mickey Mouse" becomes a MB running gag for years to come...
I can't help but laugh EVERY TIME that is said, and it's like for 5 minutes straight
I replied to a comment with this, but thought I should leave it here too:
For some reason, I kinda like shows that depict strong relationships without clarifying the specific type of bond.
The problem was never how real and meaningful the relationships are, the problem is the underlying suggestion that lgbtq people need to not be explicitly lgbtq( explicit as in clear unobtrusive understandability, not explicit as in sexual)
Any other romance would never have to beat around the bush. It’s only with lgbtq that it has to be vague and open to interpretation.
Langa’s mom can ask about his friend and if they are together and ok, using romantic verbiage… as long as it ends on a joke revealing that she was under the impression they were talking about a girl.
The problem with queerbaiting is less of a problem show by show, and more of an overarching medium, because it implicitly implies to lgbtq people watching that they can only have those deep emotional romantic connections they crave as long as they never put lgbtq words to and don’t show it to anyone else
Sorry for the rant, I know you meant nothing bad about your comment. I just wish others wouldn’t treat “good enough” representation as actually good representation
Is free even bl? I dont think it deserves to be named as one of gay rep in anime
This anime has ALL the things. It’s such a blast to watch and the characters are so great. It’s a true joy of 2021.

These people are setting themselves up with high expectations and i've already been burned enough so i'm not gonna say anything is canon until it's blindingly obvious, at least to me.
remember when yuri on ice came ep7 came out and people were like "YUP definitely bait DEFINITELY"
Free: I've got the best ship-teasing!
SK8 the Infinity: Hold my poutine.
By the way I love Langa and I'm so glad you acknowledge how moe he is
As someone who skates frequently I was so looking forward to a skate anime, something I have been wishing in since childhood, I admit that I was disappointed by Sk8 for not being a "real" skate anime which represented the world, the subculture and the skating somewhat realistically, hell I was screaming out loud when I saw a guy using explosives or a talking AI skateboard.
I was wondering if it was yaoi or not?
Have fun out there, just like our hot-blooded and charismatic redhead!
the TWEWY music is actually super fitting for this anime, how did I not make that connection
Just as I was thinking about watching this anime after Jujutsu Kaisen end for the season. It's like you read my mind, dude!
i think the reason there were so many sports animes but no skateboarding animes is because sports just have rules for the most part. skateboarding is soo technical. things like foot placement, gravity, weight, balance, and so much more come into play. not to mention style. everyone has a different style and sk8 did a really good job at representing that.
