  • Identifying bamboo species can be tricky. Today I stumbled across a large grove, and upon close inspection, it appears to be Phyllostachys aurea. How can I tell?

We had -20° windchill and my p. aurea lost all its leaves. It’s shooting so I googled around to see when it might leaf out again and stumbled across the most well written and awful webpage. Will it actually destroy my house and kill all the native plants in a 9.3 mile area? Am I a war criminal for planting it?

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience. I would suspect that chatgpt provided the "well-written" content, as it does for so many worthless websites. Hopefully new leaves come out this spring, but it's possible that the culms froze to death, in which case you'll have to wait for the new shoots to sprout and leaf out.

Looking again, some of them have the tiniest bit of green. Double the number of shoots from last year. Think I’m going to try p. iridescens this year. I think that’s the beefiest I can grow here lol.

I have this same variety which died back in 2021 when Texas had the Arctic blast. It is very easy to manage this so it won’t take over your land. Couple things you can do.
You can Cut the unwanted shoots.
Goats horses and cows love to eat bamboo.
You can also use the bio mass and Turn it into biochar.
There is a lot more. Outstanding plant

It’s all leafed back out, I’m very pleased. The weird thing is this year’s culms are smaller, almost like the plant diverted energy into making new leaves on the old ones. I’m intrigued by biochar, I have fabulous soil if you’re making bricks. Might be a good fix for my clay.
