2:13 Speaking from experience as a 3D artist at _other_ companies for the past 9 years of my life, this is very true. Some departments might be pulling 40-80 hour work weeks+weekends while others do their 40 and go home. I once worked a job where the art department worked normal hours, but the software department was so far behind that for 2 months straight they worked Saturdays and Sundays + weekday overtime. There is HUGE sink-or-swim culture mindset in this industry. At Full Sail University they hammered this home with such an uncanny schedule. One month your classes are 9am to 5pm, the next month it's split where lab time is 4am-8am, and lecture is 1pm - 4pm. If my high school sleeping habits didn't destroy my circadian rhythm, college absolutely did. Year 5 of working at my last job was what finally broke me and made me stoic as a stone. I had a 2 year contract and needed 10 people at minimum to get us to our end proposal date on time, but management gave me 3 bodies and instructed me to just re-scope the backlog every sprint (sprints were 3 weeks instead of the traditional 2 at this particular place). It took me 4 months working with the software and systems departments to build the initial backlog before our start date. Staff never came, and every 3 weeks I'd have to take 8 days more or less to re-balance the entire project's backlog. If I had staffing we could have been done in a year and 2 months. We ended up taking the full 2 year window and I finally got my staffing when we were 3/4ths done with the art assets. It still came out to be an awesome project, but I didn't want to do anything after we delivered it... which some diety must have heard me because the company could _not_ find any new work for us, and laid everyone off. Last I heard the company went from a staffing of 187 to just 16. My company stocks weren't too great either. Almost a decade of loyalty and I have a whole 40 dollars to my retirement plan because they didn't offer 401k matching. Pro tip, don't work for a company that pushes ESOPs unless they're already a fortune 500 company. I have intentionally been staying out of the industry for 11 months now, just taking freelance illustration jobs wherever I can nab 'em. It has its own basket of stress and the pay isn't that great, but being able to sleep whenever, eat whenever, and decide what jobs you take is a fat breath of fresh air. The best part though is I can post *everything* I work on without being under a bloody NDA. The work hours were bad enough, but not having anything to show for 9 years of effort spiritually hurts. All 3 jobs had NDAs; the first two never shipped their games, and the third company was milsim. 9 years of backlog ranging from post apocalyptic sand dune merchant trucks, to hydraulically operated aircraft arrestor systems, and I can't show any of it. I'll get back into the industry sometime this year. I need to secure a house loan, and freelance isn't credible enough.

I watched a video about a month ago when the email was still very new, essentially the video was discussing how it's a legal loophole that many videogame companies instill. During crunchtime to get a game or console out, many videogame companies will hire hundreds of new talent to aid wrapping up projects, and when they near the completion they pull a fast one on these employees, telling them they aren't allowed to work from home anymore or something of the like, forcing many of these new talents out of the company. If they aren't able to come back in, they will be put off indefinitely, which makes them quit which means Rockstar doesn't have to pay any severance packages, AND the bonus of sweeping them under the rug because they have a policy that goes "regardless of how many hours you've worked on a game, if you do not work at Rockstar when it releases you will NOT be included in the credits". Yes that is a real policy at Rockstar, basically it's a way to silence these people and pretend like they had no part in Rockstar at all. They've done stuff similar to this in the past, but this is the most public and worst offender of the situation. It's all one giant sham to trick new employees into helping, then forcing them to quit so Rockstar pays no severance and not including them in credits to make sure they aren't noticed. Disgusting actions, seriously.

The obvious satire mixed with dark and edgy humor are what made Rockstar what they were, it fits the name of the company pretty well, you could make work conditions better, but removing the "boys club" part of making actually funny jokes and on-point satire? Why not change the company name already, you're not Rockstars anymore.
The amount of crunch that these developers are going through (i have multiple friends working at rockstar) is bad. I dont mind offensive language at all but overworking your employees is terrible. I rarely have nights out with these friends due to this. They really do need to start treating employees better

Psyched for GTA6 too!
ill be honest, while the crunch can suck its a requirement for an industry like yours. In most industries you can just keep churning out new products within months. In the game industry it takes years to make a single new product, so making sure the product gets out on time is a must.
@@MuffTuglick "On time"... Tell me exactly who dictates how a game is on time to be released (or not), what they gain from it and what consequences it leaves for the devs and us? You'll quickly see the whole picture.

