  • Did you know that St. Michael's Hospital is a Regional Stroke Centre with a dedicated stroke unit? This means that patients can receive lifesaving treatment after someone has had a stroke.
Stroke units are considered the gold standard for patients admitted to the hospital with an acute stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack. Ontario hospitals that provide acute stroke care are working towards meeting the new Ontario Health definition of a stroke unit.
Stroke unit care can save lives and support patients throughout the recovery process. Research finds that expertise within Stroke Units leads to smoother transitions within the health care system, an increased possibility of returning home, and a decrease in the likelihood of death and disability by approximately 30 per cent.
