    Anouther great way to tell if your knife is really razor sharp is to feel it with your neck. *sarcasm

    • @vnives
      @vnives 7 років тому +21

      Actually, that's true...when you shave your face you are more likely to notice a dull or damaged edge when shaving your neck because it is a more sensitive and tender area. Usually that is where you will see the most irritation to the skin.

    • @TheEleutheromaniac20
      @TheEleutheromaniac20 7 років тому +5

      mvellekamp ok but is that really necessary? feeling a knife with your neck, and in the video with your tongue. I feel like pretty sharp is sharp enough to get most jobs done, and the risk of testing a knife in those ways is simply not worth it.

    You sir are the pinnacle of cool!
    I tend to use the shaving method or by using a similar method to your thumb one I will very gently run my finger across the edge with very limited pressure and will feel how easily the edge will slice through the finer layer of dead skin until it barely touches new skin, its unsafe if you don't have full control so I don't recommend anyone try it unless they know what they are doing.
    Also you end up with a lot of bald patched and your finger tips look like crisscross a lot lol

  • @freman007
    @freman007 7 років тому +1

    Yes. Grind both sides till you get a burr, then knock off the burr with your preferred technique. A few reverse strokes on a fine stone, a leather strop, running the edge through a wine cork. I have to admit I don't let a sharp edge near anything on my body more vital than a thumb (brushed across the edge, not along) nail edge (to check edge for imperfections) or arm hair (just to see if it's sharp enough). Even my efforts, which I'm sure don't compare, leave an edge sharp enough to do some serious damage to me.

    one way i know the sharpness of a blade is to rub the blade against my jeans. if its pretty sharp youll make some lint, and if its razor sharp you got yourself even more "lint"

    I do the phone book paper technique and the same type than your thumb technique but i use my index finger in a different way, i make "slide" my finger on the edge and feel if it bite the skin.
    I also check the edge with my flash lite to see where the lite is reflecting, it shows where are the damages on the apex of the edge.

    craziest "sharpness test" I've heard of came from a local mine from where I live.
    Guy was gifted a rather beautiful knife for his long and faithful time as an employee at the mining company (where Health and Safety was a big thing).
    This guy was the rather typical boastful tough-guy miner who loudly proclaimed "Typical, they give out a pretty knife that can't cut for shit" and as to demonstrate the sharpness of his blade, if not his wit, dragged the knife over his belly.
    He was quickly rushed to the hospital, having partially disemboweled himself.
    They stopped gifting knives to employees at that company after that :P

    Good to see someone else feels compelled to finish shaving all the way down the forearm to avoid those unnatural bald patches. Gotta test on both arms too to be sure the edge isn't misaligned.
    Another test I use sometimes is to see if a knife will cleanly slice Kleenex sticking up out of the box. Admittedly I can't do this with all of them, but those few that can....

    I'm not a pro but i do sharp my own kitchen knifes with a grinder and a rock wheel. Then i give them shine with a felt wheel and some polish green chalk. And it seems that it works pretty well at removing that edge too besides giving a nice shine. I guess that a leather wheel is not really indispensable. Am i right or am i wrong?

      i personally sharpen mine with a honing steel first, then with a very smooth whetstone and after that with a leather strap. that does make them pretty sharp.

    lmao ive always tested my edge by shaving leg hair.. in the summer it looks crazy.. ill have patches missing all over my legs

  • @r1w3d
    @r1w3d 7 років тому +1

    Use to shave a spot on my arm to test the edge now I just use a leg cause I only wear pants. keeps you from having obvious bare spots. I also test every edge for bite on my right index finger right on the print. If it gives good bite I then run the full edge across it in increments to make sure all is evenly sharp by giving the same bite at the same depth into the finger print.

      I Guess on the same point sharpness is a matter of relativity being that i wouldn't want a polished edge on a knife used for cutting things like rope for that i prefer the edge to have tooth that you get straight from a diamond stone or grit stone before getting to the level of mesh.

    What I generally do cause I'm lazy is a really gently put my four fingers on the blade's edge and I just really gradually increase the force on the blade until I feel like it's just about to cut me. It gives you a really good idea of how much it takes to cut