idk what people these days consider edgy but theres a difference between edgy and using slurs as example i recently playing gta vice city stories and the most i've seen is a bunch of hilly billy confederates say " how high can you jump boy " to a black character , I don't recal a moment from old games where a character is straight up throwing slurs besides calling someone a fag, other than that throwing slurs wouldn't be considered funny humor either theres better ways to make the same humor and making it implicit like they done in the past
I find mental exhaustion to be worse than physical exhaustion. There are many days where I actually miss physical labor. The hard part about their crunch time is that they are expected to be creative and find solutions to problems. Mentally, you cannot complete these tasks no matter how much time you throw at the problem, whereas with physical labor you can just hire more bodies to complete the work.
only about groups of people that are allowed to receive "offensive" jokes. which are probabaly white men. Everything else will be turned down or removed. No jokes about women, no jokes about people of color and no jokes about LGBTQ people. they removed those things in the past and in the new game it will get a lot worse.
I fear they're going to take a "safe edgy" route and perhaps even a refusal to punch down at all. Of course we haven't seen anything yet, but from all the little changes R* made to GTAV over the years as well as some concerning quotes, I can't really say I have a lot of faith in New Rockstar.
Yeah, it is very dehumanizing. People like that really don't consider that employee wellbeing creates the masterpieces they enjoy. Back in the 2000's Dan Houser, Terry Donovan and 2 others would often scream at each and throw things across the room when there was a communication error. When RDR2 was in development they brought in a guy who was compared to Darth Vader. In all fairness, we are in a time where AAA studios have pumped out garbage game on top of garbage game GTA 6 is going to either make or break rockstar. Im positive Rockstar sees this and wants to make sure the game they have been working on for over 8 years is going to be perfect and getting closer and closer to launch day Rockstar needs all hands on deck for the polishing phase. Edit: Not to mention that trailer leak costed them millions. so I can deff see security being a big factor here.
Right. The evidence is clear. Security is a big concern. One of these leaks came from somebody child's who had access to the employee's computer, as an example. Many other things could happen. Mentioning that "productivity hasn't decreased since working from home" is bogus. Comparing the time it takes to make terrible, unfinished and unpolished games to what games used to be (meaning the same time to make good, finished and polished games) isn't exactly the best metric to use. Sure "productivity" remained the same, both games released in the same time frame, but one product clearly got more work into it than the other.
the only reason certain games are garbage/ mid nowadays is because there are no boundaries being pushed anymore. All it is now is pretty graphics/ textures with a sub-par to not good story with a lot of certain inclusiveness by lgbtq ect and okay at best, mechanics. Spiderman web of shadows did everything spider man 2 did better years ago. I have fear Rockstar will tone down the humour as a safe way to say "we don't wanna be punished by game journalism" because of the normalisation that mediocrity is okay (by certain companies) and to avoid being cancelled for not having enough representation. im fine with inclusiveness as long as its not a deterrent to what made these games good.

I’m no optimist but I feel like it’s not actually as bad as you describe. Think of the same situation with something like the heists. Announcing it will happen just at a later date is not necessarily bad.
Contrary to popular belive, productivity actualy goes down when a company tightens deadlines and coherses employees to work more hours. Overworking leads to employees missing out on social events outside of work, sleeping less and, for people suffering from mental health issues, weakens mental health further. This in turn causes those employees to be drained of willpower and make mistakes which take way more time to fix later on then the extra work hours could possibly compensate. Plenty of studys demonstrate that a 4 day work week would actualy increase productivity. You may ask why we don't do this already and the answere is that there is a fundamental disconnect between company owners and managers and the workers under their controll. These monarchs and their henchmen have no incentive to care for their workers and every incentive to extract wealth from them.
Corporations have never, do not, and never will view (nor pay) workers as humans. So any attempt at reasoning is futile. Only if they are force-regulated (UNIONS CANNOT DO THIS, only tightly-enforced state regulations and agents) will they give the common courtesy of 4-5 day workweeks and 30-35 hours max. If left to their own devices, they automatically go up 6-7 days a week and 10-12+ hours a day. They are soul-crushing meat grinders by design.

