A Visit to Doc’s Caboose and a New Digitrax System
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭40‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
After facing some struggles with the DCC system on my layout, things are finally looking up with a new controller and accompanying rolling stock, plus another trip to Kansas City for some good train action.
Besides the Bottoms and Murray Yard I also saw some trains on the BNSF Southern Transcon at Union Station but couldn’t get much video.

Perhaps my opinion is a bit out there, but I think we should nationalize in order to electrify. As we all know, battery and hydrogen engines will never have a long term affect and electrification has been proven to work quite well. I think the only way for us to electrify all of our major routes would be to nationalize since most class ones likely won’t want to all work towards that.

    • @imatrainperson1195

@@owenthetrainman7219 I think electrification could be interesting. Nationalized or not it could take a long time but I could see it working gradually, like expanding the northeast corridor down south. As I mentioned, nationalization can and has worked previously, so there’s some positives. But one of my main concerns with it is making the government the judge of how much funding the railroad gets.

The bigger question I have would have to do with the numbers chosen for preservation. Why didn’t they save 4000 or 4025? Would’ve been ideal to choose those over most earlier to mid numbers considering one was their first example and the other being their last. Still mad respect towards the strong effort in keeping those 8 around and more importantly restoring one over the challenger. I do hope the big 3 as UP likes to call it come back and make a very nice return. They could potentially pull some loads or be all hooked together. A union reformation would be dope considering their name includes “Union.”

If that interests y'all, anyway. With regards to Coal dust the one that blew the most dust was from the Powder River and the theory was you lost one car for every 100 in the consist to a power plant in the Midwest. Within the last year if you go to jawtooth videos type in something like NS train dust blowing off coal train. It was somewhere in West Virginia but he was actually coughing from the experience. Originally the mine would just spray water over the top but that would dry out quickly so now it's a waxy substance to try to hold it in place. The derailments they refer to we're probably about 10 years ago in the Powder River basin where the coal dust that blew out of the cars accumulated to such a point then after rain storms water was no longer draining properly and became Gumbo. I do remember some news items in Trains magazine and how it resulted in a massive rebuilding. Back in the mid-1970s the Milwaukee Road and a unit train of lignite from a mine to a power plant in North Dakota and it was so powdery every car had to have a lid. If someone wants to sound the Panic alarm watch a loaded Frac sand train take off after it's left the mine and you'll see all the silicates swirling around. They should be glad the railroads are no longer using asbestos based brake shoes

4:20 I agree with both points of view, since they are doing something, just not the obvious thing of finally electrifying their track network. An electric train running of the grid power is the best transportation mode we have. Why do they use inefficient hydrogen or environmentally harmful und extremely flammable batteries if they can just use grid power? edit: 7:52 have you heard of black lung? it was a common disease among coal miners during the industrialization and if someone were to live very close to a rail line with coal that leaves behind a huge plume of coal dust going by regularly, I could see problems if it got too much into the lungs. But If that were to be the case, I would assume someone sued one of the rail companies ages ago...

A few additional points I didn’t mention at first: 1. While the majority of the articles I reacted to were from the past year or so, the last one regarding coal trains was from 2015-16, so some of the info might be dated, thus making some of my criticism invalid. 2. Adding on to the former article, I mentioned how railfans like myself haven’t had much of an issue with coal dust from trains. That’s partly because some railroads (BNSF and CP, possibly others) have installed overheard sprayers which are used to keep the coal from their trains mostly contained and not fly out. Idk how often these are used, but it is another example of how railroads are aware of what’s going on and are doing at least something about it.
