What It Was Like To Live During The Shōgun Era In Japan

- One of the most acclaimed streaming series of recent memory, FX’s “Shōgun” was based on a 1975 novel by author James Clavell. That same book previously inspired a memorable 1980 TV miniseries that was also well-received - if your dad watched the History Channel in the 90s, you probably saw the gigantic VHS box set somewhere on his shelf.
But what you might not have realized is that both the book and subsequent two miniseries were rooted in real Japanese history, and provide a solid, though fictionalized, chronicle of the formation of the actual Tokugawa Shogunate. So…

Narrator is a gem
Thanks for bringing back the Voice , is great to hear him !!😊👍🏼😌
I know a lot of people don’t want a season 2 but I’d love one
I think people fear that without much source material (most of the book being covered by the first series), season 2 will make the story "modernised" or otherwise changed/corrupted.
It's a standalone story finished in one book.
@@zykloniumgoyoxide3199 yeah I know but they still have some history they can use as inspiration
A television series is truly a success if the story is finished yet the audience keeps wanting more...
Pretty common for american production to keep churning out stuff as long as it makes money until youre left with a lot of garbage causing the show to die out that way and leave a bad stink, its better this way
No offense to the other narrators but it's just not weird history if this guy isn't narrating it.
Yea he narrated way too many so to just switch it up was weird
@@PupcakesDogCare he's also just clearly better at it. Cadence, tone, understandability
The lady who narrates in Weird Good is pretty good. There is a new guy here with a low-pitched voice who is pretty decent. The guy with the high-pitched voice - not good.
So so true, let’s hope they make Tom Blank the sole narrator for WH and WHF.
For real. He IS weird history other guy tries to hard to be him and is to forced. If the other guy is narrating just dislike and move on sadly he does a lot of interesting topic videos but can’t watch it with that voice have to find another channel
I'm this old. I watched the original Shogun mini series.
Me too. And we still remember.😁👍🏼🏯
Can you cover Japanese art? Honestly the images from this video are so beautiful. The patterns that look printed are stunning. The bold saturated blacks are my favorite part.
The 1980s shogun is on paramount+ is outstanding! The remake is also good.
I feel the same - apart form the the main music score which hasn't aged too well.
At 14 after seeing the first miniseries I read the book and learned for the first time what Ben Wa meant. Thank you for that, James Clavell.
What's Ben Wa
TIMELINE!!!! please! Anyone with me?
With you!
Yes!!
and my axe!
Without a doubt!
They already did most of the years
Thanks for this! 🗾 I enjoyed both mini-series... and I'm astonished and pleased that the newest incarnation is set to continue, even without more source material from Calvell. I guess we'll see!
Yay the best narrator is back!
I enjoyed both movies Shogun. Both series held true to form about the political atmosphere of Japan at that time. I would like to see a season #3 of Shogun.
Great show
The problem with the series (more so than even the novel) is the changes they make (significant ones at times) would have big repercussions actual history if left to play out.
Thank you !
Both miniseries were excellent, and this video recounting of the years after is great. I am especially pleased to hear the original narrator, but the other narrators were certainly a lot better than the annoying machine narration that seems to be the trend across UA-cam. Just two little pronunciation points: 1) the second syllable in shogun is not pronounced like "gun"; it is more of a "gn" sound with only a slightly pronounced vowel (what we call schwa in the TESL business); 2) when pronouncing Cape Verde, the final E is not silent; it is pronounced more like Ver-day. Nevertheless, I loved the video! Big thumbs up!
Oh god thank you for coming back. I was so sad. 😢😂❤❤
thats why you dont give all the work to one guy, now This Narrator is the VOICE of this channel where people will go crazy when He suddenly gone even though He is not the original narrator of this channel...
Now, can we please get one about The Romance of The Three Kingdoms. Please
Me living in japan. 🇯🇵 where it happen gifu sekigahara japan 🇯🇵
i had the VHS box set
"he wasn't afraid of the shogun, but the shogun was afraid of him.....then one night, the shogun sent his ninja spies to kill my father....that was the night everything changed".....❤
I just realized Samurai Champloo's story takes place around this time considering the episode with the Dutchman
I've read the novel at least a dozen times.
Same. I have the audio book as well.
A part of me wishes that the Hulu series wasn't as popular as it is. Because I hear we're getting a season 2, and I don't know how I feel about that. But I kind of don't want one. This was a nice companion piece to the show, which I just finished a couple of days ago.
Please tell Mr. Blank his pronunciation of the Japanese names and words are crisp and spot on. But we know that Tom is always up for the job!
I find it hilarious our media has deteriorated to the point we need a special disclaimer for a network called "The History Channel" running series that were actually based on history.
Yeah....has nothing to do with media and everything to do with people that consume media. Specifically parents that would like to know what content will be in a program so they can determine if they want their kids watching it.