I just hope everybody understands that the Rockstar team who made IV and V so amazing is NOT the Rockstar team we have today. Those days are gone and they're never coming back.
This surprised me that it was even news considering the security risks involved in a project worth as much money as this. I can understand people that applied for a remote position and then being told to come into the office when they may live far away and signed a contract for an exclusively remote position though, but I think these positions should not have been overly important positions in this case if they were to be offered remotely. Something of this magnitude should have been exclusively office based worked the entire project if the position dealt whatsoever with game assets/testing or anything that would be damaging if leaked. As far as those that didn’t like the culture; I’ve worked for several companies with horrible culture just like described here. I didn’t like it, so I quit and moved on. Considering how successful the previous GTAs and RDRs have been, clearly the way they worked worked for some people, and produced quality games, and that one thing we’ve always loved about GTA is them not pulling punches, so the best thing for the project and the fans would be to just stay the way they were, and anybody who doesn’t like it leaves, it sounds like some employees do accept the reality of working at Rockstar, and they would find hundreds of developers that feel the same way to replace those that don’t like it, who could move on to companies that align with their personal values and how they prefer to spend their lives.
I think more people need to start treating GTA6 as this studio's first debut. Rockstar Games has essentially been "Ship of Theseus'd" at this point, and therefore their reputation should be reset to a neutral level. I know this isn't going to happen, it's THE Grand Theft Auto 6 after all, but I hope more people wait for reviews before buying when it comes out. Also, something that'll really hurt GTA6 is if their mission design philosophy hasn't evolved since RDR2 (See: "Rockstar's Game Design is Outdated" by NakeyJakey). Rockstar's typical mission design really started to show its age with RDR2, as much as I liked the game as a whole. However it is clearly outdated, and this will be one of the things I will use to gauge whether I should buy it or not, among other things. This is more of a personal thing, but Rockstar has really frustrated me over the years as well. There's all the cancelled games and DLCs (RDR1 DLC for RDR2, such an obvious thing to do but something they refuse to), yeah, but there's also their apparent *disdain* for PC. They clearly do not respect PC as a platform, evident from delaying releases on the platform, the neglect GTA Online on PC receives, security issues, and their dislike of the modding scene. It just kind of makes me want to not consider them at all, as it feels like they just outright don't want me as a customer just because I play on PC.

