I’m pretty sure they’re not leaning into the racism aspect given the fact that we saw black people in higher power at some points. She wouldn’t be walking around in that fancy dress if they were going that route. Plus the family friend of the Holmes family that teaches martial arts.

@@nativenewyorker3144 to clarify, I think it’s great when stories decide that bigotry doesn’t have to exist in fiction the way that it does irl, but if you set a film in Victorian England & center the plot around its harmful ideals, it feels pointed not to mention ones that don’t apply to you (the folks behind the camera) especially when plot-relevant
@@pageblank3323 I think if it were realistic roles for non-white british actors would be more limited, and that's why they went with no distintion between ethnicities in these new fictional series (like the bridgerton one as well). Personally if I were a poc british actress I would be thrilled to be able to portray a rich powerful person in a period drama.
@@cantacarallada I understand why you feel that way, but actually the history ppl teach is very inaccurate/w regard to the prominence of POC. Of course POC were deeply oppressed in this era but there Were still some of us in positions of power. The way they cast in Bridgerton was definitely a stretch lol but the way they cast in Enola Holmes could’ve easily been a reality in Victorian England. Only a select few higher ups are POC and the vast majority of those are Desi men. That completely tracks, so they really could’ve delved into racism. I’m not opposed to “colorblind” casting (although I’m not the biggest fan of the term for it) but I do think some folks who employ it are using that as an excuse not to do the work in addressing real world oppressions and potential solutions/ways to mitigate on screen

I actually laughed a little at the where, when, how of the language of fans because I have yet to find any written information (that isn’t a webpage) or a really old/rare fan with that information. (This movie made me look it up) I have an etiquette book from the late 1800s and one from the early 1900s and they don’t have anything about fans except that they are great accessories.

The old books don't mention anything because it isn't the original purpose of the fan, the women gave the fan a new use during the period to communicate discreetly. It's really interesting haahah!
I did enjoy the second one more cuz Sherlock was in it more. And I love Millie lol but the turning to the audience really confused me.

The actress that plays Sarah is on a lovely little show called Find Me In Paris. It goes down hill in the 3rd season, but it would make a hilarious viewing with you both. Time traveling ballerinas. I won’t say more. 😂❤
These movies are definitely cute, but I'm pretty sure Enola was a much more effective detective in the books 😂. I read them a pretty long time ago, but iirc she dodged Sherlock for a long time and didn't need people to constantly help her solve cases and break out of prison. It was kind of frustrating to watch her be two steps behind in her own mystery both times and possibly even make things worse rather than better for the people involved

I think men did also use dance cards to keep track of who they were to dance with as well. When there are a lot of different dances, I would think a man would need to know who he's partnered with for each one as well. Imagine the faux pas of dancing with the wrong woman at the wrong song. LOL

I hate to be the one saying this, as I am okay with romance in stories, but I kind of enjoyed Enola's complete lack of interest in it in the books (maybe early to suggest she's aromantic, since she's fourteen in the books, but just having a female character who doesn't want romance can be kind of cool--I know this is a complaint people have about romances given to Sherlock, except for the "female" part).

I kind of slightly dislike how the female Holmes movie seems to be more childish in terms of its difficulty in detecting
I think it's cuz it's targetting a younger audience. It's a teen movie, after all. But I remember reading a series of books about a female Holmes that was decent, I think the girl WAS Sherlock (as in Sherlock was a made-up brother she had created to get business) and her name was Charlotte. Don't remember the name of the books but I think the author's last name was Thomas. You can look on Audible!