But you keep on going with that outrage. Why should people have a quick, easy way to determine if something is appropriate for their kids?
@@taoofjester4113 What? Lol
What are you even on about? I'm talking about the fact that it was a "worth mentioning" note for the narrator to specify that a show History Channel ran was based off of real events in history, because most of their shows at this point are just "reality-TV" dramas or half cooked aliens nonsense.
Nobody was talking about content warnings or child protection features. Go practice your reading comprehension and calm yourself.
Maybe try improving your writing ability. Not a single part of what you wrote said what you just said and, instead, is exactly what people comment when a program has a disclaimer about violence (or whatever) on UA-cam videos, or TV programs, about history.
Writing is hard. That is okay. You will get better with practice. Cheers mate.
@@taoofjester4113 i understood exactly what they were saying maybe it’s your comprehension skills.
I couldn't stand the book of Shogun but I love the time period. I'd much prefer the Samurai Warriors version if we're going with fiction. At least that treatment is fun.
Shogun in Japan was very different back then.
OG Narrator Guy 🙌
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a unique history!
OG IS BAACK
Confessions of a Hopeless Nerd:
I have read that book. Several times. Thank you for reminding me to read it again. There is a long weekend pending and I have some nice tea, Earl Grey, Hot. 🤓
Edit: 🇨🇦
I'd like to see a weird history about the chess Turk robot from the 1700
Please do a video on The Philadelphia Experiment
What surprised me was everything
Yes TOM !!!
WOO HOO! Our wonderful narrator! My ears thank you! ❤️🙏
I love the show Shogun .... its more historically authentic rather than historically accurate
You may want to refresh your definitions.
@@stick9078 He's right. The story is based on real people, but the story is Clavell's fictional account.
On the other hand, the costumes, mannerisms and other aspects of the drama are supposedly spot on.
@@brj_han Now you're being redundant.
I believe the movie The Last Samurai is loosely based on the life of Adams.
True stories of the Warring States era.
If anything I would love to learn about the history of Japan's traditional houses before they were switched with westerner ones.
I think it's interesting coming to light how BS karate is and the actual fighting styles used in war during the times of the shoguns are suppressed knowledge.
@Metatron is doing some killer reviews on the most recent Shogun....
Ferda fresh
There is only one movie/tv series with that name.
HENRY BOX BROWN💚💚💚
Next time, let’s do something about my dad😂
Tell us what happened IN THE JAPANS!
3:30 Reminds me of the movie Joe vs. The Volcano!
Awesome movie!
Let’s get with the program and move on Nothing stays the same.
Lol, was that a subtle Blue Eye Samurai reference at the end?
The 1980 version is much better!
Was their only certain people that were allowed to smoke opium
Seems like the real issue with the narrators is just the lack of transparency.
Is the veteran retiring from the channel? Are the new guys filling in when he's sick? What's the deal?
For example, the fem narrator is all but exclusively WHF at this point, but she still doesn't head it alone at all. When will a vid have her or him, and which him anyway?
Though it's certainly just a minor annoyance to open the vid and not hear your favorite voice, the problem is more about the gamble of who the VO without knowledge as to why and no choice or say in the matter. It destroys trust and damages the viewer base. After all, just read the comments.
Without any formal announcement or acknowledgement, it's not going to change the climate of these videos any time soon. The best thing we can do is to just deal with it, but WH is inherently less enjoyable because of it.
It's not just the voice, it's also the lie.
It's both.
5:32 There are few experiences that are so tied to deception as a standard job interview!
Reminds me of the Patton Oswalt comedy sketch My Weakness is My Strength!
The original inspiration for Shogun, AND the hit song "Turning Japanese'.
I assume.
Lol! Turning Japanese is about fopping!
The Japanese are next level
3:06 That moonlit water reminds me of the awesome music video "Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen!
0:01 Reminds me of the UFC fighter Mauricio "Shogun" Rua!
He is one of my favorite UFC fighters.
Yasuke was Not a samurai
Gotta be honest when I saw the "W H" in the YT thumbnail I wondered what the hell does Waffle House have to do with Feudal Japan? lol
Both miniseries contributed to increase Japanese language vocabulary internationally 😁
0:51 The movie Ronin is one of my favorite of all time!
I probably have seen one of the car chase scenes 100 times!
Dude you're talking about had red hair fake history not weird history
*Clicks*
*Hears original narrator's voice*
I'll stay
The World's Fair is going to be in Osaka, Japan next year, maybe Top Ramen will make the Shōgun their mascot by then!
Or will it be the Samarai?
Could you do an episode ethe sword types and the master sword makers
Finally the narrator is back.

My vehicle is a 2004 Toyota Tundra, it rocks!

ShougAn?! Seriously, you didn’t even look up the pronunciation?
7:32 I was baptized in the UCC Church (First Congregation Church), which is the oldest church in my hometown of Burwell, Nebraska.
First! Nice
😂 sad life you have
Me first!
Pathetic
Hahaha! I know that pronunciation can be difficult, but..."shogun" really should sound like "show goon"...