I'm sorry but the best games they made came out during the era where they used to brawl and go to strip clubs. This woke management may be the death of Rockstar.
Rockstar employees fighting to be treated better is not causing "the death of Rockstar". The quote from the video everyone seems to be mixing up as being literal - that "people aren't allowed to enjoy these things" - wasn't. It was meant to illustrate how reliant Rockstar employees were being crunched half-to-death were on unhealthy coping mechanisms, with more emphasis on the developing alcoholism and brawling. While people were surely having parties and sharing mutual tough love, it more means people becoming substance-addicted, becoming mentally and emotionally fractured, and getting into fights they otherwise would not have. ...Going to strip clubs is fine if you really want to get your rocks off that badly. Relatedly, based on what other studios mean (and indeed, explain that they mean) when they say their work environment either was or is like a frat house, like Bungie for instance, isn't that it's a fun, casual place, but rather, an incredibly caustic atmosphere full of passive-aggression, posturing, and even bullying, often manifesting as sexism, racism, and other forms of prejudice. All the bosses are buddybros with eachother, at the blithe (or sometimes outright malicious!) expense of everyone below them. While treating employees better as individuals, on top of not crunching them in half as workers, is obviously the morally right thing to do, it's also the best thing to do from a pragmatic viewpoint as well. In a post-pandemic 2020's the speculative bubble around video games as an industry has burst, or at least, largely deflated; they no longer get an incredible, even disproportionate, amount of funding at the AAA level from investors and stacked CEO's who are willing to eat the financial loss of doing so, even if the game sells extremely well, because they believe video games will be a much larger, more valuable "thing" in the future. We're at that point now, or at least close enough to spook these people; video games are no longer growing at an exponential rate that shows a huge future. They're "just" a mainstay of culture now. The game plan of the 2010's and late 2000's of racing to make games that are bigger and bolder and push the format and hardware further and further is no longer feasible, because even the AAA market is at its pleteau. This topic even comes up briefly in this video, where it's mentioned GTA VI was downsized from taking place across a recreation of most of *two continents* to the size of just one main city with surrounding towns, like the already-relatively-gargantuan GTA V, because making something that big without either taking so long to come out that people forget about it and don't buy it on release, or require an incredible number of people working under literal sweatshop conditions that these corporations can't get away with creating. Games can't just keep getting bigger anymore, because they've gotten as big as they can realistically become. Therefore, at this point, grinding employees into the dust to produce bigger and bigger mega-games isn't only unethical, it's outright wasteful; as shown with games that try to go above and beyond this line anyways, it will result in a rushed, lopsided, often bloated, just *bad* experience all around. Heck, lots of games pushing the envelope even *before* we got to this point had this problem; Skyrim comes to mind instantly, since even if you argue that the game downsized its historical RPG half to instead grow and develop its open-world exploration half for wider appeal, it's still ultimately a game that's outright incomplete and unpolished in so many other areas otherwise in ways that become increasingly hard to overlook with time. I can say with confidence after seeing and studying so much about the video games industry that if companies keep feeding their employees to the meat grinder so they can make a bigger and bigger burger patty, that patty will just end up like Skyrim, launch Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, and more.
Also, I will say this, purely and entirely for your sake: I mean this with no sarcasm or malice or passive-aggression, not to get one over on you or nag you or anything like that - I promise - please do not say "woke" like this in a serious and demeaning context. At this point in culture, "woke" is no longer a dangerous-sounding buzzword one can aim at progressive arguments. If you use "woke" in this way while trying to argue a point, even in relative passing like this, it paints an enormous target on your face and will get you viciously laughed out by the people and their points you're trying to refute. Even as a random fellow UA-cam commentor that is a stranger to me and will probably not read the paragraphs in my previous comment, I wouldn't want that for someone because that also stifles conversation.
Honestly... knowing some of the people who work at gaming companies now... I feel like this is just a misunderstanding by the developers of how tough game development really is. This isn't like making a part-time indie game. Hearing some of these comments, they seem like the kinda people who just don't know what it's like to work hard for a hard job.
Is game development as tough as being a paramedic or oil rig worker… no not really. But that being said it’s still a very complex industry and the nature of the work itself it difficult and extremely time consuming.
no way you just said that. some of these people literally work 12 hours 6 days a week as mentioned. that is not healthy whatsoever and its not like they are doing time critical work like doctors or firefighters. this is purely due to bad project management and greed
@@FdPros Gta 6 is the most anticipated game at this point in time. They are literally working on a piece of history. This isn't work where you can expect to have an 8 hours, 5 days a week type of job. This is equivalent to working in the gold mines. You're doing the most difficult job. If you can't handle the heat, get out of the forge. No, it's not like being a paramedic or firefighter. But it's also not like working at a supermarket.
yea i kinda agree with this one, its like youre working on the top tier gaming company making the most anticipated game in history, and there is always a risk in every job. I dont agree with some crunch culture or even underpaid. But i do know that if you want to make something great there will be always greater risk that will come to you. Its more like that making this game will be a history on your portofolio work. Lets just hope rockstar still deliver great content in gta 6 and still had that parody joke on the game👍
Not really. You can spend 5 hours peacefully traversing GTA IV or V for instance, also RDR and RDR2, and can even not get hurt. It's only when you INTERACT with the world in a certain way that it gives it right back to you...
Absolutely. I just read the /r/transgender thread on Rockstar removing transphobic jokes. And of course, as expected, they fully support the decision. The boys club is no longer, we got a lobotomized Rockstar now.
As someone who's still working from home, while discussing the situation with my team, we realized not only our productivity has been constant but also has improved as well, and at least for our company (which is small compared to R*) we have not experienced any security issues, so productivity sure is BS, but sadly with has previously happened R* can really claim it is for security which is why I disprove all leaks since it is now shown how this only has impacted those whose living depends on the current WFH working environments and not the corporation and its shareholders, just for some 15 seconds of fame and self congratulation, I complete condone the actions of those who now are giving these corporations the excuse to justify the return to old habits.
Your company is small you said. Why would you experience any security issues? No hacker would care about the company you work for, while GTA VI is one of the most anticipated videogames of the decade. Most hackers target workers instead of the actual company itself as it's easier to hack them. I still think that returning to the office is a bad idea tho.
@@awii.neocities thats not how hackers operate, sure R* is a more lucrative target, but so is their security harder to circumvent (I would assume). For a small basement hacker it can still be lucrative enough to hack small businesses for randsom and what not. Heck why do you think individuals get attacked by hackers?
@@SirDerRosen Because it's easier to reach the company itself. It's easier to fool a random intern than one of the main cybersecurity workers there. Plus, every company has access to good security. It's the whole reason why most cyberattacks now are either from social engineering or the company running an out of date system. Being an idiot or forgetting to update isn't less likely in a larger company.
And we the gamers will suffer. Red Dead Online being forgotten about, which is sad because its an amazing and beautiful game compared to the dumpster fire that is GTA Online which has gotten SOOOO Boring. Rockstar prioritizes money over their employees forgetting that without those employees and talent their company would crumble. I hope they unionize and make Rockstar come to heel.

