I definitely agree that freight railroads will never be perfect. There are many things that could be done differently but at the end of the day the company needs to make money. I've seen the argument of electrification and how the railroads are greedy and don't want to invest, but what they don't realize is the sheer cost of doing such. As a business you are going to keep costs down so you can stay afloat. If you already have a system that works, why would you change it for one that will costs billions to invest in with almost no economic benefits? Times have been changing over the last few years and its going to be tough for some of these companies to adapt and change, but when they do, I think it'll be worth it.

I believe, while yes we do have things we hate about the railroads, They're in the best stage they ever been in, Safety wise, Efficiency wise, and even Freight/Passenger wise. I believe that they are improving and WILL get better.

If the railroad system we're still based upon all the Fallen flags being there some of the newer technology may not have happened and Freight would probably not be moving as fast as it is moving today even though there is room for improvements. A quick look at a freight guide from say 1980 will also show a huge number of Truck Lines or airlines that are no longer around either. While not all from deregulation some just were weak add others didn't keep up with the times. Growing up in the midwest in the 1970s the 40 ft box car still reigned Supreme even though it was mostly obsolete but lines like CNW. MILW. ROCK. SOO still were rebuilding them because they had to keep serving money losing branches and couldn't afford to buy too many new 100 ton covered hoppers. Safety through proper maintenance and recognition of the regular line employees combined with consistently reliable service would go a long way in making the systems look better in both the shippers and public eyes