i am a fan working from home, but let’s be honest, the reason to working from home is not only to be “closer to family” but it’s just to avoid contact with people, is that good?
I use to work as a roadside mechanic even during snow storms for more than 16 hours a day. I had a cellphone on me where I had to answer at all times of the day. One day I got tired of it and I quit. If they don’t like it then quit. You can’t make your employer do anything but you can do something about it.
I hate to be glazing rockstar but yea sending people back into offices to help prevent leaks/security vulnerabilities is a good thing. Just because its "gonna happen" doesnt mean you shouldnt try and stop it.
I think that it is necessary for those that live within the area to go to work physically and not from home as for those who live far away they should keep working from home
Rockstar games should give employees option for remote work at home or in office work and Rockstar games shouldn't rush gta 6 because we be other cyberpunk 2077 Disaster

Rockstar games has been going downhill since they toned down the jokes! Also unnecessarily removed transgender jokes like why was that even important? i know its a minor part of the game, many players dont even encounter them, but if a game studio's priority is to go out of their way to make the game more "family friendly" and "safe" when it clearly wasnt that from the beginning and neither was it important tells a lot about them and who, or what they have become. So i'm really not surprised by this.
I just hope rockstar will not go full inclusive and don't make racist jokes and make fun of gays anymore in their games. This is why I loved the GTA series because it had the courage to remain traditionalist despite all the other games trying to be inclusive. Making a more laid down GTA would be a flop and is going to negatively affect the future of the company.
IMO it'll be better if they go back to the original trilogy ways. Open objectives, more word humour and less unhinged stuff like that one Beverly mission in V or Trevor as a whole

I fear that with the studio trying to be “more friendly” or whatever gta 6 will end up being politically correct and losing the charm it had.
People don’t love South Park or Tropic Thunder because they’re family friendly and PC. They love them because they make offensive jokes and play off it in a satire way. Just like gta 5 did.
Luke is afraid that if Rockstar treats their employees like humans his precious game will become politically correct.
Luke wants a mean studio “grrr” that disrespects its employees and enforces unfair working conditions. This will magically make his game more satirical

Edit:
Not to mention that trailer leak costed them millions. so I can deff see security being a big factor here.
Trailer leak cost them millions how exactly? Not trying to be rude, genuinely asking.

So the game will release in 2030 then & fans & shareholder will force them to release it faster LOL

I love how Rockstar employees complain about returning to the office after GTA VI suffered the biggest leaks in gaming history and became the game with the longest development time in the company's history
True but GTA 4 had a weird Development Timeline as Most Devs Got Separated into Batches of works to complete Ballad of the Gay Tony And Lost Of The Damned.
Rockstar Also wanted to make a san andreas story but it was scrapped due to most of the voice actors from San Andreas weren’t coming back as most quit during the San Andreas time line…
Rockstar also had Midnight Club Los Angeles In Development aswell which pushed Rockstar San Diego , Tokyo and London to work on midnight club leaving everybody else to work on GTA 4 and then Red Dead Within that same time frame.
To put it light Rockstar wasn’t just developing GTA 4, they were jumping back and forward within 3-4 projects on top of Undead Nightmare.
Then Max Payne 3 & GTA 5 were pushed into development.
@@rayojordan2838 Yes! But you must realize that back then, the frequency of game releases was MUCH higher than it is nowadays. The only truly next-gen game we got from Rockstar was RDR 2 (which is worth 10 good games on its own), but you have to notice that the entire Rockstar seems to be focused on a single project (GTA VI), and even then, many key people are leaving the studio stating that "There's no progress being made in development."
The situation worsens even more when we remember the company's actions in recent years: Creation of GTA+, endless re-releases of GTA V, the disaster of GTA The Trilogy Definitive Edition...

The rockstar employees deserve the best working environment and conditions. They really put so much into their games.

I'm sorry but the best games they made came out during the era where they used to brawl and go to strip clubs. This woke management may be the death of Rockstar.
we’ll see.
Sweet baby inc, hello?

Making a more laid down GTA would be a flop and is going to negatively affect the future of the company.
IMO it'll be better if they go back to the original trilogy ways. Open objectives, more word humour and less unhinged stuff like that one Beverly mission in V or Trevor as a whole
I dont know what youve been on lately, but youre on the right stuff. Much love, bruv, keep it going 🙌🏾
Bro this is top tier quality content, keep going my dude
I also would be worried, if my boss started to thinking about 12h workday
and anything what R* will achieve by crunch is even bigger delay
The boys club is why we get such astounding games though. crazy how the harder we work the better the outcome. hmmm
